Tottenham Hotspur seem to be doing some very good business this transfer window as they have managed to sign an experienced Premier League midfielder in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as well as a goalkeeper to add some squad depth in Joe Hart. They are also reportedly close to signing Matt Doherty, and Spurs correspondent for Football.London Alasdair Gold believes that some other signings will still be made. Speaking about the possible signing of Matt Doherty as well as other transfers, Gold tweeted:‘It’s not a sexy £100m signing but it’s a smart one and Tottenham proved last season that spending a lot of money didn’t solve their problems. It’s spending money in the right ways that does that. Doherty could prove to be one of the bargains of the window and Spurs aren’t done.’ It’s not a sexy £100m signing but it’s a smart one and Tottenham proved last season that spending a lot of money didn’t solve their problems. It’s spending money in the right ways that does that. Doherty could prove to be one of the bargains of the window and Spurs aren’t done. — Alasdair Gold (@AlasdairGold) August 26, 2020 Clearly the fact that there are supposedly more signings to be made is a big statement of intent from Spurs, showing that Jose Mourinho wants to battle for a top four position next season as they are in the Europa League for the upcoming campaign instead and following them reaching the Champions League final in 2018/19, they will want to return to that competition sooner rather than later. This should excite supporters of the club and now make them wonder who Gold believes could also be signing for the club. 24 year-old Leicester City winger Demarai Gray has been linked, and this could be a good signing for squad depth, with the Premier League winner scoring 13 goals and assisting 17 since joining the Foxes. Defender Milan Skriniar is also reportedly a target, and the experienced Inter Milan defender could be an ideal replacement for Jan Vertonghen, who left the North London side this summer. Another defensive option is Ligue 1 player, Guillermo Maripan, but if Mourinho desperately wants the AS Monaco player, he has some competition to sign him as fellow Premier League side Newcastle United are also monitoring him. It will be interesting to see what unfolds at Spurs in the coming weeks. Spurs fans, what are your thoughts on this news? Comment below! Spurs Survive, Newcastle Finds Belief : Three Talking Points
Tumblr media
Alosh K Jose Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United played out an entertaining match at St. James Park with the away side winning 2-1 thanks to the goals from Jan Vertonghen and Delle Alli. Joselu sandwiched his goal between the two Spurs goal as Newcastle hit the post twice in the second half. Here are the main talking points. 1. Tottenham Survive, But Issues Persists Maurizio Pochettino responded to not getting any players in the transfer window by rolling out all his big guns in their opening match against Newcastle United. Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane and Delle Alli all started the match despite only spending a few days of preseason training and that showed, especially for Kane. With the disastrous transfer window Spurs has had, all of them need to keep fit and firing throughout the season.
Tumblr media
The manner in which Spurs won the game will give Mauricio Pochettino much food for thought. Spurs played relatively good football in the first half, often pressing the Newcastle back line into mistakes. But everything changes in the second half which the Northeast club dominated as the Spurs stars looked visibly tired. Newcastle players were first to most second balls and hit the post twice. As noted in our transfer rankings, an injury crisis is all what Spurs required to undo all progress they achieved under Pochettino. The standoff between Pochettino and Toby Alderweireld will come under spotlight after an indecisive display from Davinson Sanchez. He s good in the air but lacks positioning which was exactly what Joselu exploited for Newcastle's equalizer. Without doubt, this Spurs side will be better off with Alderweireld in the team. But will the Belgian and Pochettino be able to put their differences for the sake of the team? 2. Newcastle Can Take Heart from the Performance Newcastle United was never out of the game and while Rafa Benitez will be relatively happy with the performance, he will be disappointed not to take at least one point from this game. Matt Ritchie looked very good in the attacking third and it was he who bent in that sumptuous cross Joselu scored from. But it was also his mistake that led to the Dele Alli goal as Ritchie decided he is simply not bothered by chasing Alli. Benitez will surely take time to preach his squad that it is the importance of defensive dedication from his attackers.
Tumblr media
Newcastle showed they are no pushovers and arguably deserved a draw. Jonjo Shelvy showed the kind of creativity that led to calls for him to be included in the England squad for the World Cup. Shelvey is a confidence players, but if Benitez succeeds in harnessing his talent, the Englishman the Toon Army will get themselves a cult favorite. Of course, all was not well for Newcastle as Tottenham repeatedly exploited the Magpies back line in the first half. They were troubled by set-pieces which is not normally expected from a team coached by Benitez. More worryingly, DeAndre Yedlin hobbled off with an knee injury. His presence is much needed in both halves and losing him for any time period will be a blow. 3. Spurs Talisman Harry Kane has No Backups In what is fast becoming one of the greatest mysteries in world football, the otherwise prolific- Harry Kane is still to find the back of the net in the eight month of the year in any of his years as a senior professional.
Tumblr media
Harry Kane was not involves much in the game and in fact it was a surprise that he started this game at all after reporting late due the World Cup. Jokes apart, Kane remains extremely vital for Spurs. With Son Heung-min due to jet off tomorrow to join the Asian Games and Pochettino distrusting both Fernando Llorente and Vincent Jansen, any sort of injury to Kane will spell trouble for the North Londoners. The fact that he had to play 90 minutes today without even having a proper preseason behind him shows the paucity of options for Spurs in that area. Much of these issues could have been addressed by Daniel Levy in the transfer window but he chose not to. It is not ideal state of affairs at all. Read the full article

Jose Mourinho has warned that Tottenham are in “big, big trouble” after they slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United. The Lilywhites were beaten by the Blades at Bramall Lane after Harry Kane’s equaliser was controversially ruled out by VAR due to a handball from Lucas Moura during the build-up. Tottenham struggled to break down a defence marshalled by Chris Basham as Kane, who had another goal ruled out at 2-0, added a consolation strike in the closing stages of the second half. Chris Wilder’s side climbed above Spurs into seventh in the Premier League, while Mourinho’s men dropped to ninth, nine points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea. The Portuguese, who has never been one to mince his words, didn’t hold back in the post-match press conference (as per football.london). He said: “I think the way we trained, what we did in training I think we have to be better than we were. We have to create more chances than we did. From what we trained in the past days, I have to admit that at that level, I am disappointed. “Even in the first half, we were very dominant in the long defensive balls. In all these kicks, extremely long, we were very dominant there. Dier, Sissoko, Davinson won every ball in the air, but then we need to win the second ball and be more aggressive there in the transition to attack.” He added: “Clearly if these boys don’t care about results and don’t care about the position we finish at the end of the season we’ll be in big, big trouble for the future. So I hope that they care and fight for the best position in the table for the end of the season.” Mourinho has every right to feel disappointed, as Chelsea and Leicester had dropped points beforehand, and the game presented the perfect opportunity to make up some ground on the top four. Now their Champions League hopes have been all but ended by the Blades just over a year since the club’s famous run to the 2019 final in Madrid. Once again Tottenham’s defensive frailties were laid bare, as Lys Mousset peeled away from Eric Dier to slot home a cool finish for Sheffield United’s second goal. Mourinho has put all his faith in Dier and Davinson Sanchez, who have started the last three games since the Premier League restart, but they didn’t repay his trust on Wednesday. Oli McBurnie outpaced Sanchez, to make matters even worse. Although the manager eventually had enough, as he called upon Jan Vertonghen to replace Ben Davies later on, the damage had already been done. McBurnie added the third goal soon after the veteran came on the pitch, to add insult to injury. In fairness to Mourinho, the Lilywhites have been leaking goals all season even before his arrival, but this was another devastating blow for their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. Meanwhile Japhet Tanganga, who has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise abysmal campaign, is out with a back injury to compound Spurs’ problems further. Tottenham fans, who do you blame for the club’s defensive woes? Let us know in the comments below! "Breaks my heart", "Get out while you can" - 6 ft 2 ace's admission has many Spurs fans talking
One of the major talking points heading into the summer at Tottenham is whether Jan Vertonghen will still be at the club once his contract expires.
Reports in recent weeks had suggested the Belgium international could be set to leave north London on a free transfer, but a recent update from Alasdair Gold suggested that Spurs may be inclined to keep him until this season finally reaches its conclusion.
The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?
World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%
But speaking to Play Sports (via The Independent), Vertonghen himself seemed to open the door to a potential exit. He said: “I want to sign with the right club. It could be Spurs, or another club. It must be a club with ambition. I want to play in Europe as the national team is important for me.”
And after hearing about what the 6 foot 2 central defender had to say, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.
Better be with @SpursOfficial @JanVertonghen has been a amazing player for us over the years.
— Danny (@Dannycon643) April 22, 2020
I won’t ever accept any Jan slander give this man the extension he deserves even if it’s only for a year or two.

— biscuit (@skinner133) April 22, 2020
Jan, thank you a lot for your service mate and good luck at your next club, no disrespect whatsoever
— ManLikeJimmy (@ortner_jan) April 22, 2020
Breaks my heart tbh, love him, but he’s not the player he once was sadly. Will always be a Spurs legend though, has been a fantastic servant over the years.
— Tim Parkes (@ShaolinMunkeh) April 22, 2020
Sadly he’s not at a level we require his legs are gone
— martin ward (@martinward79) April 22, 2020
Some Spurs fans questioned their own club’s ambitions, with one supporter in particular urging Vertonghen to “get out” while he can.
Tottenham dont have any ambition so he won’t sign for us.
— Andy Perry (@andyperry79) April 22, 2020
He’s pretty much wasted the last several years with us. He was a brilliant player and could have won things elsewhere. How he was tricked into signing for us still amazes me. Get out while you can Jan and get some silverware before your career is over. Wish you all the best.
— GD (@gareth1882) April 23, 2020
Spurs definitely not the right club for him, bye
— SkippOurSZN (@OnlyRateGoatFC) April 23, 2020
This promises to be a saga that could go either way.
With the issue of contracts and player registrations being a contentious issue, Vertonghen could quite conceivably spend more time at Spurs than he might have originally anticipated.
Clubs are highly unlikely to let go of first-team players when things are so uncertain, and the campaign hasn’t even finished yet. Vertonghen may have his heart set on an exit, but it may not come as soon as he thinks.
