The Day We Waited For: Aijamisespava Watches Junior Eurovision!
Believe it or not, I was originally not slated to watch Junior Eurovision this year. It landed on the same weekend that I would be home for Thanksgiving (because America), and I thought my family would have something planned. But they moved things around (and so did fate) and I ended up watching Junior Eurovision on my living room couch!
I will start by saying that all 16 performers did an excellent job and that they were all worthy winners. France deserved the win (and it was such a nailbiting end between France and Spain). And now, France has both matched Poland as one of the countries to go back to back (not to mention 3 wins in 4 years) AND has essentially become a JESC Superpower.
I had so much fun watching, and I am (mostly) happy with the results (my winner finished 2nd last...). Plus, my sister joined me and got to see the world of Eurovision too! While we both voted for Estonia, claiming it as our winners, she voted for Italy and Albania while I voted for the United Kingdom and Armenia.
So I guess that does it for the Junior Eurovision season! I'll be back part time next year when the songs start to come out again, and I look forward to it!
Congrats Zoé and France for winning today, and we look forward to seeing what comes up next year in...likely France!

Junior Eurovision Commentary 5: Guardians
It's 12 Points Time! I'm starting to think they're overlaying Canned Crowd over the normal crowd. As a reminder, I'm rooting for Malta, Germany and the Netherlands.
5 rounds of 12 points later, the country on top is France! Wasn't expecting me, or us, the UK, to do as well as we are.
Tumblr media
5:09pm - Roughly 10 rounds later, France is still leading, with UK in 3rd place! I'm starting to think giving Malta my only 7/7 was a bad idea.
Tumblr media
5:12pm - and with all 16 points given, France is leading, Armenia, the one I gave 3/7, is in 2nd and Spain is in 3rd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now it's time for the public, AKA MY votes. How good is my opinion? Well...
Tumblr media
Germany got 74 votes...
Tumblr media
Malta got 45...
Tumblr media
And the Netherlands got 70...
Tumblr media
And Armenia got public voted up to 2nd, So I have a horrible opinion apparently.
And the winner is.... ....France! (cor blimey they really dragged this out lul)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So there you have it, they struck gold in their conquest yet again with their Barbie theme. Who'd a thunk it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also means I am really out of touch with what the general public think about music.
Tumblr media
5:25pm - As the France guys sing their song again, I give them a hearty congrats, you might have been what I described as "a fine enough song" in the moment, but re-listening to it, it's definitely a worthy winner. But I can't go and give it a 7/7 now, I have to abide by history as it is right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, I'm gonna go change over to BBC Two to watch Flog It now, see ya later.
PS. If you wanna read my thoughts on the entire show, use the tag #loublu08's jesc 2023 commentary

Junior Eurovision 2023 Personal Ranking (by tiers, before the show).
First of all, hello. It's been some of a not long but still some time I've never made a text post here. Some things changed since then: I got a new job as a Web Developer since August (luckily). I'm about to get graduate from University. And well, some thoughts about my future and what I accomplished made me change some ways I think about life (and likings, for better or worse...depends)
But with Junior Eurovision 2023 on the go (and after enjoying Eurovision 2023 to the maximum), I knew I had to make a new opinion list. This time is a tier ranking, as one, most of the songs are ballads and I had to think a better way to rank them depending of my likings and preferences, and two, I'm not as impressed as last year's edition due to the previous fact.
So here it is, my personal tier-ranking for this year's 16 songs competing in Nice, France for the trophy!
Tumblr media
Let's explain the ranking tiers, from lower to higher:
"I heard better ones in previous years": Let's face it, they're not too bad or plain as some NQs in adult Eurovision (or even some qualifiers), and for being made by/for children, they are a good start. However, personally, either they didn't catch me and/or I was expecting better from them (Georgia). Therefore, I would be surprised if the live version makes them look better.
"Unlikely but potential Top 5/Winners(?)": While not as awesome as the upper tiers, I found those songs more endearing/moving than the lowest one. And for some cases (France and UK), if placed well in running order and live delivery, who can't say they can't have a good score placing (or maybe, and I say MAYBE, win)?
"Not winners, but I identify myself with them": The wild card of the tiers. While I don't see them winning the contest so easily and there are BETTER songs I like, the reason they are above the two lower tiers is because somehow, by lyrics or the studio video (or both), I ended up sobbing/crying in the middle of work like Elemental's Wade got identified with them. If the staging allows them, they can achieve to be dark horses to get Top 5 or even victory
"I will kill OsterdahlEBU if they mess with the staging or the running order (or place the lower spots)/hj": The difference between these songs and my personal winners is very small (or the perception of the fandom in general). These ones are mostly because I can picture them with a well-done staging and vibes to become legends (and bias in case of Germany, since Ohne Worte deserves the best performance with the sign language detail and love put in it by Fia for her lil sister). And as the title say, the only thing that can totally ruin their chances are either the staging/live performance, and the running order (please NOT Germany starting the contest AGAIN, we know what happened to Pauline and Susan T-T). I wish them ALL the luck I have
"Very nice of them to invite other JESC artists to their concert": In my personal opinion, they have it ALL. They have strength in the song itself, the voices, the vibes, even their live staging (if things go well). Ireland because of the Celtic essence (and FRICKING Sophie Lennon joining Jessica), Spain because of the JESC-fit melody and dreams (please don't remove Sandra's swing, France TV, it's not Loreen's panini press), Netherlands because of their EDM and lifting song, and Armenia because of the UNEXPECTED (yet welcome) K-pop mode they are delivering. My televote is on their side, and they are the first ones I will vote for on Friday 24th. A crime if they somehow are placed LOW.
And that's all. My ranking resumee. In days I will share my more detailed personal opinions by tier. See ya!

my first listen jesc 2023 rankings!
ireland 9.5/10 oh i adore the mood of this, and her dress! this is going to be BEAUTIFUL on stage i can already tell, and she's got such a lovely voice. as long as she can perform it live, she'll be a big contender.
spain, 9/10 oh this is SO fun, i love the video. so many fun colours, i hope the staging lives up to the vibe this gives off. it doesn't feel like a winner in a competition - a little bit too pop-y for that - but is DEFINITELY going in my playlists!
portugal, 9/10 i REALLY like this one, her voice is beautiful, it's such a wonderful mood. i'm not sure how it'll translate to the stage - i'm crossing my fingers she can do really well. another one that's a big favourite for me but doesn't feel like it'll win a competition
germany, 9/10 oh my god she's singing AND signing? that is IMPRESSIVE. big fan of the instrumental, this is another one that has a huge potential with the staging. the fact that i'm already trying to sing along and i'm writing this during the second chorus says it all
georgia, 9/10 i wanted georgia to win last year, and i honestly really love the music video. if the staging matches it with storytelling this could be another really strong contender. the usual comment on recorded vocals, hope they can deliver on stage. LOVE the costumes
malta, 8.5/10 some great vocals (if replicated live), a really good song all round honestly. we'll see how it translates to the stage, i think they could risk taking away from the sound of her voice if they try to get too busy with the staging
ukraine, 8.5/10 the fact that a kid young enough to still be loosing baby teeth is performing LIVE this well already is insane to me. the staging is fun, the colours are wonderful and bright, and i love her costume. super catchy too!
united kingdom, 8/10 last but not least - us! the costumes are great, though these kids look more like 17 than 12/13! there's a clear direction for the staging already, the dance is fun, the song is quirky and unique. if they can perform it live it'll be great!
france, 8/10 i love that they've recycled la zarra's props 😉 it's very france, which checks out. france always delivers so no surprises here. much like the others, just fingers crossed she can deliver the vocals live.
the netherlands, 8/10 this is a builder, the dancers in the first part are going too hard for the song at that point. the staging looks fun, it's all very co-ordinated. it's a fun song, but possibly too generic-pop to stand out? the vocals are very good, especially the young girl!
armenia, 8/10 a music video always makes it harder to assess what live vocals will be like, but it's a fun song, lots of bright colours, good choreography. if they can perform is live it'll be great on the stage!
estonia, 8/10 music video again so hard to judge live vocals, but the song is very pretty. the staging should be powerful but simple if the video is anything to go by. the worst part about (j)esc is pitting ballads and pop songs against each other
italy, 7/10 the vocals are very mature, though the usual pre-recorded disclaimer applies. i'm not sure i have much of a sense of how staging, lighting, costumes etc. might work so i'm a little lost with where to put this
poland, 7/10 it doesn't feel too special, hopefully with some polishing between selection and next months there'll be less nerves, she had a great voice further into the song. i don't think this will make waves, but i could be wrong!
north macedonia, 7/10 she has a lovely voice, and i hope those moons(?) feature in the staging. i like her voice, but it's pre-recorded and doesn't quite match with the video. we'll see how she does live. it has potential!
albania, 6/10 viola has a solid voice, especially if those pre-recorded vocals are also her, damn good range. the instrumental feels a bit empty, & between singing there's not much in the way of stage presence, but she should have more to play with at jesc.

i love the fact that you're bolivian and watch eurovision. it's wonderful to see that our (+ australia) weirdest tradition is cultivated all around the globe.
Thanks! :D
It was all thanks to @spacebobareborn. She introduced me to this new world during last year's edition. And I'm not regretting of knowing about Eurovision (and Junior Eurovision with it), and already waiting for ESC Liverpool 2023 and JESC France 2023! <333. My current winners are Alessandra, Vesna and Kaarija (and Loreen if she wins Melodifestivalen)
Heck, even I was trying to focus on ALL the NATIONAL FINALS that super Saturday (February 11) to check the winners! And I loved it! (well...most of them...still not convinced with the Dansk MGP winner entry imo...)
And the best part is, it COULD BE POSSIBLE to have a LatinAmerican variant of Eurovision starting from this year!

My advice for the participating countries of Eurovision 2023 in 2024 (that no one asked for)
For NQ countries :
Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 : keep sending songs written by Azeri songwriters and include lyrics in Azerbaijani.
Ireland 🇮🇪 : RTÉ CHANGE THE ENTIRE DELEGATION TEAM AND GO INTERNAL!
Latvia 🇱🇻 : go for a televoting bait song.
Malta 🇲🇹 : don't give up and take risks.
Netherlands 🇳🇱 : try a national final maybe?
Denmark 🇩🇰 : DR, you should change the entire system for DMGP.
Georgia 🇬🇪 : don't give up and keep going, it will pay off.
Greece 🇬🇷 : ERT/EPT, be more transparent for the internal selection.
Iceland 🇮🇸 : improve the staging.
Romania 🇷🇴 : TVR, if you come back next year, change the entire delegation team.
San Marino 🇸🇲 : send a good song.
For finalists countries :
Austria 🇦🇹 : keep being creative and crazy. However... ORF, promote more your next representative so they will get more attention. Also, improve the staging.
Portugal 🇵🇹 : keep going, you are becoming a powerhouse, but next time try a radio-friendly song in Portuguese so you will get attention. Or perhaps try a good fado song.
Switzerland 🇨🇭 : stop sending male ballads. Just because it worked with Gjon's Tears doesn't mean it will work with other male ballads. Send something else.
Poland 🇵🇱 : TVP go internal (so you won't steal money from Polish people and you will save money for a better staging) and send someone who has good vocals.
Serbia 🇷🇸 : idk, being avant-garde worked for Konstrakta but not that much for Luke Black. Perhaps try to send something that will make everyone agree in Europe. But keep being creative and unique.
France 🇫🇷 : I just want to ask this question to Europe. What the hell do you want from France in Eurovision ? No Europe, we can't dig up Edith Piaf from her grave, Barbara Pravi won't come back in the contest and Indila will never dare to represent my country in Eurovision, move on. Anyway, FTV keep ARA, the current french HoD, for JESC at least. I think it's time that we send a rap song in ESC, it's part of the French music scene and you shouldn't deny it any longer.
Cyprus 🇨🇾 : avoid, if possible, to buy a song from Swedish composers, try to send a song made by Cypriots (or Greeks) songwriters.
Spain 🇪🇸 : keep going, one year it will pay off and you will finally win the contest for the 3rd time. Also, for the noisy minority of Spanish eurofans, try to support your representative without harassing others contestants, especially the French ones.
Sweden 🇸🇪 :
Bring back Petra Made as a host. Would be also happy if Måns Zelmerlöw is chosen as a host too.
Take a risk for once, like send a rock song or a track in Swedish, don't play safe and don't be lazy.
ESC 2024 should take place in Stockholm.
Albania 🇦🇱 : don't ditch the televoting in FiK, keep sending songs in Albanian and perhaps send a male artist.
Italy 🇮🇹 : I trust you in terms of quality but please RAI send a female artist next year.
Estonia 🇪🇪 : next year in Eesti Laul, I want the same quality than in the previous edition. This is why you did well this year. Keep going.
Finland 🇫🇮 : keep going, you are doing amazing !
Czechia 🇨🇿 : same than Finland
Australia 🇦🇺 : idk if you will come back next year, but if you do, keep going.
Belgium 🇧🇪 : next year, it will be RTBF's turn to choose its representative. Avoid sending someone who only has The Voice of Belgium as a singing experience. Send someone who is in the Belgian musical industry for at least 2 years.
Armenia 🇦🇲 : just keep going.
Moldova 🇲🇩 : keep sending songs in Romanian but try to send someone who has never participated in Eurovision.
Ukraine 🇺🇦 : keep going I guess ? I mean, Ukraine has been a powerhouse since its debut in ESC.
Norway 🇳🇴 : ditch the vocoder in MGP. That's it.
Germany 🇩🇪 : Europe, what the hell do you want from Germany in Eurovision ? Anyway, NDR should change the entire delegation team because clearly Europe doesn't believe in the country in the contest anymore.
Lithuania 🇱🇹 : the televoting should be the tie-breaker in PiN. Otherwise, keep going Lithuania, one day you will win this.
Israel 🇮🇱 : KAN, before you announced the name of your representative, ask them if they want to go to Eurovision. Consent is key. Anyway, stay with the internal selection, it works better for you.
Slovenia 🇸🇮 : keep going, you have nothing to regret.
Croatia 🇭🇷 : HRT rethink on your selection method for next year. And support your next representative the same way you did for Let 3, it did pay off.
United Kingdom 🇬🇧 : don't give up, just keep the same approach you have since last year.
Bonus: My advice for EBU in 2024 (that no one asked for)
Don't remove the juries. Instead, update the juries system asap because this year it showed more than usual that the juries always vote for the same countries to the point it killed the suspense. You can start by increasing the number of the juries per country, like 10 by exemple. The juries should be more diverse in terms of age, careers related to music and music backgrounds.
Bring back the juries in the semi-finals.
Keep the vote of the rest of the world, so eurofans outside of Europe and fans from non participating countries can vote for their favourite songs.
Can you bring back the way the televoting points were announced from 2016 to 2018? It was better then imo.
Open the press center from the first day of the rehearsals until the day of the grand final, not only during the ESC week, some delegations complained about that this year.

The Battle Of The Years (JESC Edition)
A couple weeks ago, I wrote a three-part post pitting the 2023 Eurovision entries against the 2024 entries by country. After talking to people (and by that I mean my sister) and coming up with ideas for fun posts leading up to the contest, I came up with the idea to do the exact same thing, but with the Junior Eurovision Songs!
Of course, I'm not able to do 2024 as the Junior Eurovision songs for this year won't be out until well after the contest is over. So, I'm gonna do the 2022 songs vs. the 2023 songs by country, divided by where they finished on the board. I'm also not going to do explanations as that will make an already long post longer and...yeah.
France: Oh Maman! vs. Cœur. Winner: Cœur.
Spain: Señorita vs. LOVIU. Winner: LOVIU.
Armenia: Dance! vs. Do I My Way. Winner: Do It My Way.
United Kingdom: Lose My Head vs. Back To Life. Winner: Back To Life.
Ukraine: Nezlamna vs. Kvitka. Winner: Kvitka.
Poland: To The Moon vs. I Just Need A Friend. Winner: To The Moon.
Netherlands: La Festa vs. Holding On To You. Winner: La Festa.
Albania: Pakëz diell vs. Bota Ime. Winner: Bota Ime.
Germany: Ohne Worte
Malta: Diamonds In The Skies vs. Stronger. Winner: Stronger.
Italy: Bla Bla Bla vs. Un mondo giusto. Winner: Bla Bla Bla
North Macedonia: Životot e pred mene vs. Kaži mi, kaži mi koj. Winner: Kaži mi, kaži mi koj
Portugal: Anos 70 vs. Where I Belong. Winner: Where I Belong
Georgia: I Believe vs. Over The Sky. Winner: I Believe.
Estonia: Hoiame Kokku
Ireland: Solas vs. Aisling. Winner: Solas.
Kazakhstan: Jer-Ana.
Serbia: Svet bez granica.
