Fagonwi is the only other person working currently, besides me. She decided we didn’t need all those people, we could save on their wages. She’s terrible at managing this place. And what are the savings even for? It’s my dad’s money.

I wake up with Tristan going through some exercises. I use the refresher, take a shower.  Then I join Tristan in his exercise. I can't keep up.

memory (forgetful)

When writing this, I had to decide to trust my memory. I put details in here I felt were false because of that. However, I didn't add any details I know to be fabrications, leading to this having only sparse details. I already feel I'm lying for ninety percent of the book, I can't add any details or dialogue I have no memory of.

They all ask me about my family, if I have a photo. I don’t have one of my whole family, none even with Leofric. I put up a photo of my mom. I had to find a photo of her for the funeral, and it turns out the only thing I could find was five years old and from her work.

I always somewhat worried about the day I would switch bodies. My dad– I was eight when he switched. They didn’t meet up in time and it wasn’t until the next day that my dad got home. In a different body. Did that take some getting used to. Dad and his soul mate argued and parted ways. So that quickly broke the illusion that everything works out with your soulmate.

I then open up my document and type out a few words of the rebel story. I check back on the job posts. Find a job in a factory, probably repetitive labor,  send in the resume. My doorbell rings. I should get Jacen a key.

Who: Jacen Warren

Summary: Jacen reflects on the rescue efforts during the coronation and how that changed him.

Nights weren’t the same now. They were filled with the nightmares of my rescue efforts. Plagued with the person I didn’t realize I could become night after night caused me to reevaluate who I truly was. Was I truly the quiet as-kept man I claimed to be if I could also sink my teeth into someone’s jugular and rip their heads from their bodies in the process? Was I the nice guy who just existed in the shadows if I could tap into the anger coiling within me and allow it pop out like a jack in the box when they took my sister? Was I Jacen Warren the man my mother raised me to be if I gave more into vampire instinct than my werewolf side? If I filled up on the blood of my enemies and reveled in the kill to save my sister from capture? 

The answer was one I searched for daily now only coming to one conclusion. That man was always there but stifled. There was a part of me that kept my vampire side practically non existent, only identifying as a werewolf. Only participating in werewolf culture because I hated the man who was the deciding factor of me being a hybrid. That man kept me meek and quiet. My father was the reason I remained the silent party until spoken to. 

He was the reason I rarely expressed my emotions or care for anyone else even if I loved or cared for others. My father was the reason I second guessed every word from my mouth or even how I approached people. Even standing at six foot one, I felt as though I were the tiniest man alive in my father’s presence. For over a century, his verbal abuse had chopped me down at the ankles and reduced me from a tree to mere stumps of splintered wood. That was a feeling I associated with him and who he was. I also associated it to what he was. 

I hid that part of myself, eating food that I had no interest in pretending the taste was incredible when I had no taste for it. I spoke little of needing to feed or my preference for blood. Every day, I looked in the mirror as the shell of a man until I had to speak up for my sister in a pack I devoted most of my life to. She took over in a way that had not been very respectful to the current pack Alpha, but blood was blood. Again I made moves outside my character when I had to rescue her. Killing wasn’t necessary but something within me broke. Some part of me tired of lurking in the shadows broke free and reveled in the power of finally acknowledging that they must not have known who the fuck we were. Eastland and their Alpha wasn’t to be messed with and to take her meant the end. To take her meant assured death, and it meant finding the half of myself hidden in fear. It meant a new beginning for me. 

This meant I could now admit to myself that I, Jacen Warren, wasn’t just a werewolf but rather a hybrid werewolf and I could finally start living accordingly. Acceptance from others be damned.

A part but separate. For slightly over forty years, Roosa felt that was the story of their existence. Born in exile to a nymph noble and a guardian wolf, Eastland was where they’d been raised. Their paternal ancestors called the realm home while their mother’s tethered roots were from the Divine Forest. They were an air nymph among wolves without a pack nor people to claim as their own. Hale was unable to shift, like their father. But they also believed that they was able to feel beyond what Hale felt was tolerable for one soul to take, much like their mother.

They were of but couldn’t quite fit in. Hale was of Eastland but not a wolf. Likewise, they were a nymph hidden from having a home in the Divine Forest. Before their birth, and by their  very bloodline, Hale inherited the enemies of their mother. For most, if not all, of their life, Hale was told, by the future nymph Goddess no less, of the dangers that lurked in such a beautiful place. Of the realm that elected to subject Iris Hale to unspeakable tortures for the betterment of all nymphs. Except herself, of course.

But from the tales Iris fashioned and retold, it didn’t seem dangerous. In fact, the Divine Forest damned near seem to beckon Hale. Like a siren song heard by a ship adrift at sea. They yearned to visit. If only for a brief time. If only under an alias. After all, their true identity was unknown. Albeit if their name was a bit touch on the nose. But just so that it didn’t turn heads or grab attention of Iris Hale’s enemies. It was the safety of their father’s name, Roosa, or Rose in Dutch, that was relatively unusual but with no immediate connections to nobility that awarded Hale some freedom. No matter how elusive.

Even as a child, a young nymph from controlling the winds in Eastland or racing barefoot through the thicket of woods, Hale felt the pull of nature. The warmth of its embrace. It seemed to help Hale, at times, to escape the barrage of emotions that encircled him. Feelings that belonged to both themself and others. Hale was forbidden to visit the Divine Forest, for fear of retribution or worse, and had to learn what they could from Iris whenever she came to Eastland. Although, those times weren’t as frequent as either hoped. She was still in exile, had been since before Hale was born, and the truth remained for most of Hale’s adult life.

A family, an entire life, thrived unmarred by and blissfully ignorant of their very existence. Unaware of them. In a realm that was more of a threat to them than they were to it. Hale hated it. Everything about it. Such harsh truth seemed to mock Hale. Repeatedly, reminding the forbidden child of what they couldn’t have. Most of which were their by birthright. A life. A place to belong. A family. A home. Hale longed to burn it down. Set embers to the system that denied them such a life and start anew, restored by the ashes of its past, in a firm foundation of a better future. For all inside of it. Not one where the suffering of a sole being upheld the comfort of many.

...The Uprising maintained such views. The rebellious movement based out of the Dark World had bases scattered throughout Lume Noua. Inside of The Uprising there were no boarders, no species, just creatures with the common goal of dismantling the realms as they were and reconstructing something better in the void. No matter the realm Hale stepped foot upon, with The Uprising, came the resemblance of what they always wanted. A place and a people to call his own.

Half a decade ago, his mother made good on that vengeful ire of hers that burned since she was given away to Northland Falls as a gift from the Divine Forest, and she took the realm’s throne. It was secretive, violent and deceptive - the type of sorts Hale aided in the assist of. As back then, Iris Hale only had one son, publicly. Which gave Hale the freedom to operate under anonymity for both his mother’s sake and The Uprising. But Iris’ ascension meant Hale’s official declaration as Princex, the true acknowledgement that they’d craved since they were a child.

But despite being the first nymph of his mother, Hale wasn’t her only child. No, Hale was second born. An after thought. The spare to their hybrid sibling’s heir. It was a role that Hale Roosa was more than familiar playing in life - being in the background to another’s foreground. The wisp of wind one felt against the skin of their cheek but forgot at the sight of the dense forest before them. Hale understood how to be forgettable. They’d done so all of their life, thus far. Which was why their talents were used where they were best needed, the Divine Agency. Otherwise known as the Divine Forest’s spies.

Hale ignored the gossip that they’d received his quick promotion as the Junior Director of the Divine Agency due to their ranking as Princex. Any idiot that dared to share as much with them, learned quickly that Hale Roosa, royalty or no, was not one to trifle with. Nor that they hadn’t earned their position within the Agency. Hale had. As for everything else that Hale desired, they knew to bide his time, for they would receive every bit when his hour came. Hale would make certain of it.

Fanfic writer tag game

Tagged a couple days ago by @kanerallels and I’m finally remembering to do it :p

First fic: There are some Digimon fics that I wrote with my sister that never saw the light of day. In terms of things that were ever posted, that would be Not the World’s Greatest Babysitters, a story about Wedge, Tycho, Wes, Hobbie and Corran having to babysit the Solo kids. It was very silly.

Softest fic: I mean, I write in Fluff Minor so most of what I write is pretty fluffy. I think I’ll give this to either That Can Be Enough (Kanera wedding fic) or Very Important Question Time (Bail and bitty Leia discussing how she wound up as his)

Fic I'm most proud of: I am proud of myself for finishing He Likes Cats (Sandman!Death takes Discworld!Death to meet her family, we all have our rarepairs) because I started that story something absurd like five years ago and kept setting it aside.

I’m also pretty proud of Something in the Air because I took Rogue Podron shouting “Fanfic prompt! YUBSIE! Five times Kanan’s pheromones were  a problem and one time they weren’t” in the middle of an episode and came up with something that wasn’t ridiculous (though I declined to write from the POV of the pheromone as originally suggested)

I also discovered that pheromone is apparently like parameter in that I cannot for the life of me SPELL IT.

Fic that shows my progress: I mean I’d like to think literally anything I’ve written since that first one :p Though I guess if I have to be specific, it’s interesting to compare He Likes Cats to She Likes Umbrellas, which is the first installment of the series. I still love it and think it’s really cute, but He Likes Cats has much more narration and description while She LIkes Umbrellas is fairly bare bones dialogue. I think the sequel has better depth of emotion (possibly because it’s longer :p). A lot of my  more recent work has that going for it.

Favorite WIP: Okay, I adore all my children, let’s be clear. But there’s a special place in my heart for the Shatterpoint Order AU which is a “Kanan lives and actually gets to apply his interesting insights on what did and didn’t work with the Jedi Order he was raised in” AU. It gets to be special because it has been ages since I’ve written anything long form in terms of fanfiction (it will be a while before it’s posted because I want to have the entire first installment finished so I can go back and add things when I realize I need them).

While the main focus is what a Jedi Order with Kanan’s influence would look like/trying to still preserve the main plot beats of the OT with him alive, it’s generally just super self indulgent and contains the following:

Kanan being an adorable expectant dad (it will also presumably include Kanan being an adorable dad but Jacen will be born at the end of the first story)

Hera getting advice about human/Twi’lek children from Suu

Halden Warren and his daughter Rose... who are totally just Wash from Firefly AUed into Star Wars along with the version of his daughter who was born in a DWRP game I was in. She’s Force sensitive because Wash dealing with Rose’s superpowers was hilarious.

☆ Biography ☆ Mahina was born under a third quarter moon on a clear night. The third quarter of the moon is meant for releasing and cleansing but ever since she came into the world she was more like the sun. Her mother probably regretted naming her after the moon but either way she lit up everything around her when she felt it necessary. 

Little did Mahina know the world would try to snuff that sunlight in her out.

A free spirit from the time she could walk, Ma has found it in her best interest to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become the healer for the wolves. Learning the remedies since she was young was the only thing that kept her interested besides stories and folklore about the land she called home and roamed with her family. Her tight curls could be seen bouncing as she ran through the woods or pulled back and slowly falling back around her while pretending to make remedies just like her mother.

At the age of 11 Mahina found her parents dead in a wooded area near their home. The loss made her even more determined to save as many lives as she could, even if they were of another species. Ma’s fear of death or losing people truly made a indent on her spirit but she still tries to find the light in every situation.

Now as an adult, or a resemblance of one, Mahina has taken on the task of not only healing those of her pack with antidotes, sometimes making people laugh is enough to brighten a bad day, or night. She’s the first one to cut a joke and it plays a part in her bedside manner. Even through the pain she has gotten more than a couple of her brethren to laugh at her jokes. 

When she’s not tending to her duties she is typically found entertaining the pups or wandering. Potentially almost dancing around in her wanders while picking out random herbs to add to her collection. Her studies of the earth and what it can do to benefit our health never stop. She is constantly learning new ways to help others even at times she is too tired to keep her eyes open or do anything else.

 I sure got a heavy cardio workout yesterday scraping off the ice from both vehicles after the rain on Saturday froze under a layer of snow overnight into Sunday morning. That kind of temperature change will give you whiplash. The frozen blowing snow covered half of our birdfeeders too so I had to clear those off for our feathered friends. It's despairing when the temperature drops during the day instead of getting warmer. Stupid Arctic Air Mass.

The first page with the disintegrating skull will give you an idea of what this beautifully drawn new story is about. Daisy and her boyfriend Luke are walking home from dinner when they are attacked in a scary black space behind an iron gate. Luke is hauled into the blackness and Daisy has her right eye plucked out but survives. By the end of this issue she's seeing scary things through a haze of red. I loved the art in this and look forward to meeting Mother.

  Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #4 - Jody Houser (writer) Adriana Melo (pencils) Mark Morales & Wade von Grawbadger (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Gabriela Downie (letters). The Floronic Man attacks the girls again. This time in a roadside dinosaur theme park run by a crazy old lady. Poison Ivy figures out how the bad guy is tracking them and Harley fixes that problem with a machete. This is one crazy story.

 Punisher Soviet #2 - Garth Ennis (writer) Jacen Burrows (pencils) Guillermo Ortego (inks) Nolan Woodard (colours) Rob Steen (letters). Frank has reluctantly taken on a teammate in his fight with a Russian mobster. This issue starts that guy's origin story.

 Something is Killing the Children #4 - James Tynion IV (writer) Werther Dell'Edera (art) Miquel Muerto (colours) AndWorld Design (letters). Erica goes shopping for monster killing tools and into the woods we go. Time to meet the monster.

 X-Force #3 - Benjamin Percy (writer) Joshua Cassara (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The enemy is revealed and they are Xeno. Kind of reminds me of the Court of Owls from Batman. Wolverine and Kid Omega rescue Domino from their clutches while a new Charles Xavier is hatched with a rebuilt Cerebro to lead the war. I liked how Magneto made a sword for Charles from the broken Cerebro helmet.

 The Dollhouse Family #2 - M. R. Carey (writer) Peter Gross (layouts) Vince Locke (finishes) Cris Peter (colours) Todd Klein (letters). Maybe I'm wrong but I suspect that the M. in the writer credit stands for Mike. I loved Mike Carey's Vertigo books and this has a very familiar feel. I like how the house is a character too.

 The Immortal Hulk #28 - Al Ewing (writer) Tom Reilly & Matias Bergara (art) Chris O'Halloran (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). The villain gets the spotlight this issue as Roxxon C.E.O. Dario Agger tries to find a way to fight the Hulk. He goes to find an ally on Monster Isle and I laughed when I saw who it was.

 Valkyrie #6 - Al Ewing & Jason Aaron (writers) Pere Perez (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). What a great read. This is an example of how two good writers can produce a highly enjoyable issue of a comic book. Add to that very nice art and you've got a "pick of the week". Part one of "Strange Aeons" starts a new story where Val needs to put together a team to save Death. Doctor Strange is her first recruit and Night Nurse, Cardiac, Doctor Faiza Hussain AKA Excalibur and Manikin make the journey to the valley of the shadow of death. Talk about D-list, but I trust that Al and Jason will make good use of these heroes.

 Detective Comics #1017 - Tom Taylor (writer) Fernando Blanco (art) John Kalisz (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). This is a great one issue story if you want to see why this comic book is on my "must read" list. Batman solves two crimes and I was happy to see Damian helping out. If Tom Taylor did a Robin book, I'd read that too.

 Fantastic Four #17 - Dan Slott (writer) Luciano Vecchio, Carlos Magno, Bob Quinn & Sean Izaakse (art) Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I was wondering why this story was called "Point of Origin" and this issue explain why. We all know that the Fantastic Four were bombarded with cosmic rays when they took their maiden flight and that's what gave them their super powers. Little did we know it wasn't an accident. It's a subtle change and doesn't make a lot of difference in the grand scheme of things but it is kind of neat.

 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #13 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Javier Garron (art pages 1-2, 16-20) Kevin Libranda (art pages 3-8) & Alitha Martinez (art pages 9-13) David Curiel & Protobunker (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I usually get annoyed when an issue is drawn by a bunch of different artists but Javier, Kevin and Alitha all did a splendid job and the story flowed seamlessly. The awesome colouring job helped too. Say hello to Billie Mariana Morales. Miles is now a big brother.

 Superman #18 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ivan Reis (pencils) Joe Prado (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). As big a Brian Bendis fan that I am, I stopped reading this title because I wasn't interested in what was happening in the book. Now I'm interested again. Superman drops a bomb that's going to explode into all kinds of repercussions. I liked how Wonder Woman, Batman and Lex Luthor reacted to the news even though they don't utter a word. That's great art right there. The cover will give you a hint to what Superman's announcement is.

 Fallen Angels #3 - Bryan Hill (writer) Szymon Kudranski (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Cable, Psylocke and X-23's mission to save some children continues and one of the heroes is captured by the enemy. I hope their next story happens in the daytime because these issues have been very dark.

 Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child#1 - Frank Miller (writer) Rafael Grampa (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) John Workman & Deron Bennett (letters). No returning Dark Knight since this story features Lara, Jonathan and Carrie, the kids of the Big Two. They battle old man Joker and old man Darkseid. I loved the art. The writing was annoyingly repetitive. That seems to be Franks writing style now using lots of verbs and choppy little captions. I don't like it. The thing about comic books is that the art and writing go hand in hand and I just couldn't stop reading the words part way and just look at the pretty pictures. Seeing Greta Thunberg on the last page just made me love Rafael even more.

 Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #14 - Tom Taylor (writer) Marguerite Sauvage (art flashback) Ken Lashley (art) Marguerite Sauvage & Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Crappydoodles! This is the last issue. I am sad. I enjoyed the entire 14-issue run. It was Juann Cabal's art that got me hooked but Tom's writing kept me reading. His stories were very Mister Rogers and I liked them a lot. He showed Peter committed to his sense of responsibility and ended this issue nicely. I'm going to miss this title.

 The Batman's Grave #3 - Warren Ellis (writer) Bryan Hitch (pencils) Kevin Nowlan (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Richard Starkings (letters). Batman is working on a case of murder disguised as a suicide. I like how this issue starts and ends with him working the case with Alfred in the Batcave that bookends 10 pages of wordless solo crime scene investigation and a fight with an intruder for a crucial clue.

 2099: Doom #1 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Marco Castiello (art) Chris Sotomayor (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This one-shot doesn't add much to the overall story but I like Chip's writing so I read it. Victor winds up in 2099 fighting his future self. The last page doesn't make a lot of sense so skipping this comic won't hurt much.

 2099: Spider-Man #1 - Nick Spencer (writer) Ze Carlos (art) Brian Reber & Andrew Crossley (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I was as confused as the Miguel in this story when I got to the end. We get a sense of what's happening in 2099 that's bad for everyone but there's no connection to the main story as far as I can make out. These 2099 one-shots have been a waste of time, which doesn't bode well for Marvel's next big event. I'll read 2099 Omega to see if there's a point to this story and I'll read The Amazing Spider-Man #36 that ties into this event because that book is on my "must read" list, but Nick Spencer is skating on thin ice with me.

 Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill #1 - Michael Moreci (writer) Alberto Alburquerque (art) Jay David Ramos (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This was a good single issue story. Beta Ray Bill goes up against the Sentry and saves our universe from the scourge of the Cancerverse. I liked that he's teamed up with Lockjaw.

 Annihilation - Scourge: Silver Surfer #1 - Dan Abnett (writer) Paul Davidson (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I was asked recently if the Silver Surfer was good or evil after the Silver Surfer Black story and I didn't know the answer until now. This tie-in one-shot takes place right after Silver Surfer Black as Norrin Radd breaches the barrier between the positive universe and the Negative Zone to investigate what's causing the mass exodus from Annihilus's realm. Here he finds the means of defeating the Void controlled Sentry and thereby save two universes. He also discovers the ability to merge with another being sort of like DC's Deadman.

When you're dreaming with a broken heart. The waking up is the hardest part...

It almost felt as though his resolve had been broken after going through Night’s trial, but it was that fact alone the fact that he could practically hear his father calling him weak willed that drove him forward through the competitions. He powered through with ease at times running into familiar faces as well as strangers that seemed fairly friendly. It all seemed rather easy to him after Night. That was until he got to Dawn’s Trial.

He stepped into the maze and found himself in the forest again, on the path to his way home. For some reason, there was an excitement with him. It was as though pure undiluted joy would wait for him on the other side of the door. There was a rush within him to get through the door and when he did, at first the living room was empty. He looked around the room, but heard a melodic humming that drew him toward it. Jacen followed the sound back to what was formerly Teddy’s room, now it would be shared. Teddy’s bed was on one wall, and there was a crib over in the corner.

Pride swelled within him every time he looked at the crib. He’d built and painted it. All the while as he did, he’d imagined the little one that would repeat the benefits of this crib. He couldn’t wait for his son to lay comfortably in it. His attention was caught when his gaze finally landed on her humming as she put away clothes that they’d bought in anticipation for their little boy. Jacen’s smile was bright as he made his way over to his wife. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, his heart swelling with love at just the sight of her carrying their child. With his hand on her stomach, he leaned in to kiss her cheek. “How’s our little boy doing, Tor?”

“He’s as strong as ever. He must have had an inkling that it was time for your arrival. He began kicking as soon as you approached.” She moved his hand over to the spot where their child was kicking. The slight push against his hand was a wonder to him. There was a little life growing. How he’d imagined the combination of them, wondered just how he would turn out. Tauren Adler-Warren would be well loved, regardless of what and who he turned out to be. 

“I’ll try not to rile him up even more. Though sometimes when I’m talking to him he really gets going.” The brilliant smile on his face was incomparable to anything else. True happiness radiated from him.  Jacen walked over to the rocking chair in the room, taking a seat and pulling her into his lap. Jacen closed his eyes as he rocked them gently back and forth. They sat there in comfortable silence as Tori hummed to their sweet boy with her head rested on his shoulder.

“Tori? Tell me about our wedding?” He said. His eyes still closed completely encompassed in the moment that he was in. In the lie that for a brief moment he wanted to live in. Jacen wanted to delve further into it, as real life resembled nothing like this. 

Her soft laugh sounded and it was almost like music to his hears. “You aren’t usually this sentimental,” she pointed out. “But it was a small ceremony. Only close friends and family. We exchanged vows, said I do, and Rowan threw us a big reception, contrary to my protests.”

For a moment, it was easy for him to get lost in this. When he asked about the wedding, she didn’t add any mush, any declarations of love. It felt almost authentic to Victoria and their relationship. How it was more comfortable silence than words sometimes. How it was more actions less speaking. That was until, she reached up fingertips gliding along his cheek. “I love you, Jacen,” she said softly and with conviction. He could tell that she meant it, but that was what broke the spell. The words came like a shock to his system. It was as if someone had dashed him with freezing water, breaking him free from the false sense of security this Day Dream seemed to hold. 

Victoria Adler would never utter those words to him so freely. She also would never have lived there with him in the forest, giving up her life to have his child or be his wife. Not once when he thought about the two of them did he ever imagine the possibility of this. But it must have been somewhere deep down in his subconscious -  a desire that he couldn’t even admit to himself. It was hard to want a life that wouldn’t fit into that of the life that your mate could never give. And that, after all, had always been their issue. Their lives, and the trajectory of their relationship, would never allow them to arrive at this, and if it did, Jacen knew that Tori wouldn’t be happy or satisfied. He probably should have known that it was fake when she said they’d gotten married and her sister threw them a reception. They’d have to know he existed for that to happen.

Jacen tore himself a way from the Day Dream to continue on through the maze. It was surprisingly easier to walk away from knowing that it was an impossibility with the woman in the dream, but he also knew that for him in general that particular life, would only be that. A dream. The realization of want that had been buried so deep that even he couldn’t admit it was now fresh on the surface of his mind. It was almost like reopening a wound.
