Today, we are remembering Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968), and reflecting on his teachings for nonviolent and peaceful protest to fight for racial equality and social justice during the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
More than twenty years before the start of the civil rights movement, James Van Der Zee photographed Marcus Garvey marching at a Universal Negro Improvement Association convention in 1924 in Harlem, New York City.
James Van Der Zee was an African-American photographer active during the Harlem Renaissance. He photographed people in his Harlem studio, capturing the pride of those in his own neighborhood and celebrating black culture. Van Der Zee was born on June 29, 1886 in Lenox, Massachusetts before moving to New York around 1909. He worked as a darkroom clerk at a small department store for many years, before opening his own studio in Harlem.

James Van der Zee (1886 - 1983) IV: Kate and Rachel Van der Zee, Lenox, Massachusetts, 1909 Printed in 1974 Gelatin Silverprint, Edition of 75 7 ¼ x 6 ¼ in. ~ Set by a stream in the woods, Kate, Van Der Zee’s wife, stands with their daughter Rachel by her side and a bushel of leaves and flowers on her left arm. Set in his hometown of Lenox, Massachusetts, this intimate Portrait of Van der Zee’s family is punctuated by the vignette style shadows creeping in around the pair. An affect possibly inspired by the death of Emil, Van Der Zee’s one year old son, around the same time. James Van Der Zee was best known for his iconic portraits of the African-American middle-class and his enchanting scenes of daily life in Harlem. He got a job as a darkroom assistant in 1909 and in 1916, he opened his own studio where he took pictures of Harlem’s blossoming middle-class, neighborhood characters, quotidian life, celebrations and the Harlem Renaissance. Van Der Zee’s works climbed to new heights when they were featured in The Metropolitan Museum’s 1969 show Harlem on my Mind. ~ #billhodgesgallery #gallery #nycgallery #artgallery #africanamericanartist #supportminorityartists #supportthearts #artworld #billhodges #billhodgesgallery #africanamerican #africanamericanart #blackartist #blackartists #africanamericanartists #blackexcellence #americanmaster #masterartist #jamesvanderzee #vanderzee #kateandrachel #motherdaughter https://www.instagram.com/p/CEUj8fCFV0s/?igshid=1tptdh9ooqxx6

📷#ArtIsAWeapon #ExhibitClosings Today, December 31, is the last day to visit the "Seeing Harlem" exhibit at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building. Info: ogs.ny.gov/plaza-events-harlem Address: 163 West 125th Street, #Harlem, #NYC 2nd Floor Art Gallery and Community Room Hours: 12pm-7pm. @plazaeventsharlem If you can't see the exhibit in person, make a virtual visit: ⤵️ empirestateplaza.ny.gov/virtual-visit-nys-harlem-art-collection. 'The residential boom of the Great Migration made way for a new collective creativity, ripening a neighborhood for the most unprecedented cultural explosion in American History and solidifying Harlem as an icon of inspiration. To this day, artists pay homage to Harlem with their extraordinary vision, creating undisputed contributions to American Art. From the 1920s through the mid-1970s, the social and historical documentation of the neighborhood became an art in its own right, depicting not only a very personal experience and the evolution of the artistic community, but also the community at large. Still, in a time of rampant racism and inequality, the artists were largely underrepresented and even unseen... From the crafted poses in studio portraiture to candid street photography, New York State’s Harlem Art Collection exemplifies some of the significant eyes and voices that chronicle a community in Seeing Harlem. Artists on view include #AnthonyBarboza, #DawoudBey, #RogerCabán, #AdgerCowans, #RoyDeCarava, #LouisDraper, #JimmieMannas, Ted Pontiflet, George L. Robinson, Ed Sherman, #CoreenSimpson, #JamesVanDerZee, and Shawn Walker." #SeeingHarlem #HarlemHistory #HarlemGirl #BlackHarlemLives @blackharlemlives #Photography #HarlemDocumentarians #TraScapades #BlackGirlArtGeeks (at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building) https://www.instagram.com/trascapades/p/CYJco1jLLR5/?utm_medium=tumblr

1932 Photo by James Van DerZee, laid into "The Picture Taking Man," a biography of the famous Harlem Renaissance photographer. "When the 'Harlem on My Mind' show opened at the Metropolitan Museum in1968, the photographs of James Van DerZee we're a revelation, and not simply because they showed black people of comfort, beauty, and pride, whom few Americans knew anything about. The photographs marked the 'discovery' of a new American master -- a neighborhood photographer who had recorded more than half a century of black history. Moreover, he had made his photographs not to be famous or remembered, but simply to do the best work he could for the people who came into his studio." #photography #AfricanAmerican #blackhistory #harlem #harlemrenaissance #blackandwhite #photographs #jamesvanderzee #vanderzee #biography #photos #cascadebooksellers #americanhistory

In these days of self isolation many of us are staying indoors as much as possible. Amid all the stress and strain, we each look for a way to distract and entertain ourselves to pass the time.
Shown here is a photograph by James Van Der Zee entitled, The Heiress. Shot in Harlem in 1938, we see social distancing during the depression, though most of us have much less space and probably room mates of one type or another. Regardless, we hope you and your community have found a way to stay together and support each other.
We hope to see you soon!
