Japanese Black pine cone Taken at a park less than a mile from home. Japanese Black pine is an introduced species planted during WWII to “hide” shoreline defenses from possible Japanese sea invasion. Nope, not kidding. In the past 70 years it has slowly spread inland displacing indigenous pine trees. #nature #tree #japaneseblackpine #sonyphotography #sonya7iii #colorefexpro4 https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Q4LGRDNkU/?igshid=1r3tl5746mtfe

Last week I found the curves in this Japanese Black Pine. I was quite happy with the direction it took. There was however, one element that didn’t feel quite right. The branch growing from the “backside” of the tree filled the space between the main trunk and the lower one on the right in this photo. Many years ago I heard John Naka say to, leave rooms for birds to fly through, when he was speaking about styling a tree. That always stuck with me. A beautifully poetic way to explain his work, it also has a natural feel that I prefer over a mechanical, trim your trees to fit a mathematical golden mean sort of approach.
The branch on this Pine that didn’t feel right not only got in the way of my imagined birds. It was using the “negative space” that I should have been making use of by not using. (How’s that for you, Zen enough? Using by not using).
Anyway, this is a lot of words to say I moved the back branch around to the left side (as seen from this angle), and trimmed away the branch in the front that took a similar position. Now it feels open and free, lots of room for the birds.
Stephen posted a video to Instagram: Japanese Black Pine repotting time lapse. Don’t blink you’ll miss it! It’s really important to get the pot ready before you disturb the root system. #bonsai #bonsaimatsu #japaneseblackpine #bonsairepotting #bonsaifromaustralia https://ift.tt/31cIDQp
