2023 Tony Awards Winners List

Broadway’s biggest night is back! The 2023 Tony Awards were held on Sunday, June 11, at the United Palace in New York City’s Washington Heights.

Julianne Hough and Skylar Astin kicked off the night as they hosted The Tony Awards: Act One, a live pre-show on Pluto TV. The first winners of the night were announced, and Jennifer Grey presented a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre to her father, Joel Grey.

Oscar winner (and Tony nominee) Ariana DeBose led the second part of the night, which aired at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

In 2020, the American Library Association released a list of the 100 most frequently banned and challenged books from 2010-2019. Most of them are for children and young adults, or are commonly assigned in schools. They range from century-old classics to current popular novels. Some were challenged for predictable reasons--swearing, violence, or sex. Many were challenged because they contained LGBTQ+ content. Some were challenged because they critiqued social institutions.

All of them are available either in the Columbus State Library or via the OhioLINK system. Clicking on any of the titles below will tell you where you can find the book; OhioLINK items can be requested and sent to the Columbus State campus. i saw dear evan hansen livee (review)

i meant to post this sooner but school was busy so here i am

this was the national tour in sac

i went w/ my sisters and my friend plus her siblings

i had upper balcony seats, i wish i got to see it closer, but i’m grateful they even came to my city uwu

let’s get to it~

STAGE & INSTRUMENTAL

*the stage was same as the og

* the projection of the social media posts were a good touch for the bg

* the lights were good too, the bg would change color (orange in sincerely me, pink in only us)

* the sound effects sounded real

* the lights were glowing the same as the the beat in good for you

* the way all of them kept walking around looking at “social media posts” on the projection bgs in some songs

* showing evan’s speech on the bg and the videos for the connor project too

* we can see the musicians bc they had a balcony where you can see a few of them

* the sound and instrumental were sounded real (guitar and piano)

* props to the musicians

ACTING:

* sam primack played evan

* he was super good !

* he portrayed evan well, the anxiety and all

* he gave a young fresh vibe of evan

* the panic in his voice, the sobbing and sniffing were so well acted

* evan looking lost in waving through a window

* the “WOOOOOOAAAHHHH” at the end of waving through a window

* them high notes in for forever and words fail tho 👌🏼

* “i’M NOT hYpERVenTILaNG!!” and then “Dear Connor Murphy..”

* when he dropped the note cards in you will be found

* he kept apologizing and picked them up w/ a small voice

* he sat on the ground for a while and starts to have a breakdown

* he tugs his knees and sobs there 😢

* when he walked up and KNEELED DOWN in only us, zoe was sitting on the bed, it was at evan’s verse, he went up to her and kneeled w/ both knees while singing + staring into her eyes singing “so it can be us~ it can be us and oooonly us~ and what came before won’t count anymore or matter we can try that~”

* that was unexpected by me since the only version i saw was the og broadway performance and it didn’t have that which rlly knocked my socks off

* the sloppy kissing tho 😔👌🏼✨

* he’s so LoUD in act 2, like damn he went all out

* his voice was squeaky/cracked from broken sobs at some points

* the way he looked so StResSed & shouting when talking to jared and alana before good for you

* his begging when connor took his letter and when alana posted the “suicide note” so painful but good

* also the way evan always wiped his hands on his pants when zoe would stick her hand out

* how panicky he was when he freaked out that zoe was gonna “break up” w/ him

* their chemistry honestly 😭💙

* he also said a lot “what do you means” throughout the show i noticed

* his lines in good for you w/ heidi, jared, and alana singing in bg were so overwhelming but in a good way

* just an overall fresh, awkward, anxious vibe to him 😔💙

* his voice reminded me of the og broadway

* the face connor gave at cynthia when larry and zoe said he was high

* the way he play punches evan in sincerely me

* the choreo in sincerely me is so iconic

* he stands up and reaches his hand before leaving the stage

* when evan told the truth and the murphys left the living room, they showed connor too and he also left walking away w/ disappointment/pity

* zoe was played by stephanie la rochelle

* she was good and sounded nearly the same as the og broadway/laura

* the way how zoe was nice in the beginning to evan, distant to him at first in her house about connor, then slowly opens up to him and accepts him for who he is is just 🤧

* in for forever, “there’s nothing that we can’t discuss, like girls we wish would notice us but never do” evan looks at zoe and dramatically clears his throat and continues singing

* in if i could tell her, when evan said “he thought you looked rlly pretty ER-you looked pretty COOL when you had indigo streaks in your hair” she says “he did!” and evan says really fast “he dID AHAHAHAHAH”

* it made the theatre laugh and same

3. The Town That Dreaded Sundown

Sure enough, upon leaving the drive-in and stopping in a deserted lovers’ lane, the couple is tormented by a replica of the so-called Phantom, a low-concept psycho with a flour sack over his head who takes generous bites out of his bloodied victims. Only Jami narrowly escapes with her life. It’s the first of several gory encounters that explicitly reference or restage distinctive setpieces from Pierce’s original as the new-model Phantom embarks on his spree — including the famously resourceful stabbing executed with pocket knife and trombone. There’s a certain tidy symmetry to the fact that both the film and its villain are effectively staging copycat murders, but it’s hardly a revelatory gimmick in the post-“Scream” landscape of postmodern horror.

Meanwhile, convinced that the police are neglecting key information, Jami embarks on her own investigation to uncover the killer’s identity, assisted by geeky, sinister-sweet archive employee Nick (Travis Tope). Blind paths and red herrings abound, among them a meeting with Charles B. Pierce Jr. (Denis O’Hare), a boat-dwelling crackpot with elaborate theories about his father’s film. (As it happens, the real-life Pierce has a cameo in an unrelated role, which seems something of a missed opportunity.)

Marked by documentary-style location titles, the action alternates between the Texas and Arkansas halves of Texarkana — rather to the detriment of the film’s pacing, which lags even within an 85-minute runtime. Though auds won’t necessarily be able to guess the killer’s identity, the architecture of the twist is telegraphed some way in advance by this structure. Despite the deliberate setup, the finale of the film seems rushed and perfunctory, while several promising narrative leads are left unexplored in Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s script. One provocative but underdeveloped idea is the threatening presence of militant Christian protest groups decrying the town’s fixation with Pierce’s film as naked exploitation of a tragedy. Given that it openly admits to being a naked re-exploitation thereof, this disappointing remake might have teased that out a little further.

CANTON — A baker’s dozen of St. Lawrence County residents were wrangled up Friday in what county District Attorney Gary M. Pasqua is calling the largest welfare fraud sweep in county history. They are accused of defrauding the Department of Social Services out of over $104,000.

Of the 13 charged, 11 women were led into Town Court Friday, during the late morning and into early afternoon, by a St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputy and each pleaded not guilty to charges of felony welfare fraud. Several of the women were additionally charged with felony offering a false instrument for filing.

They were then each released under probation supervision and Mr. Pasqua said there were four other arrests pending.

“Here in St. Lawrence County our welfare benefits provide vital support to genuinely needy families at great cost to honest hard working taxpayers,” Mr. Pasqua said in a news release Friday afternoon. “Those individuals who gain benefits through deception are stealing medicine, groceries, and other necessary provisions from innocent children, vulnerable seniors, working citizens, and others in need.”

County Administrator Ruth A. Doyle said in the release that, “our county stretches limited resources to provide for those in need, therefore it is important to take action against those individuals who unlawfully defraud taxpayers by providing dishonest information to obtain welfare benefits.”

County Sheriff Kevin M. Wells stated that he “is proud of the professionalism and participation of the Sheriff’s Department in carrying out this operation, which is critical to deterring abuse of the taxpayers and ensuring that these critical resources go to those in need.”

James Monroe and David Huber of the Public Defender’s Office took turns representing each of the 11 women, who came from all across the county.

Several of the women wept as they stood before Justice Michael R. Morgan.

Mr. Monroe said the clients he represented suffer from economic hardship and had no criminal record.

He added that this isn’t a simple matter of stealing money, but that the amounts collected through the county Department of Social Services came over a period of time.

Arraigned in Town Court were:

Lynn A. Ryan, 46, of 9403 Route 11, Winthrop, is charged with third-degree welfare fraud and two counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. From Oct. 23, 2015 to Oct. 31, 2017, Mrs. Ryan is alleged to have received $15,894 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Georgeanna L. Aldous, 47, 169 Rowen Road, Apt. A, Lisbon, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud. From June 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, Ms. Aldous is alleged to have received $1,312 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Nancy G. Sherman, 27, of 242 Hayden Road, Richville, is charged with third-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. From Jan. 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, Ms. Sherman is alleged to have received $5,844 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Crystal L. Lalone, 39, of 6919 County Route 10, Lisbon, is charged with third-degree welfare fraud and two counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. From April 1, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2018, Ms. Lalone is alleged to have received $10,654 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Kandy L. Butler, 29, of 1106 Washington St., Ogdensburg, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud. From Aug. 1, 2014 to Jan 31, 2017, Ms. Butler is alleged to have received $3,906 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Brandi David, 41, of 210 Montgomery St., Ogdensburg, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud. From July 1, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2016, Ms. David is alleged to have received $2,046 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Sherri A. Scott, 51, of 720 Irish Settlement Road, Heuvelton, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud. From Sept. 1, 2017 to Dec. 15, 2017, Ms. Scott is alleged to have received $1,380 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Amber M. Morrill, 35, of 81 Pyrites Russell Road, Russell, is charged with third-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. From July 2, 2018 to Feb. 28, Ms. Morrill is alleged to have received $5,108 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Kerry M. Pelo, 36, of Benson Mines Road, Star Lake, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud and misdemeanor fifth-degree welfare fraud. From Dec. 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018, Ms. Pelo is alleged to have received $1,560 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Ashley N. Debiew, 25, of 252 County Route 46, Massena, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud. From Oct. 1, 2018 to Feb. 28, Ms. Debiew is alleged to have received $1,852 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Jessica L. Driscoll, 29, Ogdensburg, is charged with third-degree welfare fraud and two counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. From July 7, 2017 to March 31 Ms. Driscoll is alleged to have received $3,789.80 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Two Massena women had been charged later in the day and were arraigned in an unspecified court and were also released under probation supervision.

Star L. Perrin, 39, Massena, is charged with third-degree welfare fraud and two counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. The defendant is alleged to have received $31,573.94 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

Cara E. Dimon, 25, Massena, is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud. The defendant is alleged to have received $1,739 in public assistance benefits she was not entitled to receive after failing to accurately report income information.

The district attorney notes that citizens may anonymously report incidents of fraud in St. Lawrence County.

The Television Academy tonight celebrated the 70th Emmy Awards, recognizing excellence in primetime programming and individual achievement for the 2017 – 2018 television season.

The 70th Emmy Awards were broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on NBC. Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che and produced by Lorne Michaels with Done + Dusted, the telecast on NBC featured 26 awards, presented by celebrated performers from television's most acclaimed shows including Alec Baldwin (Saturday Night Live, Match Game), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things); RuPaul Charles (RuPaul's Drag Race), Benicio Del Toro (Escape at Dannemora), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), Tina Fey (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Claire Foy (The Crown), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), John Legend (Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Issa Rae (Insecure), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Saturday Night Live) and Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat).
