Greetings from Wakkanai, Japan’s northern most town and the beginning of our Nihon Isshū or Japanbike tour! It also feels like the finale of many weeks and months of preparations to get to this place. Where would we be without all the people who helped us get here?

We want to thank our families for being lovingly inquisitive, excited and ultimately very supportive of our crazy vision of doing nothing but biking and eating across a country for many weeks.

Thank you to our work families at Octo PD and DS4SI who have employed us for years and enabled us to save for this trip and be so encouraging and supportive of our adventure. Thank you Octo for our dynamo hub wheels that can make electricity and power our lights and devices! Thank you Lori, Kenny and Maria and DS4SI and the extended family for the unforgettable send off and bike cover that everyone got to write messages we can take with us and that we already used! Thank you Maria for being a force of positive energy in kicking us off in our packing and purging our apartment with kindness and time to thank and part with things.

Thank you so much to Solomon for being our friend, foodie guide, Risd brother and host in Tokyo as we emerged from the jet lag and depths of exhaustion. We are so excited to be neighbors 🙂

Thank you to Uncle Kazz and Auntie Mika and cousin Kaito for the send off dinner! Thank you for always being available in case of emergencies and supportive!

Fairmount Inn (our house mates in providence)::: Thank you to Lois always for housing us in the week before we left Providence and making yummy breakfast rice bowls and Anther for cookies and loving sustenance. Thank you James does being so chill and helpful as we transitioned out of the apartment and so so helpful with our bike preparations. James works at Legend Bicycle store in Providence and sold me my Surly bike and helped set it up. He also led our 90mile bike&camp ride to Horseneck beach, Massachusetts which was our test overnight bike trip training. Thank you to Bob and Denise, Fairmount Inn parents, for letting us sprawl out on the deck and use it as a bike workshop for a week. And also for such a delicious send off dinner and celebration of our years together at your house. Please give our best to neighbor Billy!

Thank you to Teagan for driving us, all our big bike bags and emotions to Boston airport, it was so meaningful to us! Thank you also for making impromptu breakfast tacos and always helping us.

Thank you Ashley and Teagan for being frantic packers with us that one night and offering your amazing efficient energy help even over pansit noodles, wine and ice cream.

Thank you to Kayla and Miles for hanging out the night before our flight and helping us rig our bicycles into compact configurations and eating dessert while keeping us company.

Matt and Rue and Kix and Atlas for making us an amazing taco dinner the week we left and being so so excited for this adventure with us. So many good questions and conversations.

Thank you to Myles for all the tips, tools, bags!!, energy, encouragement and connecting us with friends who have bike toured in Japan. Thanks to Myles we have learned so much so we also thank Cindy, Charlie, Bridget, Katie, and Aaron for the many emails of bike touring tips and stories! We are here finally!

Thank you Nate for also being our friend, leader, and role model for everything especially biking and having an adventurous spirit.

Thank you Chris, Tory, Éowyn and Ruth for your powerful prayers that resonate strongly today, your supportive and inquisitive and excited energy, pink piggly paint mani-pedis, nourishing meals and building a financial model for this trip with us on a spreadsheet!

Thank you Clif and Arleen for inducting us into your love for long-distance riding and training us on the Tour de Quabbin (65miles/ 105 km)! We carry Charlie in our hearts from Cape to Cape through the mountains, forests and sea sides of Japan and imagine his beaming face in the wind on a sailboat. He is always an inspiration to us. Yeah Go Charlie!

Thank you to our Lodi lake family and friends who came out to send us off in August and who have loved and supported us all these years. In the words of Susan, written on our bike cover that night “A grand mystic folly awaits you. So proud of the spirit you radiate…” We will miss her radiant spirit deeply and feel it on this mystic folly.
