US importers were looking for a new Bruce Lee after #the star's untimely death‚ and this was the film they decided would revitalise the genre; dubbed and cut it was a smash hit (and became the #first film to earn an X rating in the US for violence alone). it's easy to see why; this is thrilling stuff even if Chiba's amoral #mercenary is a world away from Lee's dignified everyman (in the first act he literally sells a woman as a sex slave; you'd never have #caught one of Lee's characters doing that). the action is spectacular and grotesque‚ including a cut to x ray for a man's shattering skull #(the origin of those fatality screens in fighting games). it also leant it's name to the Street Fighter game series in an unofficial #capacity. lurid and nasty but a lot of fun and by god Chiba was a hell of a performer: where Lee was all about speed and control‚ Chiba is #like a wild animal‚ running up people's bodies and fucking them up while he snarls and pants. an acquired taste perhaps but i dig it #and it's not just action! Chiba brings real pathos to scenes of loss in the last act‚ and his murky motivations make for intriguing viewing

Two pages from (Tokyo) Otsuka Odori 1957, with participants: Temari 手まり, Tomoyakko 友奴, Fukumaru 福丸, Emiko 恵美子, Chôchô 蝶々, Okaru おかる, Jirô 二郎, Yaegiku 八重菊, Satoko 左斗子, Chiharu ちはる and Sayoko 小夜子. Otsuka has always been one of the smaller Hanamachi since its establishment in 1919. It is said that at its peak in the early Showa era, 700 Geisha called Otsuka their home. Apparently, this number dropped drastically even before 1945 - according to Wikipedia, Otsuka had 260 Geisha in 1931. 150 Geisha in 1965, 50 in 1977, around 10 in 2008, three in 2018. As of 2023, one Geisha remains in Otsuka.

#Kaette kita onna hissatsu ken #the return of the sister street fighter #street fightin' cinema #1975 #japanese cinema #kazuhiko yamaguchi #masahiro kakefuda #takeo kaneko #etsuko shihomi #yasuaki kurata #akane kawasaki #mei ho chang #miwa cho #mitchi love #jirô yabuki #masashi ishibashi #rin'ichi yamamoto #shôichi sakaguchi #akemi hayakawa #shunsuke kikuchi #yep these films have definitely settled on a set formula and aren't really deviating much from it #having apparently run out of relatives to be kidnapped‚ Koryu is this time dispatched to find an old friend who's gone missing‚ whilst #simultaneously looking after the friend's young daughter. the addition of a small child into the mix was something i was uncertain about at #first but i have to say if anything it makes Shihomi's bone crunching fights all the more thrilling that she has to shepherd a little girl #out of harm's way at the same time. the villain is pretty fun in this one (he's a gold obsessed mobster who recruits martial arts experts #and has them fight to the death to pick the best few to take on the lady dragon) and my heart was warmed to see Ishibashi back as yet #another sullen henchman (considering he's had a relatively minor role in each of the films he's been in so far‚ he's a real presence and #i always find myself watching him more closely than the main bad guy). it all ends in familiar enough fashion but truthfully there's not #mucj to distinguish this from the previous film (or the film before that)
