Tyren Perry teamed up with sisters Jania and Jaimee Foxworth to form the trio S.H.E.

Tyren and Jania had previously sang together as backing vocalists on Quincy Jones' Back On The Block album in 1989, the same year Tyren released her only solo album. At ten, Jaimee was cast in the sitcom Family Matters for four seasons, but then let go. She managed to get onto another sitcom, Getting By, but that too was short-lived. Jaimee, Jania and Tyren then decided to band together as a singing group.

The three girls were noticed by Shaquille O'Neal, who featured them on his second album, You Can't Stop The Reign, in 1996. He signed them to his vanity label that same year, and they released "My Secret Is."

Their career as a trio didn't exactly pan out though, and Jaimee ended up battling substance abuse, and starring in adult videos. Meanwhile, Tyren and Jania continued to pursue music.

One of the biggest bummers of Family Matters is the disappearance of Judy Winslow, played by Jaimee Foxworth. Yes that she was unjustly fired and the character was never mentioned again, but that's not all.

In season 2 episode 18, "Life of the Party," the Winslows discuss where to go on their vacation. Judy suggests that they all go to Disney World, but by the episode's end, the family decide to go to Lake Geneva.

In season 6 episodes 22 and 23, the entire family goes to Disney World, but of course, Judy had already been erased from history for two years at that point.

What an insult to injury.

Family Matters

I loved watching Family Matters growing up, but I never saw every episode and I definitely never saw them in order until now. After 3+ months (shout out to Hulu!) I finally saw the entire series in order. Here are my thoughts.

1. The show was always better with Rachel in it. Telma Hopkins never should have been bumped down to guest star with a few random appearances.

2. The writers absolutely needed to explain what happened to Judy. It would have been so easy for a character to mention her every now and then or something! Dropping her and having everyone pretend like she never existed was a bad move. And then to essentially replace her later with 3J…it just didn’t make sense, although I loved Orlando Brown/3J.

3. They never should have replaced JoMarie Payton as Harriette, especially in the middle of a season. I know that by season 9 she would have been playing this character for over a decade, but either her contract needed to be reworked to keep her until the end of the season, or the writers should have stopped writing storylines for Harriette. Judyann Elder was fine, but she wasn’t JoMarie.

4. STEVE AND LAURA. I’m SO glad they ended up together. I always knew they did but I never knew how. Until about a month ago I had no idea how the writers managed to separate Stefan and Steve. But gosh darn it, we deserved to see their wedding!

5. I don’t know how they managed to get away with a part sci-fi/fantasy sitcom, and I don’t know how in the world they got it to work, but it did. Maybe because it was the TV wizards Miller and Boyett. I love this show.

any thoughts on how family matters randomly got rid of their “original” third Winslow child (judy), kinda midway through the series? I mean I know the aunt and grandma eventually left too but they were still occasionally mentioned here and there compared to judy, from what I recall?

My thoughts lie less with the show and more with how I kinda felt bad for Jaimee Foxworth for losing such a potentially career-starting role at such a young age. That said, I'm not gonna shame her for her brief stint as a pornographic actress. Sex work is real work. I only hope that she wasn't abused or had her consent violated during her time in that industry, and I'm glad she's doing well now.

Unfortunately, what happened to Jaimee is just one instance of many in the TV industry, ESPECIALLY in the late 20th century. Between the dad from Good Times, Trini, Zack, and Jason from Power Rangers, and ESPECIALLY Lisa Bonet on The Cosby Show, you can find many instances of this. And these are just the situations that we know about.

Situations like Roseanne whose firing was justified are sadly the exception rather than the norm.
