Final Reflection

Jazz has changed and grown throughout the centuries and it is impacted by the society and the growth of music. We can see that Jazz has encompass and include other cultures by how other cultures have used Jazz to solve problems or they have reconciled their music from their culture with Jazz. One of the ways Jazz has included other culture from around the world is through Mieko Miyazaki. She is a Japanese Jazz musician and she used the Koto which is a Japanese traditional instrument to play Jazz music. This shows how people have combined their culture’s music with Jazz. I believe that the inclusion of other cultures’ music do not detract from real Jazz because Jazz is a music of expression and it does not have to follow some type of regulation. Jazz may come in various ways and even though it may have a certain origin and how it was first made, it does not have to be that way. Many people across the world have produced Jazz music according to their culture and expression and it did not follow the original Jazz because Jazz could not be defined. According to my opinion, Jazz could be said as an expression, art, and there are various definitions.

 Jazz could be a solution to reconcile cultures. In the past, Li Jinhui used Jazz to unify China and make China stronger. China had a civil war and he was trying to reconcile China using Jazz. He also produced a song with orphans in the past which also shows that he was trying to find peace in his country. This was in the past but what about the future? I believe that Jazz could solve conflicts between cultures in the world, although it may not be significant. In the past, Jazz has solved various problems because it was something very popular back then. But this day, Jazz is not very popular in the society and the society is more exposed to pop and rock. But, I believe that Jazz could make a change in cultures but not between cultures due to the decrease in popularity these days.
