Julien Gasc — L'Appel de la Foret (Born Bad Records)
Tumblr media
L'appel de la forêt by Julien
Julien Gasc’s past two solo albums (also his only solo albums), Cerf, Biche Et Faon in 2013 and Kiss Me, You Fool ! in 2016, collected compact songs brimming with busy ideas, both brilliant and spry. Both pulling from a wide pantheon of French music, from Jean-Claude Vannier, Catherine Albeiro, or Alain Goraguer, Cerf, Biche Et Faon felt a bit more diaristic and Kiss Me, You Fool ! was sprawling but contained fascinating, tight-knit pockets of influence that popped vibrantly. Julien’s history dates further back than 2013 though, primarily as a main songwriter in Aquaserge, the now inactive Hyperclean, and a brief stint as Stereolab’s keyboardist.
On L’Appel de la Foret (The Call of the Forest), the end of his trilogy of solo releases, all the parts that make Gasc an effective songwriter settle and distill for his most consistent album yet. His morose but intriguing melodies line each song as does a steady, krautish and clear drumbeat. The compositions are sturdy, compact, and smart, Gasc delivering the purest version of his deep-set grooves.
Certain parts complement Gasc’s sound to the fullest, most notably Catherine Hershey’s vocals, a constant that adds a subtle dimension of conversational harmony. On “Libertas et Firegasc,” Gasc and Hershey have a detached call-and-response in French and English, spoken and sung. Towards the end, Gasc sings “you know that I love” with Hershey’s spoken reply of “for today it’s a no, but let’s hang tomorrow,” before she sings a refrain she goes to throughout, telling him to “keep his flame cool,” before they both laugh to end the song. Closer “Undying Eyes,” the only fully English-sung track, follows the soft phrasings of Gasc and an accompanying piano as Hershey’s double-tracked vocals harmonizes, but more often runs counterpoint. Gasc’s practically fluent English is tender with sounds he’s unsure of, and the ascending analog synth line is overtly simple, but sparsely and effectively placed. It snaps into an infinite groove of layered vocals, a fuzzed-out, four-note bass line, and a casually confident drumbeat.
The nuanced repetitions of Gasc’s grooves and the small variations of the same themes within each song allow foreign elements to enter and exit organically, breaking open the sound even more. “Passer, Laisser” waltzes along when a shimmering pedal steel guitar with a slight wah-wah enters just about a minute in nearly unnoticeably, matching the melody and guiding it along later in the song.
L'Appel de la Foret is free and sensitive, lyrically touching on romance and social issues both in France, such as the Yellow Vest Movement, and on a global scale. The music is understated and comfortable in its skin, taking time to fill out the form and structure of each song, something that makes this effort feel slightly more distinguished than Gasc’s past albums.

Gamay 36, Mount Edward Muirkirk Vineyard Gamay 2017
Had this last night at Scotch Bar in Blenheim. It’s a new wine from Mount Edward, and it’s a Gamay with no additions at all, including sulphites. And it’s utterly delicious and brilliant. Good work Duncan Forsyth and team!
Mount Edward Muirkirk Vineyard Gamay 2017 Central Otago, New Zealand 13.5% alcohol. No added sulfites. Concentrated, fresh and a bit spiky with some peppery hints and sweet raspberry and cherry fruit. So lively and pure with brilliant fruit expression. This is a really lLovely wine with amazing depth of fruit. 93/100
