Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Im not having a very good night. I feel just absolutely miserable. And i trimmed my bangs to try to feel better about myself and now there are little hair shards in my sweatshirt and just everything feels bad tonight. It sucks. I just want to feel okay in my own house!! I hate feeling so bad all of the time. I thought I was getting better. But I just feel worse.
Getting really bad sleep last night didnt help the situation. The cats were crying and acting crazy all night. I love Andrew, he is very sweet. But he needs to stop biting sweetP! SweetP doesnt understand and doesnt do anything and just cries. Its not fun! SweetP doesnt understand cat gestures and the interactions are rough at best.It was really distressing and we tried to sequester them but they kept being loud and so sleep wasnt ideal.
But I didnt feel so bad today. I woke up around 9 when James was leaving for his first restaurant shift. I wished him luck and laid down for a while longer. But eventually I got up and got myself ready for the day. I felt bad about my hair and face and clothes all day today. Which sucks a lot because I love this dress. But I was cold so I had a sweater on and my favorite sweater is in the wash and none of my others were making me feel very nice. It wasnt a fun time but I did my best to make myself not so sad about it.
I did enjoy my morning. I had a really nice breakfast. I mixed in some chipolte leftovers into my eggs. And just enjoyed some time to myself. I feel like some of the issue is I just really like being alone. And lately I have not had that at all. Like I love James so much, and having Jess here was great, and the multiple nights a week of DND can be fun. But I feel like I havent had much long term alone recovery time. And its wearing on me really hard. I also just feel like I have to keep explaining myself about why I just want to be alone and everyone is like yes! Totally understandable! But then I feel so guilty that I dont actually relax in the alone time Im given.
So having 3 or 4 hours to myself was nice. And so I decided I would take a nice drive out through the tree lined roads and get a lunch. It was a beautiful day and I felt good. More at peace. I got five guys,  which wasnt great. It upset my whole thing. Like I havent enjoyed the fried foods I have been getting now that Im doing better with my diet. But that doesnt curb the cravings, it just makes me feel bad when it tastes like ash in my mouth.
But it was alright. I got to the school and soon Marcus was there. I brought my scooter and my nice long board to play with with the kids. I spent my set up time getting the board ready and reinforcing the honey combs the kids started making yesterday. But then we got told it was heart market today! The food bank was here. So me and Marcus went to that and got corn and potatoes and peanutbutter and jelly. I also got some apples and oranges.  Excellent. Love heart market.
And the kids were pretty good today. Damien had better luck on the long board. And I had fun playing around with them. I wish I had more places I could use it here but its to hilly. Maybe this summer when me and Jess go stay at the beach. Well see. I would enjoy that but not near all the traffic here!
It was a pretty good day. But I was starting to lose energy. I was glad to go home. I felt sort of weird. Cairo, one of the new teachers this year,  brought me coconut rice which was so nice of her.  She is incredibly cool and it smelled so nice. But my stomach felt weird from the five guys so I am saving that rice for tomorrow.
Driving home was stressful because an alarm was going off in the car and I didnt know what was happening and it scared me real bad. But it turned out it was the groceries on the front seat. The car thought a person was unbuckled. Incredible. Terrifying alarms.
When I got back here James gave me hugs but then quickly went out to get a few things from the store. I started not feeling good more and more and when he was back I was really upset and eventually I fell asleep on the couch from being sad.
I woke up and was alright enough but not happy. Which is where I am now. Tonight just isnt fun for me. I just dont feel good and its not nice.
I really hope tomorrow I feel better. Its going to be a very long day. I have museum and teacher and a meeting and then aerials! A really long day.
I hope you all have a nice night and that tomorrow is a better day. Goodnight everyone.

A Very Serious Pokemon Theory
A while ago I wrote a 2,406 word essay about Pokémon Live! that I thought no one would read. And then, apparently, a few people actually did read it. I found this incredibly flattering - and have also taken it as a challenge to write something even more niche and completely unnecessary.
I will therefore be attempting to convince you of my theory that Pokemon Live! (the Pokemon live-action stage musical) and the Pokemon Christmas Bash music album actually take place in the same universe - one that is more similar to our own than any other in the franchise. My explanation will include reference to the American military, Jesus, politics, infinite multiverses, and the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. I feel that I should warn for very frequent reference to homophobia, as well as a brief reference to something that could be seen as anti-Semitic. Also, someone will get a Tony Award at the end.
If any of that intrigues, please read on.
The Works In Question
I’m going to briefly explain what Pokemon Live! and Pokemon Christmas Bash are - the initiated can feel free to skip down to the next section if they want.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Live! was a live action Pokemon musical that toured in the US from September 2000 to January 2001. It is best known among Pokemon fans for including a subplot that revealed that Ash’s mother and Giovanni dated, possibly implying that Giovanni is Ash’s father - leading to an incredible showdown between Ash and Giovanni where Giovanni, no joke, taunts Ash (a child) by implying that he slept with Ash’s mother, and then follows that up by telling him that nice guys finish last.
Outside of Pokemon fandom, it is mostly known because the character of James was played by a young Andrew Rannells. Rannells would go on to be a very successful Broadway and television actor. One of the things he’s best known for is originating the role of Elder Price in the musical The Book of Mormon. He has, as of writing, been personally nominated for two Tonys, but won neither. This will be relevant later.
Pokemon Live! can be watched for free on YouTube, albeit in very poor quality. It follows Ash trying to win a ‘Diamond Badge’, which is actually a ruse by Giovanni to train his (~mechanical marrrrrvel~) Mecha Mewtwo. It’s a really fun, bizarre ride, because there’s something weirdly earnest about it - like the creators were genuinely, sincerely trying to make a good musical. They did not succeed. It’s a dumpster fire. But a glorious one.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Christmas Bash is an album released at Christmas 2001. It features 10 Pokemon themed Christmas songs, some of which are covers of existing songs, and others which are entirely original. The singers are all members of the 4Kids anime cast. Most of the songs are hilarious, and it’s obvious that everyone was having fun with the whole thing (contrasting Pokemon Live!, which was apparently absolute hell to work on).
Fun fact, at least one of the songs was written by Eric Stuart, James’s original English voice actor (unless you want to get anal about it, in which case I’m talking about James’s second voice actor, following Ted Lewis, who did all of seven episodes versus Stuart’s hundreds). All in all, there’s not a lot else to say about it (for now). It can all be listened to online, but a physical copy will set you back a hundred dollars or so.
Both Pokemon Live! and Pokemon Christmas Bash are American-made entries into the franchise, and are therefore considered non-canon by most fans. I find this attitude very boring, especially since the Generation 6 games established Pokemon to exist in an infinite multiverse rather than just one fictional universe with one canon. There’s no reason these two can’t exist in their own bizarro canon universe, far away from the rest of the franchise - and I am now going to begin presenting my theory.
The Weirdest Line In Pokemon Live!
Pokemon Live! is filled with strange moments. Mewtwo Ex Machina. Team Rocket on scooters. Brock stopping the entire plot to sing and dance about his polyamorous inclinations towards much older women.
But the strangest (to me) is when James references Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. By name. Seriously, here’s the quote:
Well yeah, but where does [Mecha Mewtwo] stand on campaign finance reform, social security, and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell?
Tumblr media
Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, for the unfamiliar, was America’s policy regarding gay and bisexual individuals serving in the military, instituted in 1994, and repealed in 2011. The policy basically meant that if you wanted to serve, you had to stay in the closet - but also no one could harass or try to out you. In other words - ‘it’s okay that you’re having gay thoughts, so long as you never act upon them’. (Was that an inappropriate time to make a reference? Can’t be more inappropriate than referencing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in a Pokemon musical, surely...)
I talked about the meta-level homophobic implications of this line last time, but here, we’re looking at this from an in-universe perspective. It raises important questions.
This must mean Pokemon Live! takes place in Pokemon America, as opposed to the Pokemon Very-Loosely-Japan that we see in the anime and games. So if there is a Pokemon American military, what other American staples are there Pokemon versions of?
So why is there homophobia in this version of the Pokemon universe? No other Pokemon universe has homophobia (sidenote, is it not a little bit darkly funny that the most homophobic piece of Pokemon media is the musical?). In fact, most other Pokemon universes are kind of progressive, if anything - very equal opportunity regardless of race, gender, nation regionality.
Pokemon Christmas Bash has us covered.
Nobody Don’t Like Christmas
Everything we need to know comes from the fourth song on this album - ‘Nobody Don’t Like Christmas’.
This song is sung entirely by Meowth, and well. Look. Maddie Blaustein was a very talented voice actress. Perhaps she was also a good singer when not doing the Meowth voice, I don’t know.
But Meowth should not sing. Singing and Meowth do not go together. No one should have heard that voice and thought ‘let’s give that character a song’. It happened in the anime as well, and it’s the worst part of an otherwise great episode.
Tumblr media
If you can look past the grating vocals, though, this song is incredible. The whole thing is a three minute diss track for every non-Christmas holiday, going everywhere from shaming the dateless on Valentine’s Day, to pointing out that Thanksgiving isn’t all that fun for the turkeys, to just straight up declaring St. Patrick’s Day to be dull.
But there are three important lines here to consider.
The first is my personal favourite line in the whole song.
The Fourth of July / Can be a real drag / If you can’t get no one to salute your flag
Firstly, I love that Meowth is offering the warning that patriotism can only go so far and that eventually citizens’ blind loyalty to country will evaporate if given sufficient reason, leaving celebration of said country hollow and meaningless. A bold choice for Christmas 2001. Not to mention a necessary message for today.
More importantly though, this suggests that these songs might be being sung by specifically American versions of the main cast. The Fourth of July is a holiday only an American would reference in a song like this, as no other country celebrates it - it definitely wouldn’t come up if they were, say, British, for example (in that case, would probably mention Guy Fawkes Night instead). Even more unlikely if they’re Japanese.
However - it’s worth remembering that Meowth is actually canonically American (he is from Hollywood), meaning it isn’t unreasonable for him to make this reference. This is where line number two comes into play.
Memorial Day is a day to forget!
That’s right, everyone.
Meowth hates the troops.
It’s true. Why else would he dismiss this holiday?
But why does Meowth hate the troops?
We return to Pokemon Live! for answers.
Pokemon and the American Military
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, these are not the only franchise entries that mention the American military. Gym Leader Lt. Surge was explicitly described to be an American soldier in the early games (also fun but not really relevant fact, his anime counterpart shares his English voice actress with Meowth - if him having a voice actress seems odd, the explanation is that Blaustein was a trans woman, and so mostly played male roles as they suited her voice better).
Real world locations have been gradually phased out as the franchise has continued, and later games implied that he is now from Unova, the region based on America.
Meowth never seemed to have a problem with Surge in the anime, suggesting that in that version, he does not hate the troops. So what’s different in Christmas Bash?
There’s only one explanation.
Remember, Pokemon Live! establishes the existence of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Also remember - James and Meowth are good friends. And James is gay.
What? That’s always been ambiguous, you say?
Go watch Pokemon Live! and tell me that version of James isn’t gay. Watch one scene with him in it. Go watch it and then tell me that man is straight. Go and do it. You can’t. Pokemon Live! James is gay as Christmas.
Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is a policy that discriminates against gay people. James may not be a soldier, but it still does reflect social attitudes towards discrimination, and so is something he would likely oppose on general principle. And as James’s friend, Meowth would likely do the same.
Tumblr media
Meowth hates the troops because he is an ally.
And so we have our definitive connection. This also confirms that we are in America in both entries.
Probably Blasphemy
So what’s the third important line then?
Who wants to go through all that Yom Kippuren?
A reference to Yom Kippur. This is a Jewish holiday that I do not feel equipped to explain, due to my definitely not being Jewish, but I understand it to be extremely important in the Jewish faith.
Essentially saying that it’s too tedious in a song about how great Christmas is doesn’t seem like a great look, 4Kids, just saying. I doubt it was done maliciously but like... still.
However, this confirmation of the existence of Judaism confirms something much bigger - the existence of religion. Another American staple!
Tumblr media
Up until now, this has been ambiguous. Sure, we’ve been referencing Christmas all this time, but there have been no references to Christ, so we could assume that Christmas is a secular holiday with a weird name. It’s already somewhat secular in the real world - my family couldn’t get less religious and we celebrate it. But if there is Judaism, it is totally reasonable to assume there is Christianity. And that opens a whole floodgate.
So firstly, this finally gives us an explanation for where Pokemon Don’t Ask Don’t Tell probably came from! After all, which religion is most associated with homophobia in real-world America? (No hate towards non-homophobic Christians, just for the record, but like... this is a problem, to put it mildly). So this further solidifies the connection, putting them in the same universe.
Plus, the song ends with Meowth stating that he actually hates Christmas! So Meowth is again being an ally - he’s just, like, the kind that takes it really, really far and maybe needs to chill just a little?
Secondly, this makes a certain line from another song on Pokemon Christmas Bash even funnier, where Brock replaces the beginning of the hymn Joy To The World with:
Nurse Joy is a girl / She sure is fun / But I like Jenny too!
Because this means that covering that song with those lyrics isn’t just kind of inappropriate out-of-universe, it’s also inappropriate in-universe!
But what’s really messing with me is the hundreds of new questions Pokemon Christianity raises. How do they reconcile Arceus with God? Is God in this universe a metal goat, or do they coexist? Was there Pokemon Jesus? I’m not sure I’m okay with Pokemon Jesus. If there is Pokemon Jesus, did Pokemon help with the crucifixion (the Timburr line seem like they’d have been helpful)? Or was Jesus like, a baby Arceus, and therefore probably quite difficult to crucify? Is there Pokemon Heaven? Is there Pokemon Hell? How do the Pokemon Christians feel about Mr. Mime, who is clearly an insult to God? What is a Pokemon church service like? Are there different sects of Pokemon Christianity? Were there Pokemon religious wars? Are there Pokemon Catholics? Pokemon Protestants? Pokemormons???
Tumblr media
I don’t like this.
And here’s another question.
Remember how I mentioned how Andrew Rannells played James? And how he also originated Elder Price in Book of Mormon?
Well. Here’s the thing.
Pokemormons are a very real possibility. If there is Christianity, and also America, then it wouldn’t be unlikely for them to exist in this universe.
However, we have determined that this is one universe, and therefore, James and Andrew Rannells cannot coexist. Only James exists in this universe.
So who first played Elder Price in The Book of Pokemormon?
Okay, So, Full Disclosure, This Is Basically Just My Fanfiction Now, But the Sunk Cost Fallacy Says You’ll Probably Stick Around Since You’ve Already Read Over 2,000 Words Of This Nonsense By This Point, and I’m Going to Take Advantage of That
I think it was James.
I think James went on to start a Broadway career. I think he was in an unlicensed Karate Kid musical, and was Tall in Jersey Boys, and then wound up as Elder Price. I think he did a great job. I think he got nominated for a Tony when award season came round, along with lots of other people involved with The Book of Pokemormon.
But he didn’t win it. Norbert Leo Butz won it for Catch Me If You Can (I had to look that up, was planning on changing it to a Pokemon-joke title - but what do you know, it already has one. Serendipity!).
James no longer has a Broadway career. But he does have a Tony.
He stole it.
Because here’s the thing - Team Rocket are actually pretty good at crime when Ash and Co. aren’t around. Remember that one time they stole an entire stadium?
Tumblr media
They could have literally stolen the whole show, but instead they just stole one thing - that Tony Award. And so James now has an award for Best Actor in a Musical, as well as the unofficial award for Most Extra Thing Ever Done At The Tonys.
James disappears, but his legacy remains. In this universe, all Elder Prices have lavender hair - fans reject any Price who tries to avoid this.
Meanwhile, Jessie, James and Meowth sail off into the sunset in their balloon. James is happy. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell will be repealed soon. He will have a chat with Meowth about overzealous allyship, though he appreciates it all the same. He smiles at his friend Jessie and takes her hand. Christmas is a long way off, but he can’t help but be excited all of a sudden. He’ll spend it with his family - Jessie, Meowth, and now, his stolen Tony Award.
In the meantime, they’ll do what they love best.
Be gay and do crime.
Tumblr media
What Have We Learnt?
This is the most homophobic Pokemon universe we know of
It’s also a universe where everything is set in America
Meowth is surprisingly politically aware
Meowth hates the troops
There was a Pokemon Jesus
4Kids maybe should have hired some sensitivity readers
James from Pokemon possesses more Tony Awards than Andrew Rannells
I have way too much free time
Anyway, this was 2,698 words long and a terrible use of literally everyone’s time. It is rambly and extremely self-indulgent and goes off on countless tangents and you could probably poke like ten holes in it without trying. Please don’t take any of this seriously. It’s now 4 AM. Thank you and goodnight.

Congrats To The Grammys For Finally Getting Their Rock & Metal Category Figured Out
Tumblr media
Following a pretty up-and-down rollercoaster ride the past few years, the Recording Academy has seemingly gotten their stuff together when it comes to their rock and metal categories.
After dealing with an embarrassing year last year where Avenged Sevenfold publically called out the prestigious institution for their lack of support to the metal community, apparently, someone at the Academy was paying attention as this year’s nominees might be one of their best in quite some time.
For Best Metal Performance, the Grammys see a lot of new faces including Between The Buried And Me, Deafheaven, High On Fire and Trivium as well as scene staples Underoath (Underoath were previously nominated back in 2006 for Best Short Form Music Video).
As for Best Rock Performance, previous nominees like Arctic Monkeys, Cris Cornell (rest in peace) and Halestorm are accompanied by the likes of Greta Van Fleet and, surprisingly and well-deserved, FEVER 333.
Another fantastic nomination comes in the Best Rock Song category. Sandwiched between well-known household names like Ghost, Twenty One Pilots, and St. Vincent is Bring Me The Horizon and, for the second time, Greta Van Fleet.
All in all, as much as we bash on award shows for their lack of support towards our hard rock and metal community, this year the Grammys got it right. Were there other artists that deserved a nomination? Of course there were. But considering how things have been in the past (Leonard Cohen Best Rock Performance 2018, Beyonce Best Rock Performance nominee 2017, Tenacious D Best Metal Performance 2015, etc.), we’ll take it.
To check out the full list of nominees to prepare you for the 61st annual Grammy Awards which will take place on Sunday, February 10th, be sure to look below.

Remembering New York City architecture of my youth

Moynihan Train Hall New York City
In the age of the coronavirus, remembering the New York City architecture of my youth
Joel Solkoff’s Column Vol. VII, Number 3.
Thursday May 6, 2021.Rural Williamsport, Pennsylvania, US, population 28,186. {New York City’s population 8.4 million. Distance between them 192 miles}
Today’s column describes a one-day trip I took took on a battery-powered wheelchair on Tuesday February 16th from a nursing home in the New York City Borough of Queens where– the day before– I received the second dose of the Pfizer vacinne to a cab to Manhattan’s glorious new Moynihan Train Hall. Then, after a lenthy train ride to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capitol city, a one hour and 20 minute automobile ride to home. To Williamsport, my home. Now the new U.S. office of e-architect.com
US Office e-architect – 800 West Fourth Street Williamsport Pennsylvania 17701 Phone 570-772-4909 or 272-230-5805 [email protected] photo by Joel Solkoff
On the surface, there might not seem to be a parallel between a huge new train station in the largest city in the US and a luxury hotel in a little town in north central Pennsylvania. But for 1863 and the richest man in the world Peter Herdic.
Peter Herdic built a $250 thousand luxury hotel where e-architect now has our US office. The $250 thousand Herdic spent is astonishing in current dollars. Williamsport architect Anthony Visco Jr. who helped save the Herdic luxury hotel from extinction in the 1990s told me “This was a time when a single family home cost $500.”
In 1863, the unwritten rule when building a luxury hotel in the middle of nowhere designed to attract rich Edith Wharton-style rich folks from New York City is to have a train station in your back yard. That is what Herdic did.
Herdic arranged for the Pennsylvania Railroad to construct an elegant train station next to the five acre hotel and sculptured grounds. The rich flocked here from New York City in a gloroius ride on their private elegant railroad cars.
e-architect’s office is now on the ground floor where large urns supplied railroad workers with coffee. From the window, I see Anthony Visco Jr.’s design for a Victorian train station complex now an historical landmark. The Peter Herdic Transportation Museum. Behind the station is a railroad car used by one of the 19th Century rich.
Because of the US’s post World War II assault on passenger train service begun in the 1950s and 1960s by autombile advocates, Williamsport no longer has passenger service. This railroad car sits outside our window going nowhere.

New York City’s 1963 shameful attack on train service
In the 1960s and 1970s, the powerful New York City urban planner Robert Moses played a significant role in creating a destructive automobiles at any price society which we find ourselves in today at our peril. Robert Caro, the Pultizer Prize historian known best for his landmark series on President Lyndon Baines Johnson wrote a biography of Robert Moses. Wikipedia: “After working for many years as a reporter, Caro wrote The Power Broker(1974), a biography of New York urban planner Robert Moses, which was chosen by the Modern Library as one of the hundred greatest nonfiction books of the twentieth century.”
In 1963 as part of an especially shameful act, the New York powers that be began the complete demolition of McKim Mead & White’s astonishingly beautiful 1914 train station shown here:
1914 New York City Penn Station building interior: McKim Mead &White’s much admired 1914 New York City Penn Station. Photo courtesy McKim Mead & White Collection New York Historical Society
The New York Historical Society observed, “Unfortunately, the Pennsylvania Railroad optioned the air rights for the station in the 1950s, which meant the above ground portions of the structure would be demolished to make room for an office and sports complex. Many New Yorkers and architecture fans were outraged, but in 1963 the building was demolished.”
In October of 1963, the New York Times published the following:
“Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves. Even when we had Penn Station, we couldn’t afford to keep it clean. We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.”
My disability perspective
I am a paraplegic. During the past 25 years, I have gotten around on a battery-powered wheelchair. A scooter. In future columns I will be describing in detail how the scooter (and indeed the mobility device class) has become a critical architectural tool. It would be best when designing for the disabled, for the the architect to ride around in a scooter.
++++
The difference bertween great architecture and appreicating it in an excellent photograph ilike this one is hard to define. Define magic. If you want magic, nothing can delight like visiting in person as I did this beautifully designed architectural achievement. This waiting room had been the location of the automatic mail sorting machines for what was then the City’s postal headquarters. Turns out that back in 1982, when I was speechwriter to President Ronald Reagan’s excellent Postmaster General Preston Robert Tisch that I visited the sorting machines here. That was before mail volume dropped dramatically and the Farley Post Office provided New York with the opportunity, as the Moynihan Train Hall has done, to make up for the sin of demolishing the McKim Mead & White Penn Station. New York City’s new train station is wonderful
Check you have proof you were vaccinated for the coronavirus, book a flight to LaGuardia ( if you are lucky; Kennedy if not). Both airports are in the Borough of Queens (a too often neglected New York City borough which architects might bnefit from a visit).
Take a cab across Queens to the Moynihan Train Hall, the largest train station in the Western Hemisphere, located in mid-town Manhattan between Eighth and Ninth Avenues; 31st and 33rd Streets. Down the street is the Empire State Building, now beautifully restored by Frank Prial, Jr. at Beyer Blinder Belle. In the 1950s my father had a shabby office at the decaying Empire State Building.
The Moynihan Train Hall is located in this building the James A. Farley Post Office. Farley was President Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR) Postmaster General back in the Depression when it was an extremely powerful position. Wikipedia: “The James A. Farley Building is a mixed-use structure [in addition to the Moynihan Train Hall the building includes what is now a very reduced-size post office] in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, which formerly served as the city’s main United States Postal Service (USPS) branch. Designed by McKim, Mead & White in the Beaux-Arts style, the structure was built between 1911 and 1914, with an annex constructed between 1932 and 1935. The Farley Building…faces Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden to the east.”
Photo courtesy Wikipedia A. Farley Building – Wikipedia
Naming a glorious McKim, Mead & White Beaux Art gem after Farley appropriately honors both the architecture firm and Farley. Now the building is appropriately renamed after one of the most intriguing and important political figures in the post World War II US. More on Moynihan and architecture in future columns.
Moynihan was extremely friendly to architects. When he worked as a political appointee in President John Kennedy’s administration, Moynihan convinced President Kennedy to sign an executive order to give non-traditional architects (I.e.you my readers) the ability to design to end too often drab federal office buildings
Wikipedia (with thanks for the photo): “Daniel Patrick “Pat” Moynihan (March 16, 1927 – March 26, 2003) was an American politician, sociologist, and diplomat. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented New York in the United States Senate and served as an adviser to Republican U.S. President Richard Nixon.”
Amtrak, the US’s provider of passenger train service, writes about Moynihan being the visionary who 25 years ago suggested that this be done. After Moynihan’s death, the late senator’s fascinating daughter Maura worked tirelessly to make her father’s vision real. One architect in a position to know asserted Maura’s contribution to the hall was critical.
”Welcome to Moynihan Train Hall. Amtrak and LIRR [the Long Island Rail Road] have a new home in New York City. A visionary project – a generation in the making – championed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Moynihan Train Hall is the city’s newest grand civic icon. The $1.6 billion project transforms the 100+ year-old James A. Farley Post Office Building into a modern, world-class transit hub – an idea first proposed by the late United States Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan more than a quarter-century ago.”
++++
My visit to the Moynihan Train Hall returned me to the neighborhood I have known since I was three years old
One of my earliest memories is seeing at age three the McKim Mead & White 1914 Penn Station in the same location as the architectural abomination that is the 1963 Penn Station today. [Curiously, Penn Station, across the street from Moynihan Train Hall continues—as has been the case since the 1960s—to provide access to trains accessible only underground. Penn Station has no waiting room where passengers can see the light of day. Wheel chair access is dreadful. Penn Station should be shut down.]
In 1950 my mother took me to Florida, then a divorce capital, by train. I wanted to live with my father, not my mother. My memory, reinforced by summer train rides from Miami to see Dad in wonderful New York–a joy to visit in the 1950s and early 1960s–,-is of the station waiting room and the view of beautiful light from the City outside.
The Moynihan Train Hall re-captures that memory. This is the photograph I took of the Moynihan waiting room on February 16th after arriving directly by cab from the Regal Heights Nursing Home in Queens where I was a patient for three weeks:
Used a battery powered wheelchair to visit the Moynihan Train Hall
As a 73 year old paraplegic for 25 years, I have been able to get from here to there and back using a battery powered wheelchair (scooter). My scooter has a 20 plus mile range before a charge is required. This means I can go– or so it seems– nearly anywhere on a single charge. During my six weeks in New York first at Memorial Sloan Kettring Center (which should have but doesn’t bathrooms accessible to the disabled) and the nursing home, I used the Amigo Travel Scooter (built in Michigan) for locomotion.
Your columnist at the Regal Heights Nursing Home in Queens on the day that I was released to a cab that took me to The Moynihan Train Hall. Photo by a member of the nursing home staff who gave me permission to use.
This is what the capsible scooter looked like when I drove it from nursing home to cab.
Photo by Frank Rasole, Jr., my excellent health aide and assistant
This is what the collapsed scooter looked like when the taxi driver arrived at the Moynihan Train Hall and removed it from his trunk
This is the inaccessible entrance at one end of the Moynihan Train Hall I feared. Beautiful isn’t it?
This is the excellent grand wheelchair friendly entrance at the othher end of the Moynihan Train Hall I never dreamed possible
Once again this is the entrance from the taxi to the train station—riding upon a network of hidden ramps that made it possible for me to ride directly from the cab to the waiting room of Moynihan Train Hall.

Global architects note: Infrastructure reform will help your bottom line
Infrastructure reform, after decades of neglect, is likely to take place and provide architects with commissions. President Biden’s bill would cost $2.2 trillion. The President’s approach expands the definition of infrastructure to include, for example, $300 billion for public housing and the necessity to upgrade housing so it is disability friendly.
The Republican version would narrow the definition of infrastructure to roads, trains, planes and wi/fi at a cost of $900 billion. My member of Congress Republican Rep.Fred Keller is a sponsor.
Whichever bill passes, Williamsport in isolated Lycoming County, the physically largest county in the state, requires passenger train service. As with so much of the country train service would open up our community to economic expansion. Here in a town with a large percntage of low income elderly. it would provide us with access to health care still badly needed to control the pandemic.
Sounding often like an urban planner, here is Secretary of Transportation Peter Buttigieg who has become the Administration’s leader for its expanded infrastructue plan:

DealBook: ‘This Airplane Is Designed by Clowns’
Tumblr media
Good morning. The Labor Department’s job report for December will be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern — tell us your predictions. (Was this email forwarded to you? Sign up here.)
Boeing takes heat for embarrassing internal messages
The airplane maker released more than 100 pages of internal messages to Congress yesterday, many of which showed employees mocking federal rules and joking about flaws in the 737 Max. It wasn’t pretty. Some of the messages:• “Would you put your family on a Max simulator trained aircraft? I wouldn’t,” one employee said to a colleague in an exchange from 2018, before the first of two deadly 737 Max crashes.• “This airplane is designed by clowns, who are in turn supervised by monkeys,” an employee wrote in an exchange from 2017.• One employee, upon learning that pilots of an earlier 737 model didn’t need flight simulator training for a 737 Max, wrote, “You can be away from an NG for 30 years and still be able to jump into a MAX? LOVE IT!!”“We regret the content of these communications,” Boeing said in a statement, adding that it was apologizing “to the F.A.A., Congress, our airline customers and to the flying public for them.”The revelations aren’t likely to help get the 737 Max flying again anytime soon. Though the Federal Aviation Administration said that the messages didn’t reveal any new safety risks, Boeing will almost certainly face more scrutiny from Congress.More: American and allied officials now believe the 737-800 plane that crashed in Iran on Wednesday was shot down by Iranian forces, probably in error. ____________________________Today’s DealBook Briefing was written by Andrew Ross Sorkin in New York and Michael J. de la Merced in London.____________________________
What CES 2020 tells us about the future
The huge electronics expo in Las Vegas ends today, after hundreds of tech companies and gadget makers unveiled their latest offerings. Many of those will probably flop, but what’s clear is that our lives will become a lot more connected, Brian Chen of the NYT writes.• “Your next car will probably connect to the internet. So will your TV and doorknobs. One day, you may even adopt a robot companion capable of analyzing its environment and reacting to your actions in real time.”• Google and Amazon highlighted the huge growth of their virtual personal assistants, with an Amazon executive saying consumers interact with its Alexa service “billions of times a week.”• Mr. Chen thinks that auto safety technology, like features that monitor drivers’ blind spots, may be the most practical thing to emerge from this year’s expo.
The streaming wars are flooding us with TV
The television industry aired a record number of scripted shows in the U.S. last year, John Koblin of the NYT writes. That’s a lot of programming — and expect that number to keep growing.Roughly 532 shows were broadcast, according to research from the cable network FX. That’s 52 percent more than in 2013, the year that the first season of “House of Cards” debuted on Netflix. (Include reality shows and daytime programming, and the number swells to more than 1,000.)It’s all because of the rise of streaming services. Netflix alone spent $15 billion on original programming last year, while offerings from Apple and Disney introduced yet more shows. HBO and NBC will add to the race when they debut their services this year.Is that a bad thing? John Landgraf, the head of FX (which is owned by Disney), thinks so:• TV programming will become more expensive. (Disney’s “The Mandalorian” cost about $100 million to make, while Apple reportedly expects to spend $150 million per season on “The Morning Show.”)• But most programs probably won’t get enough viewers to be considered successful.“The danger of the internet is that everything becomes junk food,” Mr. Landgraf said.More: Password sharing cost streaming companies about $9.1 billion last year, according to data from the research firm Parks Associates.
Ominous signs in the stock markets’ new highs
The S&P 500 hit a record yesterday. Market conditions look great. But there could be reason to worry, James Mackintosh of the WSJ notes: There’s a lot of red ink on company balance sheets. The S&P closed at 3,274.7, extending the nearly 30 percent rally that it posted last year. Matt Phillips of the NYT credits that winning streak to continuing low interest rates and high consumer confidence. Not even economic concerns like the trade war are frightening investors. “There’s nothing that tells me that we’re at a peak and the market can’t go higher,” Bruce Bittles, the chief investment strategist at Baird, told the NYT.But a lot of companies are running at a loss. Nearly 40 percent of publicly traded American businesses have lost money over the last 12 months, including Tesla and G.E., Mr. Mackintosh of the WSJ writes. That is the highest level since the late 1990s, excluding recessions.Investors should be worried that “their willingness to tolerate losses at companies promising growth has allowed many new businesses to finance losses well beyond what’s justified,” he adds.
What if Harry and Meghan’s royal split were a corporate spinoff?
The announcement by Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, that they plan to step back as senior members of Britain’s royal family has generated tons of headlines. But Jason Karaian of Quartz has fun imagining what the move might have looked like if it were a corporate deal.• “The directors of House of Windsor P.L.C. (formerly House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha A.G.) note recent speculation in the media about a spinoff of its Sussex-based operations. Discussions are at an early stage about the future of the division, which was officially formed in 2018.”• “Traditions are important to the firm but in this fast-changing global economy we acknowledge the need to be nimble. This includes altering our corporate governance when necessary.”• “Greater independence for the group’s Sussex-based operations is in keeping with the approach of other world-leading companies consolidating younger, more speculative units into dedicated divisions.”• “There will be no Q. and A. It has not been a great quarter.”More: How could Harry and Meghan achieve “financial independence?”

2018 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Year in review, part 1
Now that I’ve had a little time to catch my breath and get over a disappointing conclusion to the season, it’s time to pick up the pieces and move forward. However, before I can move forward, we have to tie things up regarding the season. This will be the first in a four-part series, looking at the biggest WPA plays of the season as well as the biggest WPA games of the season. Today, I’ll take you through the 10 plays that registered the largest negative WPA scores of the year.
If you suspected that relievers would be victimized on this list, you’d be right. All 10 of the events were registered by relief pitchers. A total of seven different relievers will account for all 10 of the events. Without further ado, let’s jump into it.
#10: Brandon Morrow - June 6 (-.348)
On June 6, the Cubs were at home against the Phillies. The pitching matchup featured Jose Quintana against Aaron Nola. If you followed this feature this year, you know that the Cubs had an amazing record in games started by the elite pitchers of the National League. Anthony Rizzo started the scoring with a second inning home run. Willson Contreras and Javier Baez added an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the fourth as the Cubs built a 3-0 lead. Steve Cishek allowed a three-run home-run to Aaron Altherr with two outs in the sixth inning (-.307) after relieving Quintana with two outs and two on.
The score remained tied until the ninth inning when Brandon Morrow was summoned. Brandon allowed a single to Altherr. That brought Dylan Cozens to the plate and he hit a two run homer (-.341).
This won’t be the last time this week that you see this game talked about as this was the Jason Heyward game. The Cubs would walk this one off 7-5.
#9: Justin Wilson - September 8 (-.370)
This one was a game played in Washington. The pitchers were Cole Hamels and Jefry Rodriguez. Victor Caratini hit a grand slam in this one in the second inning to open the scoring. The Nationals would score one in the fourth and two in the sixth off of Hamels to cut the lead to 4-3. Kris Bryant added an RBI double in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Steve Cishek would strike out the first batter he faced but he then allowed a single and a double to cut the lead to just 5-4. At that point Joe Maddon summoned Justin Wilson to face Bryce Harper. Bryce Harper slugged a two run homer to give the Nationals a 6-5 lead. That would be the final score.
#8: James Norwood - July 11 (-.394)
The Cubs were in San Francisco for this one. Johnny Cueto faced off with Mike Montgomery. The Giants sent eight men to plate in the first inning and scored four runs. Jason Heyward homered in the third to cut the deficit to 4-1. Kris Bryant homered in the fifth with Heyward along for the ride to make it 4-3. Javier Baez homered in the seventh to tie the score.
The score would remain tied until the 13th inning. James Norwood got a few cups of coffee with the Cubs in 2018 and in this one he made his major league debut. James pitched a scoreless 12th then retired the first two batters he faced in the 13th. He just couldn’t get the last out. A Brandon Belt walk, an Andrew McCutchen single and a Buster Posey single walked it off for the Giants. That’s quite a trio to face in your major league debut.
#7: Brandon Morrow - March 30 (-.396)
In the season opening series in Florida, there would be a few significant WPA-related happenings. This game saw Kyle Hendricks and Caleb Smith match-up in what looked like a mismatch on paper. Kris Bryant opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo homer. Ex-Cub Starlin Castro would get the run right back with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. That 1-1 score would remain unchanged until the 17th inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Eddie Butler, who had entered the game with two outs in the 10th inning, retired the first two batters of the inning. 21 outs recorded, a full seven inning relief stint. Eddie has 39 career starts. The longest outing of his career was this relief outing. With two outs, he allowed back to back singles and Joe Maddon brought Morrow into the game to make his Cub debut. It was a short one as he allowed an RBI single to the first batter he faced.
#6: Steve Cishek - August 31 (-.423)
This is another Cubs/Phillies game. This time in Philadelphia. Nick Pivetta started for the Phillies and Jose Quintana for the Cubs. Javier Baez opened the scoring in the fifth with a solo homer. The Phillies got the run back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single.
The theme of low-scoring extra-inning games continues. It was 1-1 to the 10th inning. Cishek had retired the final batter of the ninth inning and then went back out for the 10th. He retired the first batter but then allowed a walk-off homer.
#5: Brandon Kintzler - August 19 (-.467).
The Cubs were in Pittsburgh for this one. Yet another Jose Quintana start as he squared off with Jameson Taillon. Kyle Schwarber opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second. (Sad that without looking, I remember exactly how this game went). In the sixth inning, Gregory Polanco had an RBI double to tie the game 1-1.
The score would remain tied until the 11th (I did say this was a theme). Brandon Kintzler pitched the 11th and he retired the first two batters he faced, but the third, Adam Frazier hit a walk-off home-run in this 2-1 Pirates victory.
#4: Randy Rosario - June 21 (-.468)
This one was a Cubs-Reds game in Cincinnati. Matt Harvey started for the Reds against Kyle Hendricks. Javy Baez opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-run double. The Reds opened the sixth inning with a Billy Hamilton walk, but then Hendricks got a strike out and fly out. That’s when the wheels began falling off. Joey Votto walked, Scooter Gennett singled to load the bases and Eugenio Suarez drew the bases loaded walk for the first Reds run of the game.
That’s when Joe Maddon went to the pen. Randy Rosario faced Jesse Winker with the bases loaded and two outs. The result? A grand slam. Rosario would allow three more singles and another run before finally getting the third out. The Reds won the game 6-2 with each team scoring all of their runs in one inning.
#3: Brandon Morrow - May 5 (-.505)
For this one, we have a Cubs-Cardinals game in St. Louis. Tyler Chatwood was still in the Cubs rotation for this one and he faced Luke Weaver. The Cubs put four runs on the board in the second inning without a home run being involved. There were fives singles however. The Cardinals responded with four runs of their own in the fourth. Their rally involved a walk, a hit by pitch, an error and a double. The Cubs added solo homers by Javier Baez in the sixth and Anthony Rizzo in the seventh to take back control.
The Cubs took that 6-4 lead to the ninth inning. That set the stage for Brandon Morrow. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a good day for Brandon. He walked the first batter he faced, then recorded a strike out before allowing a single. That set the table for Marcell Ozuna to upstage Morrow. Ozuna hit a two run double to tie the game. An inning later, Kolton Wong would homer with a man on for a walk off 8-6 Cardinals victory.
#2: Justin Wilson - June 19 (-.695)
This one was from the Cubs-Dodgers Wrigley Field series. Tyler Chatwood was once again on the hill for this one and Kenta Maeda was the opposition. Joc Pederson opened the game for the Dodgers with a home run. Kris Bryant gave the Cubs the lead with a two-out bases-loaded double in the second. Anthony Rizzo added to that lead with a two-out RBI-single of his own in the fourth. Yasiel Puig cut the lead to 3-2 with an RBI-double in the sixth.
The score remained 3-2 until the ninth inning when Justin Wilson was handed the ball for a save opportunity. He walked the first batter he faced. Then one out later he allowed a single. He got a strike out and that brought Kyle Farmer to the plate with two outs and runners at first and second. Farmer doubled and Justin Turner came all of the way around from first with the eventual winning run in this 4-3 Dodgers victory.
#1: Luke Farrell - May 6 (-.908)
2018 was a pretty remarkable year for Cubs WPA. They saw a positive WPA moment of .906 and this negative moment at .908. It was a year where if you stopped watching before the final pitch, you may have missed something. You may recall that we already covered the May 5 game. It was a nightmarish trip to St. Louis in early May. In this one, Jon Lester and Michael Wacha matched up. Anthony Rizzo gave the Cubs an early lead with a first inning sacrifice fly. Jedd Gyorko tied the game back up with a solo homer in the second. Kris Bryant lead off the fourth a homer of his own to give the Cubs the lead again. Kolton Wong’s RBI-triple in the sixth tied things at 2-2. It stayed that way until the 14th inning. In the top of the 14th, Javier Baez hit a solo homer (this will not be the last time we talk about this event in this series).
In the bottom of the 14th, Joe Maddon summoned Luke Farrell, who promptly struck out the first two batters he faced. Then with two outs in the 14th, Harrison Bader had an infield hit. That brought Dexter Fowler to the plate. Fowler generally had an abysmal 2018 season marred by injuries and ineffectiveness. But on this day, he experienced neither as he delivered a two-out, two-run, walkoff home run.
Relievers almost never get to be on the positive side of the WPA Play of the Game, but as you see here they are given ample opportunity to be on the wrong end of it. Brandon Morrow was victimized three times, but of course the closer will be put into these situations more than any player on the team. Thus, he was victimized three times in only half a season. Justin Wilson appears twice, one of those was in an attempt to close out a save of his own.
But it isn’t only closers we see here. We see names like Luke Farrell, Brandon Kintzler, Randy Rosario and James Norwood. Five games blown by guys who seemed unlikely to see leverage situations for the Cubs in 2018. I take two things from that. One, no matter how good your bullpen looks on April 1, May 1, June 1 or even July 1, almost all bullpens are in a constant state of flux. The second is that these games highlighted the Cubs offensive woes. Six of the 10 losses were in extra innings. A couple of them were 1-1 games well into extra innings.
For a team that was built initially around offense, this team really struggled in 2018 at pushing a run across the board when it really needed to. Early in the Cubs rebuild, Tim and I used to have conversations about secondary consequences. In those instances, we were usually talking about defense. Bad defense is a fact of life in the minor leagues, but an error or even just a play with a little difficulty that isn’t made can extend an inning for the pitcher. More pitches thrown in a single inning can wear down a pitcher and might be a factor that leads to pitcher injuries. In this instance, I talk about unintended consequence, because some of these long games may have contributed to a Cubs team that once again appeared to run out of gas late in the season. Also, the March 30 game in which Brandon Morrow warmed up on multiple occasions may have contributed to the injuries that ended his season.
Next time, I’ll visit the 10 biggest positive WPA events of the season. That one is sure to leave a better taste in your mouth. As always, thanks for reading.
