Making the Most of a Weekend

In late March of 2018, we vacationed with my in-laws in North Carolina. During this trip Zach was planning on hiking in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. Unfortunately the winter prevailed leaving 3 feet of snow from a blizzard in the Appalachian Mountains in these states, during this time.  Due to personal commitments and weather, Zach did not get a chance to hike until the last weekend of April 2018. I also had an event to coordinate for my business, the Sunday of that weekend in Albany. Since we were already out that way, we agreed that this would be a good opportunity for Zach to hike Saturday (on our way out to Albany) and Monday (on our way back from Albany).

The starting point was on the south side of Dalton, MA. On the way we passed Herman Melville’s house, who wrote Moby Dick. I was surprised to learn that he lived that far west, especially since his story is based off of the sailor’s lives and experiences in New Bedford, MA.

To get to the starting point, I had to drive through a lumber yard to drop Zach off, and he had to cross a set of train tracks to get onto the trail. He would be hiking approximately 7 miles to Gulf Road in Dalton, MA.

I am a creature of habit, and went back to Juice N’ Java to work and finalize details for my events that were going to take place on Sunday and Wednesday of that week. I had 3 hours until pick up time, and I was determined to make use of every second of it.

Driving to this pick up location was easy, and through a town that reminded me of my hometown in Pennsylvania.  One of the cool things about doing this, is that we get to see parts of New England that we would never have known existed. I was there to meet Zach within 10 minutes of him coming off the trail. He changed, and we got in the car to head to Albany.

On Monday, we came back to the same pick-up location so Zach could continue his hike from here. He went 13 miles south and ended in Lee, MA. During this hike he crossed Warner Hill, which provided some good views. I ended up breaking out of my comfort zone and finding a new place called Haven Cafe to hang out in. For a Monday, the place was packed, and my biggest issue was trying to find an outlet to plug in my labtop. I wish I had problems like this all the time. 🙂 The food and beverage were excellent, and before I knew it, I was being summoned to pick Zach up.  I did not anticipate the pick-up point being over 2o miles away from where I was. This pick up point was probably the most difficult I’ve had to deal with so far. I bet you 5 years from now, I’ll be begging for a pick up point like this. But the road was up a mountain, extremely curvy and littered with pot holes. I took it easy with the car, but it was almost 40 minutes by the time I got to Zach.  It took us another 15 minutes to drive out of the state park that was miles of gravel and dirt roads. We got on the highway, and headed home. On this hike, Zach came around a corner and startled a Red Tailed Hawk.  He also came upon a senior citizen who was off the trail pruning weeds from the trees and plants in the area.  The man was wearing a nice pair of brown leather dress shoes, khaki slacks, and a tucked in polo shirt. At this point the closest access point to the trail was 3 miles in either direction. Bizarre, yes, but I’m sure that this isn’t the first odd thing that Zach will come upon.

WIOA Failure

Around 2018, my parents found out about WIOA through the Prince George's branch of the American Job Center and told me about the WIOA program at the Prince Georges County job center. The WIOA stands for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. It’s a law that allows states and counties to support unemployed Americans with federal funds for retraining via a private training center or community college or have paid on-the-job training from local employers working with the American Job Center, with the possibility of being picked up by the company for a full-time role. You can’t pick both options so it really depends on what you need.

Obviously, because I have no savings and my unemployment slowly running out, I had to take the paid on-the-job training. So I called the Job Center and expressed my interested in the WIOA program. And you have to express interest in it because this program is not well-advertised to the unemployed.

But I heard about WIOA from my parents who had the opportunity to get a job via their on-the-job training program but could not because they had health issues. But WIOA is known as the Work Investment and Opportunity Act. The allow allows grants for study for certs or classes or for on-the-job training. I opted for the on-the-job training because I needed the money and two there was the possibility for the company to pick me up.

After I made the appointment, and went to the appointment in the office, the co-ordinator which was a woman explains the entire process.The entire process but the actual process will not start until I fill out several forms. You have to fulfill a checklist of requirements to be approved for the program, then verify the fact that you’re a displaced worker or unemployed. In that form you have to explain why you’re having difficulty seeking work. I’ve explained in full honesty that I have autism spectrum disorder which makes it difficult to gain relationships in order to seek better work, gaining relationships with co-workers is practically the only way to gain employment, and difficulty seeking security clearances because I’ve been the sole provider of my parents for 4 years because they were unemployed.

Then you have do actual research on the job you want via a occupational research assignment. Doing that assignment is very difficult because in most companies you want to interview with, the HR departments are difficult to contact by phone or email. But what I had to do was print out three job openings that had the job title I want, and fill in the required information the best i can.

And, of course, you need to submit your resume.

After you submit the information by email or in person. You have to go to a orientation course that tells you everything about the WIOA, what the Act is, how does it work and the details about the options they provide. It was the same co-ordinator that handled my paperwork. From what I heard from her regarding being placed to a paid on-the-job training position that it takes from 2 weeks to 6 months, but on average it takes three months to be placed in one of those to start work. She knew how dire my situation is since I dropped hints on it.

Finally after the orientation class, you have to take a Prove-IT test. Now for that test, I was able to take the System Administration test, but the Oracle Java exams and SQL exams were very difficult to take because I had no knowledge of them and it was a surprise for me because I did not expect such a test.

All I could do was to guess the answers the best I could in order to complete the remaining exam.

Then finally, another co-ordinator which was another woman gave me a link to the System Administrator job for a local contractor for the Prince Georges county government. The job would be a great fit for me if I was actually hired. Then I encountered the same problems with dealing with third-party IT recruiters, but it’s worse since you’re dealing with the state government since if they screw up, they don’t get easily disciplined or fired unlike the private sector.

I did the same thing as I did to the IT recruiters. I followed up with them by phone every week to make sure I exist and to check up on the hiring process. Often times, I leave a voicemail message and I don’t get a return call back. Often times I had to do a weekly follow up on both co-ordinators. Each one told me that they will update me tomorrow or the next day. When tomorrow or the next day came and I don’t get a phone call back, and I had to be the one calling them back.

Then slowly, I found reasons why it took so long to hear anything back from the person who gave me that job link from the other co-ordinator: The first excuse: She went on vacation. The second excuse was that she got married after she went on vacation. Finally I was told that her office was being moved to a different location. Despite all of this, she could not take 30 minutes of her time following up on voice mail messages in between the times she went on vacation and marriage.

Finally, they admitted months later that the position I have applied to with the company that was supposed to work with the American Job Center with unemployed Americans who signed up with the WIOA was closed. Worse, basically told me that they threw their hands up instead of actually giving me a position that they would have worked with ASAP by telling me to go to a IT recruiter. The same IT recruiters that I contacted a week after I was laid off that months later threw their hands up and told me they actually have nothing for me after wasting 2 hours of time talking to them at their office and doing weekly follow ups over the phone.

Even the Government of the State of Maryland does not value the time or skills of the unemployed. Even if the unemployed person is disabled and has a autism spectrum disorder.

“A lot of the strengths of getting into coding right now are pretty obvious—the world is increasingly computerized, demand for the skills is still on the rise, and the technology changes so fast that even if you’re behind now, you won’t stay behind for long because everyone has to keep learning,” said David Joyner, PhD, executive director of online education and OMSCS for the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and instructor for several courses and programs on edX, such as Computing in Python I: Fundamentals and Procedural Programming.

“We just had a brilliant demonstration of how digital technology helped to overcome economic disruption in many areas. Even though 30 years old, the Web is the winner platform with existing Web technologies in action, making it possible to communicate, buy/sell, learn, etc. So, more than ever, people need to either acquire or keep up Web programming skills. Coding for the Web is easy and very often leads to satisfying and fun experiences. W3Cx MOOCs give the right keys to master the foundational Web languages. With the advent of machine learning, smart things and more, there is an unexplored world of future Web applications and usages to create and play with. As a woman in tech, I especially encourage girls to embrace these Web skillsets!” said W3C Head of Training Marie-Claire Forgue, who developed the W3Cx MOOC program in partnership with edX, where Web developers worldwide can learn front-end Web development techniques using W3C Web standards.

Computational thinking is a valuable cross-discipline skill

“Computational thinking is becoming a critical skill in almost all disciplines. Coding is a good way to train people in computational thinking. Thus, you can see that in many countries and regions, including Hong Kong, we start to teach primary (elementary) and high school students coding and try to equip them with skills in computational thinking,” said Dr. Siu Ming Yiu, a professor in the University of Hong Kong’s computer science department and the lead instructor for the course Blockchain and FinTech: Basics, Applications, and Limitations, part of HKUx’s FinTech Professional Certificate program.

Coding is essential in fields like information technology, cybersecurity, and fintech

“Coding will always be an integral part of the IT profession. Coding has paved the way for the development of large systems and infrastructures and has contributed to technological advances in Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Every system requires software to run and software is developed by coders. Coding skills are relevant in all aspects of IT, from system development to system configuration/implementation and usage,” said Dr. Patrick Appiah-Kubi, program director and associate professor in Cloud Computing Architecture at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC).

“The devastating impact of the global health crisis on virtually every industry has been a wake-up call for business leaders, who realize that they are ill-equipped to address the demands of remote environments and systems that can support their operations. Many executives also realize the cyber insecurity of employees working remotely. This has opened up an opportunity for companies to increase their coding skill force to address some of these challenges,” Appiah-Kubi said.

“Speed kills and good coding speeds up the kill chain. Offensively, coding make attacks and exploits faster and more effective. Defensively, cybersecurity professionals need strong coding skills to keep up with the adversary’s custom coded exploits and to automate their own defenses,” said Dr. John S. Galliano, program director for Cybersecurity Technology at UGMC

“Today, digital financial transformation is being driven to new levels by the COVID-19 pandemic. Going forward, technology will play an ever more central role in the future evolution of finance, with huge opportunities and challenges for people and financial regulators across the world. For me, among the most exciting developments center around central bank digital currencies – CBDCs, such as China’s Digital Yuan project or proposals for a Digital Dollar. These meld money and technology together and will underpin revolutions in global finance going forward,” said Douglas Arner, director of the Asian Institute of International Financial Law at the University of Hong Kong and instructor for HKUx’s Introduction to FinTech course.

“Especially in this age of social distancing, coding is a job you can do from home. Lots of organizations, such as Mozilla, have almost entirely distributed workforces. Just like online education means you no longer have to move to continue your education, coding skills means you may not have to move for a new job,” Joyner said.

Where Should You Start? Learning Python and Building Breadth

Starting with Python

“For beginners, I would suggest Python (or similar scripting languages) to start with. It is an easy language to pick up, highly productive, and also is useful in many practical situations such as data analysis,” Dr. Yiu said.

“I teach and highly suggest that new coders use Python and its associated packages. In my mind, there is no comparison in terms of online documentation, user community, ease-of-learning, and general capabilities of Python. I also suggest data science-focused learners to pick up the R language in parallel as it provides encapsulated libraries that aren’t always available in Python,” said Dr. Clayton Miller, assistant professor for the School of Design and Environment’s Department of Building at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and instructor for the NUS edX course Data Science for Construction, Architecture and Engineering.

The value of becoming a generalist

“The fundamental skill of coding is mastering the logical reasoning and flow of the software and not the coding language that is being used. Novice coders can start with a basic language, such as Python, or Java for an intermediate coder, to develop their skills and go on to learn other programming languages. Knowing multiple languages is beneficial because all cloud-based systems today use multi-language integrations in a single functional system,” said Dr. Appiah-Kubi.

“As with probably any subject, computing gives you the choice of breadth vs. depth. You can go deep and specialize very heavily in one in-demand field, such as data science, web development, or artificial intelligence, or you can go broad and seek to be more of a generalist, dabbling in a little bit of each. Personally, I think it’s prudent to go for the latter: do a little bit of everything. I say that because the beauty of computing is that the field is changing so fast that even if you specialize, you’re going to have to continue learning within that domain to stay current. By going broad, you lay a foundation to go deep wherever you need to whenever you need to, knowing that the materials will likely be available to do so. You want to set yourself up for future learning, and the best way to do that is to lay a broad foundation,” Joyner said.
