In conversation with a woman in the neighborhood, she said she grew up in the 60's and noticed the change in culture in Albany. She said the city went from a place rich in culture and diversity to lacking that of African heritage as drugs and crime rose. Kids don't appreciate things like drumming and African Dance now and that were all lost. The children, are the biggest ones missing out as we forget our tradition and practices so we seek answers knowingly or not and allow things like the media and others to tell us what we should value. This I added is usually equated to the all mighty dollar and doesn't always have our best interest in mind. When we were in the park though, I couldn't help but notice EVERYONE old/young black/white were dancing, laughing and doing moves that they saw as appropriate to the music and I couldn't help but think of how they'd respond with these kinds of things being normalized. It really does take a village to raise all of our children and show them where else to look. We can't forget they have so much to teach us too; as we often unlearn how to treat others as our brothers and sisters.
