Nice to catch up with these beauties today @blackburnmuseum for the structures in ceramics exhibition that opened this weekend. These are the ceramic modular coloumns I made with the amazing @darwenterracotta for the @thefestivalofmaking 2017. Inspired by the influential artist #ninocaruso and the skilled workforce of the Darwen factory ! It’s a really interesting exhibition exploring the role of architectural feaince and how it is produced. Also I’m trying hard not to upstage a Grayson Perry ceramic tile piece from his house of Julie on loan from the @vamuseum also manufactured by Darwen Terracotta. Never get bored of releasing a mold! This is a #slipcast tin of #ortizsardines, the original kindly donated by @kateseaside all the way from Antigua , and is forming the basis of some new work about #migration and #climate . 100 years ago today the Battle of Passchendaele began. To mark this centenary I have been artist in residence @salford.museum and @wcmlibrary . The outcome of this has been the creation of 226 commemorative plates, a plate for each war since the end of #ww1 . The plates go into regular dinner service today in the cafe at Salford Museum and Art Gallery for the full length of the Battle of Passchendaele. The plates were created with the help of over 75 members of the public during a mass participatory workshop and then fired at the massive kilns of @darwenterracotta . In Service by James Bloomfield - 226 Global Conflicts - 67million fatalities. The doors were opened and the first glimpses of the plates told me they were perfect! Phew! Always knew they would be !!😉. They look great as they come out together .... Massive thank you to @darwenterracotta for their expertise and knowledge in helping get these plates into production! This morning the plates have been set on the kiln cars and are ready for firing @darwenterracotta . Feeling apprehensive now as the glaze and bisque have been tested in a controlled electric test kiln and this massive industrial gas kiln is a different beast altogether! We have made adjustments for this and hopefully the combustibles and kiln size wont effect the glaze and underglaze too much! Fingers crossed as this year long project to make 226 #commemorative plates one for each conflict since the end of World War One is now in the lap of the Kiln Gods!!! We will find out on Wednesday morning if it has been a success!!! Here's some in progress shots, it's a three stage process to get an even covering and then touch in any bits of glaze that get damaged. Experimenting with firing times this week, a difference of 40 degrees makes a massive different between the finished colouring of the plates. The one on the right is 1040 degrees and 50 minute soak, the one on the left is 1000 degrees and 30 minutes soak. Each cycle takes 24 hours to complete so need to get this right as I will hopefully be firing around 200 plates in one go @darwenterracotta next Monday ready for my install @salford.museum next week!!
