4. If you wrote a song about your love life, what would the title be? Write the first verse.

AN: I cheated a bit. I ignored the second part of the question. Also, this is MUCH shorter than the others I've posted. Sorry about that.

She swills the scotch around in the short class, circling the large sphere of ice that takes up most of the drinking vessel. Jill Raymond is a regular visitor to this pub, being just down the street from the police station. It was a place where she’d buy her team a round for a good day, or a round for a bad one.

It was a place where she would come to encounter strangers, partake in conversation, and subsequently satisfy her needs. Feeling the heat of another’s gaze, or possibly a slight paranoia, Jill raises her eyes from focusing on the glass in front of her to subtly scan the rest of the people sitting at the circular bartop. Her eyes fall onto a slightly younger woman sitting not far from her. 

She isn’t embarrassed by her sexuality. She isn’t embarrassed by her preferences. Some nights it’s men, some nights it’s women. On occasion, it’s someone who is in between the two. Sex...it’s all the same to her. Something to relax her, something to dull the pain of waking up without her partner next to her anymore. The loss of her partner has been the most difficult thing in the world to her. Far harder than she anticipated. Though Jill should have had some idea what was ahead. 

By the time Jill and her partner realized that there was something wrong and went to a neurologist, they were given the difficult news that her partner might have three months, six at best. However, they lasted for a year after. Brain tumor. A year of degradation. A year of being with someone who no longer recognized who Jill even was anymore. Death was a bittersweet end to her partner’s suffering. The hardest part, however, wasn’t that her partner wasn’t alive anymore, it was going to bed alone.

It meant dealing with her internal demons, dealing with the memories of her partner screaming in the night because they didn’t know where they were, dealing with focusing on the picture of her partner on her bedside table, reminding her of the worst parts of their lives. However, maybe those difficult times didn’t actually create the worst memories. Maybe the worst memories were created by knowing there would be no more with her partner.

Jill brings the glass of scotch to her lips, taking a longer sip than she originally anticipated. Feeling someone take a seat next to her.

“Can I buy you a round?” 

She should write a song about that, all the times she’s been asked that question. Giving a glance over to the younger person next to her, Jill nods, “that’d be great, thanks.”

2022 was the year I reconnected with my inner fan. After several years of having been packed up and set in the corner, talking only to herself in hushed tones, she took one look at Bernie Wolfe and Serena Campbell on a windy roof. Suddenly with a great whoosh she was set free again.

Thankfully I remembered that that Tumblr thing was the place for fannishness and not evil birdsite. Maybe it was a google search that brought me here, I don’t know.

And here I found a wonderful set of fun, kind, witty and wicked smart, fannish humans.

Thank you for accepting me into the social circle around the fire of fannish discussion and creation.

And thanks to Serena and Bernie, and Catherine and Jemma for just being!

I can’t wait to see what 2023 will bring!
