A Casual Kiss

A lot has happened to Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes over his long life. He used to be a ladies’ man and a traditional sort of soldier. He used to have all his natural limbs. He used to take maybe a touch too much pride in his appearance. A lot has also changed.

Wars change people. Injuries change people. People simply change over time.

And Bucky Barnes has been around a long, long time.

You knew all this from the beginning, of course, because his whole tragic history had already been slashed across newspapers and television by the time you started work in the same building.

He started out cold, then he became reserved, and then he was cautious. You didn’t even know he knew your name until the day he—very formally and awkwardly—asked you out, and the relationship developed…predictably.

That’s the best word for it. Predictable.

There were a few dates before he hugged you goodnight. The next time, he kissed your cheek. The next, you got a chaste peck on the lips. So on and so forth.

Measured increments of intimacy.

It was predictable and still wonderful.

Bucky isn’t good with ‘easy-breezy’ anything, you see. He’s intense and considerate. He plans ahead and for all contingencies, and so you’re taken aback by this random passing in of your department leaving the conference room and Buck’s team coming in.

There’s plenty of people around. Normally, that means a kind smile, perhaps being asked to step aside for a moment so he can say hello and check on your day, maybe check on your plans for dinner, but today? Today is different.

He’s smiling alright, smiling wider and brighter than you’ve ever seen him on the job. His shoulders are relaxed and loose. He’s strutting right for you, and suddenly, like a choreographed dance move, he twists, kissed your forehead, and twists again, still walking but backwards now.

Bucky winks at you as his metal hand finishes a soft graze down your arm.

Butterflies erupt in your stomach.

“Love you, doll,” he whispers though at least half the room can probably hear.

It’s not as if no one knows at work. You’ve dated for months, and for that whole stretch, Bucky’s been a perfect gentleman, just very…not casual. This is new.

So why not make it even stranger?

Your boyfriend snaps his flesh fingers like he just remembered something, nearly skipping the couple of feet to your side.

“Hey, so, I know we were doing movie night, but Sam’s taking some folks out to the corner bar. His treat.”

You can’t help but snort.

“Oh? And let me guess. You—who is unable to get drunk—would like to make him pay for the multiple bottles of top-shelf liquor you can consume.”

Bucky waggles an eyebrow, and you’re stunned.

“Know me so well,” he coos, leaning in to plant one more solid smooch on your lips.

Your lipstick stains his mouth until Bucky’s tongue wipes it away.

“I’ll pick you up at your office.”

You’ve hardly controlled the flutter in your gut but now have a grin fighting to break free. All you can do is nod, heading for the exit, thinking:

People always change over time…and sometimes, change is for the better.

“If no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room, I’ll take the lead,” Jake startles you when he places his hand on your shoulder. “Y/N, this will be hard for you. Are you sure you want to stay?”

“This is my life,” you say, holding Bucky’s gaze. “I played by someone else’s rules all my life. If Fowler is after all of us, I need to know why.”

“We should find out where Natasha is hiding,” Steve throws in. “Maybe she can be useful. We could use her against Fowler.”

“Well,” Lloyd chuckles, “about that…she’s gone.”

“Gone?” you question. “What do you mean, Lloyd? Did she leave town already?"

“I think he killed her,” Bucky grunts. “Right? You wanted to play the hero for my wife and killed Natasha!”

“Someone had to do it, Barnes. All of you didn’t have the balls to put your hands on that bitch. She wanted to kill Y/N. I only protected my sugar plum.”

Your voice trembles as you say, “You killed her?” It’s not a secret that you hated Natasha Romanoff with passion, but you feel guilt grip your heart. Lloyd killed her for you. 

“Fowler won’t like that you destroyed his toy,” Jake rolls his eyes. “Seriously. We talked about impulse control, Lloyd. You can’t run around town and kill people!”

“I didn’t run around town to kill random people. I prepared a trap for that bitch, and she walked right into it. She believed I want to help her kill Y/N,” Lloyd shrugs as everyone in the room looks at him. “Fowler won’t know it was one of us. Now, shut up, and let’s get back to business.”

“Right,” Jake glances at you. “You okay, Y/N?”

“I don’t know…” you admit. “I’m glad she’s gone but feel guilty at the same time. I need to process the new information first. But…uh…thank you, Lloyd. I know you meant well.”

“Anytime, sugar plum,” Llyod winks at you. “If we could all focus on the problem at hand. We need to take Fowler down. I don’t care if he’s Barnes’s brother or not. He must fall.”

“Agreed,” Steve hates to admit it, but Nick is a threat to you. “I don’t know about his endgame. We can’t sit around and wait for Fowler to attack us.”

Bucky sighs deeply. He drops his eyes to the wedding band around his finger, as he considers Lloyd’s suggestion. “He’s still my brother.”

“He wouldn’t hesitate to kill you, Bucky. You know that. He was the one messing with your marriage,” Steve points at Jake. “Let him show you what he did!”

“He fucked Natasha too, didn’t he?” you ask. “That’s what you are trying to hide from me. Steve, be honest with me.”

“That bastard dicked her down like there’s no tomorrow,” Lloyd huffs. “She faked it though. I bet he didn’t feed her kitty well.”

“Lloyd!” Jake exclaims loudly. “Dude, Y/N is right here. Watch your tongue.”

“O got a very talented tongue, and you’d love to feel it on…” Lloyd trails off. He huffs and shakes his head. “Anyways. What I wanted to say is that Fowler and Romanoff worked together. Before I got rid of her slutty ass, she admitted that Fowler asked her to mess with Barnes back then too.”

“What?” Bucky feels his heart break all over again. “She seduced me because of Nick. He wanted her to do so. But…why?”

Lloyd scrunches up his nose. “That’s the million-dollar question, Barnes. It seems our sweet sugar plum seems to be his endgame.” He points out, glaring at Steve. “He’s all over her, Rogers. I think this has less to do with Barnes and more to do with Y/N.”

“What’s that supposed to mean? Nick wants to hurt me. He’s after me because of me,” Bucky grunts. “He was always jealous of me. Nick wants what I have.”

“Had,” you correct. “Even if Natasha only seduced you because of Nick, you still had sex with her, Bucky. Nothing will change your part in this game.”

“Back to business,” Lloyd slams his fist onto the table, making you jump. “While you tried to play footsy with Y/N,” he points at Steve, “Jake and I made sure this place is safe. It’s a fortress.”

“Nick must fall." Bucky admits. He shakes his head, asking himself once more if he could have done anything to save his brother. “It can’t be helped. I tried so often to…never mind.”

“Y/N is the key,” Jake says. “I don’t know why, but he’s obsessed with her. All his outgoing calls have one thing in common. He told everyone to get hold of her.”

“Don’t you dare say it,” Steve jumps up from his seat to tower over Jake. "We won't use Y/N as bait. NEVER!”

“AGREED!” Bucky exclaims loudly. “I will go to him and kill him. End of story. He’s my brother. I got her into this mess. I’ll make sure Y/N is safe from now on.”

“No,” you clear your throat. “Nick is after me for a reason. I don’t know his reasons, but we will find out before we kill him. Maybe if I talk to him, he’ll give up.”

“Doll, I love you but that’s the stupidest thing you ever said,” Bucky tuts. “I know I have no right to tell you what to do…”

“Damn right,” you grunt and slam your fist onto the table. “You’ve got no right to tell me what to do, Bucky! Not after what you did to us! You ruined our marriage for that bitch again. Now he tries to get his hands on me, and I have no clue why. He wanted Natasha to seduce you. Twice. It was a goddamn trap to destroy our relationship.”

“We should all calm down,” Steve tries to calm you. “Y/N, I agree with Bucky on this. I won’t risk your life.”

“This is a stupid idea, Y/N,” you roll your eyes as Jake talks to you. He gave you an earpiece and a transponder. Lloyd gave you a gun. Nothing like good friends.

Now Jake is muttering in your ear, telling you to come back and forget about your plan to talk to Nick.

“Listen, we need to find out what the fuck is going on. Nick Fowler ruined my relationship with Bucky twice. I want him to pay for it.”

“Rogers is about to kill us all. Don’t get yourself killed or he will go rampage,” Jake whispers now. “And we don’t want to talk about Barnes.”

“I’ve got this, Jakie. You know me,” you whisper as Nick approaches your table. "He’s here now. Just listen. I’ll be safe.”

You try to keep a straight face. This was your idea. If you want answers, you need to meet the enemy. “I was pleased to hear you wanted to talk to me,” Nick, ever the charmer, purrs as he takes your hand to kiss it. “I’ve been waiting to get you alone again.”

“I want answers,” you quip. “Whatever is going on between you and your brother, keep me out of this. But I want to know why you ruined my relationship. I deserve that much.”

He grips your hand, sighing deeply. “Sweets, I had hoped you want to meet up with me.”

“Sweets…” you frown deeply. You remember that nickname. When you first met Bucky he called you that. “What do you want from me? You don’t even know me.”

You try to wiggle out of his grip. “Don’t you remember? I met you first, sweets. We talked for hours, and then I had to leave. You fell in love with me, not Bucky.”

“I-I,” you shake your head. “We didn’t talk for hours, Nick. It was like five minutes. You ran into me, and we talked for a moment.”

“No-no…we talked for much longer,” he grips your hand even tighter, making you wince. “You must believe me.”

“We were just kids, Nick. Christ. I barely remember what we were talking about,” you sniff. "I didn’t fall in love with Bucky that day, or the day after. It took me months to talk to him again. Back then I had a huge crush on Steve, my best friend since childhood. Whatever you believed happened back then wasn’t real.” 

“You fell in love with him because of me,” Nick insists. He tries to make you see that you should be in love with him, not his brother. “You should have become my wife.”

“No, she shouldn’t,” Steve presses a gun into Nick’s side. “I will tell you this only once. Let go of her. Y/N doesn’t want to be with you. She’s not yours, and never will be.”

“She will,” Nick grunts, but releases your hand, “be mine. Wait and see.”

Steve would love to kill Nick right here, in the middle of the café. But he won’t risk killing innocent bystanders or putting you in danger. “Soon this will end…”

You step away from Nick, nodding at Steve as you feel another presence behind you. “Let’s go, sugar plum. Your hero has arrived,” Lloyd smirks at Nick. “Oh, and Rogers tagged along…”

A quiet giggle flutters from beside Mace as you bat away your boyfriend's wandering hands, "you're so handsy, daddy, did you miss me that much?"

Mace clears his throat, counting down in his head before standing up and gathering his things. All except the weed on the table, Jake hadn't paid for it but he's willing to lose the cash if it meant getting out of this hot and smokey dorm room before he started jerking off right on the damn couch.

"Where are you going, Mace?" Jake asks, directing your head to his neck. One of his hands on your hip and the other on your ass in the tightest, tiniest shorts Mace has ever seen.

"I, uhm... I've got a test tomorrow." He lies, the faint sound of your wet lips kissing Jake's neck seem louder than the narrator's voice.

"I thought you said you were free until Friday?" The blond frowns, easily reading Mace’s face, “C'mon, don't go so soon. We haven't hung out in so—" He's cut off by a groan, and curses under his breath, "—fuck, baby, we've still got company."

You giggle again, you were always so giggly when you were high, giggly and horny. "I know." You arch your back, peering over your shoulder at the brunet. "Don't go, Macey, I love when it's just the three of us."

He doesn't know if it was your puppy dog eyes, or your pretty pout, or the little wiggle of your ass, but he settles down on the couch again. This time, busying himself with lighting a half-finished joint so he doesn't have to watch you and Jake dry hump a foot away.

"Look at that shit—" the television displays a zoomed-out view of the solar system, all of the planets orbiting the sun, "how the hell is there so much space for all of that?" Jake slumps back, running his hands all over your body absentmindedly.

"It's called space, dummy."

"Oh, shut up." He swats your behind. Mace has long gotten used to Jake's obsession with you and touching you, hell, if he was your boyfriend, he'd be the same. "Mace, you still waiting to hear back from NASA for the internship?"

The brunet averts his gaze, exhaling slowly and watching the smoke float to the ceiling. "Actually, I already did. I got the acceptance email last week."

"Ah! Congrats!" You shout, grinning madly. "I knew you could do it, you're the smartest person I know." Jake clears his throat and you roll your eyes, "You're one of the smartest people I know. Isn’t he super smart, Jake?"

"Yeah, he is. Why don't you give him that reward we talked about?" A light appears behind your eyes but dims when you hesitate. Jake is quick to calm you down and presses a soft kiss to your cheek, "It's okay. Go on, baby."

In a relaxed daze, Mace watches you scoot over, and swing your leg over his. You settle in his lap, steadying yourself on his broad shoulders and he stiffens, choking out your name.

You shush him, "Before you came over, Jake said we could kiss a little..." You trail off, "said you've been really sad since you were dumped."

Under you, he's rigid. His thighs tense when you brush his bulge, ugh but could you blame him when you were moaning and whimpering while making out with Jake, literally right next to him? "Y-Yeah but, Jake, this is your girl—"

"I'm fine with it if she's fine with it." He snatches the spliff from Mace and reclines, taking a pull, "you deserve it, man. Your ex screwed you over big time, and you're still hung up on her.”

Jake is right. She did screw him over, by stealing his (drug-but-still) hard earned money and fleeing to who knows where.

Mace stares up at you with red-rimmed blue eyes, a vibrant cherry blooming from under his short stubble on his cheeks.

"I've always wondered if your lips were as soft as they look." You whisper, brushing your nose on his, "are you gonna help me find out, Macey?"

With half a breath, he surges up, slamming his lips against yours. It's wet and messy, full of everything he's ever felt for you but kept under wraps (for obvious reasons because crushing on his most loyal customer and best friend's girlfriend was asking for trouble). Your teeth clash and he growls into the kiss, tilting your head and slipping his tongue into your willing mouth.

Jake groans lowly, rubbing over the tent in his jeans, his eyes locked on you both. The documentary is forgotten for the sake of this—something you've talked about dozens of times.

Luckily, you two had a very healthy relationship, and could talk about anything and be unafraid of what kind of response you’d receive.

You knew everything about each other, from deepest fears to darkest fantasies. Openness, honesty, and vulnerability were important, and it took a while to get here, but you’ve both never been more comfortable and confident in a relationship.

It also helped that Jake knew about Mace's feelings about you from mere observation. Those longing looks and how he always smiled the brightest and laughed the loudest when you were around. He didn't need a 4.0 GPA to notice that his best friend wanted you (but he had a 4.0 GPA anyway and he was very proud of it).

Jake was in love, so he knew the signs of someone else falling in love. And Mace wasn't the best at hiding his feelings and desires either.

Your outstretched hand catches his attention and he goes to you like a moth to a flame. After taking the last pull from the joint, he discards it in the ashtray on the table. He waits for you, grunting at the string of saliva connecting your mouth to his best friend's.

Your eyes are as sparkly as the stars in the sky—and Jake knows this was a good idea.

He cups your cheek and presses his lips to yours, slowly exhaling into your mouth. Under you, Mace pants heavily, his fingers digging into your hips as he watches you two. You and Jake fit together perfectly, always have, and always will.

You pull away with a hum and with another rock of your hips, you capture Mace's agape mouth in a kiss. The smoke flows from you into him, igniting a fire he's extinguished time and time again, but now it can burn brightly, blinding all its witnesses.

He’s so fucking whipped, it’s almost pitiful when he chases after you, the smoke puffing from his pink, swollen lips. Sighing happily, you lean back with a cheeky smile, so effortlessly beautiful, they could look at you all day.

You’re both of their dreams incarnated, manifested into a living breathing human—or the weed was making them all sappy.

"Awh shit, we missed my favourite part! I love when they talk about Jupiter's moons! Europa is my baby."

"We'll rewind it, baby." Jake chuckles and pats your ass, glancing at his friend. "Mace, you staying the night for a rewatch?"

As if history were repeating itself, your mouth trails from his jaw to his neck. And he wonders how Jake even managed to speak with your teasing kisses sprinkling along his skin.

Your lips ghost his ear, “please stay, I want you to stay."

His heart swells and he clutches you a little tighter. "I'll stay." He gives in without a beat, “I'll take the couch."

Jake scoffs, reaching for another spliff and the lighter. "Yeah right, we could all fit on the bed."

Before Mace could protest, his mind goes blank as your hands through his buzzed hair. "If you think we were just gonna kiss all night, you're in for a treat, Macey."

“What are you reading, sugar plum?” Lloyd casually strolls into the living room, glancing at the magazine you are reading. “Anything interesting?”

“Not really,” you sigh deeply. “I wanted to distract myself for a while. Jake said you wanted to tell me something. He had this look, ya know. I know he’s hiding things from me.”

“We discussed this last night and decided to tell you. I was against telling you but got…outnumbered,” your friend shrugs. “I came too late. Had things to worry about."

“Lloyd?”

He hums, as his eyes drift toward the magazine. “Yeah sugar plum.” 

“Where have you been last night? I called, but you didn’t answer. You worry me. Fowler is still in town. We need to know where you are heading, Lloyd.”

“I had to-" He bites his tongue. It’s the wrong moment to tell you that he killed Natasha last night. His team has taken care of her body. No one will find her rotten bones. “take care of things.”

“You had sex,” you smirk. “Right? There’s lipstick on your collar.” Lloyd stiffens as you point at his collar. He double-checked his clothes but missed Natasha’s blood ended up on his shirt. “You naughty man.”

“Uh-yeah,” he rubs his thumb over the collar to feel the now-dried blood. “I gotta change. That naughty bitch ruined my favorite shirt.”

Lloyd points at the magazines, and says, “Don’t read that shit. It will rot your brain."

“I was just…” you huff. “Did you know that experts put your chances of getting divorced at thirty-nine percent? That’s a lot, don’t you think?” You look up at Lloyd. “I should have known this before getting married."

“Statistics are not for me, Y/N,” he says while cracking his neck. “I do what I have to do and don’t care about statistics or chances. I’m Lloyd Hansen. No one stops me.”

“I love your attitude, always did,” you chuckle. “Thank you for always being there for me. You know I love you, right?”

“I know,” he grins. “Who wouldn’t fall for my gorgeous ass and my mustache?" Lloyd winks at you. “You must love Lloyd Hansen.”

“You are so full of yourself.”

“What did you not understand?” Nick throws his hands up. “I want you to get me his wife. My brother’s empire will fall, and I will take over his throne, his queen by my side.”

“Why are you so obsessed with that woman? You don’t even know her,” Mace exasperatedly says. She sighs and shakes her head. “Nick, tell me about her. Is this a sick obsession or do you want to hurt your brother?”

“I met her first!” Nick yells. “When we were fifteen, I sneaked out of my mother’s house and took a bus. I ran away to drive back home and ran into Y/N. She believed I’m her neighbor’s son. Bucky. I talked to her first, and she fell in love with Bucky because of me! She should’ve been mine.”

“Fuck, no. Don’t tell me we came here for a woman,” Mace yells back. “Does Romanoff not do it for you anymore?" Do you need a fresh hole to fuck? I won’t start a war with Barnes and Rogers over some pussy.”

“Stop talking like that about her! I failed once, and they got back together. Not this time. I will make her see she belongs with me…”

“I still think this is a stupid idea. No, the stupidest idea in the history of stupid ideas,” Lloyd grunts as he plops down on one of the chairs in the conference room at his house. “Why is that bastard here too?”

Lloyd points at Bucky sitting opposite him. He narrows his eyes at your soon-to-be ex-husband. 

“Fowler fucked Bucky over too," Steve responds. “He deserves to know. If not for them, Y/N and he could still be a happy couple.”

“You mean if he didn’t stick his dick into that skank,” Lloyd says in response. “That’s what happened. It doesn’t matter Romanoff planned all this. Barnes still went home with that bitch and fucked her. End of story.”

“Shut up. What do you know about me?" Bucky grunts. “Steve, would you tell me about Nick and Natasha?”

“We are waiting for Y/N to join us,” Jake looks up from his laptop to glare at Bucky. “You are only here because Rogers insisted on bringing you here.”

“Steve, Jake?” you call from outside the room. “Lloyd said you wanted to talk to me now. Uh-can someone lend me a hand? I got food.”

“Wait. I’ll help you." Bucky wants to jump up, but Lloyd is faster. He holds your husband down by his shoulders, keeping him from getting up. “Let go of me, bastard.”

“Steve, Jake, would you please help, Y/N?" Lloyd bares his teeth. “Her husband is occupied elsewhere.”

“Lloyd. No fighting,” Jake tries to keep Lloyd from killing your husband. “For Y/N. Please keep your shit together for one night.”

“Fine. If he keeps his hands to himself and his mouth shut,” Lloyd glares at Bucky. “One false move and you are dead.”

Lloyd steps away. He huffs and sits back down in his chair. While Jake and Steve take the food tray out of your hands, Lloyd starts a staring contest with Bucky. 

“Why is Bucky here?" you whisper as you enter the room. “Steve, you promised me I wouldn't see him. Now you bring him here?”

“Doll, we need to tell you something. Bucky should hear this too. It’s about Nick’s plans,” Steve softly says. He guides you toward a chair next to Lloyd. “Please trust us in this.”

“Okay,” you sniff. “It’s just unsettling to be in the same room with him.”

“I’m sorry,” Bucky whispers. You refuse to look at him. It’s just too hard having him around. You accepted that there is no saving your marriage. Still, your heart hurts whenever you look at him.

"You fucked up. Literally. Not for the first time." Lloyd grunts, "Save it, Barnes. Saying sorry won't fix anything.

“Guys, no fights," Jake shouts as he places the tray with food on the conference table. “Y/N made food, and we need to talk about Nick’s plans. If we want to survive this, we all need to work together.”

“Survive this? What’s that supposed to mean?” Steve looks at Jake. He furrows his brows. “What didn’t you tell us yet, Jake?”

“It means Fowler didn't come here alone. He has allies. Damn grim allies,” Jake opens a file on his laptop. “Let the information I found speak for itself. Fowler is out for blood, and I’m afraid it is our blood…”

"Wait for it, guys," Lloyd chuckles as you try to cover his mouth. “Sugar plum, no. I want to tell them about what you did!”  

“What did she do?” Matt asks. “If it was illegal, don’t tell me. I don't want you to tell me anything about illegal activities.”

“Don’t get your panties in a twist, lawyer boy.”

“Would you just tell us what happened, Lloyd? We got better things to do than listening to you boasting about your adventures with Y/N,” Jake mutters.

“So, we were getting some ice cream. Suddenly Y/N jumped up, ran toward Barnes, and slapped him across the face." Lloyd grins now. “His cheek was red! She even left a handprint.”

“She slapped Bucky?” Steve looks up from the papers Jake handed to him. “When did that happen?”

“After I picked her up from the spa. Around three hours ago,” Lloyd says, still grinning. “Damn, his head snapped to the side. Sugar plum has a deadly right hand.”

“Today? Three hours ago?” Steve shakes his head. “That’s impossible. I was with Bucky the whole day. I left him an hour ago.”

“I slapped him," you defend Lloyd. “I recognize my cheating bastard of a husband. How can you believe we lie to you?”

“I didn’t say you lied, Y/N. I just don’t understand how it was possible for Bucky to be in two places at the same time. I swear he was with me all day. I tried to get more information out of him.”

“I don’t want to hear more about the skank he fucked behind my back,” you scrunch your nose up. “I don’t give a shit about his excuses. It doesn’t matter if he fucked her one time or fifty times.”

Steve told you everything Bucky revealed to him. You felt like someone slapped you in the face hearing that Bucky thought about taking care of Natasha’s non-existent child.

Even though Steve said that Natasha lied, you won’t forgive your husband. Nothing will change your mind this time. Bucky knows what his infidelity did to you last time.

You hid at home and retreated from the world for months. If not for Jake, Matt, and Lloyd you would’ve ended up becoming a hermit and owning twenty cats.

“Bucky’s guilt aside, he was with me the whole time. Whoever you slapped today wasn’t him.”

You frown deeply. “That’s impossible, Steve. That man looks exactly like Bucky! Maybe he sneaked out while you were busy with something else.”

“He walked a bit cockier," Lloyd adds.

Steve and you jerk your head toward Lloyd. “What?” you say in unison.

“The way a man walks tells me about his character and if he's got balls, sugar plum,” Lloyd shrugs. “Jake walks like a virgin.” He grins now.

“I’m not a virgin, asshat,” Jake grumbles.

“Rogers walks like he hasn't had his dick sucked in months.”

“Lloyd,” you tut. “We wanted to hear about that guy I slapped!”

“I see things other people don’t even know exist. I call it walking-profiling," Lloyd proudly explains. “I walk like I own the ground I’m stepping on. Self-confident and sexy.”

He winks at you and Steve.

“Lloyd…” you groan this time. “Please…I’m getting a headache here.”

“Whoever that guy was, he seemed unbothered and carefree. A man who just lost his beloved wife and fucked up his life doesn’t walk like that. He strode into the ice cream parlor, sugar plum. He looked like your deadbeat of a husband but that’s all…”

You throw your hands up. “Lloyd, it was Bucky.”

“Y/N, I think Lloyd got a point there,” Steve says. He drops his gaze and refuses to look you in the eyes. “Bucky and his family have more secrets than you’d believe.”

You give Steve the stink eye. It’s the wrong time to mess with you. “Fuck his secrets.”

“Secrets?” Jake asks. “I like digging out dirty little secrets.” He cracks his knuckles. “Let me get to work. I will find all of them.”

“Not this secret.”

Steve licks his lips. “You know that Bucky’s mother left the family? She just walked out of the house and never came back.”

“We already know every detail of his sob story,” Lloyd sneers. “Are you fishing for sympathy here? It happened to all of us. My childhood wasn’t all rainbows and cuddles either.”

“That’s not-“ Steve grunts. “Would you shut your mouth for a few moments, Hansen? I’m breaking another promise I made. Don’t make this any harder for me.”

“Steve, just tell us what’s going on,” you softly say. “Please.”

“Winnifred left Bucky and her husband behind, but she took someone with her,” he says with a cracked smile. “George and Bucky never talked about her again. It’s the best-hidden secret you will ever hear about.”

“She took someone with her. Her lover maybe?”

“Her other son.”

You choke on your spit when Steve reveals Bucky’s family’s secret.

“What? Bucky doesn’t have a brother.”

“I’m sorry, Y/N. Nick was born 35 minutes before his brother. Bucky never got over the fact that Winnifred took Nick with her and left him behind.”

“That’s just…awful,” you sniffle. “How can a mother do such a horrid thing? She left Bucky behind and took his brother with her.”

“Bucky and Nick never got along. They loved to fight over every little thing. Toys, their mother’s attention. Bucky always tried to keep up with his big brother.”

I don't understand why Bucky didn't tell me about it. I can’t believe he hid this from me too,” you shake your head in disbelief. “I guess I never knew my husband at all.”

“Sadly, I found out about his brother in the most painful way. When I ran into him a few years ago, I thought it was Bucky. Nick almost killed me that night. He let me go to deliver a message to his brother.”

“What message?” Lloyd asks. "Come on. Don’t leave us hanging. Give us the juicy details.”

“Nick wanted me to tell Bucky that he’s planning to come for him one day and rob him of everything he owns away from him,” Steve sighs deeply. “While Bucky held a grudge against his mother for leaving him behind, Nick hated his mother for bringing him with her. He believed it was Bucky’s fault that his mother took him away from his family. It was Nick who should’ve taken over the empire of their father.”

“Fucking shit, sugar plum,” Lloyd exclaims loudly. “You married the wrong brother…”

“Interesting. It looks like my brother’s wife filed for divorce." Nick dips his head to glance at Mace. “Mace, I’m talking to you.”

“I don’t get why you are obsessed with your brother. You built up an empire on your own. Nick you never needed your father or his influence,” Mace takes a sip from her drink. “What’s this about his wife now? I think you should just leave that woman be.”

“Why would I do such a thing?” Nick grins darkly. “I will get her in my clutches and hit my brother where it hurts.”

"He cheated on her,” she glares at Nick. “You usually don't care about others' feelings, but leave that woman alone. I sent you the file this morning. Do me and that woman a favor and read what I dug out…”

“Find her,” Bucky barks at his men. He staggers while walking back toward the bedroom. “If you don’t find my wife within the next five hours you are all fired.”

“Bucky, you should stop drinking and get your shit together." Sam rolls his eyes at Bucky’s antics. “I know you are suffering but you brought this upon yourself. Wherever your wife is at the moment, she’s better off without you.”

“I have broken her heart twice now. There is no turning back,” Bucky shrugs. “I gave her wings. As a husband, I never treated my wife like an arm candy or controlled her. I let her throw a tantrum for a while and then I’ll get her back.”

“You should know better than this. Why don’t you admit that you weren’t in this marriage for a while? You would’ve never cheated on Y/N if you truly loved her. It was you pressuring Y/N into having a baby. And then you pulled back.”

“Maybe we have been through a rough patch. This doesn’t mean I will give her up so easily…”

Lloyd glares at Jake as he asks, “Where’s Y/N?”

“I don’t know,” Jake shrugs. “She’s not our hostage, dude. Y/N said something about getting some fresh air. I think she wanted to sit outside in the crappy backyard you call a garden.”

“She’s nowhere to be found, Jensen! It was your job to keep an eye on her while I was away. You never know what Barnes will do if he finds her. He’s a slimy bastard.”

“Let me trace her phone,” Jake shrugs when Lloyd stares at him. “What? I want to keep Y/N safe too. She’s my friend and helped me get together with my girl.”

“I don’t want to hear about your love story. All I want you to focus on is finding Y/N. Check if she’s safe.”

“You’re worried about her.”

Lloyd huffs. “I flirted with her to make her feel special. But she’s like a sister to me. I don’t want her to get hurt.”

“I’ll find her in no time…”

“I don’t know who you are,” you look over your shoulder to glare at the woman following you around town, “but you are not as good as you think you are. I saw you the moment I got out of my friend’s car. And just so you know, my friend was following you while you were spying on me.”

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” Mace reprimands. She’s pissed that you caught her.

“You changed your jacket once, and let your hair down at the last store,” you chuckle. “You’re not one of my husband’s minions. I assume you’re an interested third party.”

“Listen…I’m not here to listen to your accusations.”

At her words, you turn around to look at Mace. “And I’m not some possession you can snatch out of Bucky’s hands. Get out of sight before your stylish blouse turns crimson.”

She gasps as you press a gun into her stomach. “I didn’t come here to hurt you.”

“Says the woman stalking me,” you huff. “Get out of my sight before you end up six feet under.”

“Mace, leave us alone,” Nick steps toward you and his right-hand woman. “I can handle it from here on.”

You look Nick up and down. Lloyd was right. Nick undoubtedly looks like your husband, but he carries himself in a different way.

“What I said to your minion stands for you too,” you jerk your head toward the exit of the store. “I’m not in the mood to get between the lines in the beef you are having with my soon-to-be ex-husband.”

“So, you know who I am?” He steps closer and wraps his hand around the hand holding the gun. “I won’t harm you. I came here to offer…revenge.”

He smirks as you unlock your gun. “I said. Get lost.”

“Bucky didn’t know what he had in you,” he muses. “I wouldn’t make the same mistake, sweetness. I would have given the world to you, and a baby.”

Your hand hitting his cheek hard takes Nick by surprise. “Never get close to me again. I don’t give a shit about you, Bucky, or whatever sick game you are playing. I’m just done.”

“Did you ever check if it wasn’t my brother who wasn’t able to give you a baby?” Nick leans closer to whisper in your ear. “Let’s be friends, sweetness. I can give you what you want. Revenge on the people hurting you…”
