The all-new Jeep Commander – a three-row version of the Jeep Compass rumoured to be named the Jeep Meridian for the Indian market – has been revealed inside and out, with Jeep publishing a few images of its new three-row SUV that will take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The new SUV will go on sale in South America first, with the India launch expected in 2022, and a couple of near production-ready test mules of the Jeep Meridian were also recently spotted in India. Now, though, we have our clearest look yet at the Jeep Meridian SUV.
The Jeep Meridian’s face derives clear influence from Jeep's newest offerings such as the new-gen Grand Cherokee and the top-of-the-line Grand Wagoneer. It has the same square-jawed look with the flush seven-slot grille and angular LED headlights making for an imposing front end. The Meridian has a more upright shape compared to the Compass in order to accommodate the longer wheelbase and also has an extended rear overhang. Do note the tail section is completely new, and incorporates the slender LED tail-lights like seen on the Grand Wagoneer.
The Jeep Meridian carries forward the same interior layout as the facelifted Compass. However, the materials and themes used are different. The pictures show the leather inserts on the dash being replaced by a brown suede finish in the Meridian, while the brushed chrome finish seen on the Compass’ dash has been replaced by a copper finish. Also seen are brown leather seats featuring a quilted pattern, as well as open-pore wood trim on the dash and door panels.
While Jeep is yet to confirm the final specifications and features for the Meridian, some feature expected include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a panoramic sunroof as well as multi-zone automatic climate control. The test mules spotted in India had a six-seater captain configuration with second-row captain chairs, which are expected to also be power-adjustable.
Other features carried over from the 2021 Jeep Compass include the UConnect 5 infotainment system along with the 10.25-inch digital instruments display, auto headlights and wipers, electronic parking brake, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, eight-way adjustable front seats, an Alpine audio system, a powered tailgate, 360-degree cameras and more.
The seven-seat Jeep Meridian is expected to get the same engine options as the Compass – a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is expected to be offered in a significantly higher state of tune in the Meridian. Manual and automatic gearbox options will be available with both engine options, and all-wheel-drive will be on offer as well.
The Jeep Meridian is expected to arrive in India early in 2022 and is expected to be priced at a Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh premium over equivalent Compass variants. The new SUV, codenamed the H6, will be the third of four models Jeep has planned for India.

Ford closes German plant for 1 month as global chip crisis worsens
The US automaker said it would idle its factory in Saarlouis, Germany, from Monday until February 19 because of the chip shortage and weak demand. The plant makes Ford’s most popular car in Europe, the Focus, and employs around 5,000 workers.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and adjusting production schedules to minimize the effect on our employees, suppliers, customers and dealers across Europe,” said a Ford spokesman. “At this time, we do not anticipate any similar actions at our other European facilities.”
Ford (F) was forced to close a SUV plant in Louisville, Kentucky, last week because of the shortage of semiconductors. But the shutdown in Germany suggests the problem, which is affecting carmakers around the world, could get worse before it gets better.
Leading semiconductor manufacturers reassigned capacity from automakers last year after the pandemic slashed car sales, instead shipping chips to companies that produce smartphones, gaming systems and other tech gadgets that remained in high demand. Supplies are still tight, and carmakers are struggling to secure the chips they need.
Volkswagen (VLKAF), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Toyota (TM), Nissan (NSANF) and Honda (HMC) are among the other automakers suffering from the shortage of chips, which are used in a growing number of applications including driver assistance systems and navigation control. The average car has between 50 to 150 chips.
“Light vehicle manufacturers are finding increased disruption to the supply of systems using semiconductors in the first quarter,” Mark Fulthorpe, executive director for the automotive team at IHS Markit, said recently in a research note. “The situation is highly fluid.”
The disruption comes at a crucial time for carmakers, which suffered a collapse in sales in the early months of the pandemic, yet remain under intense pressure from global regulators to invest heavily in electric cars. Research firm Bernstein estimates global vehicle sales will grow 9% in 2021, following an expected 15% decline last year — but the chip shortage is putting the recovery at risk.
Volkswagen (VLKAF) said in a statement last month that it will need to adjust production at plants in China, North America and Europe this quarter. The changes will affect production of the bestselling VW Golf, as well as models from its Audi, Skoda and Seat brands.
According to UBS analysts, the world’s largest carmaker could lose out on production of 100,000 units in the first three months of the year, or roughly 4% of global quarterly output, as a result of the components shortages.
“We are doing everything in our power to minimize lost production and to ensure that normal deliveries to customers can be resumed as rapidly as possible,” Volkswagen Group purchasing manager Murat Aksel said in a statement last month.
Audi said Monday that it has furloughed 10,000 workers because of the chip shortage, with production and shift patterns affected at plants in Germany and Mexico. Production of the luxury brand’s A4 sedan and A5 cabriolet has been provisionally halted in Neckarsulm, Germany, through January 29.
“We are currently looking at a range of countermeasures and alternatives designed to mitigate the impact of the supply bottleneck and, in turn, minimize the number of vehicles affected,” a spokesperson said. “Any improvement largely depends on the semiconductor industry.”
In an interview published on Sunday by the Financial Times, CEO Markus Duesmann said Audi would try to limit production losses to 10,000 cars during the first quarter.
Fiat Chrysler said last week that it would delay the restart of production following a scheduled break at its Toluca, Mexico, plant, which builds the Jeep Compass. It has also scheduled downtime at its Canadian plant in Ontario, which produces the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger.
Japanese carmakers are also hurting. Toyota said it was forced to temporarily halt production at a plant in Guangzhou, China, on January 12, and it’s cutting production at a Texas factory that makes Tundra pickup trucks. Nissan and Honda have both said they’re “adjusting” production in response to the shortage.
South Korea’s Hyundai said in a statement on Monday that it’s “making effort to optimize supply of parts to ensure stable production at each production hub.”
German luxury brand BMW (BMWYY) said last week that it has not yet had to contend with interruptions to production but is in “constant contact” with its suppliers. General Motors (GM) and France’s Renault (RNLSY) have said they are working with suppliers to mitigate the impact on production, while Daimler (DDAIF)-owned Mercedes-Benz said it is “monitoring the situation.”
Chinese factories may be worst affected
Production levels in Europe, North America, Japan and India are expected to be hit this quarter, according to IHS. But the biggest problem could be in China.
“At this stage, with varying levels of visibility across the supply chain, the biggest volume disruption is noted in mainland China where, based on available information, the risk could be 250,000 units in the first quarter,” said Fulthorpe.
Chinese carmakers Brilliance Auto Group, SAIC Motor and Geely (GELYF), which owns Volvo, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a major supplier of chips, said last week that easing the shortage is its “top priority.” “We are working closely with our automotive customers to resolve the capacity support issues,” CEO C. C. Wei said at an investor conference on Thursday.

We at MotorTrend could probably print a thick special edition issue—or fire up a standalone website—featuring nothing but our Ford Bronco Sport coverage, so intense has public interest been in this bite-sized trail-bruiser. The only thing left to comment on now is how the compact crossover with the big name compares against its competitive set. We’ve pitted a top-spec four-cylinder Bronco Sport Badlands against its rival Jeep Compass Trailhawk, and soon we’ll gather a gaggle of less pricey, less capable compact utes for comparison with a more basic Bronco Sport. We just got the chance to slap our test gear on a well-equipped 2021 Bronco Sport Outer Banks model with the entry-level three-cylinder engine, so let’s start by bench-racing it against its competitive set.
How Quick Is the 2021 Bronco Sport Outer Banks?
Despite its cylinder count trailing that of nearly every competitor, the mainstream, three-cylinder Bronco Sport delivers solid mid-pack performance, dashing to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds and on through the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds at 84.5 mph. That is, if you venture into the setup screen to disable traction control, set the “GOAT mode” dial to Sport, give it a moment of brake torque to spool up the turbo, and release the brake to provoke a moment of front wheelspin. You only add a couple of tenths of a second and knock 1.5 mph off the trap speed for just mashing the pedal in Eco or Normal mode, as you might from a green light to jump out and get over to a turn lane.
Comparing all-wheel-drive utes of similar size and price (the Outer Banks trim starts at $33,655), we find the Honda CR-V in EX-L trim to be quickest at 7.6 seconds to 60 and 15.9 at 87.7 mph in the quarter, with the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder Jeeps bringing up the rear. Low-spec Cherokees with this engine align on price and take 9.5 seconds to hit 60; 17.2 for the quarter. The 2.4-liter Compass Trailhawk we ran against our Badlands model needed 10.4 and 17.7 seconds.
In the sibling rivalry category, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Bronco Sport Badlands whizzes to 60 in 6.5 seconds, besting our last Escape Titanium 2.0-liter by 0.4 seconds, though by the quarter-mile mark the Escape was pulling even (15.3 seconds for each) at a faster trap speed (89.3 versus Bronco Sport’s 87.8 mph). The only 1.5-liter Escape we’ve tested, a front-drive model weighing 266 pounds less than our Bronco Sport Outer Banks, was two tenths quicker to 60 mph (8.4 seconds) but gave up the same interval at the quarter mile (16.6 seconds at 84.5 mph).

How Well Does It Stop?
This particular Bronco Sport is kitted for optimal braking and turning, as the Outer Banks model gets the lineup’s only standard 18-inch wheel choice (they’re optional on Big Bend). They come wrapped in 225/60-series tires versus the rest of the lineup’s standard 225/65R17s. As such it whoas to a halt from 60 mph in a highly consistent 115 feet (just 3 feet separated our five panic stops). Among the competitive set we’re considering, only the Kia Sportage EX and Nissan Rogue Platinum brake shorter at 114 feet. It’s interesting to note that the Ford Escape SE 1.5 on 225/60R17 variants of the same tire model (Michelin Primacy A/S) needed 128 feet to stop, ranking it next to last in the class. Brake feel is also exemplary on the new Bronco Sport. The Badlands model on optional, knobbier, more off-road-oriented 235/65R17 Falken Wildpeak A/T tires needed 123 feet—same as our Escape Titanium on 225/55R19 Bridgestone Ecopias.

What About Cornering?
Here again we expect this example to be the fleetest handling Bronco Sport, owing to its grippier, lower-profile tires and its lighter and slightly better distributed weight. Sadly, our wintry week with the test vehicle in Michigan kept our skidpads damp or covered in snow the entire time. We sought out the flattest freeway cloverleafs we could find and measured grip in the 0.83–0.85g range, but they all still included at least a couple degrees of banking. This has to have increased our measured lateral-g result, probably by more than the ample coating of salt dust reduced it. Still, it’s safe to say that the result should be at least a bit better than that of our lighter Escape SE on the same model of taller-sidewall tires (which required more space to stop from 60 mph). An educated guess of 0.79g would put the Bronco Sport once again in the middle of its pack.

So What Do the Numbers Tell Us?
It’s possible that I, like many others, harbor an unconscious bias against three-banger engines. They sound funny, and like three-lug wheels, they just seem wrong, insufficient. The numbers suggest otherwise, slotting the entry Bronco Sport powertrain comfortably into the upper middle of its highly competitive class in terms of straight-line acceleration, and in the lower middle of the class for fuel economy. So don’t buy it based on either of these criteria; buy it because it looks cool, incorporates myriad surprise and delight features throughout, and because it’ll venture farther off the beaten path than most of the competitors we’re considering here.

All-New 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Is the Cool Little Brother

Just don’t call it a Bronco II.
It's a blessed day in Ford Bronco Land. Not only is the Ford Bronco back in a very big way, but the resurrection of the storied nameplate brings a new Bronco brand that the automaker claims will carry Ford's promise of future "Built Wild" 4x4 SUVs and trucks. For those who aren't interested in the Bronco proper—for size, price, or comfort reasons—the new Bronco brand brings us the compact 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, the first of hopefully many 4x4 Fords to wear the Bronco badge.
Confused? If the new full-size 2021 Ford Bronco is the Blue Oval's broadside blow at the Jeep Wrangler, think of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport as the second salvo aimed squarely at the Jeep Cherokee and smaller Compass, particularly the off-road focused Trailhawk variants of each. Despite the Bronco name and off-road branding, the Bronco Sport pulls much of its structure and mechanical guts from the more quotidian Ford Escape, sharing up to 80 percent of its whole with Ford's non-truck bread-and-butter.
2021 Ford Bronco Sport: Escape Bones With Better Skin, Starting Price Of $28,155
You wouldn't know that from comparing dimensions, however. Drape a tape measure over the two SUVs and you'll find the Bronco Sport is 7.8 inches shorter than the Escape, with part of that reduction coming from the 1.6 inches cut from the wheelbase. Conversely, the revised roof design—one not entirely dissimilar to the design found on the new Land Rover Defender—extends the Escape's roof by 4.2 inches. Cargo space is down ever so slightly compared to the Escape, but the new Bronco Sport manages 6 percent more passenger space.
Like the big Bronco, the Bronco Sport is available in a range of special trims, though the differences aren't nearly as extensive. Aside from the base Bronco Sport, the Big Bend trim adds additional equipment with requisite aesthetic touches, while the higher-tier Outer Banks adds more luxury and "sport" attitude. The range-topper is the Bronco Sport Badlands, also the most off-road capable of the Bronco Sport bunch. Like the regular Bronco, Ford will also offer a limited-production First Edition, with all of the best parts in one comprehensive package.
2021 Ford Bronco Sport: Tiny, Tough Turbos
Like the basic structure, the Bronco Sport's powertrains are sourced from the Escape, too. The standard engine is the familiar 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder, offering up 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque, a single horsepower and 13 lb-ft more than the Escape. The optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is down 5 hp compared to the Escape's 245 hp, but both rate the same stout 275 lb-ft of torque.
No matter which engine you pick, the Escape's eight-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duties, though Ford says the internal tuning is modified, as is the 1.5-liter's shorter axle ratio. You can't get the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport with anything other than all-wheel drive, and there are two distinct flavors of the system available; the range-topping Badlands rides on a more advanced torque-vectoring system than the rest of the Bronco Sport lineup.
2021 Ford Bronco Sport: Not Your Average Mall Crawler
Of course, a 4x4 SUV is more than its locking differentials, and we're happy to report the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport incorporates an upgraded suspension that includes Sport-specific control arms and knuckles that significantly increase suspension travel and track width when compared to the Escape, while special off-road tuned shocks should prove more durable and long-lasting over rough environments than traditional comfort-oriented street dampers. The electric power steering is fiddled with as well, now tethered to the many different terrain and driving modes available.
In keeping with the precedent set by the big Bronco, the available terrain modes are known as G.O.A.T. modes: Goes Over Any Terrain. All Bronco Sports arrive with Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, and Sand, while the trail-focused Badlands adds Rock Crawl and Mud/Ruts mode for sure-footedness over a greater variety of terrains. When toggled, the infotainment screen displays pertinent off-roading data points like tire pressures, corner-camera views, differential settings, and the status of the cruise-control-esque Trail Control that keeps the SUV trucking along trails at speeds of up to 20 mph.
If you do spring for the bad boy 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands model, the biggest upgrade you can expect is the all-wheel-drive system, now with a modified rear differential that can send up to 50 percent of available torque to either of the rear wheels. There's water-cooling for portions of the all-wheel-drive system, as opposed to air-cooling in lesser trims, and the suspension is reworked for an additional inch of ground clearance, for a total of 8.8-inches.
2021 Ford Bronco Sport: Ultimate Lifestyle Machine
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport isn't in the same league as the bigger Bronco, but that's just the way Ford designed it. The type of buyer the Blue Oval wants to court with the Bronco Sport is more interested in using their vehicle as a means to get to an activity, rather than the vehicle serving as the experience itself. In other words, Bronco Sport drivers are more likely to be rock climbers than rock crawlers, mountain bikers rather than dune hoppers, and would prefer to kayak down a stream versus fording it with their truck.
In this pursuit, the new Bronco Sport is bursting at the gills with lifestyle accessories. Standard roof rails provide opportunity for roof boxes, tents, or bikes, though you may want to belay that last one. Ford made sure the rear storage area is cavernous enough to fit two full-size mountain bikes, provided you fit your new SUV with the proper accessory. Most Bronco Sport models feature hose-down rubber floors, and you can option the seatbacks on the rear seats with the same grime-resistant material; it makes cleanup easier if your cargo tends to involve mud, dirt, or a bit of both. Those who take their dog(s) along on their trail runs will especially appreciate this feature.
Plus, there are little touches of utility strewn about the cabin to make a weekend in the woods that much more tolerable. On the seatbacks, Molle system straps are mounted to zippered storage compartments, and there's a hidden storage bin underneath the right rear seat. With the rear hatch open fully, integrated downward-facing lamps illuminate any tailgate gathering or activity, while a 12-volt socket and a 400-watt, 110-volt plug provide auxiliary power for gear like air pumps or electric fans. The rear storage area is accessible through the glass hatch, and has a pull-out false floor rated to support up to 50 pounds.
One of the coolest aspects of the return of the full-size 2021 Ford Bronco is its extensive catalog  of accessories available from launch, and thankfully the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is no different. According to Ford, more than 100 individual accessories will be available, including goodies like additional roof storage, tents, wheels, and lights.

Electric Fiat 500 Unveild Publicly In Milan Despite Coronavirus Scare

Fiat Chrysler defied fears over Italy's coronavirus outbreak to showcase an electric version of its 500 city car on Wednesday, as it strives to catch up with rivals in low-emissions driving while heading into a merger with Peugeot maker PSA. Initially planned for the now-cancelled Geneva Motor Show, the presentation was held at an event in Milan - a rarity as large gatherings have been discouraged by authorities in most of northern Italy, which has seen Europe's worst virus outbreak. With schools, universities and museums closed, and cafes forced to shut early for almost two weeks, the mood in Italy's financial capital is sombre, as it sits just 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the epicentre of the outbreak, where 11 towns are sealed from the outside world. "We're here to show that FCA is close to Milan and to Italy," Olivier Francois, head of the Fiat brand and Fiat Chrysler Automobile's (FCA) Chief Marketing Officer, told a restricted audience of journalists, before a press conference at Milan's design museum, where chairs were placed a metre apart to comply with local authority health requirements. "This car does not look at 2020, but to the next decade," he added.

Italy's government is set to close cinemas and theatres and ban public events across the whole country to try to contain the coronavirus outbreak, according to a draft decree drawn up on Wednesday. The death toll from the virus rose to 79 on Tuesday and total cases in the country topped 2,500. 'CINQUECENTO' The original 500 small car, launched in the late 1950s and known affectionately as the "Cinquecento", quickly become a symbol of Italian urban design. The new electric 500 (BEV), which is part of a plan announced in 2018 to invest 5 billion euros ($5.6 billion) in Italy up to 2021, is the group's first major step into electric-powered driving. FCA said the selling price for the cabrio launch version would be 37,900 euros in Italy, excluding government environmental incentives, though it added cheaper versions would follow. That compares with a starting price of 16,000 euros for a petrol-engine 500. Competing electric cars include the Mini Cooper SE with a starting price of 33,900 euros in Italy and Peugeot's e-208, starting at 33,600 euros. An early version of the electric 500 has been produced in the United States to comply with local authority rules on zero-emission cars. But in 2014 former CEO Sergio Marchionne asked customers not to buy that car as FCA was losing money on it, and said he hoped to sell the smallest number possible. With a range of 320 kilometres, the new 500 BEV will be a totally different car, six centimetres longer, six centimetres wider and two centimetres taller that the petrol-engine version. It will be produced at FCA's Mirafiori plant in Turin. Sales are expected to start in July, initially in Europe, with FCA hoping to sell 80,000 a year at full capacity. FCA plans to have 12 electrified vehicles in its fleet by 2021. That includes both hybrid and full electric vehicles, new cars and electrified versions of existing ones, and light commercial vehicles. The Italian-American automaker earlier this year started selling hybrid versions of the 500 and of its other small car, the Fiat Panda. The 2021 Kia Seltos is entering the small SUV segment with style, roominess and decent comfort features. The Seltos is Kia’s newest SUV, slotting between the boxy Soul and sleek Sportage. We recently drove from San Antonio to Houston and spent a long weekend in Kia’s stylish new SUV, learning some of the pros and cons it has to offer.
Pro: Bose Audio System
Although it’s only available in the top-trim SX, the eight-speaker Bose audio system sounds clear and crisp. This is the first time Kia equips a vehicle with a Bose system (the automaker used Harman Kardon in past models), and the sound is great for a subcompact crossover—it might battle the Nissan Kicks for the best-sound system in a cheap SUV.
Con: Interior Materials
Yes, the Kia Seltos is inexpensive, but the amount of hard plastics and poor materials are all around the cabin. That’s something normal for a $23,000 SUV, but when the top-trim’s price is closer to $30,000, some customers may expect better materials. The leatherette on the seats and door panels also could be better quality.
Pro: Electrochromic rear-view mirror
Although during our First Drive we drove during daylight hours, we didn’t have a chance to see some of the features the interior offers at night. I was surprised to see that the rear-view mirror in the SX is electrochromic, which dims the mirror when it senses light, preventing any kind of reflection from the headlights behind you. I drove a base Honda CR-V LX for one year and complained about the lack of a dimming rear-view mirror, so I was surprised to see that the Seltos SX has it.
Con: Powertrain
The Seltos is equipped with two powertrains—a 2.0-liter that delivers 146 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque and a 1.6-liter turbo that’s good for 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. Although neither powertrain is awful, the 2.0-liter feels slow and thrashy at full throttle, while the turbo is peppy but lacks refinement during stop and go traffic, primarily because of its dual-clutch transmission.
Pro: Space and Cargo Room
Despite its small size, the 2021 Kia Seltos is pretty spacious inside. Its square-ish shape allows back-seat passengers to have enough headroom, while there’s plenty of legroom for 6-feet adults. During the weekend, my dad (who is almost 6’4” and a big guy) had a bit of trouble when he sat in the rear seat, but for the average-size American, the interior is roomy. There’s also plenty of cargo room, and you can lower the cargo floor for more volume.
Con: Disco-like ambient lighting
Like the Soul, the top-trim Seltos is equipped with ambient lighting that changes color with the melody of the songs you’re playing, providing a lounge-like interior. But unlike the Soul, the ambient lighting isn’t as bright or as noticeable. When driving the Seltos at night, I had to look hard to see if the ambient lighting was on, and it was hard to see the colors change with the reggaeton songs I was playing. In contrast, the Soul’s interior turns into an Ibiza-style club.
Pro: MPG
Kia estimates the Seltos to deliver up to 34 mpg in highway for front-drive models with the 2.0-liter, which is better than what the Mazda CX-30, Nissan Rogue Sport, and Jeep Compass offer in front-drive form, and ties with the Honda HR-V. Getting all-wheel drive reduces the numbers by about 2 mpg, while the 1.6-liter turbo delivers 25/30/27 city/highway/combined mpg with AWD.
