Nope: Jean Jacket is An Angel (SPOILERS)

As my Ricky theory was wrong, thought of a new one after watching Nope for the first time. It is on the UFO itself. Nicknamed Jean Jacket.

Nope is Jordan Peele's latest horror film about siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood struggling to keep their ranch from going under after their father is killed in a seeming freak accident. When they begin to notice that there appeared to be an unidentified flying object going around, they decide that taking an "Oprah shot" of it will give them great publicity.

The UFO first appears to be the generic alien spacecraft that you'd see in a B-movie. However, the film reveals that the UFO, christened Jean Jacket, is actually the extraterrestrial being who is an apex predator that consumes whatever it sucks up rather than traditionally abducting people in alien invasion films. There is no explanation of where Jean Jacket came from, but I believe that there is some reason to believe that the UFO is actually an angel.

The movie has several biblical themes and allusions such as quoting the Book of Nahum 3:6 about making the person into a horrific spectacle. OJ himself also asks what accounts for a "bad miracle."

But the most compelling piece of evidence for why I think Jean Jacket is an angel comes from the Book of Ezekiel itself often being the go-to for ancient alien enthusiasts by introducing the Wheels, or Ophanims, multi-eyed inter-looping wheels that carry the Throne of God. Jean Jacket's first form would match the "circular" shape of the Wheels. As angels are often represented with wings, Jean Jacket's true form appears to have wing-like appendages and the square eye could reference the eyes of an Ophanim.

So, if the UFO/Jean Jacket is an angel, why is it on Earth? Going back to Nahum 3 about making mankind vile, I take that as meaning that God, according to this film, has lost favor with mankind and is now going to cleanse the Earth of its filth. Ergo, Jean Jacket's whole purpose before being stopped is eradicating mankind.

I don't think that Jeanjacket sees humans as food exclusively.

The movie, while focusing on the themes of animals that are unable to be tamed (natural predators), also heavily leans into the fact that animals need to be treated with respect.

It's like how OJ is with the horses-- when he's around them, he accommodates their needs. He works with them, making sure that they're kept comfortable. When Lucky spooks at the beginning thanks to seeing his reflection, OJ knew the whole time that the horse was uncomfortable, and was trying to catch anyone's attention to point out the problem.

Moving further, when we meet Jupe, it's shown pretty quickly that while he talks of the Gordy incident in a light fashion, he's haunted by what happened that day. Gordy, in his mind, was a costar and coworker-- when in actuality, he was just an animal. An intelligent one, sure, but an animal regardless.

This was the beginning of the end for him. His survival, alongside the denim shoe, were both down to random chance, yet he took it as affirmation that he was special in the eyes of the universe. Or, to phrase it in a way that connects with the film, in the eyes of an unknown audience.

Now, lemme get back to the actual point I'm trying to make here. The movie shows that animals can be understood. OJ understands his horses, and later, Jeanjacket, when she first appears. He learns her rules, abides by them, and as a direct result of that, he survives.

Logistically, Jeanjacket preying on humans just by nature doesn't check out. From what we see of her, she makes no special effort to consume humans specifically, until she's wronged by them. The hikers she's implied to have eaten were most likely just victims of her hunger (an unlucky exception to the rule, which can sometimes be seen in nature when humans are attacked by starved predators)-- but when she's given the decoy horse, it upsets her.

As an intelligent creature would, she retaliates. Not out of malice, or out of pent-up anger, or out of a specific desire to feed-- she's hurt. Your example of a bear attacking salmon is an easy conclusion to draw, but this instance is more along the lines of a bear attacking a human. Sure, it happens, but it's not as though bears prey only on humans, and when they do, it's in an attempt to protect any food, space, or young they may have. I grew up in a rural area, saw many bears, and made sure to respect their rules-- and I think that furthers my point.

You don't approach a bear with the intent to make it your friend. You don't look it in the eye, you don't aggravate it, you keep your distance-- unless it approaches, in which case you make yourself something other than prey. Something that it won't want to fuck with.

Jeanjacket isn't a creature that sees humans as food. They're just another animal that inhabit the same general spaces she does, unless they hurt her or disregard her boundaries. She feeds on horses, and most likely whatever other animals she can find out in the wild when she's not resting-- she wants nothing to do with humans. It's implied that she's been a resident of the Haywood farm only since Jupe started luring in for visits with horses, and furthermore, she doesn't even give a shit about him.

When she's done eating, she fucks off.

She doesn't want to stay near him, she wants to go back to her newly established territory where she's deemed it safe.

After being disrespected and betrayed by what she thought was familiar (humans offering her a horse), she lashes out. Moving back to bears (you mentioned them in the ask and I'm just hinging on it now), it's a big problem when bears start getting too comfortable near humans. Once their fear is lost, they can become aggressive, and oftentimes have to be put down thanks to causing trouble in populated areas, all thanks to people being irresponsible and feeding them.

This is pretty damn close to what happened to Jeanjacket.

She was lured in with food, became overly comfortable, was inconvenienced, and fought back. She's smart enough to remember what hurt her, the location of it, and what species those who hurt her belonged to. Acting as a wild animal (due to. being. a wild animal.), she's suddenly hyper in-tune with what the humans around her are up to. They're looking at her, and while that wasn't that much of a threat to her (or a threat at All), now, it suddenly comes across as something aggressive.

While I understand the point you're trying to make with bears eating salmon, regardless of aggressive behavior exhibited, Jeanjacket had to be provoked into attacking. Back onto bears again. Even when removing the overfamiliarity aspect, eye contact is still something you avoid. For many animals, it's a challenge, and for Jeanjacket? That makes sense. As I said in my previous Nope post, with her anatomy, it's obvious as to why direct eye-contact would be a massive middle finger held in her face-- and even when disregarding the overfamiliarity that Jupe created by feeding her, if a predator animal is in a bad enough mood and you decide to lock eyes with it?

It's curtains.

This also goes without mentioning how the movie as a whole functions as a metaphor for the destructive nature of spectacle, and that's not something I'm about to unpack (because this post is Long Enough Already), but I am going to leave off with this.

A bear doesn't eat salmon out of cruelty, or anger. It eats them because that's what it has to do in order to survive, and when a bear attacks a human, it attacks because that is what it thinks it has to do in order to survive. Jeanjacket is the same way. She feeds on horses because they're in easy supply, and when she's threatened or challenged (the decoy horse and the direct eye-contact both being prime examples), when she's disrespected, she reacts accordingly.
