La marquise de Maintenon, une créole martiniquaise méconnue Françoise d’Aubigné voit le jour le 27 novembre 1635, à la prison de Niort dans le Poitou en France, un lieu de naissance quelque peu singulier, pour un destin tout aussi singulier et extraordinaire que celui d’une « presque » Reine, épouse de Louis XIV. Les premières années de l’enfance et de l’adolescence de la marquise de Maintenon vécues en Martinique sont méconnues ou passées sous silence. Pourtant le surnom de « Belle indienne » évoqueralongtemps son séjour dans les îles.Petite-fille d’Agrippa d’Aubigné, fille de Constant d’Aubigné et de Isabelle Jeanne de Cardilhac, Françoise d’Aubigné est issue d’une famille noble, protestante et désargentée. Ces origines lui vaudront les critiques les plus haineuses de certains courtisans et certaines favorites de la cour royale.Mathieu Auguste Geffroy (1820-1895), historien déclare dans son livre Madame de Maintenon, d'après sa correspondance authentique : choix de ses lettres et entretiens « Aucune existence n' a été plus diversement jugée. La Duchesse d'Orléans poursuit de sa haine celle qui n'est à ses yeux, dit elle, qu'une misérable concubine. Saint Simon ne se lasse pas de médire de la « chêtive veuve, de naissance obscure et à peu près honteuse, d' une vie misérable, basse, qui voulant se mêler de toutes les affaires, s'est laissée tromper comme à plaisir et n'a été que la reine des dupes ». La Baumelle, de son côté, accumule sur elle les inventions les plus grossières. Madame de Sévigné, si sévère pour quelques autres, nous la montre; au contraire, pleine d'esprit, de tact aussi bien que de charme. Voltaire la venge « des anas, des chroniques scandaleuses et des contes dont elle a été l'objet. » »Vu ce contexte relativement conflictuel, ce texte ne prétend pas relater le parcours de Françoise d’Aubigné, mais seulement donner un éclairage critique sur certaines périodes de sa vie telles que son enfance antillaise, sa supposée influence sur la révocation de l’édit de Nantes ou encore sur l’élaboration du Code Noir.Des versions différentes concernant la biographie de Françoise d’Aubigné ont été publiées entre le XVIIe et le XIXe siècle. Cependant, elles relatent une trame semblable sur son enfance dans les îles d’Amérique et particulièrement en Martinique. Constant d’Aubigné (1585-1647), le père de Françoise d’Aubigné, future Mme de Maintenon, était un grand aventurier cherchant fortune dans les nouvelles colonies. Des relations d'affaires avec les Anglais concernant des territoires coloniaux seraient à l'origine d’accusations de trahison qui donnent lieu à son emprisonnement à Bordeaux puis à Niort au Château-Trompette sous le commandement, semble-t-il, du duc d’Epernon. Il rencontre dans ce lieu, Jeanne de Cardilhac, fille du lieutenant de Cardilhac chargé de la garde du château. Il épouse cette dernière et auront trois enfants dont Françoise.Le nom de Constant d'Aubigné est mentionné dans les mémoires du premier voyage de Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, gouverneur de Saint-Christophe, à la Martinique en 1635. Il est également cité dans les archives de la famille du Buc :« Mr du Plessis d’Ossonville avait préparé, dans une auberge de Dieppe, avec Jean-François du Buc un armement pour les Antilles, grâce à son « parent éloigné », disait-on, le cardinal.Ils signèrent un accord particulier le 14 février 1635. Ces trois hommes (Messieurs du Plessis d’Ossonville, Lyénard de l’Olive, et du Buc du Fontenil) ainsi que Constant d’Aubigné, père de Mme de Maintenon, réussirent à convaincre des malheureux engagés grâce à leurs fallacieuses promesses de racoleurs. Ces quatre Français menèrent donc la malheureuse expédition martiniquaise du 23 juin 1635 (un des vieux documents dit également le 25). Unmois auparavant, tout ce monde s’embarqua sur deux navires, dans le port de Dieppe, le 25 mai 1635. D’Aubigné repartira un plus tard (en 1636) à Saint-Christophe. »Françoise d'Aubigné passera ses premiers mois chez Madame de Villette, sa tante protestante, parente de Constant d’Aubigné, au château de Mursay, au nord de Niort. Son père sortira de la prison de Niort, après la mort du cardinal de Richelieu.Constant d’Aubigné n’aurait emmené sa famille en Martinique que quelque mois plus tard en 1637, lorsque Françoise atteint ses dix-huit mois. En 1645, il fut agréé par la compagnie des Iles de l'Amérique afin de s'installer à Marie-Galante, dépendance de la Guadeloupe, avec «commission de gouverner pour trois ans et assurance pour trois autres ». Françoise a alors dix ans. Cependant Constant d’Aubigné semble poursuivi par une mauvaise étoile et doitrentrer en France dès 1647, avec son épouse et ses trois enfants. Il meurt le 31 août 1647 après avoir cherché refuge auprès de ses amis protestants.Jeanne de Cardilhac, désormais seule, confie ses enfants à des parents proches. Françoise retourne chez sa tante protestante, Mme de Villette. Mme de Neuillant, parente de Mme Cardilhac, mécontente de la conversion de sa nièce au protestantisme, demande un ordre de la Reine-Mère Anne d’Autriche afin de prendre en charge l’éducation de Françoise qui se retrouve dans le couvent des Ursulines de Niort. Puis, en raison d’une forte résistance à la religion catholique, Françoise d’Aubigné est confiée aux religieuses Ursulines de la rue Saint-Jacques, à Paris qui obtiennent finalement son adhésion au catholicisme.A l’âge de dix-sept ans, afin de préserver son honneur, elle doit choisir entre mariage et couvent. Françoise choisit le mariage avec Paul Scarron, pamphlétiste, poète, écrivain, hôte de salons littéraires très appréciés par la « société élégante » parisienne. Ce dernier décède huit ans plus tard. Nous sommes alors en 1660. Françoise d’Aubigné, connue sous le surnom de la « belle indienne » est devenue la veuve Scarron, une femme désargentée mais munie d’uncarnet de relations telles que Anne d’Autriche et Mme de Montespan, maitresse favorite du roi Louis XIV. Arthur de Boislisle (1835-1908), historien la décrit ainsi dans son livre Paul Scarron Et Françoise d'Aubigné: D'Après Des Documents Nouveaux (1894) :« Veuve à vingt-cinq ans ; belle, spirituelle, vertueuse par vanité ; belle taille avec dignité, noblesse d'action, regards majestueux ; visage ovale d'un tour admirable, beau teint, grands yeux noirs vifs, nez aquilin, bouche grande, belles dents, lèvres vermeilles bien bordées, sourire charmant, mains et bras bien taillés, beau port, physionomie fine; conversation délicate, quelquefois badine; âme grande, esprit juste, cœur droit ; tendre, franche, bonne amie, magnanime ; toujours modeste, cachant avec soin une belle gorge. »Dès lors, Mme Veuve Scarron gravit les échelons, devient gouvernante, en 1669, des enfants de Mme de Montespan, puis rivale de cette dernière en prenant la position de maîtresse du roi Louis XIV. Un chemin parcouru inattendu qui fera d’elle une femme autant crainte que haïe par l’entourage du Roi Soleil.En 1674, Françoise d’Aubigné acquiert pour 240 000 livres le château de Maintenon ainsi que le titre de Marquise de Maintenon des mains de Charles François d'Angennes (1648-1691), marquis de Maintenon. Dans une parenthèse, on notera d’ailleurs les liens étroits de ce dernier avec la Martinique et les similarités de parcours avec Constant d’Aubigné. En premier lieu corsaire et négociant d’esclaves, il est nommé Gouverneur de Marie-Galante en 1679,poste brigué par le père de Françoise d’Aubigné, mais qu’il ne tient que durant quelques mois. Ayant épousé Catherine Giraud, fille de Pierre Giraud du Poyet, il préfère s’installer sur la plantation de la Montagne, à Saint Pierre, en Martinique dont son épouse possédait une petite partie et qu’il acquiert entièrement en 1679.Après le décès de Marie Thérèse d’Autriche et le discrédit de Mme de Montespan dans l’affaire des poisons, Louis XIV et la marquise de Maintenon se marient dans la Chapelle du Château de Versailles, dans la nuit du 9 au 10 octobre 1683. Un mariage des plus secrets qui lui vaudra le titre de « presque Reine », puisqu’elle n’en portera pas le titre et qui scellera l’influence austère de Mme de Maintenon sur son époux monarque mais qui lui assurera les critiques et les haines les plus virulentes de son vivant et également de façon posthume.Entre 1830 et 1850, les écrits de Saint-Simon et de Madame Palatine accusent Mme de Maintenon d’avoir soutenu la révocation de l’Édit de Nantes. Pourtant, la famille d’Aubigné est huguenote et Mme de Maintenon, elle-même s’acharnera à la sauver des persécutions entreprises sur les protestants. D’autre part, la caisse de conversion qui distribue des récompenses et des faveurs pour ramener les protestants dans le « droit chemin » du catholicisme a été fondée en 1674, année où Mme de Maintenon est encore confrontée aux multiples maitresses de Louis XIV, sans oublier son épouse, Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche.En septembre 1687, elle écrit : « Je suis indignée contre de pareilles conversions : l’état de ceux qui abjurent sans être véritablement catholiques est infâme. » Dans les Mémoires des Dames de Saint-Cyr, on trouve la déclaration suivante : « Mme de Maintenon, en désirant de tout son cœur la réunion des huguenots à l’Église, aurait voulu que ce fût plutôt par la voie de la persuasion et de la douceur que par la rigueur ; et elle nous a dit que le roi, qui avait beaucoup de zèle, aurait voulu la voir plus animée qu’elle ne lui paraissait, et lui disait, à cause de cela : « Je crains, madame, que le ménagement que vous voudriez que l’on eût pour les huguenots ne vienne de quelque reste de prévention pour votre ancienne religion. » Dans une lettre adressée à Fénelon, elle signale sa crainte des médisances de ses ennemis :«  Je gémis, des vexations qu’on fait ; mais, pour peu que j’ouvrisse la bouche pour m’en plaindre, mes ennemis m’accuseraient encore d’être protestante, et tout le bien que je pourrais faire serait anéanti. »Quant au Code Noir effectivement promulgué en 1685, après la mort de Colbert, la rédaction finale s’est construite sur une vaste consultation préalable incluant le comte de Blénac, gouverneur des Antilles, et Jean-Baptiste Patoulet, intendant des îles, qui eux-mêmes se sont chargés de recueillir les avis des notables et des membres des «conseils souverains» de la Martinique, de la Guadeloupe et de Saint-Christophe.Il est vrai que Mme de Maintenon a eu des esclavagistes parmi ses fréquentations, mais l’esclavage n’existait pas en France et tout esclave était supposé devenir libre dès qu’il touchait la terre française.Par ailleurs, Mme de Maintenon se rendait, au couvent de Muret, rendre visite à la Mauresse de Moret, Louise-Marie de Sainte-Thérèse, fille cachée supposée de Louis XIV, histoire que nous avons publiée précédemment :https://construire-ensemble.org/index.php/2021/04/24/la-mauresse-de-moret/ et sujet sur lequel le philosophe Voltaire écrit l’anecdote suivante en parlant de Mme de Maintenon : « et voulant inspirer plus de modestie à cette religieuse, elle fit ce qu’elle put pour lui ôter l’idée qui nourrissait sa fierté. "Madame, lui dit cette personne, la peine que prend une dame de votre élévation, de venir exprès ici me dire que je ne suis pas fille du roi, me persuade que je le suis." »Ceci suggère une relation entre ces deux femmes bien loin des réalités de l’esclavage. La marquise de Maintenon meurt le 15 avril 1519 dans la Maison Royale de Saint-Louis, à Saint Cyr.Mais même après sa mort, on ne lui accorde le repos qu’en 1969 (voir la note en bas du texte). Les paragraphes précédents, que ce soit sur la révocation de l’Edit de Nantes, le Code Noir et l’esclavage ne justifient en rien « la voix faible » de Mme de Maintenon au regard des décisions politiques de l’époque, mais considèrent la nécessité d’une relativisation des propos critiques en tenant compte du fait qu’elle était reine dans la sphère privée et à la Cour Royale, mais jamais au delà. La Marquise de Maintenon écrit elle-même à la princesse des Ursins : « Je ne me mêle pas d' affaires, Madame ; je ne suis presque jamais entre le roi et ses ministres quand ils travaillent chez moi; croyez que je vous dis la vérité… » Note : (source inconnue) Madame de Maintenon est d'abord enterrée dans l'allée centrale de l'église de la Maison Royale de Saint-Louis. En 1794 — la Maison royale devenue un hôpital militaire — divers travaux sont effectués dans l'église désaffectée. Sur une dalle noire qui n’est plus celle placée lors de l’enterrement on lit cette phrase : « La tombe de Madame de Maintenon, favorite d'un Roi ». La dalle est brisée, le cercueil de chêne est abîmé et ouvert ; le corps parfaitement conservé est extirpé pour être exposé aux insultes de la foule. Un jeune officier réussit, au cours de la nuit à enterrer le corps dans un jardin. En 1805, le général Dutheil ordonne la destruction du tombeau de « la fanatique qui avait fait révoquer l'édit de Nantes ». Les restes placés dans un « coffre d'emballage » sont oubliés dans le débarras de l'économat de Saint-Cyr. Durant les travaux de reconstruction après la seconde guerre mondiale, on découvre, dans les greniers de Saint-Cyr, une caisse marquée « ossements de Madame de Maintenon ». FESTIVAL D’ANJOU

Actuellement en Anjou jusqu’au 29 juin 

Nous fêtons cette année la 70ème édition du Festival d’Anjou. Nous allons célébrer un des plus vieux rendez vous théâtral de France de la plus belle manière qui soit. D’abord en donnant carte blanche à Nicolas Briançon, pour sa dernière édition en tant que directeur artistique. Outre la pléiade de grands acteurs qui vont fouler les planches du Plessis Macé, du Cloître Toussaint, de Fontevraud, des Arènes de Doué-en-Anjou du château de Saumur et du Théâtre St-Louis de Cholet, nous ouvrirons cette 70ème édition avec Jacques et son Maître de Milan Kundera, la dernière création de Nicolas Briançon. Cette pièce lui a valu sa première nomination aux Molières, il y a une vingtaine d’années. Merci Nicolas pour ces 16 années de bonheur à la tête du Festival d’Anjou : tu as su, avec intelligence, enthousiasme et talent, faire grandir ce festival. Ensuite, nous accueillons Jean RobertCharrier, associé dès cette année à la programmation artistique, dans le cadre du concours des compagnies. L’organisation de cette collaboration montre toute l’importance que nous portons à transmettre sereinement le flambeau artistique pour que le festival continue de grandir et se réinventer. Aboard the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier

Charles de Gaulle is the flagship of the French Navy (Marine Nationale) and the largest western European warship currently in commission. She is the tenth French aircraft carrier, the first French nuclear-powered surface vessel, and the first and so far only nuclear-powered carrier completed outside of the United States Navy. She is named after French statesman and general Charles de Gaulle.

The ship carries a complement of Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard, Dassault Rafale M and E‑2C Hawkeye aircraft, EC725 Caracal and AS532 Cougar helicopter for combat search and rescue, as well as modern electronics and Aster missiles. She is a CATOBAR-type carrier that uses two 75 m C13‑3 steam catapults of a shorter version of the catapult system installed on the U.S. Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, one catapult at the bow and one across the front of the landing area.  Thanks to her characteristics, Charles de Gaulle is the only non-American carrier-vessel in the world able to operate American aircraft such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet   or C-2 Greyhound,  which operate from American carrier-vessels.

Construction 

The carrier replaced Foch, a conventionally powered aircraft carrier, in 2001. Clemenceau and Foch were completed in 1961 and 1963 respectively; the requirement for a replacement was identified in the mid-1970s.

The hull was laid down in April 1989 at the DCNS Brest naval shipyard. The carrier was launched in May 1994 and at 35,500 tonnes was the largest warship launched in Western Europe since HMS Ark Royal in 1950. She was to be named Richelieu in 1986 by the French president at the time, François Mitterrand, after the famous French politician Armand-Jean du Plessis, Cardinal or the Duc de Richelieu.  On 7 February 1987. However, the name of the ship was changed to Charles de Gaulle by the Gaullist Prime Minister at the time, Jacques Chirac.

Construction quickly fell behind schedule as the project was starved of funding, which was worsened by the economic recession in the early 1990s. Total costs for the vessel would top €3 billion. Work on the ship was suspended altogether on four occasions: 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1995. The ship was commissioned on 18 May 2001, five years behind the projected deadline.

In 1993, it was alleged by The Guardian that a group of engineers inspecting the vessel during her construction were British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) operatives, believed to have been learning the method of shielding the nuclear reactors, amongst other technical details. However, the newspaper published a denial by both the British government and the Direction de la surveillance du territoire (DST) (in English: Directorate of Territorial Surveillance) that there had been any incident.

On 16 September 2001 the French press reported slightly higher than acceptable radioactivity levels aboard Charles de Gaulle, thought to be caused by a faulty isolation element. It was later discovered that the radioactivity levels matched the design, but that the regulations concerning acceptable radioactivity levels had changed. While the United States was preparing its response to the September 11 attacks in the form of Operation Enduring Freedom, French media complained about the lack of deployable French military power. At the same time, the Defence Commission reported the maintenance of the Fleet to be substandard. In this context, Charles de Gaulle, then under repairs, was again an object of criticism, with former President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing describing it as a "half-aircraft-carrier" and requesting launching of the second carrier vessel (named PA2) in order to guarantee an availability rate of 100%.

FNB UJ schooled as FNB Tuks hand them a rugby lesson

FNB UJ succumbed to their second defeat in as many games as they were outplayed and outclassed by their Gauteng rivals FNB UP-Tuks in the 2019 Varsity Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

Due to load shedding which hit the Johannesburg Stadium on Monday, the Gauteng derby was abandoned, and the fixture played out on Tuesday afternoon. With the match being played behind closed doors, the Orange Army were without their partisan crowd.

The game started at a frantic pace, and it was FNB UJ that got out of the blocks first with sustained pressure. However, the home side couldn’t put any points on the board, and FNB UP-Tuks grew into the game. They were duly rewarded as Wian Van Niekerk scored a lekker FNB UP Tuks try that came after a series of phases, which eventually saw them touchdown. Tinus De Beer made no mistake with the penalty and it was 7-0 after 10 minutes.

The home side got their first points of the game with Jeanluc Cilliers scoring a penalty. FNB UJ were knocking hard on the door and it eventually opened as FNB UJ lock Khanya Ncusane scored a well worked try and flyhalf Jeanluc Cilliers made no mistake with the conversion on the stroke of halftime

But the side from Pretoria were not to be undone and following a ruthless maul from FNB UP-Tuks which saw them gain some ground, forward Frederick Potgieter latched on to a superb pass and scored a try on the cusp of halftime. Tinus De Beer scores the resulting penalty and FNB UP-Tuks went into halftime with a 14-10 lead.

The match was perfectly poised for a FNB UJ comeback however FNB UP-Tuks were just too composed and powered through against the run of play courtesy of a well-orchestrated try by substitute Johanes Eloff and FNB UP-Tuks were 21-10 ahead after 50 minutes.

The game went from bad to worse for the home side as FNB UP-Tuks we’re having a ball with the ball, which eventually saw centre Enrich Cronje score and the team from Pretoria were running away with it at 28-10.

The three-time champions were playing some dazzling rugby and were blowing FNB UJ away in their own backyard. Frederick Potgieter this time was on a brace as he scored and Tinus De Beer, made the conversion and the game was getting embarrassingly bad for FNB UJ with the score at 35-10.

The mercurial Tinus De Beer then got a try of his own and the score was slowly moving to a big one, nearing half a century. With just 10 minutes remaining FNB UJ were trailing 40-10 in a totally dominant second half performance by their peers. But FNB UJ managed to score a consolation try as fullback Odwa Nkunjana put a little bit of respect on the scoreboard to make it 40-19.

FNB UP-Tuks were guilty of complacency towards the end but held on for an emphatic 40-19.

Final Major Project -  Week 1

The first week for my Final Major Project was trickier than I anticipated. 

Tuesday involved me making sure my project proposal was done correctly before i decided to hand it in. This was because the week before i was advised upon my proposal and it didn’t make a whole lot of sense before. So insted of having a broad idea being ‘What s Good Art?’ I instead focussed on what i was talking about and improved on what I wrote to be more specific on my topic, eventually going from ‘What makes an Art Style good?’ to ‘Art Styles: A Commentary’ to finally ‘Evolution of a Drawing Style’ I think this better suited my aim.

Then on Wednesday, I conducted primary research on drawing styles through the ages which I gained from the National Gallery. It was quite insightful into what artists used their art for and the reason behind it. For instance some artists were hired to create paintings of public figures while others were tasked to create religious paintings and others detailed the daily lives of ordinary people. This would then help me to understand how i would want to portray different styles in my FMP. I was very glad I found art pieces that were not completed too becuase it meant i could understand the process behind the style.

As for Thrusday, it did not go as i had planned. The point of this day was to go to the UAL Peckham Road Library to find and research two books that would relate to my idea. Unfortunately, the first book I tired ti find was no where to be found and when i found the second book called ‘Toy Story: The Art and Making of an Animated Film’ it didn’t suit well with the theme i was trying to construct though my research. This set back my research a bit so decided to begin creating various mood boards for my FMP.

As for Friday, while having research with me I began to finish the narrowing down of my idea effectively making sure that my ‘Drawing style’ is visually showed to be my main idea I stuck with and will continue to stick too. Then after my studio hours I headed to the V&A, the Victoria and Albert Museum, to gain more knowledge and research on the many different drawing styles cultures around the world have which were sometimes specific to an era in their past. It really helped me gain information on other drawing styles not specific to Western European hyper realistic paintings.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Global miner Rio Tinto (RIO.AX)(RIO.L) signaled on Monday it will stick with its “value over volume” strategy, outlining further moves to boost shareholder returns and appointing a new chairman from within its board.

Rio ended months of speculation by naming Simon Thompson to succeed chairman Jan du Plessis, who will step down after almost nine years at the helm of the Anglo-Australian mining house.

Thompson, a former investment banker and senior executive with Anglo American (AAL.L), and the chairman of Rio’s remuneration committee, will take on the new role on March 5, 2018.

The appointment follows a flurry of speculation that Rio might turn to former Xstrata chief Mick Davis, renowned as an astute dealmaker, to take over from du Plessis who is moving to chair British telecom BT Group (BT.L).

“Thompson is well-versed in the Rio Tinto culture, which was very different to that of Xstrata,” said a fund manager on the side of a Rio Tinto investment seminar in Sydney, who asked not to be named.

“I’d expect this to be received positively by the market and investors,” he added.

Rio Tinto, which is expected to boost revenue by about 15 percent in 2017 to $39 billion, according to Thomson Reuters forecast data, has focused on driving down costs at its iron ore, copper and other businesses in a bid to boost returns to shareholders amid volatile commodity markets.

“Rio Tinto is in a strong position. Our value over volume strategy is working,” Chief Executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques told investors at a briefing on Monday.

Jacques said Rio would hold the line with its current strategy with the appointment of Thompson.

“This is by no means a structural shift for us,” Jacques told Reuters. “With Simon, we are continuing on the same successful course we have already laid out to our shareholders for maximizing our operations and growth.”

FOCUS ON RETURNS

Rio Tinto on Monday also reduced its forecast for capital expenditure, putting 2017 capex at less than $4.5 billion from an earlier forecast of $5 billion, as it focuses on boosting shareholder returns.

The company said that it will deliver additional free cash flow of $1.5 billion a year from 2021, following on from its drive to boost free cash flow by $5 billion over 2017 to 2021.

However, it pointed to a possible slowing in China over the next six months, with a weakening in construction, infrastructure and automotive demand growth. Rio said it remains optimistic about China in the medium to long term.

The miner expected to ship 330 million to 340 million tonnes of iron ore from its Pillar operations in 2018, slightly ahead of its forecast of 330 million tonnes for this year.

Shares of Rio Tinto rose 1.2 percent by early afternoon in a flat broader market .

Depuis deux semaines, son auteur, Bernard Laporte, est confronté à de nouvelles « petites histoires », qui fragilisent cette fois fortement sa position à la présidence de la Fédération française de rugby (FFR).

« Je n’ai rien dissimulé. (…) Tout est légal »

Au cœur de la mêlée, l’ancien entraîneur de Toulon a pris le temps avant de répliquer. « Je n’ai rien dissimulé. (…) Tout est légal », a-t-il assuré dans un entretien au Parisien, mis en ligne dans la soirée du mardi 29 août. Le nouveau président de la FFR, élu en décembre 2016, est soupçonné d’avoir favorisé le club de Montpellier alors qu’il entretenait des relations d’affaires avec son président.

La veille, la « fédé » a déjà tenté de « restaurer (…) la confiance » : elle a annoncé la rupture immédiate du contrat d’image conclu en février entre Bernard Laporte et le président de la formation héraultaise, Mohed Altrad. En tant que dirigeant de la société BL Communication, Bernard Laporte devait toucher 150 000 euros pour animer quatre conférences ou séminaires, selon les révélations publiées le 13 août par Le Journal du dimanche : des interventions prévues dans les mois à venir pour le groupe Altrad Investment Authority, qui fabrique du matériel pour le secteur du bâtiment.

Quatre démissions à la suite

Le 27 août, toujours dans Le JDD, un témoignage a ajouté au trouble : Bernard Laporte aurait sollicité la commission d’appel de la FFR pour qu’elle se prononce « dans un sens beaucoup plus favorable à Montpellier », selon Philippe Peyramaure, « avisé » d’une supposée intervention. Représentant de la Ligue nationale de rugby (LNR) au sein de ladite commission, l’avocat parisien a présenté sa démission en guise de protestation.

Parmi les treize membres de la commission d’appel, trois autres démissions ont suivi en l’espace de deux jours : celles de Benjamin Peyrelevade, Julien Bérengeret et Vincent Chaumet-Riffaud. Trois départs qui affaiblissent d’autant la fédération.

Au centre des questions ? Le fait que la commission d’appel a allégé, à la fin du mois de juin, des sanctions prises par la commission de discipline de la LNR pour divers dossiers : une histoire de banderoles de supporteurs ainsi que les suspensions de deux joueurs montpelliérains, les frères Du Plessis, Jacques et Jannie.

Bernard Laporte reconnaît avoir appelé au préalable le président de la commission d’appel, Jean-Daniel Simonet. « Dans le respect de [son] indépendance », précise-t-il au Parisien. Un peu plus tôt, par communiqué, M. Simonet assurait aussi avoir agi de façon « conforme à la  jurisprudence » et démentait avoir fait l’objet de pressions.

La ministre des sports attend avant de se prononcer

Le patron du rugby tricolore a été sélectionneur du XV de France puis secrétaire d’Etat aux sports sous le gouvernement Fillon (2007-2009). Restera-t-il à la FFR jusqu’au terme de son mandat de quatre ans ? A la hâte, la fédération a proposé la création d’une « haute autorité de lutte pour la transparence et l’équité dans le rugby ».

Mardi, la nouvelle ministre des sports, Laura Flessel, se donnait encore « quelques jours » avant de se prononcer. A propos de la campagne pour l’organisation de la Coupe du monde 2023, « la candidature se fera avec ou sans Bernard Laporte », a-t-elle insisté sur BFM-Sports. La Fédération internationale de rugby élira le pays hôte, le 15 novembre, entre l’Afrique du Sud, l’Irlande ou la France.

Là aussi, la partie se complique : parmi ses principaux sponsors, le dossier français compte le groupe Altrad, qui restait silencieux mardi. Un sponsor dont le nom s’est aussi installé sur le maillot du XV de France, qui était resté immaculé jusqu’en mars 2017.

Stormers pick Etzebeth for Sharks face-off

Cape Town – Stormers coach Robbie Fleck has made three changes to his starting line-up for their Super Rugby clash against the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 17:15.

Lock Eben Etzebeth, scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies and centre Dan du Plessis will all make their first starts of the season in the coastal derby at Kings Park.

Etzebeth’s inclusion in the second row is the only change to the starting forward pack following their 19-17 win over the Lions last weekend, while fit-again prop Wilco Louw has been included among the replacements.

Jantjies replaces the injured Jano Vermaak and as a result Justin Phillips will provide scrumhalf cover, with Ruhan Nel and Dillyn Leyds alongside him on the replacements bench.

Fleck said that his team are under no illusions about the challenge that awaits them in Durban.

“We know that we will have to be sharp in every area if we are to get the result we want in Durban.

“Our focus is on being as accurate as possible so that we are able to impose ourselves and our plans on the opposition,” he said.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Global miner Rio Tinto (RIO.AX)(RIO.L) signaled on Monday it will stick with its “value over volume” strategy, outlining further moves to boost shareholder returns and appointing a new chairman from within its board.

Rio ended months of speculation by naming Simon Thompson to succeed chairman Jan du Plessis, who will step down after almost nine years at the helm of the Anglo-Australian mining house.

Thompson, a former investment banker and senior executive with Anglo American (AAL.L), and the chairman of Rio’s remuneration committee, will take on the new role on March 5, 2018.

The appointment follows a flurry of speculation that Rio might turn to former Xstrata chief Mick Davis, renowned as an astute dealmaker, to take over from du Plessis who is moving to chair British telecom BT Group (BT.L).

“Thompson is well-versed in the Rio Tinto culture, which was very different to that of Xstrata,” said a fund manager on the side of a Rio Tinto investment seminar in Sydney, who asked not to be named.

“I’d expect this to be received positively by the market and investors,” he added.

Rio Tinto, which is expected to boost revenue by about 15 percent in 2017 to $39 billion, according to Thomson Reuters forecast data, has focused on driving down costs at its iron ore, copper and other businesses in a bid to boost returns to shareholders amid volatile commodity markets.

“Rio Tinto is in a strong position. Our value over volume strategy is working,” Chief Executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques told investors at a briefing on Monday.

Jacques said Rio would hold the line with its current strategy with the appointment of Thompson.

“This is by no means a structural shift for us,” Jacques told Reuters. “With Simon, we are continuing on the same successful course we have already laid out to our shareholders for maximizing our operations and growth.”

FOCUS ON RETURNS

Rio Tinto on Monday also reduced its forecast for capital expenditure, putting 2017 capex at less than $4.5 billion from an earlier forecast of $5 billion, as it focuses on boosting shareholder returns.

The company said that it will deliver additional free cash flow of $1.5 billion a year from 2021, following on from its drive to boost free cash flow by $5 billion over 2017 to 2021.

However, it pointed to a possible slowing in China over the next six months, with a weakening in construction, infrastructure and automotive demand growth. Rio said it remains optimistic about China in the medium to long term.

The miner expected to ship 330 million to 340 million tonnes of iron ore from its Pillar operations in 2018, slightly ahead of its forecast of 330 million tonnes for this year.

Shares of Rio Tinto rose 1.2 percent by early afternoon in a flat broader market .
