Mt IWATE 2038m The Highest mountain in IWATE prefecture

IWATE prefecture locates in northern Japan.

Mt IWATE from Morioka city which is a capital of IWAT is looked like Solo mountain because it is way higher than the mountains next to each other.

They have several different ways to climb up to the top. I tried one of these gates from UMAGAESHI auto camping ground.

Normal course time Up 4.5 hours Down 3 hours

There are two mountain houses. Both of them are available to stay.

One eight station of this mountain is a pay sleep. The other one is free but it doesn’t have water and electric aside from toilet.

I’ve chosen the free one. When I got there, two old hikers were drinking hot SAKE. They said they are going to do longitudinal.

At the night October on the Mt Iwate is freezing. It was almost 0 degree. But stars are shining all night. Of course, I could see some shooting stars.

Next day, I woke up 4:30 am, had 2 rice balls, and started to climb up to the top to see the sunrise. After 30 mins I got the peak of Mt Iwate. It was crazily windy. My cheek was almost gone.

As for climbing down, I run like trail running and got to the car park after 1 hour. I’ve gotten muscle soreness for a week though.
