Booz Allen Aberdeen: Come for the People. Stay for the Possibilities.

Systems Engineer Vijay Jadav is honest about moving from New Jersey to Aberdeen, Maryland: While the town wasn’t on his radar, luckily Booz Allen was.
Five years later, Vijay is an ambassador for the city—and continually takes advantage of the career potential Booz Allen offers.
Considering a move? Keep reading to see why Booz Allen Aberdeen should be on your radar.
Question: Why did you take the job in Aberdeen?
Answer: The people. A friend and I came down together. I still work with her, as well as with the friend who recruited me. They were people I knew and trusted, so I came to work with them.
Q: Now that you’ve lived here five years, what do you think?
A: I love the trees and all the open green space. There are parks and trails with great hiking and a waterfall nearby. DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia aren’t far, and it’s a great area to raise kids—plus it has really good crab cakes.
Q: How has working at Booz Allen in Aberdeen impacted your career?
A: I’ve become a jack-of-all-trades: I started in testing, then moved to security design, information assurance, system design, and software architecture. You get to prototype a lot here. Some ideas can help the military and your career at the same time.
Q: Can you tell us about a specific project you’ve worked on?
A: I helped develop a great application that solves a small problem but has a massive impact. Basically, if soldiers can’t connect to the main network, the app lets them use their satellite connection to get the information they need about the battlespace. Soldiers win when they know the area—where their guys are and where the enemy is. That’s more powerful than any weapon we could make.
Q: What would you tell someone who’s thinking about working here?
A: I would tell them that every day, I get to create things no one else has. That our work saves lives. And that if you have drive and creativity, you can pursue your vision here.
What vision will you pursue in Aberdeen? Join us, and find out.

The Faces of National Security

Turn on the TV or open your laptop and you’ll see story after story about threats to the national security landscape. As government and commercial sectors rush to meet the challenge, we’re right by their side. At Booz Allen, these threats are personal—because protecting our country against them is our passion and the core of our business.
As Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently said: “The speed of war has changed … [making] the global security environment even more unpredictable, dangerous, and unforgiving,”
Who’s fighting back? The men and women of Booz Allen.
Since our work helping the country prepare for World War II, we’ve been intimately with the missions of our intelligence clients. Our technical and consulting skills, combined with our agility, allows us to work outside traditional intelligence expectations.
Requirements Lead Brianna is the perfect example. She’s working on a complete implementation of an enterprise IT management system designed to centralize management and use of cyber security tools in the cloud. She came to us for opportunity—and found it.
“I love honing my analytical skills and appreciate the exposure to vast cyber opportunities at Booz Allen,” Brianna says.
Kurt, an intelligence operations analyst, is one of the many military veterans on our team. He oversees a group of specialists who gather and synthesize intelligence from unmanned aircraft systems for military decision makers. Kurt admits that the intelligence community isn’t for everyone, but being part of a bigger cause is a powerful motivator.
“My people work around the clock in a fast-paced and often stressful environment,” Kurt says. “But they love what they do. They’re passionate about supporting the warfighter.”
The opportunity to do work that matters also drives Deputy Program Manager Rodney, whose team delivers IT infrastructure engineering and operations services for a principal intelligence agency.
“Our values here are strong and help shape the influencers of the world,” he says.
Working in the intelligence community can be a challenge—but it’s easily some of the most rewarding work we do.
Be a part of it.

Booz Allen Aberdeen: Mission Critical

Ask most people to describe a day in the life at their company and you’ll hear about cubicles, water cooler talk, maybe Taco Tuesday. But for Dake Amenyah, an electrical engineer at our Booz Allen Aberdeen office, a workday looks very different.
On the job and on the road
Dake and his team design communications equipment for the U.S. Army. Whereas many companies don’t offer the chance to build prototypes because of the cost, Booz Allen relies on the practice as a way to develop not just any solution, but the right solution.
Once he builds the prototype, Dake and the team test it in a field near the lab. But when lives are at stake, that’s not enough: The team needs to witness firsthand how soldiers use their technology. So they head to Texas.
In Texas, under the hot desert sun, Dake watches Army soldiers perform field exercises using his prototypes, noting improvements he’ll make back at the lab.
“Watching actual soldiers use my equipment is very different from a bunch of engineers running around a field with it,” Dake says. “Soldiers use the gear differently: they’re focused on their mission, not the equipment. We have to make the equipment rugged enough to withstand how soldiers need to use it.”
Solving tough problems
Once they’re back at their Aberdeen lab, Dake’s team gets to work modifying their prototypes, while other teams focus on different communications challenges faced by the Army. The rapid prototyping environment gives them the opportunity to test ideas with the men and women who will ultimately be using them.
Together, they’re solving some of the Army’s toughest problems.
There are resources and technology, tools and support waiting for you in Aberdeen. Are you ready? Join us.

Booz Allen Lexington Park: Make the Choice to Make a Difference

At Booz Allen Lexington Park, we aren’t working to live: we’re working to help others live. The safety of our country depends on what this team accomplishes every day.
Helping develop the future
Our team (cybersecurity experts, systems engineers, network systems administrators, policy analysts, data scientists, consultants, and other professionals) often works on client site—and they aren’t ordinary clients.
The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), for example, is headquartered near us at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. NAVAIR is responsible for bringing our sailors and marines home safely, and we’re responsible for helping them do it.
“We’re on the forefront of what’s happening, helping develop the future for our civilian, Department of Defense, and government clients,” says Christopher Hernandez, lead procurement manager supporting the government.
Projects that protect
One of our main projects at NAVAIR is the Presidential Helicopter Program, which provides transport for the President and Vice President of the United States. We’re helping NAVAIR redesign the helicopters’ communication systems to allow secure, long-range phone connections for coordinating landings, holding meetings, and discussing other vital issues.
We’re also collaborating with clients to use machine intelligence and deep learning to create advanced camera software that actually “learns” from data. We use this new software to test unmanned vehicles and practice catapult landings and launching. We also develop technology that provides life-or-death information to our troops in real time.
“This is next-gen stuff. We’re building things the warfighters truly use,” says Senior Recruiter Scott Mewhinney. “And we’re doing it right here in Lexington Park.”
The choice is up to you. When it comes to your career, you can get a job—or you can join a mission.

Ria Baldevia: Medieval Historian. Pythonista. Innovator.

“It’s all about teamwork: learning from your teammates and leveraging their strengths.”
Ria is a data scientist at Booz Allen in Central Maryland and is accomplishing a lot in the industry. We sat down with Ria to discuss the hard work and personal philosophy it took to get where she is today.
Tell us about yourself and your role at Booz Allen.
I started as a Booz Allen intern in Hawaii in 2015 and joined the company full-time a few months later. In February 2017, I stepped into my current role as a researcher on the Cyber team in Central Maryland. Along with a specialized background in areas including Medieval History, Art History, and Economics, I am passionate about working on innovative and practical ways to bring unique computational thinking to areas of industry and everyday life. I like finding and creating cross-sections between programming and seemingly unrelated fields such as music or even fashion. This has allowed me to both successfully operate as a data scientist and to use a variety of skills to create actionable and holistic data products.
Describe recent opportunities at Booz Allen where you have used your areas of expertise in unique and innovative ways.
As a presenter at PyCon USA 2016, PyCon Italy 2017, and SBP-BRiMS 2017, I had the opportunity to openly pursue my passion for meshing data science with fields outside of STEM. My presentation at last year’s PyCon USA, titled “Discovering the World of Python Through Music,” highlighted both the way music composition can help programmers learn Python and the importance of data structure in music. Earlier this year, I participated in a team presentation at SBP-BRiMS at George Washington University titled “Detecting Emotions and Evocative Text.” The project included using an emotion lexicon (EmoLex) to analyze politically charged articles to pinpoint repeated language usage that consistently evoked a similar emotion. Our goal was to unmask the intent behind the rhetorical choices of the written pieces we analyzed.
Going forward, I was selected as a participant in the FY18 Booz Allen Cyber Technical Innovators Program, a company-sponsored opportunity to develop my technical capabilities and explore collaborative research projects. While in the program, I plan to use a text understanding engine to compare two spoken languages to determine how social media platforms organize the dissemination of content such as advertisements.” Booz Allen offers a wealth of opportunities that have allowed me to use my background and interests, such as music and language, combined with my role as a cyber data science researcher to pursue innovative efforts and potential outputs in data analytics.
How has the Booz Allen culture enhanced these opportunities?
My professional development and achievements are in large part a credit to my coworkers at Booz Allen. I accomplished all that I have in my career and have been involved in so many diverse opportunities because people were willing to take a chance on me, with boldness and empathy, and support my pursuit of creative thinking. Booz Allen has inspired me to expand social norms by encouraging other women to get into coding and programming.
Do you have any words of wisdom for those aspiring to use their own expertise and interests in innovative ways?
There is great value in putting one’s self out there and not being afraid to take a risk, whether it be giving a presentation at a national conference, or even informally pitching an idea amongst a team of coworkers. Speaking to those who code, or are looking to begin: treat everything like a learning experience. Do not be afraid to try, or to fail! It is so important to participate in an ecosystem that promotes innovation and fosters a culture of learning from missteps. I have found this type of environment at Booz Allen, and I am able to thrive because of it.
Follow Ria’s latest updates on Twitter and learn how you can join the Booz Allen team.

Booz Allen Lexington Park: The Company You’ll Keep
Southeast of DC, Lexington Park is bordered by three rivers and the Chesapeake Bay: a nature-lover’s paradise where some of our country’s most vital technologies are being produced.
The team collaborates with the FBI, the Department of Defense, Border Patrol, and other national security organizations. “Any contractor can build a ship or an aircraft,” says Wayne Wainwright, Lead Technologist. “People come to us for the tough stuff that’s never been done before.”
The work is breaking new ground and the team is as close-knit as the town. People settle in here to raise families and build community. Christopher Hernandez, Lead Procurement Manager, shares: “After Hurricane Katrina hit, I knew I had to help, even though I didn’t have enough PTO. I was on my way out the door when my boss told me everyone had donated their time off so I wouldn’t lose a paycheck. It brought tears to my eyes.”
The team plays together too, organizing community service projects, kickball, BBQs, and other events that make work feel, well, not quite like work. And when the day is over, says Dottie Simeona, Vice President, “I can leave my office and be on a paddle board in 15 minutes.”
National security, crab feasts, paddle boarding—just a typical day in Lexington Park. Scott Mewhinney, Senior Recruiter, explains that “we want this to be the last job people take.”
Will it be yours? Join us.

We’re Betting Big on Business Analytics for Startups

We were a startup once—about 100 years ago. On the eve of World War I, Edwin G. Booz went into business for himself. He believed he could help companies by bringing an outside perspective—and analyzing the facts. It’s that idea—digging through a trove of information to unlock new solutions—that inspires our commitment to data science today.
While the methods of data science and analysis have changed, getting and using information is still key to our business and to our clients’ success. That’s why we’re ready to support the next generation of data-driven startups by sponsoring a special $10,000 prize as part of the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition. The prize will go to the team that best uses data analytics to drive innovation and inform business strategy.
The MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition is one of the largest and most well-known business plan competitions in the world. It’s helped bring to life more than 160 companies, including tech innovators like Akamai and Hubspot. Those companies have gone on to raise $1.3 billion in venture capital and command $16 billion in market capitalization. More than 30 MIT $100K startups have been acquired by major companies.
MIT runs the competition as series of distinct, increasingly intensive contests: Pitch, Accelerate, and Launch. A team of Booz Allen data scientists, strategists, and technologists will evaluate the applications and award the prize during the Launch phase.
Today’s organizations have terabytes of data at their fingertips that could streamline operations and boost revenue. The key is knowing how to deploy that data. For example, we worked with one of the world’s leading airlines, gathering data on customer behavior, operations, scheduling and pricing. The data helped the airline understand the right questions to ask to improve their business. Now, instead of asking how the data can answer a specific question, the airline’s executives have planned their entire skyway network around their customers’ needs.
The right data can even save lives. That’s why we champion the Data Science Bowl (DSB), the premier data science competition for social good. Each year the DSB challenges data scientists, technologists, domain experts, and organizations to tackle a social good issue. the 2017 competition focused on better early detection of lung cancer, one of the most common types of cancer. While breakthrough technologies like low-dose computed tomography (CT) are great, they still have relatively high false positive rates. This year’s DSB competitors created algorithms that accurately determine when lesions in the lungs are cancerous, dramatically decreasing false positives.
So while the prize money we’re offering is big, the impact we can have on people, businesses, and the world is even bigger. Want to attend the MIT $100K finale event? Get tickets here.
