A fearsome spirit said to dwell on Jangsan Mountain. Beware its false voices, for it is merely the trap it utilizes to draw its prey close.

School's Birthday, Kyung's Birthday, and Hiking.
In the Korean educational system, every school takes their "Foundation Day" off. Basically, the anniversary of the construction of the school. μ„œκ°μ΄ˆλ“±ν•™κ΅'s (Seogam Elementary School's) Foundation Day is March 30, so I went to Beomeosa to celebrate.
Beomeosa (범어사: "Beomeo Temple", pronounced: Boh-moh-sah) is a Buddhist temple in the northern mountains of Busan. It is on κΈˆμ •μ‚° (Geumjeong Mountain), and it is extremely beautiful. The temple is very brightly painted:
And bright colors were everywhere in this temple. On the walk up to the temple itself, there is this walkway that is covered with lanterns:
And also lined with lanterns (that feature a very cute cartoon Buddha):
And there were also some statues, pagodas, and carvings:
Lamps:
And statues of ancient Korean ancestors of Testudo:
And there are also a dozen or so monks who live in the temple or in the area around the temple:
And meet my new friend from Singapore, Sun (aka Mark):
He was at a conference in Busan for some post-graduate studies, and he took a few days off to tour Busan and Seoul while he was in the country. We met on the bus ride up to Beomeosa. And I was very impressed by his English; he spoke with no accent and even understood the odd accidental idiom that I would say.
Since it is a bit boring to go on a long hike alone, we stuck together for the day. There is a hiking trail near Beomeosa that leads to the fortress on the mountain. The path is a bit treacherous. Most of the way up was a rock trail:
There's a path in there somewhere:
But Korean hiking trails like to be very well-paved at very random points. At one point, the rocks stopped, and we found this trail:
And right after that, the trail turned into this:
And we eventually made it to the walls of the fortress. (But we wanted to get to the peak rather than get lost in the fortress. I will go back to the fortress during the spring when the trees look less dead)
And a fountain with spring water was just inside the walls:
And, of course, a random nicely paved area:
And a view of the wall from the top. I am pretty disappointed that it was such a hazy day, so we could barely see the city, and it didn't show up in any of my pictures:
Triumphant pose in the "Adidas" track suit and "New Balance" shoes that I bought in Nampo-dong for a combined 62,000원.
I will talk about knock-off brands later, since this post is already far too long, and I still have two more topics to talk about. And that really deserves a post of its own.
That was the second hike that I went on. The first hike was in Jangsan, on the Eastern end of town. I found a group of people who go on a hike every weekend, so expect a lot more hiking pictures than anything else.
Every hiking trail in Busan is gorgeous. And since there are so many mountains in the city, you're bound to run into a hiking trail wherever you go. It is hard to believe that this is in the middle of a city of 3.5 million people:
The Korean friend (a co-teacher of one of my friends) I met on this trail told me that this is called μ–΅μ„Έ ("awk-sey") and a field of it is an μ–΅μ„Έλ° ("awk-say-bat"), if you ever wanted to know what this was called in Korean:
Views of Haeundae from the top of Jangsan Mountain:
Let me point out again that every Korean apartment building looks exactly the same:
Here is that bridge that I keep posting pictures of because it is famous. I found out the name of it, Gwangan Bridge:
And here is the Korean forest fire prevention representative. Much less intimidating than Smokey the Bear, or even Smacky the Frog:
And a sign telling us that picnics, snipers, and children cause forest fires:
(To be fair, it looks like thatΒ μ–΅μ„Έλ° would burn in about 5 seconds.)
And the hiking trail took us down to Haeundae, and we visited the famous Haeundae Beach. It reminds me a lot of the beach near my brother's and sister-in-law's apartment in LA:
And it is still cold, so there were not 10,000,000 people on the beach:
The school's birthday was March 30, and Kyung's birthday was March 31! So Misook bought a cake for him and I brought in breakfast for the three of us:
And then on April 1, Kyung and I went to go see Misook act in a play. It was in Korean, so I didn't understand more than three words, but I might have gotten the gist of what the play was about based on tone of voice and facial expressions? And I got to go up onstage with the lead actress and lead actor of the play:
