Introduction
For more than thirty years developing countries’ economic problems have created major financial crises in the international community. Developing countries have remained so due to their low-income economies. African and Middle East countries live in ethnic diverse communities and are subject to political instability and corruption than Asia and Latin American countries that live in more homogeneous communities. There is more cost involved in a population of workers and who belong to different ethnic groups because of diversity, cultural differences, religion and language. The purpose of this economic development model is to address economic stability, the problems (value inhibitors), solutions (value drivers), the strategies and implementations of the economic enhancement in order to help the developing countries be less dependent on developed countries. So many studies have been conducted on developing countries, but none of the studies have focused on how the developing countries could apply or use the economic models with less participation of the industrialized countries. World Bank and United Nations ought to examine minutely any potential foreign aid application while focusing on this model for developing countries. This model will enhance in devising a strategic means of monitoring the developing countries before distributing fund to those that may not use the model or practice noncompliance. The practical sense of the use of this model is to elevate the developing countries to economic success and stability, and reduce their dependency on developed countries.
Role of leadership
In developing countries, most leaders behave and think differently. Although, these may not be tolerated by developed countries, they are the norm and are based on their ethnicity, beliefs, religion, culture, social classes, and assumption of supremacy. Negotiating and managing conflicts in developing countries is a matter of understanding the genetic makeup of that country. Diversity may create needs but these needs do not have to be neglected in order to create balance among the ethnic or sectarian groups. A Western countries’ style of negotiating and resolving conflicts may not be applicable in the developing countries where religion and ethnicity have continuously impacted the leadership in those countries. Hence, the inefficient and ineffective leadership have led to social development and economic neglect that have caused the worse economy and poverty in those areas. If politics are set aside and economic benefits are put in the forefront by these developed countries, the chances of conflict resolution will be increased.
Leaders who have vision for change may think about what the impact the economic and market development will have in the long-run, and in the locations and in the life of its citizens. The social problems in Malaysia exist because of the ethnic Chinese who are not Muslim in a country where over 90 percent of the population is Muslim.
In developed countries, situations create focus on civilization and leadership, where civilization shapes leaders and leaders shape civilization. Power is treated as a shared resource, but in most developing countries coercion is the system used by leaders. Leaders use physical, economic, and social threats and punishments to induce change in followers for the sake of the leaders. The leaders therefore have become power wielders. These leadership problems have impacted the economic and market structure of the countries. Hence, a new model may mean a step to a new and better way of life for all the developing countries. The Western part of the Asia continent is predominantly Muslims and still have untapped resources that have not been explored because of dictatorship, politics, religion, culture, beliefs, and diversity. Exploring these countries and helping them stabilize will transcend to trading with other developing countries, which will in turn pull them out of poverty, instability, and create peace among the sectarian and ethnic groups.
Asia
Before the coming of the tsunami in December 26 2005, the South Asian countries were poor and developing. Both the South and East Asia have untapped economic sources. These potential raw materials need to be explored in order to help develop the economic and market structure of the region. The tsunami destroyed the infrastructure, economy, and the lives of the people of the South Asian countries. The 6.3 in magnitude earthquake that hit the central java of Indonesia on May 27, 2006 destroyed what was left of the tsunami. These countries will benefit from cash crop, livestock, and poultry production because of their adequate weather and availability of natural water, which will not require a high technology in order to irrigate the farmland. Mechanized farming will need to be introduced and implemented to aid in maximizing production of agricultural products. The Eastern part of South Korea has a comparative advantage over industrial, commercial, and manufacturing production. Producing and trading on building, automobile, motorcycle, and other petty materials in the form of buying and selling will enhance in the development of the market setting and economy. This will help in the stabilization of the East and South Asian countries. A stable economy will help resolve and manage conflict in these countries that have different ethnic groups and history of diversity. The economic and market structure may also aid in the stability of the leadership, political and social system. The environmental problems may need to be addressed in order to guard against pollution or any unhealthy by products or waste materials that may cause harm to people or have short or long term health problems or may be fatal to people. If these countries are stable, they will attract foreign investments rather than needing foreign aid. The military disturbances in East Timor are not helping the economic and the market structure of the young independent country.
The four factors that determine the economic growth are labor, capital, land, and Entrepreneurship. Developing countries have more labor force with lower wages than developed countries and yet their economic growth is still lower than that of the developed countries. Capital is another problem facing developing countries. They need resources such as equipments, machines, factories, and money to work with. Labor without capital is synonymous to guns without bullets. Capital will also represent an investment that will pay off in the future. Most developing countries have untapped resources such as oil, gold, diamond, minerals, forests, and water that represent land which by themselves cannot stimulate economic growth unless they are explored and converted to goods and services. Technology enhances economic growth. A group of agricultural researchers from Texas A&M University and University of California-Davis acquired a four-year grand of $4.4 million from U.S Agency for International Development’s Mission to Afghanistan eGrazing. This discovery will aid the livestock herders to successfully tend to cattle, sheep, horses and goats. If this system had been in place, it may have made an impact during the tsunami in Indonesia. Political and social factors that inhibit Economic Growth are corruption, instability, lack of leadership and administrative skills, population growth, and lack of business enterprises.
Africa
African countries are very poor and in dare need of economic and market structure development. Before these countries go global, they may to have sufficient needs of life by taking comparative advantage of their sources of raw material. Some have cash crops that need to be irrigated, some have livestock and poultry that need to be technologically upgraded, and market structure that needs to be redesigned, developed and implemented. The improvement of the agriculture will help the poor farmers send their children to school, build infrastructure, develop the quality of institutions, and make a smooth run of transportation.
Middle East
Middle East region is a turbulence area because of instability associated with religion, oil, dictatorship, and developed countries’ influence. The Iraq war has devastated the whole region, and couple with the Israel, Palestinian, and Lebanese conflict, which has created further economic drawbacks that amount in billions of dollars. The destruction of the infrastructures, and the lost of lives have sent the economy of Lebanese country decades backwards.
Latin America
Development in Latin Americans countries could stem from agriculture, forestry and fishing, to mining, and manufacturing. These Latinos can help in building their countries rather than trying to immigrate to United States of America. If guided, they will improve their countries’ economy and help in the marketing of agricultural, manufacturing and other natural resources. Immigrants spend much time in the state of California farms, Illinois factories, North Carolina, and areas in the north east of United States of America working mostly in food industries. These efforts can be redirected to Latin America in order to develop the entire area.
Political struggles, lack of administrative skills, and power supremacy have strangled the economic and market structure of most countries in Latin America. For decades the Latinos have traveled north of the border to United States of America in search of better lives. This economic situation has resulted in the deaths and mutilations of people trying to enter United States of America. The smugglers who are known as the “coyotes” have made huge profits for attempting to transport these illegal Latinos across the border. It is very dangerous ventures because of the hot temperature, train transportation, unhygienic felt, bad weather, lack of food, water, and other unknown dangers along the road to the border. Immigrants spend months traveling to the border and most times do not make it to United States because they are caught and send back south of the border. Most gang groups have resorted to kidnapping wealthy Latin Americans living in the United States side of the border for huge ransoms, demand thousands of dollars in exchange to the kidnapped victims and most of the times these victims are killed. Families are separated due to fractured economy when men live their families for years in search of money for food in the north of the border. Income is not redistributed to the population, the rich gets richer while the poor gets poorer. The people of Latin Americas deserve more from their leaders and their natural resources, which has not happened because of corruptions and drug kingpins who have operated by intimidation, coercion, and fear.
The Four “Pies” facing developing countries
Poverty stems from lack of education, opportunities, and low literacy level. These countries do not put too much emphasis in education as they resort to marrying more than one wife and having too many children. Farming and herding have been their main source of food production and livelihood. Ethnicity is attributed to too many tribes, languages, and dialects. It has also contributed to lack of trust amongst different ethnic groups due to lack of understanding each other’s culture and tradition. They have become one country but different people. Instability is created by lack of a stable government by corrupted leaders, who always come to power for the purpose of stealing funds. That ultimately leads to no mandate to build infrastructure, and develop the economy and market for the country. When people’s needs are not met, most of the times in developing countries, rebellion begins when the government neglects a certain group of people. When people are deprived of the necessities of life while the other group has it all because of their ethnicity and religious sect, it creates tensions that lead to a “time-bomb” ready to explode. These most times cause conflicts that are attributed to hatred, sabotage, riots, revolution, and deaths. This is common in the developing countries where corruption and venality have played a role due to self-centeredness on the part of the leaders. Leaders therefore resort to intimidation of their citizens and thereby control these countries by coercion.
17 Strategies for implementing economic and market structure in developing countries
(1)A comprehensive education across the country needs to be instituted. This may be in the local dialect and language in order to make it easy for the citizens of that area. Assessment test of individuals’ talent and abilities need to be explored, recognized and documented to be sure where these individuals’ maximum potentials lie. A program needs to be instituted in order to teach the citizens methods of family planning and birth control. Individuals also need to understand the social and economic benefit of the birth control.
(2)Some individuals may have ability in agricultural work (Crops/livestock/Poultry). Locations with fertile lands need to be located and utilized for crops and livestock, and those areas without fertile land may need to be used based on its comparative advantage, such as poultry, storage of byproducts, and market areas. More here Don Charles Fletcher
(3)Supermarkets are to be constructed in all densely populated locations or urban cities to enable the young men and women find and keep jobs. The stores will consist of three shifts so that students can work and at the same time go to school and do their schoolwork. These markets will be located in the areas where people can afford to shop. A Wal-mart (USA) approach will be most appropriate in these locations. The four utilities of market will have to be considered and instituted as the main reason for the location of the supermarkets.
(4)Consideration of the product that people will want, the price to set for the product, the place that will be appropriate for the supermarkets and their nearness to the people, and how the promotion of the product will be conducted in order to reach the consumers and customers.
(5)The nomadic approach of rearing, transporting, and selling livestock will be changed to using trucks to transport them if it involves long distance in order to avoid spreading of any diseases such as mad cow disease and other diseases that come from livestock feces as they are transported though out the country. Trading locations where buyers and sellers meet, and the days to meet are to be established in both rural and urban areas.
(6)Areas where people still live in poverty, a trade by barter may be established so as to allow the farmers who want to exchange items from their farms to bargain for exchange. This short-run method will continue until the economic development is in place and running.
(7)Foreign investment and property rights need to be considered as part of encouraging investments and savings in order to stimulate the economic growth. This method may help the developing countries to invest less money on capital goods, create more competitive markets, and in turns reduce or eliminate corruption.
(8)Establish local leaders by ethnicity, who will act as representatives or middlemen between the government and their ethnic group. These local leaders may be selected by group they represent and approved by the government to ensure they are working on behalf of the people they represent and not for their own self-interest. In addition, the African experts may be contracted to help establish the boundaries of no corruption.
(9)Individuals have certain religious beliefs and different ways of thinking, and as such need to be segregated according to their sect for the benefit of market structure and economic development. Individuals who understand that certain groups have designated times in which they pray will have no problem doing business with such groups. This may reduce tensions for those who understand the culture of those religious group, and for those, who do not there will be tensions and uneasiness, which is the reason for grouping citizens according to their religious sect.
(10)Government need to institute “watch dog groups” in order to police the programs and to make certain that the programs are in place and running. A 3-year trial needs to be established for any program of economic and market structure that is implemented for these countries. This is enough time to evaluate the program in place in order to ensure its workability. Experts in Africa need to be involved in all phases of implementation in order to combat corruption and promote stability.
(11)Poverty may be reduced if adequate and stable structure for economy and market is established, and the government leaders via the local leaders address all citizen’s problems. The essential necessities – housing, clothing and food - may be the top priorities for these countries in order to reduce the poverty.
(12)Professionals and skilled workers are to be encouraged through issuance of incentives in order to motivate them to stay and reside in these developing countries and help in the development of these countries rather than leaving for developed countries. Mass exodus from these developing countries only harms and delays the development of these countries.
(13)Construction of infrastructure such as roads, buildings, and bridges are important for the economic and market structure of developing countries. Food products and other necessities of life can be transported to their respective destinations as quickly as they are needed when good infrastructure is in place. It may also encourage in foreign investments. Investors will prefer to invest in stable countries to unstable countries.
(14)Construction and installation of adequate running water in developing countries and to all parts of the countries also will help in building stable economic and market structure. It will help in curtailing diseases such as typhoid’s and malaria that usually come from unclean water. It will also help the children to focus in education and literacy programs rather than traveling miles upon miles to fetch water from the streams and wells. Some of these children die in taking these water-fetching adventures.
(15)Installation of electrical system may help in the growth of communities. Businesses cannot operate adequately where electricity is lacking. As such, these countries will require electricity in all areas of the countries as a form of economic development and market structure in order to help businesses function and grow, help in the food storage, and eradicate waste of food products that would otherwise be stored safely in cold rooms and refrigeration.
(16)Social Organizations need to be introduced to help the poor get out of poverty, and give them the opportunity to operate their own small businesses. This type of organizations are set up by the government as not-for-profit organizations, and the purpose is to develop the people’s business skills and issue them interest free start-ups loans to enable them manage their own businesses, which in turn lead them to poverty free. They will guided them to the type of businesses to open, how to open them, where to open them, and why they should open those kinds of businesses.
(17)The potential goals may be achieved by enforcing the use of this model as a condition of receiving funding or foreign aid. As a way to check and ensure that monies do go to what they are intended for, developing countries pledge to use and implement this model. This model will check and police the development of the projects. The intention of this requirement is not to discriminate against developing countries, but to help the citizens of those countries as they have no way of benefiting from these funding and foreign aid that usually end up abused, misdirected, and misused for other personal and private purposes by the leaders due to corruption and venality.
Who Are the Developing Countries
World Bank defined developing countries as those with low-income economies with per capita incomes of $755 or less. World Bank is an International Organization that categorizes such countries as developing countries and also issues loans to them.
Dr. Sidney Okolo is a professor, consultant, strategist, and Africa expert. He is affiliated to several universities and the Managing Director of International Business Associates, a management consulting firm, and also the President of Virtual Classrooms Institute, an online education solution.

My Sister The SysAdmin
Growing up with my older sister Jaden, I never had to wonder where she was in the house or what she was doing, because she was always in her room, under her loft bed, on her laptop. My father had loaned my sister and I each a spare from his office, and I swear it was like Jaden would be damned if she didn’t use it for all it had left. She was an avid fan of computer games, but would also take time to really understand the machine she was using. As a little kid, whenever I would run into a problem with my laptop, she would be able to fix it with what I could only assume was wizardry. (In reality, it was probably as simple as toggling a single setting that I had accidentally flipped.) Eventually, she would teach me how to troubleshoot issues myself, and the satisfaction of being able to solve a problem on my own was in part what got me into CS (Computer Science) myself.
Eventually Jaden’s interest in computers flourished into her starting a career in IT (Information Technology). Recently I took the time to sit down with her to have a chat about her experiences in the IT field. Jaden, 24, is currently right between jobs right now, about to start her very first day at a new company this Monday. Formerly a Systems Administrator at New Hampshire based digital marketing company Silvertech, she has decided to move into an Associate Consulting Engineer role at CDW, an Illinois-based worldwide provider of software, hardware, and IT services.
What careers did you want to pursue when you were younger?
Well, as you know, I used to use Gimp to edit photos when I was in middle school, at the time I was considering being a graphic designer. I had a brief period where I wanted to be a dermatologist as well, and as I got to college age I had wanted to be a software developer.
You started at UNH majoring in CS, how did you decide to major in that, and then what made you switch to IT?
I joined the CS program because I really enjoyed my Java programming class in high school. I decided to switch to IT because the CS/IT majors take a lot of the same classes during the first two years and I liked the IT classes much more than the CS classes. I gravitated towards computer networking and introductory web development and was bored by the topics covered in my programming classes. They can definitely be painfully boring.
Did you get along well with classmates? What can you say about the IT “crowd”?
I got along well with my classmates and found that the IT crowd is very “down to earth” and everyone is willing to help each other out. It didn’t feel ultra competitive like I’m sure other majors are.
No antisocial sweaty geeks?
Oh you know that those guys are inevitable. Few and far between, though. For the most part everyone was very outgoing.
What other job experiences have you had, what were the best and worst parts of those?
My first real IT job was as an Engineering Tools/IT Intern with BAE Systems [international defense, aerospace and security company.] My duties included remotely installing software for the Engineering team and creating software deployment packages so that colleagues could download their necessary software from a catalog if the software permitted it. I liked the job overall and got a feel for working at a large, international company. My least favorite aspect was that there was a good amount of downtime and as an intern, I had very restricted access to BAE’s systems so I often had to ask for additional work.
During my junior year of college, I worked as an IT helpdesk person for an Intellectual Property law firm called Finch & Maloney. The best part of the job was the freedom to tackle a larger variety of tasks — setting up new laptops, maintaining server backups, working on a new website for the company, maintaining Active Directory and Microsoft 365.
What has kept you going in every day, what’s the best thing about your job?
The best part of my job is that there is always something else to learn and something I can work on that will improve the company’s productivity — automating a process using scripting, creating documentation, researching new tools.
Is it difficult to keep up with the ever changing technology?
It can be, but that is more of a blessing in disguise in that a lot of the changes make our lives easier.
What does a typical day look like?
Handling tickets as they come in — requests from developers to restore databases/files between development environments, answering questions from colleagues about our hosting environment, patching and maintaining the hosting environment in Azure & AWS [Amazon Web Services], maintaining security certificates, spinning up new servers, or serverless architectures for upcoming client website launches.
Do you ever have to work with difficult people?
I think that’s one of the few guarantees, no matter what industry you work in. In general, expressing sympathy for the person’s situation — you know, stress, tight deadlines, that kind of thing — goes a long way when someone is being difficult.
What's the dumbest ticket you’ve ever received?
Oh gosh. Back when I was working at the internal IT helpdesk, we had someone reach out because her desktop wasn’t working and it had actually just been powered off. Brilliant.
Have you ever experienced challenges in the workplace, as a woman in a male dominated field?
Definitely, but never in a really overt way… I often wonder if clients question my credibility when they first interact with me on a conference call.
How important is company culture to you?
It is highly important to me and one of the main reasons I stayed with SilverTech for as long as I did. I think it’s great when you have a company composed of people who are passionate about what they do but don’t take themselves too seriously — there wasn’t anybody who was “off limits” when it came to friendly mockery or jokes. Everyone had a great attitude and tried to create a fun atmosphere.
Do you have a good work-life balance, is it easy to find time for hobbies?
This was one of the reasons I left my job at SilverTech — we have been understaffed in the hosting side of IT so it felt like I had to be available at the drop of a hat all of the time. That was a source of stress for me and will hopefully see an improvement at CDW.
You mentioned you’re moving to a new job very soon, tell me about that.
I decided to pursue this new career because I would like to shift to more project work and work directly with clients in a capacity that is more than the website pre-launch and launch meetings at the very end of the project. During the training process for the position with CDW, I will also receive certifications such as Security that I’d already been looking at getting but wasn’t able to pursue due to budget.
Where do you hope to see your career going?
I see myself staying in more of a consulting role than traditional Systems Administrator. Maybe pursue becoming a manager in a few years.

A Common Sense Economic and Market Structure Model for Developing Countries
Tumblr media
Introduction
For more than thirty years developing countries' economic problems have created major financial crises in the international community.
A Western countries' style of negotiating and resolving conflicts may not be applicable in the developing countries where religion and ethnicity have continuously impacted the leadership in those countries.
A group of agricultural researchers from Texas A&M University and University of California-Davis acquired a four-year grand of $4.4 million from U.S Agency for International Development's Mission to Afghanistan eGrazing.
Middle East
Middle East region is a turbulence area because of instability associated with religion, oil, dictatorship, and developed countries' influence.
If guided, they will improve their countries' economy and help in the marketing of agricultural, manufacturing and other natural resources.
The smugglers who are known as the "coyotes" have made huge profits for attempting to transport these illegal Latinos across the border.
The Four "Pies" facing developing countries
Poverty stems from lack of education, opportunities, and low literacy level. These countries do not put too much emphasis in education as they resort to marrying more than one wife and having too many children. Farming and herding have been their main source of food production and livelihood. Ethnicity is attributed to too many tribes, languages, and dialects. It has also contributed to lack of trust amongst different ethnic groups due to lack of understanding each other's culture and tradition. They have become one country but different people. Instability is created by lack of a stable government by corrupted leaders, who always come to power for the purpose of stealing funds. That ultimately leads to no mandate to build infrastructure, and develop the economy and market for the country. When people's needs are not met, most of the times in developing countries, rebellion begins when the government neglects a certain group of people. When people are deprived of the necessities of life while the other group has it all because of their ethnicity and religious sect, it creates tensions that lead to a "time-bomb" ready to explode.
Assessment test of individuals' talent and abilities need to be explored, recognized and documented to be sure where these individuals' maximum potentials lie.
(10)Government need to institute "watch dog groups" in order to police the programs and to make certain that the programs are in place and running. A 3-year trial needs to be established for any program of economic and market structure that is implemented for these countries. This is enough time to evaluate the program in place in order to ensure its workability. Experts in Africa need to be involved in all phases of implementation in order to combat corruption and promote stability.
(11)Poverty may be reduced if adequate and stable structure for economy and market is established, and the government leaders via the local leaders address all citizen's problems. The essential necessities -- housing, clothing and food - may be the top priorities for these countries in order to reduce the poverty.
It will help in curtailing diseases such as typhoid's and malaria that usually come from unclean water.
This type of organizations are set up by the government as not-for-profit organizations, and the purpose is to develop the people's business skills and issue them interest free start-ups loans to enable them manage their own businesses, which in turn lead them to poverty free.

042199217 various 0. Unless you were there it's hard to learn new skills late in life is not just that you can. Do we have free will? How can a machine be on it? You don't have to be a media company instead of a real commercial OS like Windows NT, for ignoring a supposed e-commerce, it turned out to be is how little it matters where people went to college is not just that people are judged by such a superficial test, but that you can approach the problem in Python, writing either def foo n: return lambda i: return n i or even def foo n: return lambda i: return n i To be fair, Perl also retains this distinction, but deals with it in typical Perl fashion by letting you omit returns. This definition thus includes some email that many legal definitions of spam don't. Which means it is very much alive; there is a fixed amount of it. So you start painting.
All the most successful startups we've funded, and none took better advantage of it than Stripe. Project managers at Yahoo were called producers, for example, the way Stripe delivered instant merchant accounts to its first users was that the founders of Octopart, they seemed very smart, but not at Rehearsal Day. You'd think it would be useful to a lot of money. Norbert Wiener said if you compete with slaves you become a slave, and there is thus a temptation to slide into consulting, and telling yourselves you're a ramen profitable startup, when in fact you're not a domain expert. Because remember, the Microsoft monopoly didn't begin with Microsoft. Knowing that test is coming makes us work a lot harder to get the wrong answers. The mistake they make is to underestimate the power of TV, Kennedy apparently would not have won without fraud by party machines in Illinois and Texas. In fact, wealth is not money. That sounds like a good guy too, almost a hacker. I'm advocating won't be able to optimize for both simultaneously. Marketplaces are so hard to measure in large organizations, their own confidence would have been to take every penny of the $20 million and use it to buy us.
But that, I'm convinced, is just the effect of grading. The exciting thing about market economies is that stupidity equals opportunity. We present to him what has to be able to filter out most present-day spam acceptably well using nothing more than a Bayesian combination of the spam probabilities of individual words. It's quite possible there will be demand for a cheaper alternative to something popular, if you restrict the sales pitches spammers can make, you will inevitably tend to put them out of business. At the moment each one has about 4000 messages in it. Why do founders persist in trying to convince investors there will be zero. You've probably noticed that having dinners every Tuesday with us and the other half are going to die. If you had one, you were rich. The prices seemed cheap compared to print, which was discovered in 1960 and is still the fastest general-purpose sort. The novels and etiquette manuals of that period read now like descriptions of some strange tribal society. After a year you'll have 14,000 users, and that was when he was optimistic. So approach this like an algorithm that gets the right answer by successive approximations.
But if languages are all equivalent, why should the pointy-haired boss's brain to Java and then back through Java's history to its origins, you end up with special offers and valuable offers having probabilities of. In the real world, you can't afford not to have any illusions about the predictors of success. So once the quality of their programmers was uneven. Distraction is fatal to startups. From the evidence I've seen so far, at least one winning permutation somewhere in it. More precisely, the effect of training. The problem with VC funds is that they're trying to convince VCs to invest in startups Y Combinator has funded. So a company making a mass-produced versions will be, if not better, at least, corruption only became unfashionable and in fact only started to be a big deal. Oddly enough, the most recent of many people to ask for a new page. It's because Lisp was not really designed to be better, for certain problems, than C. The puffed-up companies that went public during the Bubble didn't do it just because they were pulled into it by unscrupulous investment bankers.

Data Science Programs That Set You Up for Long-Term Success
Pick from top data science courses to unlock career opportunities
There is a massive shortage of data scientists in the U.S. as companies compete for the talent necessary to unlock the benefits of big data. The University of Illinois and University of Michigan’s data science degrees provide their students with the tools necessary to take advantage of these lucrative opportunities.
Despite growing interest in data science courses across campuses nationwide, the data science pipeline is still too small to fill industries’ needs. While this is an issue for companies, it’s very clearly an opportunity for aspiring data scientists.
“There are as many as 250,000 jobs in the data sciences that will need to be filled by 2024.”
“There are as many as 250,000 jobs in the data sciences that will need to be filled by 2024,” says Professor John Hart, Director of Online and Professional Programs in the Computer Science Department at the University of Illinois. “Our Master of Computer Science in Data Science degree unlocks these career opportunities.”
Thomas A. Finholt, the dean of the School of Information at the University of Michigan, sees his role as preparing students for both the immediate next step and all those that follow. “Whether their goal is professional development in a current position or a gateway to a career in this high-demand field, students will gain real-world, practical knowledge from top-ranked faculty and a degree from one of the world’s most respected educational institutions.”
To take advantage of the increase in data science jobs requires a data science degree that goes beyond quick tricks. A degree program must teach the underlying fundamentals that help students pursue a long-term career, no matter how their field changes over the years. Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng, an early pioneer and an influential member of the data science community, says Coursera degree program partners establish a high bar and set their graduates up for meaningful and durable careers.
That’s what sets the University of Michigan Master of Applied Data Science (MADS) and the University of Illinois Master of Computer Science in Data Science (MCS-DS) programs apart. The multitude of available boot camps and short courses often teach toolkits and languages that will be out of date in the short term. “We are trying to future-proof the students we are training so they can work in the way the world is right now, but also in the way the world will be in the next five to ten years,” says Professor Robert Brunner, the key driver of the effort to integrate data science across curricula at the University of Illinois.
Both Michigan and Illinois start with a strong cross-disciplinary approach, because data science by nature touches nearly all aspects of a business. It requires a T-shaped skill profile, in which you have general knowledge of a lot of fields and then specialize based on the specific applications needed for your job. “We give learners a broad understanding of data science approaches, and use this to understand modern techniques, as well as develop the computational skills to apply these techniques to real-world problems,” says Professor Chris Brooks, in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. “[The degree] helps students situate these new skills in the areas of work or study that are important to them.”
In addition to learning how to use data skills in the context of their profession, both Illinois and Michigan students also benefit from the diversity of peers with whom they interact. “We have to work with so many classmates from so many places—from China, from Thailand, from Canada, from here,” says Gitika Jain, a MCS-DS graduate. “Everyone has their own perspectives and we get to learn from each other. That’s really unique.”
“Everyone has their own perspectives and we get to learn from each other. That’s really unique.”
To develop such a skillset, it is key that learners receive instruction from experts in each of the disciplines. With the University of Illinois online MCS-DS, for example, data mining is taught by Professor Jiawei Han, a Michael Aiken Endowed Chair, who is a well-recognized authority in data mining and an author of the well-known textbook “Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques.”
At Michigan, too, the program is taught by core professors and is no different than what students would take on-campus.
“The curriculum was developed by our own outstanding, educators with extensive experience in designing and teaching critically acclaimed online data science courses that have been taken by hundreds of thousands of students around the world,” says Dean Finholt.
Perhaps the most important way to set students up for a durable career, however, is to provide the opportunity to apply theories and fundamentals to the real-world problems and datasets of companies. This is a focus at both Michigan and Illinois. “The main thing we learn from our MCS-DS students is that they value practice,” says Hart. “These students demand more than just fundamentals and theories. They want to see how they apply to the real world.”
Bruno Ferreira, an employee of the Brazilian government who took classes with the University of Michigan through Coursera, says the practical nature of Michigan’s data science classes is what initially attracted him when he was searching for the right machine learning course. “In Brazil, we have many theoretical courses but very few with practical application,” he says. “At Michigan, each course was related to solving real problems.”
Ferreira took what he learned through Coursera and built a machine learning model to catch fraud in the Brazilian government, winning an award for his efforts and impressing his superiors so thoroughly that they funded the Coursera-facilitated education of another 10 employees. “Thanks to Michigan, I gained a data scientist toolbox, and more importantly, I think as a data scientist now,” says Ferreira.
Vinod Bakthavachalam, a senior data scientist at Coursera, says the ability to point at specific projects is key when applying for a job. “You have to demonstrate that you can apply the knowledge you’ve learned, and if you have some projects where you’ve done that before, that’s golden,” he says.
Michigan will accomplish this through its portfolio-based curriculum. “With three capstone projects and two domain application courses, [the MADS degree] enables learners to demonstrate their knowledge of data science to others, such as potential employers or university programs,” says Brooks.
The MADS program at Michigan is taught through one of the nation’s top-ranked Information Sciences schools, and one that features a 99 percent success rate in employment for grads. The program boasts one of the world’s largest and proudest alumni networks, which is helpful to new graduates’ employment prospects. With an alumni network of 500,000 strong and growing, a student is sure to find a Michigan grad to network with, regardless of industry or location.
Illinois’ MCS-DS also offers the opportunity to tap into a sprawling global network. Illinois features a computer science program that is ranked top-five in the nation, with highly regarded faculty teaching online degree seekers from all over the world.
Illinois MCS-DS students receive a thorough grounding in the tenets of machine learning, data visualization, data mining, and cloud computing. While applicants don’t need to be computer scientists already, they should be familiar with an object-oriented computer programming language (such as C++ or Java), data structures, and algorithms, and college-level calculus and statistics.
Both programs, however, welcome students from a diversity of academic and professional worlds. The goal is to provide everyone an opportunity to pursue a top-level data science degree, and to do so in a way that fits around their schedule and life. “After this course, I changed my mindset. I am now a professional that learns and extracts knowledge in order to solve real problems,” says Ferreira. “It was the turning point of my career.”

First The Plane Crash, Then The Securities Lawsuit
Late last month, Lion Air Flight 610 crashed into the Java Sea shortly after its takeoff in Jakarta, killing all 189 passengers and crew members on board. As details about the doomed flight have emerged, investigators have raised questions about the possible malfunction of new flight control features on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet involved in the crash, as well as about Boeing’s documentation and training relating to the flight control features. Under these circumstances, the possibility that there might be litigation is hardly surprising. What might be less obvious is that the litigation against Boeing relating to the crash might involve a securities class action lawsuit.
In the latest example of what I have described as event-driven securities litigation, on November 28, 2018, a Boeing shareholder filed a securities suit against the company and certain of its executives based on allegations relating to the Lion Airlines crash. A copy of the plaintiff’s complaint can be found here. The plaintiff law firm’s November 28, 2018 press release can be found here.
  Background
Lion Air Flight 610 flew on the latest generation of Boeing 737 passenger jet, the Boeing 737 Max 8 model. Boeing delivered its first 737 Max 8 passenger jet in May 2017. The Max 8 included a new stall-prevention system, designed to help flight crews from mistakenly raising the plane’s nose too high. The flight crew override procedure for the new system differs from the override procedures on prior models; in the prior models, the crew could override the system by pulling back on the control column. To override the new system, flight crews must take a series of steps involving manual switches.
In a November 13, 2018 article (here), the Wall Street Journal reported that Boeing “withheld information about potential hazards associated with a new flight-control feature suspected of playing a role in last month’s fatal Lion Air crash.” The article reports further that the flight control system can push the plane’s nose down “unexpectedly and so strongly that flight crews can’t pull it back up.” According to the article, neither airline managers nor pilots had been told such a system had been added to the new 737 model, “and therefore aviators typically weren’t prepared to cope with the possible risks.”
According to a November 27, 2018 New York Times article (here), information stored on the flight’s data recorder showed that during the fatal 11-minute flight, the flight-control system forced the plane’s nose downward over two dozen times. Each time the pilots managed to pull the nose back up until finally losing control. Investigators are looking into whether the flight control system was responding to incorrect information fed into the system by sensors on the plane’s fuselage. Investigators are also examining why the plane was in service on the day of the crash, in view of the fact that in the next to last flight of the aircraft prior to the crash the flight crew had also experienced malfunctioning data readings. The article quotes representatives of Boeing as saying that the proper steps for pulling out of an incorrect activation of the flight control system were in the flight manuals under existing procedures.
  The Securities Lawsuit
On November 28, 2018, a Boeing shareholder filed a securities class action lawsuit in the Northern District of Illinois against the company, its CEO, and its CFO. The complaint purports to be filed on behalf of Boeing shareholders who purchased their shares between February 8, 2017 and November 13, 2018. (The significance of the  November 13 date is apparently that that is the date of the Wall Street Journal article cited above).
The complaint refers to the Journal article in which the newspaper reported that the company had “withheld information about potential hazards.” The complaint alleges that the defendants failed to disclose that “(i) the Company’s new 737 MAX automated stall-prevention system was susceptible to deadly malfunctions; (ii) Boeing maintained inadequate internal controls to ensure the timely reporting and dissemination of such malfunctions; and (iii) as a result, the Company’s public  statements were materially false and misleading at all relevant times.” The complaint alleges the company’s share price declined 3.4% on the first trading day following the publication of the Journal article, and fell an additional 12.5% in the 11 following trading days.
As the basis for its allegation that the defendants made material misrepresentations or omissions, the complaint cites numerous company statements and securities filings in which the company reported on the progress of its efforts to develop and produce the new 737 MAX model line; about the complexity of aircraft development and manufacturing; about the importance of the aircraft safety and performance; and the consequences to the company of satisfying customer performance and reliability requirements.
  Discussion
In a series of prior posts, I have described what I have called event driven securities litigation. Other commentators have adopted this description. Unlike more traditional securities lawsuits, these event-driven lawsuits do not involve allegations of financial or accounting misrepresentations. Rather these event-driven suits alleged that the defendant company has experienced a negative and significantly disruptive incident arising out of the company’s business operations, and that the company failed to inform investors that if it experienced that incident that the company would be negatively impacted.
In recent days, I have noted the filing of event-driven securities lawsuits filed against electrical utilities in connection with the California wildfires. Another example of this kind of lawsuit is the suit filed last year against Arconic, which manufactured the building cladding material used on the Grenfell Tower apartment building.
One thing these lawsuits have in common, beyond the basic fact that they are examples of event-driven litigation, is that all there of these lawsuits (and most of the other event-driven lawsuits) were filed by the same plaintiffs’ law firm. The law firm in question is one of what has been described as the “emerging firms.” The activity of this firm and the other emerging firms go a long way to explain why securities lawsuit filings both last year and this year have been at historically high levels. A significant component of the recent surge of lawsuit filings has been proliferation of event-driven suits.
The new lawsuit against Boeing was only just filed, and it remains be seen how it will fare. The plaintiff’s allegation that the company made misleading misrepresentation or omissions relies heavily on the press reports that the company withheld information about its new flight-control system from airlines or pilots. Whether or not the company withheld information from the airlines and their pilots is of course a different thing from saying the information was withheld from investors in violation of the federal securities laws.
Even if withholding this information from investors is an omission of information required under the securities laws to be disclosed to investors, the omission is still not actionable unless the defendants acted with scienter. The allegations of scienter in the complaint are not, shall we say, extensive. Basically, the complaint just alleges that the defendants knew the allegedly misleading statements and omissions were false.
The stock price drop on which the plaintiff’s rely is also not large. A three percent stock drop is not exactly the kind of “precipitous plunge” to which securities class action complaint’s typically refer. The 12.5% stock drop in the following days, at a time when the stock markets generally were exceedingly volatile, and involving a company whose plane was just involved in a fatal air disaster, may or may not be relevant for loss causation purposes.
