I've been trying to find alternative material to work with the jesmonite, instead of paper. Even though I love paper and its materiality, it is really time consuming to remove it from the surface of the jesmonite and I find that despite my patience and efforts, residue is still visible and I'm not happy with that.
I had some water soluble film from a previous project that I thought I should give it a try. I have drawn on it with markers and added some stitches, following the same process as previously. To add some shape and not have it flat, we poured the jesmonite straight into the film and then had it a little manipulated and placed it on crinkled paper.

Nail Tech Talk : Top Tips For Setting Up In An Unconventional Space

Setting up can be a little daunting when you first start out, but it doesn’t take long to start building your collection & creating a space that you're happy with. When I started to set up my treatment room, I began by creating a mood board to figure out the aesthetics & practicality of the room. I love to use Pinterest to get my visual ideas out and have mood boards for things like Storage Ideas, Pedicure Set Up and design inspo.
Once you’ve figured out the style you're after you can start to figure out how to make it come to life. Everything takes time and you’ll find sometimes it’s not until you’ve actively worked in a space that you can truly see what you need to change & adjust to make the space really work best for you. It's a work in progress that grows with you as you develop new skills. Don't feel that everything has to be done at once.

My Treatment Room aesthetic is kitsch, plant adorned & bright. I try to keep things fun, but tidy and cozy for clients. I’m not a "normal salon space", but that’s one of the reasons my clients like to come to me. I don’t try to make the room do something it can’t do, I just work with what I can.
Storage
Storage is really important, especially as it can actually save you time if you keep yourself well organized. I really love easy access storage so that I can grab things quickly and not waste time looking around for products.
Nail Polish/ Gel Polish Storage

I originally started out with both the long and short Ikea Alex drawers. These are great if you are just starting out and don't have too much product as they provide a lot of storage space, but if you are like me and tend to have a lot of product (I do makeup as well as nails), I’d recommend going for better quality drawers with more side supports than Ikea. My Alex drawers lasted about 3 years before I had to replace them with a similar Tallboy Style Drawer which I found on sale at La Redoute. My advice would be to spend a little extra on furniture if you can so that you don't have to replace it in future.
Ikea Picture Shelves are also a great way to display polish/gel colours on your walls, but they will need dusting regularly which is why I prefer to use the tallboy style drawers. I tend to use the Picture Shelves to create a "gallery wall" where I display framed art and photos, but these would be great for displaying certifications and awards as well.
Glitter/Diamonte/Dried Flower Storage

I invested some time decanting all my glitters, diamantés and dried nail art flowers into clear acrylic lidded jars which sit in clear boxes (labelled on the bottom) so I can showcase colours more easily to clients rather than rummaging through boxes. Clear Acrylic storage is great as you can see when things are running low and need topping up. I tend to separate these into colour sections keeping like colours together. Ebay, Amazon, Hobby Craft & Muji are great for finding these kind of clear acrylic storage solutions.
Wire Storage
I keep wires under control with a wire tidy box also from Ikea to reduce tripping hazards and keep the room looking tidy. As I do a lot of filming in the room, I do have quite a few different wires for various things, anything that doesn't fit into the Ikea Wire Tidy, when not in use, gets stored in Ikea Rattan/Wicker Storage Boxes and slotted away in my Ikea Kallax. I label the different plugs with a Dymo Label Machine so I don't get things confused. 
How To Display Your Nail Art Professionally
I love nail art and have a lot of nail tips left over from content creating and old Pop Up Nail Bar menus. I was looking for a way to showcase these to clients and discovered a really cool Nail Art Display Box on Ebay which looks very professional. You can change the display every season or theme each clear pull out frame to your liking. With so many ideas and options available this is a great way to break it down visually for customers. Pedicure Set Up

I recently started offering pedicures again and needed to create a cozy pedicure space that could easily be put away when not in use.  As I don’t have laminate flooring, I had a custom size floor matte made to protect my rug and carpet area from splashes and mess  by https://www.floormats.co.uk . When not in use, this slots away under a sofa and easily pulls out when I need it again. It's also easy to wipe down and keep disinfected.
Instead of using a storage trolly to display Pedicure Products (as my room is carpeted which wouldn’t be practical), I keep my bottles and sprays on trays on top of a wooden stool. I have 2 different trays which I alternate with the two systems I use, Footlogix & Famous Names Releaf. * Nail techs use my discount code TABBY10 for 10% off these brands and more on the Louella Belle site.
I purchased  my concrete pink/white tray to display my Footlogix products from Etsy Seller JustSoDesignbyRachel (https://etsy.me/37c1csl ) who had to adapt when first lockdown hit & set up a shop selling hand made beautiful concrete items. Where I can, I love to shop with and support smaller businesses & fellow nail artists.

For a leg rest/foot rest, I use a foldable stool from Amazon with customised vinyl material that can be disinfected. I found out about the stool from a fellow nail tech on the Footlogix Facebook Group ! The vinyl I reupholstered the stool with came from Etsy Shop HomeTexStudio (https://etsy.me/2JJlRsb). The height is just right for my set up, not for everyone I’m sure , but for the space I work with it’s perfect. Here’s a video of the DIY stool transformation :

I use Belava Pedi Bowls with recyclable disposable liners for my pedicures as I love glitter & they really go with my room's aesthetic! I think customers also feel much better knowing each time they visit they get a fresh pedi liner. The Belava Glitter bowls do come with a disinfectable insert, but I prefer to use the disposables as I feel it reassures customers that my hygiene standards go above and beyond, especially in these times.
I use an IKEA rattan stool to sit on when doing pedicures and my clients sit on a large sofa chair which allows them to really relax and decompress. After each client, I disinfected the soft furnishing with Sursol Fabric Disinfecting Spray as removing all soft furnishings was not an option for me.
Retail Items

As my set up has less surface space than a traditional salon space, I show off the products I retail on my shorter Ikea Alex Drawers & Ikea Kallax shelves. I try to keep displays and clutter to a minimum as every surface gets wiped down and disinfected before/after each client. In keeping with the aesthetics of my room, I display my products in small wooden boxes and clear acrylic shelves.
The Work Table

My work table is the area of my room that gets the most use. I use it as a work space for not just my nail clients, but also to film and create nail tutorials and content. Unlike many techs, my work table is a little wider than usual which is not for everyone, but works well for me. I have the Ikea Nordan Gateleg Table which has 6 storage drawers down the middle and two sides which can fold down. I use the Clear Ikea Skvallra Desk Protector to keep it free of any accidents and spills. To add a little personality to the space I alternate Paperchase Wrapping Paper which I find very fun and colourful under the Desk Protector, these make great backdrops for nail art photos as well. To get the best out of my nail art photos I use the Ikea Tertial Lamp with a Day Light bulb which I find works well as a work lamp and for photography purposes.
I keep my tools tidy with a custom made Jesmonite tray which I had commissioned by a fellow nail tech ( @bylaurajayne_jesmonitedesigns). It matches my room aesthetic and keeps things nice and tidy when I'm working. I tend to sterilize my tools in my Enbio Auto Clave and then place them on my tray ready for use! If you haven't seen her trays do check them out ! They are the perfect size for nail techs as she makes both rectangle long trays and smaller square trays so there is plenty of room for everything. I think displaying nail tools on the work table like this also gives the tools a bit of respect and helps you to look after them, after all they are probably your most used items and I think it's nice to look after them well so it's just fitting to display them proudly and with a bit of care and thought!

I recently purchased a new hand rest from @gb.wrist.rests. This has been a real game changer as it definitely improves the posture for both myself and my clients when working. Previous to this I had been using an Ikea Wooden laptop holder, which worked well for a couple of years, but over time the disinfectant began to wear down the varnish and I felt it was time to invest in something better. It was also great to support another fellow nail tech who started the GB Wrist Rests business up with her partner during lockdown.
Dust Control
To control dust, I have the Zephyros Dust Collection from Tafs. I find this works really well for keeping the space tidy and protecting mine and my clients lungs. I tend to work more with soak off systems and don't currently e-file so this works well for me. I would recommend getting a more powerful Air Purifier for busier salons working more regularly with enhancements.
Sterilisation

In the corner of my room I store my Enbio S Auto Clave which is used to sterilize tools after they have been washed, then disinfected. I store this on an Ikea Alex Cupboard which doubles up as a storage space for all my cleaning products and spare nail files etc. The Auto Claves are not cheap, but one of the best investments in my Treatment Room. My greatest advice for anyone new to the industry or just starting to set up would be take it a bit at a time. We all have to work within budgets and as you gain clients and get busier you will be able to afford to work your way up towards a space that suits you. I spent many years working as a mobile freelancer before building up a client base that comes to me. It's also worth noting that your own health and client health is so important. Consider the comfort of both of you when creating your space - make sure you are looking after skin and lungs. Protect your hands with gloves when you work to avoid over exposure and make sure you  protecting your lungs from dust particles, but most of all have fun creating a space that suits you!

Assessing Chalice Design And Attitudes Towards Making
As I come towards the end of this module I have been reassessing my module, during this process the chalice has been an important point of consideration. I am happy with the current design and still think it is the best iteration I designed, however, there is certainly room for improvement and beyond that expansion it what it could have achieved. The chalice is visually appealing to me and echo's a baroque style Roman Catholicism which hints at a specific denomination to an extent. The chalice delivers where I wanted it to and does little else, this is not a criticism upon the design nor my ability, instead it is a comment on my scope and willingness to dare. The project/module has pushed me to take on new techniques and materials in a manner that has required precision and dedication, despite this I am still a novice at all these aspects. It is no secret 3D printing, Soap making, and silicone casting are all new disciplines to me and I am proud of the progress I have made. Again though, I ruminate upon what I could have achieved had I known the processes better or if I had measured my abilities more accurately. In reality I cannot alter this but I can contemplate it with the hope of improving for the future, with every module I take larger risks and commit myself further. It is only recent that I felt a shift in my allegiance from ease to struggle, realising that the reward gained from struggling is much more bountiful than its former. This realisation comes later than I would hope but still gives me the opportunity to redeem myself, I now better grasp what is meant by integrity and craftmanship. It means an object is never finished, always longing for further refinement despite going unseen, as it is within the unseen and the concealed that quality is found and integrity is achieved. I would never claim to achieve this level of integrity and when selecting how to define it, I do so with the knowledge that my work is chronically flawed and like a chronic condition I will never cure it, instead I seek to alleviate its symptoms and ease the pain. This is the struggle, the knowledge I will never be free of chronic flaws is both comforting and defeating, the struggle ensures I do not become complacent, in fear I may succumb to my own inadequacy. However, the door is left ajar for insecurity and deficiency, I may falter and fail more than once and possibly irredeemably. Though, it is not the enemy, as the enemy is found within the fear of integrity itself, It will seek to hold me back and question if I should struggle further. I cannot afford to hearken its call as its allure is far too much for me and I know if I listen for too long I will fade into the obscurity I fear. This drawn out explanation illustrates my realisation that I much prefer working harder and taking larger risks with each project despite the implicit pitfalls. I do realise that current risks are still minimal and I wish to increase them. These chalices and reassessing them are part of this process of realising that I am still not taking enough risks. 
In my work moving forward I will seek to increase my dedication, confidence, and risk taking, as I want to make things that are worthwhile. Making new chalice designs and considering what I have and haven't done has shed new light on where this project could have gone, in both a positive and negative direction. I will be focusing upon the improvements I could have made now though, the most significant being the importance of subtlety and scale. If I was doing this project now with my current knowledge I might have tried to use the component making aspect of my project to enable an increased scale. I think that my chalices still possess a presence from their size, however I think that an increased weight and scale would give an air of gravitas to the monolithic vessel. The rationale for not doing it this time is primarily the affordability, this scale of printing and casting would cost me an amount that I cannot afford. To give this number some reality I will calculate it below:
Silicone = £18.00 per kg
PLA (printing) = £25.00 per 500g
Jesmonite = £10.00 for 2kg
Soap = £7.00 per kg
Resin = £11.00 per 500g
Total cost = £71.00 x 3 (I would need roughly 3 times this amount to complete the larger chalice)
This cost is an estimation and could cost less or more, the total cost would be more than I could afford when factoring in all the samples and naturally occurring mistakes I will have to pay for. I would love to have able to finance this but I did not have the foresight to find alternative funding which might have been available to me. In retrospect and moving forward I want to continue increasing scale and improve my printing and casting further.
The other problem I have encountered is the subtlety of my chalices design. I am still unsure whether my design is too verbose or loud, sacrificing a nuanced abstract subtlety for a loud and overzealous presentation. I made it very clear in writings around my work that I wanted to preserve the abstract quality of my chalice while only suggesting its meaning, however, I feel I may have done more than suggest and even suggested the wrong things. This is I suppose the risk of creating loud art/design/craft as you risk being inadvertently rejected by the audience you wish to communicate with. This is all inconsequential though as I cannot know what the audience thinks without first exhibiting the work, so for now the responses I might have received thrive only in my mind and without utility. I am hopeful that the abstract aspects of my chalices are preserved and the addition of the series adds to this subversion of my true feelings. The desire to obscure my true intentions and message is driven from the reality that I do not know my own thoughts on the matter, also I think it irresponsible to communicate a message I am uncertain of or that could be harmful to anyone who believes they have found it.

Seeing the separate slide pieces set in jesmonite pillars and arranged in a group makes me think back to my  research for Conversation in Nature during the summer months.  The pieces together remind me  of the  miniature city like landscapes of moss and fungi in the woods and winkle and limpets  in the rockpools. I have inadvertently created a city like landscape with the jesmonite pillars. The uniformity and repetition that I had originally intended has not quite transpired and I prefer the pillars to the slides. Again I feel my work is neither one thing or another it is lacking something. Around the base I have placed a lacy knit piece and a round tapestry that I made as part of my previous experimental development  which looks like the fungi in the woods it looks good with the pillars and reflects the organic pulled out of the earth idea but I prefer a clear reflective base with the slide pieces. So I need to find an alternative way to combine or to make a choose between clean, artificial, reflective and smooth as if in the laboratory or earthy, decaying, organic, expansive and globular as if just pulled and stretched away from and out of  a natural environment.

……. small things matter. simple steps can lead to a bigger impact on the environment. we believe that plastic waste issues are not only the homework of big companies or big industries, but every living being on earth has to make their own contribution to reducing waste. two young initiators, irene kusuma and mendy laoda, started their own sustainable story in the crowded capital of indonesia. laoda and kusuma have always been free-spirited, enthusiastic, and empathetic with their surroundings. hence, rebuilding a healthier environment does not feel like a forced duty for them to accomplish, but rather as a passion for promoting a greener lifestyle. a potrait of irene kusuma (right) and mendy laoda (left), founders of mortiermortier is a room for sustainable innovation and exploration in materials since 2017, with plastic that is currently being the duo’s main focus, nestled with the desire to house all the upcycled and innovative materials - an osculating mission they aim to achieve through time. with all the cutting, weighing, shaping, flattening, and baking duties, laoda and kusuma have passed many kinds of material explorations focusing on how to transform all these waste into products of higher value. and this is how everything began in mortier. mortier: the upcycling and recycling process"3 years ago we started with cement. we tried to make a small concrete pot and some home decors as it is the simplest thing to make. then we started to find other materials to replace the cement, remembering the high co2 emissions from cement production; so we used fly ash and jesmonite. we change the materials per season and now, we are exploring plastic waste.""upcycling is repurposing or reusing unused stuff into something that has a higher value than the original object, such as from wastes into another product that has a new function, form, and more aesthetic. another example is from patchwork into a bag whereas recycling is the process of turning waste into another product that often has lesser quality or value. for example: from colorful plastic stuff/containers into cement bucket with limited color, usually either black or green. the example is from used groceries plastic bags into new upcycled bags." "more of self-reward, the feeling of indescribable satisfaction from deep inside, even though we know that what we did may not be as big or significant for the impacts. but we feel the real happiness from doing that small thing, which at the moment may be the maximum point that we can do for our environment. the more rewarding moment was also when people appreciated and were willing to know or even engage more with these "little" things." more about plastic "plastic usages should be maximized by reusing them as much as we can. if it is no longer possible to reuse it, then disposal should not be the next option. recycling should be the alternative option to close the loop. then rethink whether we need to dispose of it or even consume it in the first place.""plastics, by general, consists of 7 different types; each type has distinct characteristics specifically for its melting point level. mortier itself reprocess used plastics for type 2 and 4 as it has high durability and has its market due to its aesthetic." plastic waste and the millenials’ perspectivehow hard is it to start incorporating this green lifestyle? what usually becomes the roadblock? "compared to 10 years ago, it is actually much easier to start this green lifestyle today, as more and more millennials are concerned and aware of environmental issues. in fact, many more sustainable options and supporting facilities are also available to start this green lifestyle. for example, relating to straw wastes, many restaurants are not offering straws for their customers. so both parties (customer and seller) have been putting efforts to solve these issues. another example is in front of plaza senayan mall, a specially designed trash bin with several different holes for different types of wastes are provided. this trash bin can even accept e-waste that requires different disposal treatments so that sometimes it is unaddressed in our community." "one of the many things that may hinder us from doing this sustainable lifestyle is actually our habit. for example, it is hard to always remember to bring our own reusable bags when shopping. or forget to inform the waiter in a restaurant for not putting a straw in our drinks. or another example is we sometimes get used to putting our trash in any holes in the trash bin even though it has several holes for a different purpose. and of all these things are sometimes because of either "oh i forgot" or "oh it is too late."" what is an easy step to start living responsibly if you were to advise our younger audience?"we believe that this whole awareness is more about ourselves. something similar to small things begins from ourselves, which can eventually influence other people. meanwhile, the easiest step is to bring our reusable bags to go shopping so that we do not have to use plastics. or just let us think a bit before we do or throw something so that we are not putting plastics (waste) to different holes specifically for organic waste or landfill. as to expand this green lifestyle notion, bazaar is one good example. by talking to the customer personally, and sharing the stories on how we process these generous outcomes that eventually touches them."advice for young companies, drawing from your experience in starting the business? Sideboards have rocketed in popularity with the of mid-century modern decor. As well as handy storage, they’re a great opportunity to add character and personality to a space with the way you style the top of your sideboard.
I’m forever faffing with the arrangement on ours, so I’ve pulled together some tips that you can take collectively or separately to help you create a balanced, characterful display of your own. But before we start, here’s a few sideboards themselves in case you’re still in the market for one…

Ten Tips to style a sideboard
Here are my top ten tips for how to style a sideboard. But remember: interior design isn’t paint-by-numbers. Think about expressing your personality through your home – it’s as individual as the way you tell a story to friends. These are just guides that might help nail some of the basics of sideboard styling like shape, symmetry, rhythm and proportion, so that you can add the spirit and creativity through your own originality. Most importantly: have fun. Or else, what’s the point?
1. Don’t expect to get it right first time
Scrolling through Instagram or browsing Pinterest, it can feel as though everyone else styles their spaces perfectly, first time and every time. They just effortlessly stack books and drape a plant tendril without even looking and – bam! – it’s a vision.
I promise you that’s not true – there’s a lot of trial, error and faffing involved before you achieve a look that feels right. So don’t be afraid to keep changing it up – don’t commit to particular items definitely living on the sideboard because they might just not work there.

2. Balance over symmetry
Unlike in architecture, true symmetry is rare in styling – not least because it means having identical pairs of everything you want to use!
So focus instead on balance, by which we mean even weighting across a space. The two fool-proof techniques for balance on a sideboard are similar to my guide on how to style a mantlepiece: anchor the vignette in the centre with a large piece like a mirror or piece of art. And/or use a medium-sized piece of similar height on either edge. Both of these techniques help the eye move seamlessly over the space.
But balance doesn’t just have to mean shape and size – you could also consider the balance of colour and texture. For example: if you have a dichromatic scheme (two colours – black and white, pink and green, etc), mix up the amount of each colour across the space rather than being tempted to group either colour on the edges.

3. Try building a theme
This is a tip I learned from a Proper Stylist that will make your sideboard look effortlessly professional – thematic similarities in your items will lend a subtle cohesion to a space that allows the eye to positively glide over it. What do I mean by ‘thematic similarities’?
Basically: similar stuff, not necessarily by colour or shape, but by theme. For example, metallic textures across a candle, vase and mirror frame. Or several vintage collectibles from a similar era but otherwise unconnected. Organic, woven textures could bring together linen, rattan, cane and wicker.
In this example, the neutral-toned ceramics of both vases, the bust, the trinket jar, plant pot and even the mug inside the sideboard create a thematic point.

4. Use the wall behind it
The wall behind and above a sideboard is part of the styling picture, so it’s important to keep it in mind when deciding how to style your space.
Think about how you can style a sideboard with a large mirror or piece of artwork. Hang a print or mirror (always think about what will be reflected though – a mirror opposite a window is excellent for upping light, unless you have people walking right by that window and will keep catching strangers’ eyes!) around one third of the way up the wall (so there is more space above the piece than between it and the sideboard).
If it’s on the wall, I recommend centring your piece above the furniture. But if it’s propped up, play around with off-centre until you get the balance you’re looking for.
Alternatively, if you’re renting or simply don’t want to put nails in the wall, prop up your art or mirror on the sideboard. This is my preference, and it gives a more bohemian, undone finish. Just be sure you have heavy pieces at its base to prevent slipping!

5. Mix up eclectic displays
If you aren’t into Jo Malone candles, pampas grass and styling beads – don’t use them! Use whatever you love, and whatever will make you feel happy to see in your home.
I like to use meaningful vintage books, framed photos and mementos from holidays. Mixing up textures, sizes and styles will create contrast and visual interest – it’s especially effective when using a theme as well, as in tip 3.

6. Try minimalism
If eclectic and maximalism aren’t your thing, try out a minimalist approach. If, while styling your sideboard, you feel it looks cluttered, try simply taking items away one by one.
A great minimalist option is a couple of flat, stacked books on either side, with an object – a candle, a posy vase, a plant, an ornament – on each.

7. Don’t underestimate the Power of 3
Trios are like an interior design cheat code – they’re hard to get wrong, because the human eye loves threes.
But the key to a great trio is a mix of heights and profiles – something tall and slim (a vase, a bottle, a slender lamp), something small (a ceramic, a paperweight, a trinket dish) and something between the two (a candle, a succulent). Try grouping the items on a tray or a large book.
Clustering a trio of small ceramics at the corner of a propped up print can help to soften the corners, as well as stopping it from slipping.

8. Add something living (or fake it!)
No matter what we’re styling, you’ll always get this tip from me. Nature needs no styling – foliage, flowers or plants soften edges and corners without you having to work hard at it. They naturally resist symmetry and change with the time of day – making your sideboard styling into an ever-transforming space.
I particularly love a trailing plant to dip below the vertical edge of a sideboard. It breaks up geometry and adds an additional dimension to the shape. Though if you need access constantly, it might not be practical.

Something old, something new – rich depth can be achieved by contrasting finish and texture. Polished brass and matte ceramics, glossy magazines and vintage paperbacks, shimmering glass and patina metal.

A stack of vintage paper backs, a neat row of ‘coffee table’ hardbacks, propped up magazines with illustrated covers… The power of publications to act as decor is huge, and swapping them up by mood, season, or the latest addition to your collection is hugely satisfying.
See if there’s a handful of books with spines that fit your colour palette, and try them on your sideboard. Unless you’re a hardcore alphabetiser, in which case that will be sheer blasphemy…

PLAYFUL PROCESS

The images above show how Jesmonite has been casted into balloons to make ‘Puffy Bricks’. Jesmonite, a sustainable concrete alternative, is usually associated with hard, industrial looking products. Interior Futures inverts the norm as well as the form, treating interiority as a temporal condition and the future as a destination – indeed many possible and impossible places. Far from the shiny, singular future of showrooms and advertising, these futures draw from many places and times. They’re disruptive and distributed, embracing uncertainty and other creatures. Objects and spaces breathe and talk and complain; they’re situated on faraway planets or in the same dusty buildings that have stood for hundreds of years. Interiority as a condition is the bubble you carry around you, equally handy in a rapidly failing terrestrial climate as in outer space, as you step around the bodies on the stairs of overcrowded cities.

Boxed set of books
Imagining this in print has been great fun for all the authors and editors of Interior Futures. An exhibition as a medium enables us to explore a selection of futures in a present inferior, through spatial practice. Museum director James Bradburne points out that an exhibition is not a book, with no control over linearity unless you’re Walt Disney, forcing people into cars on a track to pass them in front of corporate conveniences. Against this singular vision we present a plurality, with narratives of feminism and decolonisation, welcoming a wide range of materials and agencies. Work by Interior Futures authors is mixed with that of emerging artists working across nationalities, cultures and media. The temporal is turned back into the spatial, formation into form, with transition and contradiction becoming the norm.

Medium; Füun Mále Uribe Forés, 2018 Installation
Material surfaces are always performing, at different scales of time and space. This work explores the vertical surface as a medium, at architectural scale—operating between the real and supernatural, material and virtual, digital and handcrafted, past and present. The surface explores feminine cosmological perspectives from South America through poetry and textile art, creating a liminal space for new conversations to emerge around space, materials, decolonisation and feminism. The piece includes a digitally-modelled sculpture cast in Jesmonite, with projection mapping, a soundscape, and a sculptural seat.

A Selfless Society Julie Freeman, 2016 Online audio-visual digital artwork
A Selfless Society is an abstract animation of forms whose shape and behaviour are influenced by the activity patterns of a naked mole-rat colony. Naked mole-rats are unique among mammals, with unusual features that result from extreme adaptations to living underground, including increased longevity and cancer resistance. Here they are tracked using RFID technology to provide live activity data. Their cooperative eusocial lifestyle means the colony as a whole has the strongest chance of success, while lone individuals have little chance of survival. Laundry Diptych Patrick Macklin and Thomai Pnevmonidou (SpaceKraft), 2019 Prints, 2 x 594 x 841 mm
Two devices harness thermals to facilitate the drying of cloth, one in the air of tropical climates, the other in warm kitchens. One is found in Singapore – rows of externally mounted pipe sockets holding painted bamboo poles, often on the façades of public housing blocks. The other is in Glasgow – internal, ceiling-mounted, a block, sash-cord, cast iron lift frame and individual timber laths, found in Victorian tenement dwellings. In Singapore, the temperature and conditions are consistent; in Glasgow they are variable. In Singapore, the device is fixed publicly to the exterior of the building; in Glasgow it is located within, in a central part of the home.

Positioned at the interface between interior practice and philosophies of conservation, the work concerns the future of historic interiors where space, time, materials and people are intertwined in an unfolding process. A decaying timber joist is used to examine the flow between the body and the place that it inhabits, to position the interior as an agent of change, a space that re-figures human and non-human relationships, where the material of the human body and the natural and cultural world are coincident as investigative tools for the historic interior.

Moving composition for layered, translucent interior surfaces, derived from quantum mechanics, nano, and string theory considerations Barry Martin, 2018 Print, 841 x 1189 mm
This print represents a stream of decisions made by a future family for their daily needs. Taking inspiration from the subatomic actions, operations, and linked movements these commands will generate, this visualises the act of becoming, streaming processes that would be seen on and in futuristic surfaces. Rhythmic flow-waves are suggested as being embedded into membrane-type surfaces, acting as conduits to transport the commands, and forming the boundary lines of their habitations. Reconfigurations of interior spaces in size, shape, characteristics, and functional attributes will become the norm, using new technologies derived from quantum mechanics, nano, and string theories. Occupying urban spaces and creating non-normative situations through performative actions are explored here as students perform actions framed as both artistic experiments and political actions. Re-Bodiment Celeste Camilleri, Jordan Edge, Stephanie Siu, 2018 3D printed seeds, audio
Re-bodiment is a speculative museum collection. With preservation of the collection made a fundamental priority, the identity of each object is embedded into a Seed Host and mapped onto a sonic identity, giving each object a new physical and digital expression. This is achieved using CRISPR gene transfer technology to insert identity data into third-party hosts, expanding the possibilities for their survival. When the results are removed from the original artworks, the collection retains an experiential form over a different timespan. This collection was displayed at the Royal Academy, London in December 2018.

Technological Nature Daria Jelonek, 2017 Moving image
What if your shower could cause a rainbow, you could encounter the Northern Lights in your fridge, or observe the sunset in an artificial window? Technological Nature investigates the imitation, re-creation and augmentation of natural phenomena in everyday life, to create a new mindset for the hybrid of traditional biophysical nature and the nature of technology. The project results from my experience of living with objects that artificially imitate natural light – such as artificial sun clocks, rainbow machines and aurora machines – for a period of six months, in order to explore their nature.

Me Time 4.0 Mimi Kim, 2018 Moving image
To counter sensory overload, this artistic research project aimed to align the mind and body back into balance by reducing sensory stimuli. This was a series of self-experiments using eccentric methods of REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) to alleviate the effects of hyperthyroidism (a hormone/stress-related disease) and hypersensitivity. Being isolated while experiencing contemplation and self-reflection, remaining aware of the external world, is employed as a form of mindfulness.

Two Percent Of Spaces You Could Possibly Encounter Alex Taylor, 2019 Installation
Two Percent Of Spaces You Could Possibly Encounter is a live scene categorisation system built on top of MIT’s 10-million-image-strong Places database. A live feed is taken from the camera, run through a neural network trained on the dataset, then filed into one of 365 spatial categories, ranging from amusement parks to operating theatres. Responding to the claim that the Places dataset can account for 98% of spaces a user could possibly encounter, viewers are encouraged to interact with the camera feed in order to reveal the quirks, blind-spots and biases that can be found in the software.

This work is based on the short story by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, who popularised the genre of magical realism. Light is like water is the tale of two children who discover that, by breaking light bulbs from the lamps in their house, they can flood the place with light. They dive between the living room furniture and sail between islands in the house when their parents are not home. Based on the metaphysical concept of magic developed by Federico Campagna in his 2018 book Technic and Magic, the magical nature of this scene signals the existence of a dimension beyond the one we perceive.

Psychotropic House Project led by Caroline Yan Zheng, 2018
The following works were created by RCA students for a #mood research group led by Caroline Yan Zheng. Inspired by J.G Ballard’s story “The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista”, students explored programmable materials, affective sensing and modes of interaction to enact sensual, mysterious, and emotionally-charged experiences. When the “smart home” moves from being merely responsive to acquiring affective qualities, it will become a powerful mediator of human experience and relations, creating unpredictable or even psychotropic outcomes in “emotionally intelligent” future interiors.

Reflecting on Ballard’s “The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista,” I wondered how smart materials, such as the “plastex” in the story, could become emotionally haunted artefacts, “echoing every shift of mood” of inhabitants, as he described. Touch as an emotional conductor, combined with thermochromic materials as a revealing, prophetic medium might allow reading one’s ethereal self. Collecting fragments of stones and cement in London, I create a parallel between the reality of analogue materials and the science fiction prospect of an emotionally and technologically intelligent material.

Soon, we become an entirely new, predictable public, susceptible to the regulation of decision making, vulnerable to emotional monitoring and manipulation. We believed that self-tracking of the skin was for introspection and personal transformation, but perhaps we should have learnt the first time around. The monitoring of bodily changes reveals the effects of thought, feeling and emotion as physical properties. This work explores the skin as the interface for affection between humans.

Our generation has a future shaped by technology, especially Artificial Intelligence. As a result of technological overload, some might say humanity is going through an identity crisis, due to the dilemma posed by having a body in a digital world. Technology is positioned as an alternative to materiality and reality, and this transfer can profoundly affect our emotions. The creatures we have created are, like surrogates of physical bodies, intended to relieve you from the need for physical contact.

#StyledByMe winner Chloe Spillett visits Grand Designs Live
What I loved most about my first visit to Grand Designs Live at ExCel London (I know, I’ve been under a rock) is its dedication and innovative approach to sustainable design solutions. Prior to my visit, when I thought of “Grand Designs”, eco-friendly always popped into my head, but achievable never did. I think many people would agree that creating environmentally-friendly builds or extensions is a desirable goal but many, like me, wouldn’t know where to begin or where to find the right kind of information.
Grand Designs Live holds all of the solutions under one roof, exhibiting a wide range of up-and-coming design products to improve homeowners’ day-to-day living without harming the environment. From Anglian Home Improvements’ stand showcasing its energy-efficient windows, doors, orangeries and conservatories to firms demonstrating insulation blocks made from mushrooms, this exhibition is an Earth-hugging haven!
You don’t have to acquire a plot of land in remote countryside to be able to utilise these products. If you’re thinking of building an extension or even if you’re merely decorating or updating some existing fixtures and fittings, you too can get on board by utilising products that serve to replenish our earth’s resources and reduce your carbon footprint.
For bigger builds there was one product in particular that I found really impressive: the STROCK building block. It was made by combining waste materials from farm and brickworks such as straw and clay-rich earth to create a material that’s both strong and durable. Best of all, the blocks aren’t fired but dried in driers powered by locally-sourced timber. So not only do they reduce the demand for materials, the carbon emissions produced in manufacturing are also minimised. It’s a winning combination and a truly great product!
Because sustainability is at the heart of Grand Designs Live, even the room sets continued the theme, and there were lots of inspiring ideas to choose from. A particular highlight for me was the award-winning and utterly gorgeous kitchen set by Finch London.
The Finch team take a keen interest in the environment and are constantly looking at ways to keep their carbon footprint to a minimum. From the materials they use, production methods, delivery and waste, all are considered for their environmental impact.
This sensational set is no exception. Each fixture and fitting has been selected with careful consideration for the environment. The water-based Jesmonite work surface provides a lightweight alternative to cast concrete and doesn’t release volatile organic compounds unlike some of its concrete counterparts. The end of the island is home to a living herb wall, a sensory treat for the eyes and the taste buds. All the while, it purifies the air and absorbs CO₂.
My particular favourite element (aside from the wrap around blush colour which is just giving me life) is the swoon-worthy cork flooring, which is both stylish and sustainable. Cork is a 100% natural material that’s harvested every 10 years by extracting only the bark from the tree. This reduces deforestation and the tress are left to do what trees do best! Moreover, cork has both hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties so it’s a perfect installation for family homes. This really is a winning product in my eyes and I’m committed to featuring cork in my next home improvement project.
