My current job is pretty laidback about us having phones out and listening to music as we work sorting archaeological artifacts in a lab, so I've started binge-rewatching Durarara!! from the very beginning.

I've already finished the original run yesterday and just started x2 Shou, but some thoughts I had:

At least in the anime adaptation, the original run was meant to be pretty self-contained in the event they weren't able to continue (which to be fair was true for quite a while before x2 got greenlit), so rather than consider the original run a "phase one" of Izaya's grander scheme to start a gang war and awaken Celty's head it makes a bit more sense to think of it in the context of a failed first attempt.

In that context, it makes me wonder how he felt about it, his first grand failure. Grand enough that he felt the need to step back and lay low so he could go back to the drawing board (see: his initial conversation with Shizuo in ep 25).

I honestly bet he picked a fight with Shizuo just to take out his frustrations on it all. He managed to create a messy three-way conflict and get Celty roped into it as Anri and Mikado's friend, but the head gave narry a stir. Not to mention, Celty was able to help them resolve things pretty easily by just getting these dumb kids to actually talk to each other.

I don't remember the episode number because I just binged the whole thing, but Shingen at one point suggests that rather than rope Celty into a conflict, Izaya should try to center the conflict around Celty herself. Izaya claimed he was doing just that, but I don't think he really succeeded in the initial run. Sure, Celty was involved, but more as an independent third (fourth?) party than as a focal point. She was in the Dollars and friends with both Anri and Mikado, but she didn't really have much of a stake in the squabble itself. That was just a big messy of miscommunication between three high schoolers completely unrelated to her. That must have been frustrating, honestly, getting so close but falling just short of what he needed.

Then, on top of everything else, he wasn't even really involved in the resolution of the fight itself, either. He says in his theory that he needs to create a war only HE can win, right? I'd imagine that's why he was fucking around with a bunch of kids rather than the bigger leagues like the Yakuza that he works with regularly: it's a lot easier to insert yourself as an authority as the only adult. He'd be able to take control of that situation so easily, but Celty took that role instead, so he never even got a chance to win the war.

And to blow off steam from his initial failure, what does he do? He deliberately picks a fight with Shizuo, someone he generally tries to avoid when he can help it, by fucking with his brother's safety.

I wonder if he needed to feel alive for a minute by reminding himself of the loom of death. Shizuo's arguably the only one that actually threatens Izaya enough to feel any sense of awe or dread. I wonder if he wanted to put himself in that position to remind himself what was at stake and give him the motivation to go back to the drawing board and try again. He really does have a Shizuo Complex in that sense.

Anyway, I might do Shou, Ten, and Ketsu individually as I finish them, but if anyone would prefer a liveblog instead, lmk. I might stop at Shou for now, tho, because Wa-kun and I are I thiiiink like halfway through Ten? And I don't wanna spoil them with my rambling.

It's over 12 minutes long, but then it's a whole character analysis of why Shizuo Heiwajima and Izaya Orihara ended how they began: as mortal enemies.

It's not Shizaya-friendly, but then I guess that automatically makes it Shizuo-friendly. Because... you know... Shizaya is bad, bad, bad for my darling boy Shizuo Heiwajima. 🤣

Stray thoughts on Kururi & Mairu

So I am probably one of the very few Kururi & Mairu fans and I want to talk about them. They are, unfortunately, victims of being anime girls from the 2000s - there are a lot of problematic things in drrr that we, as a fandom, should acknowledge and discuss. Simon, Namie, the treatment of characters like Vorona and Anri, I could go on. But right now, I want to talk about the twins.

We don’t get a lot of information on the Orihara family as a whole. All we know is that Izaya was very isolated as a child, and seemed to resent his sisters for being carbon copies of each other. So the girls decided that they would be opposites. They picked their personality traits, splitting them evenly. That’s why they act opposite in the chat room - they do it all on purpose.

I can only speculate here, but it seems like the Orihara parents may not have been around a lot. Actually nobody seems to have parents in drrr. Why was Masaomi able to do all that while he was in middle school???? And the only parents we see are awful - like Shingen?????? He’s our parental figure in this show????Anyway. It’s a pretty common headcanon that Izaya’s parents were not very present, so we can only assume the same for the girls. Izaya, due to his own issues, resented them. All they had was each other. And that is not good!

If you think about it, their codependence is really sad. They’ve had to rely on each other for everything. Even though they purposefully act different from one another, they need the other one in order to feel whole. Izaya said they were basically the same person, and they changed that. But in the process, they cut themselves in half. They’re still operating as one.

When we meet the twins, they seem pretty comfortable around the people Izaya frequently interacts with - mainly Shizuo. He clearly knows them, and knows them well enough to evade them gently. He’s a lot kinder to the girls, even if they get on his nerves.

They quickly befriend the van gang, Mikado and Anri, Shinra and Celty, and Akane. They are present at the contentious Hot Pot Party. And Izaya knows that. He knows his sisters are hanging out with all the people on his chessboard.

Suddenly, they’re part of the chatroom. They’re directly interacting with Aoba (which, are they not kinda parallels to Anri and Masaomi to Aoba’s Mikado??). They have their dojo. Akane Awakusu looks up to them. And even though they get bullied, they have a community to fall back on. They’re not alone anymore.

It kinda seems like everyone who knows Izaya stepped in as big siblings to the twins. They continuously reject him, and he rejects them back. But they have something he doesn’t. Something he’s clearly jealous of.

They’ve never really been alone, they’ve always had each other.

And yeah, the canon portrays that in a super weird way. Sometimes they take the “twisted love” concept too far. But these characters are a lot more interesting than the jokes made at their expense. Sometimes I just pretend the canon isn’t true. I don’t like it! I wish they didn’t do it!!! That’s why I never used to talk about how much I like the twins - people will always fall back on the same joke like it’s 2009. Sometimes you just have to snatch them out of the canon. Take them out of their shitty narrative, they’re mine now >:3

Unfortunately, a lot of the female characters in drrr get ignored or misrepresented by the fandom. Even Celty! Hell, the anime goes out of its way to not make Celty the main character. We get stuck with Mikado for most of the show’s run.

I guess I just find it odd that the fandom doesn’t give the same grace and understanding to the girls as they do the guys. Izaya is everyone’s poor little meow meow (and I’m including myself in that statement) but what about the TWINS???

Idk I think their parallels to Izaya are really interesting, they have everything he doesn’t have. They’re still strange, and may not fit in with their peers, but they’re treated with respect by the very people Izaya focuses most of his time and energy on.

I also think it is so funny that Izaya had two little freak sisters the entire time and we find out about them in an OVA lmao

Like the funniest thing you can do to Izaya is give him annoying little sisters and then not mention them until it’s funny to do so

It’s like when Roger Rabbit can’t take his hand out of the handcuff until it’s funny, it is so funny to introduce these two after you’ve built Izaya up so much. Like he’s just a weird guy with weird sisters. He gets mad when they join his chatroom where he pretends to be a teenage girl. They’re a cringefail family and we simply must respect that.

I realize I never posted thoughts about Shizuo after finishing SH...

In summary: he is wonderful. Best Boy Award. He worries about Yahiro but wants to totally avoid him because he sees how they're similar and doesn't want the kid to end up like him. Shizuo's rage is better in check now that Izaya's disappeared and he wants to be a better person. He treasures his friends so much and I hope when the series resumes Vorona comes back.

He talked with Celty and wondered if he had gotten along with Izaya if "things would have turned out right" for him. (Celty replies "maybe but he still probably would have gotten you into trouble" basically)

The way this man just doesn't love himself or fully see his worth is just. Infuriating. Sir, sir, do you not understand you're wonderful? Clearly not!

He doesn't hate himself. I think in the beginning there was some self-hate. Like he felt trapped and defeated? He had resigned himself to being a type of outsider/monster and didn't think he could be a better him. His main motivation was to not cause trouble for his brother. But now after everything he's opened himself up to other people and feels worthy of having relationships.

He still believes that anything people say about him is what he deserves. (He'll mess you up if you talk shit about Celty since she's the nicest person he knows)

Will he ever realize he deserves the world? (Probably not)

I love all of your analysis on both Izaya and ASPD, it really makes me think. I really feel like Izaya would do good in the disabled community, after all, wouldn’t he have so much fun pissing off politicians and working for disabled rights?

And the fact that he treats everyone equally is going to be so much more appreciated among people who have never been treated equally.

I just want a post Ketsu story where he realizes that he has ASPD and actually works through the symptoms, enough that it isn’t controlling his life anymore. All the while making life better for himself and every other disabled person in Japan.

AND ON THE TOPIC OF ASPD- what if izaya does aspd related activism on the side? wouldnt it be cool to see him get into a formal debate with another professional who studies aspd but has a... less favorable view on it? wouldnt it be sick to see izaya corner them more and more, ask them what EXACTLY makes people like him different from everyone else? what exactly does the field of psychiatry seek to gain by villifying these people, who have what they have because of trauma, who could be helped if people tried- ACTUALLY tried, instead of the focus being on fixing them, like their disorder needs to be completely eradicated first and foremost before they're allowed to be treared as a person, before any of the other problems could hope to be addressed? what is there to gain from the system being as it is now?

i want to see izaya orihara have a formal debate in a college setting and make the other guy cry. i think izaya deserves this as a little treat

Izaya Orihara

Izaya Orihara is an infamous information broker and a twisted young man who manipulates others for his own enjoyment.  He possesses a remarkable skill for reading the behaviors and attitudes of others.  His understanding of human psychology coupled with a near superhuman acumen for statistical probability analysis enables him to predict the thoughts and actions of those around him with an uncanny accuracy. 

Although young Izaya understands others quite well, he does not feel especially connected to them.  Indeed he has lived an extremely isolated life and has turned to manipulating others as a means to quell his boredom and crushing loneliness. 

Izaya's nefarious actions have put him in opposition with the heroic Shizuo.  Strong, brave, selfless and utterly predictable, Shizuo represents everything that Izaya hates and the two have quickly come to be bitter rivals and one another’s arch nemesis.    

The machiavellian menace is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya in the original anime (with Johnny Yong Bosch voicing the character in the English language dub).  Izaya Orihara first appeared in the debut episode of Durarara!! airing on January 8th, 2010.

Zine

I had an incredible amount of fun with this.

Very recently, one of my biggest interests has been the 2009 novel/anime series Durarara!! This zine focuses on my three favourite characters who all have a connection to each other in some way, and I delve into a sort of character analysis focusing on each of their perceptions of one another, and how this tells us more about them as an individual as well.

I portray these variations of interpretation through alternates - a characterisation of an individual based around how a different individual perceives them. This includes a rather… exaggerated personality and design.

The zine introduces the characters; Orihara Izaya - a scheming informant, Heiwajima Shizuo - a bodyguard with superhuman strength, and Kishitani Shinra - a mysterious doctor. 

For the printing element, I contributed to this with the background - here, I inked and pressed craft items, most notably pipe cleaners, onto this piece of paper in vague mimicry of the city landscape the series is set in. 

Perhaps next time, I would like to explore lino printing and how negative space can be used, perhaps to portray the city at night rather than day to give a different feel.

PART 5 OF SHIZUO/VORONA - Season 2, Final arc, Durarara.

This is the continuation of my last post in this series.

Izaya, the culprit, has just dropped a whole freaking excavator/forklift on Shizuo and Vorona. The intention behind this act cannot be anything other than to seriously injure, if not kill, Shizuo and for sure kill Vorona.

Now I can see some Shizaya fans wanting Vorona out of the way, so her dying might be seen as a good thing by them. Not ideal for us Shizuo/Vorona fans but that's fandom for ya.

But I don't understand how anyone who claims to like Shizuo would want him badly injured or killed. Like... make it make sense! One half of this supposed pairing just tried to kill the other half dead. How does this even work? Makes me doubt if anyone that supports Shizaya as a pairing actually even truly likes (let alone respect) Shizuo as a character. They gotta be just Izaya fans who think of Shizuo as nothing more than a trophy for their favorite character. Even if Izaya hates Shizuo vehemently, Shizuo is a gift for him to torment and gaslight. Because I truly believe Izaya hates Shizuo and harbors zero positive thoughts towards him.

Anyways... on to the scene. Shizuo knew Izaya was the one to drop the excavator and rightly assumed Izaya was also behind the construction debris falling earlier - which injured Vorona, when she pushed him out of harm's way.

Of course, this is the moment in the LN when Vorona realizes that Shizuo is truly like a superhero. He glances the whole excavator off with just his right shoulder. Now, despite his super strength, he isn't left completely unharmed. He dislocates his shoulder in this. But he still manages to push the excavator out of the way and saves both himself and Vorona from getting killed.

Vorona is in shock at this spectacle. But a strange calm has descended on Shizuo. His anger has turned into a cold, calculated rage. He now knows he has to kill Izaya and be done with him.

He apologizes to Vorona. She just saved his life, but he's about to go ruin his life. He tells her she can stab him or shoot him the next time she sees him. But he gotta finish this job.

He walks into the stairwell and away from Vorona.

Vorona knows what he's about to do and she tries one last time to stop him. She calls out, "Shizuo! Come back!"

The look on her face is desperate. But he doesn't hear her.

After watching the series I fell in love with the lore and after searching for analysis and explanations I ended up saying, I need to write about it. And writing roleplay has been something I did almost all my life so... Here we are.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECTS OF YOUR CURRENT MUSE:

Vash reminds me how incapable I am of being a bad person despite trying. And if I hurt, I will always regret it. I pretty much align myself with his thoughts. And always blame me even if it wasn't entirely my fault? Well, it's a constant internal struggle. On the other hand, writing Knives helps me explore the other point of view, and in fact many of my OCs tend to have that point of view + a bit of madness... I enjoy writting grey characters, I cannot lie there.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING:

Music, music is my muse. Always has been and always will be. Finding the right music for a theme I want to write is enough. But I also ended up feeling inspired by reading ideas and analysis from other people about the series. I find them very interesting to understand well the characters.

FAVOURITE TYPES OF THREADS:

My favourites will always be the ones I create chaotically because my muse did something stupid. People laugh, have fun reading the dashboard and even make silly comments. Those things give me life. Now, about a more serious types of threads I like: threads where the characters need to face their problems to keep going. The evolution of the two characters is what I most enjoy writing and delving into. But yeah in summary, if you look for comedy or angst I'm your guy.

honestly izaya is such an iconic character. i always remember how his meddling and pot stirring made him such an agent of horrendous chaos, and yet... all of those who were played by his strings were able to resolve all sorts of deeply supressed issues and overcome them as a result of his bullshittery. it's like he made people closer.

even now, i cannot really say i understand what lies within izaya's heart nor provide an analysis of him as he boggles me so damn hard, but i do think hes one of those 'one in a million' characters whose worldview is so radical and strange that it made him a joy to watch...

my thing about izaya is that he's so strange and weird and i love that so much. i didn't want to ramble too much in the notes of that poor person's post but i find the way he speaks and the words he chooses so interesting so let me ramble a little bit. this may or may not even be coherent so bear with me here im just going to speak my thoughts.

ok this got really fucking long and all over the 0place so im putting this under a read more sorry.

so i have volume 9 of the novel in both english and japanese. i only have two novels in japanese and that is this one and yuuyake wo. so i'm pretty crazy about this izaya speech analysis shit. anyways i was rereading thru the jp ver the other day just to compare it to the eng and i kinda realized that like.

a lot of people you can separate their speech in either formal and informal speech right? someone like shizuo speaks really informally and uses a lot of rough, dragged-out versions of words and stuff (しゃーねえ vs しょうがない) and then someone like shinra who speaks in a ton of yojijukugo and generally sounds like a nerd emoji gijinka.

izaya on the other hand rly... doesn't fit in either? i mean sure he sounds like another nerd emoji gijinka but it's kinda different. it's not so much the words he speaks but rather the intonation and his tone...

and he has his moments where he speaks pretty seriously and whatnot of course, but in general he just... doesn't sound very human when he speaks? i don't know if that's a conscious effort or not. is it his attempts at distancing himself from his own individual humanity? or is it just because he's a weird guy? i dunno. but it's interesting nonetheless.

one thing i will note though is that despite his somewhat inhuman speech patterns, it's also pretty...dramatic? to the extent where it's really exaggerated but also very cute and charming. (this part is important.)

i think a lot of what makes izaya's speech so weirdly inhuman is because he doesn't really use a lot of slang or similar lingo that people his age would typically use. i know mikado said in the novels that he doesn't really try to fit in with his age group's fashion sense either so it makes sense but still. he's like an old hag it's so funny. and it's because of that that when he says stuff like 'i don't get all hot and heavy over headless women' or whatever he said to celty it's really amusing to me because like... why is the strange man saying this?💀

he sounds so old saying 'video game' like 😭 idk it's just funny cause he barely even knows anything abt games like bro knows nothing im crying

in the jp hes like 「…ゲーム中なのかい？」 and then when celty tries to explain herself he says 「何を言ってるのか、良く解らないんだけど」 and im rly bad at tling parts of sentences and stuff but just know that the way he words it makes it sound like this gif to me

i love both versions i think the original jp makes him sound like hes so lost and confused (hence why pw gif cause lord that man always looks lost LMFAOOOO) and then eng tl just blunt ass "I don't know what you're talking about." makes him sound like full on hag 😭😭😭

first i think it's funny the translation has izaya say fuck here cause he very rarely swears and i did read this one thing about how he only swears when his mask slips so to me this is like genuine bewilderment that he cant even hide LOL. second why is he so excited to hear about 'whatever sexual fetish' shinra has im crying he's so damn nosy . okay but this is not the funniest part let me add that now.

oh also another scene i think is really cute and amusing and funny is back when shinra was first still trying to get izaya to form the bio club w him.

1. shinra is funny as fuck in this scene but also izaya's "Hmm. Can I punch you?" made me havbe a good laugh. in the jp he says 「んー。殴ってもいいのかな？」 which is pretty much the same thing just with the intonation of like 'hmmmmmmmmm should i hit u or not...' sorry like i said im just bad w explaining this stuff. but i felt the need to point it out not cause im one of those annoying ppl who praise the original jp ver and reject translations and localizations i just think it's important for izaya specifically cause i love him and i want to analyze his speech patterns as best as i can.

i was going thru the novel just now for other stuff i wanted to mention and i forgot abt this part but it's so funny.

Type calmly, please.' its not even funny or nothing i just find it so amusinf whenever he talks like that💀 i will say though the english translation kind of makes him sound more weird and inhuman than the original. that line in the original was basically just him telling her she needs to calm down enough to at least type properly LOL. idk if im just being nitpicky cause this is izaya tho so feel free to ignore that. fwiw i like the eng tl bc while it's a different intonation than the original japanese ver i think if he did speak english it would probably sound smth like that anyways.

this too made me laugh like ??? seriously he is really nosy when it comes to people's intimate affairs. in the jp ver he calls them an 'intimate couple' which just is like .. ok bro💀

if i were commenting on the actual stuff going on in this scene rn this post would be a lot olonger and even more terribly all over the place so im just gonna focus on how i think it's funny izaya says 'easy, man...' this is like one of the only times his words are somewhat natural and sound like smth you would hear someone else say. in the jp ver it's 「おいおい…」 which is somewhat less out of left field in terms of coming from izaya but still it's pretty surprisingly normal. i have to wonder if in that moment he's too worried about shinra to care about keeping up appearances.

this is just random and me making fun of izaya as usual but why the hell does he weigh himself after his showers💀💀💀 it's cute and endearing and only adds to his strong gap moe but still... it's strange...

speaking of cute things this is from a volume i forget but he says this one phrase a couple of times and it is just both really cute and also kind of idk... saddening. one of the times i can remember he says it is when namie was making fun of him or something and he replies 'Don't tease me. I'm only human.' or something along those lines and it's like . hm. ok.

i think it's cute he says 'dont tease me' a few times cause eughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (trying to ward off severe brain damaged incoherent thoughts) but 'im only human' is like... are you really? even after you try so hard to escape your own humanity and individual self so much... im going to try and give my thoughts on it here but this is just based off my hc that izaya has bpd so yanno. im basing a lot oif this on my own experiences sorry. i do that a lot. (gestures over to all the posts i make abt fob/mychem fan izaya)

when it comes to just straight up acknowledging his humanity izaya has no problems with this because 'sure, i'm human. isn't that obvious?' is probably something along the lines of what he thinks. it's easy for him to just say that because it's just that. it's just words. it holds no real meaning and shows no true insight into how he actually perceives himself. but when it comes to actually having to come face to face with his own humanity and the fact that yes, he is only human, it's a lot more difficult because now it's out of his control. i wonder also if he has problems with perceiving his own self.

i say this a lot but i truly do believe izaya is so so so beautiful and i love him so much. also i just saw a funny post on twitter so i wanna say this here idk if yall know this but izayas actually a latina hes got chismosavirus❤ ok thats all i have to say sorry for rambling so much
