Summary: This case takes you to Las Vegas to investigate a kidnapping of a child. This bring back painful memories for Spencer that his mother says it’s all in his imagination. Did he dream it all or was it real? And how can he juggle that and your parents at the same time?

"Garcia, anything?" Hotch asks.

"It looks to be a disposable cell phone. I couldn't triangulate the call, but it did bounce off two towers. It means he's mobile, and I know he's moving within the Las Vegas limits. He didn't travel outside the city."

"It's just a start. As I said, the more he talks, the more we'll learn about him."

The front door opens, and Spencer walks in.

"This is Agent Reid. He and Y/N will be here all night just in case he calls back," JJ says.

"I need to lie down," Amy sighs.

She heads upstairs by herself, and you turn to Craig with a gentle look.

"You should go with her."

"What'd you find out from the medical examiner?" Hotch asks once Craig is upstairs with his wife.

"We think that he's starving them," Spencer answers.

"That doesn't fit with the care he takes with the bodies. Starvation would be a form of torture," you say.

"There's no sexual assault. The torture could be a substitute for the sex act."

"I'll coordinate with Rossi and Prentiss. We'll call you if there's anything new," Hotch says to you and Spencer.

Both he and JJ leave you and Spencer alone, and you sit down on the couch in thought.

"What's going on through that big brain of yours?" he asks and takes a seat next to you.

"Something didn't sit right with that phone call. It's like his voice was computerized."

"Maybe he doesn't want us to know his real voice."

"Yeah, maybe."

You two sit and talk until it's time to go to bed, and you get set up on the smaller couch. You're about to get settled in when you get up and make your way over to Spencer. He looks up at you in confusion, and you lean down to kiss him goodnight.

"I love you," you smile.

"I love you, too."

You get back to your seat, and before you know it, you and Spencer are out like a light. You're not sure what time it is, but you're woken up in the middle of the night to Spencer screaming your name. Your eyes are heavy with sleep, but when you hear Spencer, you know he is having a nightmare.

You shoot up and rush over to him.

"Spencer, baby, wake up. It's Y/N." He gasps awake and looks around for you, and he collapses into your arms. "It's just a nightmare. You're safe now."

"What the hell's going on?"

You look to the stairs to see Craig and Amy on the stairs.

"Everything's okay."

"You wake us up by screaming, and you think everything's okay?" Craig asks.

"He just had a nightmare. We're so sorry. Just go back upstairs and try to get some more rest. It was just a misunderstanding. Everything is fine, I promise you that."

Craig sighs and does what he's told, but Amy stays on the stairs.

"Are you okay?"

"It was a dream. I'm really sorry," Spencer sighs.

"Was it about Michael?"

"No."

"I've been afraid to close my eyes. I'm scared I'll see him die."

"I know it's hard, Amy, but I need you to try and get some sleep. I am sorry for the disturbance."

Amy sighs but does as she's told.

"I'm making everything worse," Spencer whimpers and sits back down on the couch.

"Baby, these cases get to all of us."

"I'm losing it in their living room, and I'm dreaming... I'm dreaming about dead kids and I'm covered in leeches."

"What is scaring you?"

You take a seat next to him and pull him into your arms.

"This boy's gonna die and there's nothing I can do to stop it," he whispers.

He rests his head on your chest, and you rub your hand up and down his back to comfort him. You two stay like that until the morning. This is the day of the funeral, but Amy isn't too thrilled about going. Hotch, JJ, and Derek came over to check how last night went, but you keep Spencer's outbreak a secret.

Amy and Craig get dressed up in their best black clothes, but Amy is having second thoughts about going.

"I can't do this. I'm sorry."

"What are you doing?"

"I'm not going to the funeral."

"We talked about this."

"No, you talked. I listened." She turns to Hotch with an exasperated look. "You're asking us to go to the funeral of a five-year-old boy. We're going to watch them lower his body to the ground, and the same man who killed him has our son."

"Amy, if he happens to be there, you might scare him into a reaction. We're looking for anything that might draw him out."

"I can't watch them bury a child knowing that we're next," she whispers.

"We feel like this plan has a reasonable chance of success," Derek says.

"What do you consider a reasonable chance that I will ever see my son again? Ten percent? Twenty?"

"I understand if you can't do this," Hotch says, "but if you can, we need to talk about who we're looking for."

Hotch believes the man your team is looking for is a white man in his late twenties to mid-thirties. Judging by the quality of the clothing he put his first victim in, Hotch believes he comes from a middle-class background. This is not someone who is going to be at the funeral in a high-end or well-tailored suit.

People like him often pay close attention to the parents of the most recent boy to be abducted, so Craig and Amy will be watched. You'd be watching for someone whose focus is on them instead of the service itself. He could be driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, so you'll have to memorize license plate numbers in case one of them happens to be the person you're looking for.

This unsub dumped Ethan far from the city, but he didn't try to hide it. In fact, it was close enough to the road that it could be seen when he drove by. That tells you he is trying to separate his actions from himself. If he wanted to see the body from the road, it could mean he's remorseful which is why you believe that he'll be there today.

"Okay. If you sense someone looking at you you need to tell us. Humans are conditioned to feel fear. The little hairs on the back of your neck? They tell us the truth."

"JJ will stay here. If the phone rings, she'll say she's a family friend and that you're at a funeral," Hotch says.

"You can do this," you whisper to Amy. You look around for your boyfriend, and you notice he isn't downstairs with everyone else. "Excuse me." You walk upstairs and head over to Michael's room where Spencer is. "Hey, we're almost ready to go."

"You know, they're right. Odds are we'll catch the unsub when he dumps the body or when he tries to snatch another kid."

"I know the odds, Spencer," you sigh.

"It's weird. Some things never go away. When I was a kid, every boy I knew had piles of dinosaur toys."

"Not you, though."

"No, I had books and notebooks that my mom filled with poems by W.S. Merwin and songs by Bob Dylan. She liked it when I memorized them. She was convinced that they were watching us and writing songs about our lives. Basements are the first part of a house to be built, right? So, if you're having recurring dreams about a basement, it kinda speaks to the core fundamentals of who you are as a person."

"I thought you didn't believe in dream analysis."

"Freud's been discredited but Jung still has his merits. I just realized that I've been having different versions of my nightmare since I was a kid."

"Okay, how about this? We work together to find Michael, and when we're done, we'll look into your nightmares. I mean, you're having them for a reason, right? We can talk to your mom and see if she knows more about it. I want to help you ease your mind."

"Yeah, I'd like that," he nods.

You two walk back downstairs, and you're the first ones to leave. Hotch stays behind to help prepare the parents a bit more before they leave as well. There are a lot of people attending, but you're focused on singling out the unsub.

"There's a very full crowd here today, which I believe is part of the natural outpouring of grief over losing someone so innocent," the Catholic priest announces to everyone. "It is also a reminder that there is another boy out there who is in danger and in need of our prayers. Let's take a moment and pray for that boy. For his safe return."

You lock eyes with Spencer, and you can see him pleading for you. You quietly make your way over to him, and you grab his hand in comfort.

"What's going on?"

"I've been here before."

You're not sure what is going on or why he was here, but you need to put him on the back burner for right now. There is a man in the background with a camera out to record the funeral. You're not sure why he would, and Emily and Rossi are already on it. The man is startled by their presence, but he doesn't make a scene.

They take him off to the side to talk to him, and you know he'll be brought in for questioning. Nothing happened for the rest of the funeral, and Amy and Craig had to go back home empty-handed. You headed to the police station to watch over the questioning with the mysterious man, Walter Davis.

In your hand is a file that you had Penelope put together that you think might help Spencer and his nightmares.

"Where were you on the days Ethan Hayes and Michael Bridges were abducted?" Emily asks.

"I was home."

"Don't you need to ask what days those were?"

"Am I under arrest?"

"No. You love kids. You're just helping us with an investigation."

"You have no right to search me."

"Why? What would we find?" Rossi asks.

Walter doesn't answer.

"Oh, do you like videotaping other things besides funerals?"

The detective on the case comes in, but you don't look at him. You're too busy staring at Walter to focus on anything else.

"How's it going?" Detective Ashby asks when he and Spencer walk into the room.

"He's not our unsub. I would have felt Ethan and Michael on him. We can't rule out that the unsub might be a woman. There's no evidence, physical or spiritual, to say our unsub is a woman, but I have a feeling she might be."

"What's that?" Spencer asks about the file in your hand.

"Do you mind giving us a minute?" you ask the detective, and he leaves immediately. "I had Penelope pull it. Does the name Riley Jenkins mean anything to you?"

"No."

"Think back to when you were little."

"I had an imaginary friend named Riley."

"Spencer, Riley Jenkins was murdered right here in Las Vegas when he was six. That means you would have been four at the time. He was found in the basement of his own house, behind the dryer. He was sexually abused and stabbed, just like in your dream," you whisper.

Riley was a real person, and everything Spencer thought he knew is a complete lie.

"Where can we find Michael Bridges?" Rossi asks.

You walk inside the room and lean down so that your mouth is next to Rossi's ear.

"He's not the unsub. He's sick, but he's not the one we're looking for. I think the unsub is a woman."

"Okay, thank you."

You leave the room and hand the file over to Spencer.

"Come on, let's head back to Amy and Craig's house."

You two head back just in time to hear the phone ring. The unsub is calling again, and you're going to focus on the voice to make sure that the unsub is a woman. She may be using a filter over her voice to make her sound like a man, and that's her first mistake.

"Hello?" Amy answers.

You know Hotch has Penelope on the line to trace the call.

"Put the FBI on."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"I saw them at the funeral. Put them on!"

Amy hands the phone over to Hotch who has a stoic look on his face.

"This is Special Agent Aaron Hotchner."

"You were trying to trick me. You were trying to lock me down but you arrested the wrong person."

"Why don't we just slow down and talk?"

"No, we only have three minutes."

"We have as long as we want."

"Those aren't the rules."

Rules? Why can the unsub be on the phone for three minutes?

"You're right. Your rules. It was good of you to go to the funeral today. You must have really cared about Ethan."

"I loved him. His parents didn't deserve him. I took good care of him."

"Is that why you bought him the new clothes?"

"They put him in that silly blue top and lime green Oxfords. He hated those!"

Lime green Oxfords? Only a woman would note the color like that.

"Maybe when you're good enough to bring Michael home, you can tell his parents what he really likes."

"No. He's never coming home. I saw that so-called mother. She looked right at me. She knows he sleeps better with me."

"I don't know who you are, but please give me back my son! Please. I'm begging you. I'll do anything. Just don't hurt my baby. Please!" Amy begs.

"Your time is up."

The unsub hangs up, and everyone is silent for a few minutes.

for months now i have had this little story idea bouncing around in my head for an AU of Jetpack Joyride where Barry is stuck inside a big expermental time loop conducted by Legitimate Research to create an army of randomly selected time-travelling soldiers. the idea is very much still rough and i dunno if and when i'll develop it into a bigger thing, but it's a pretty cool idea and it's a twist on the JJ game that i've never really seen much exploration on.

basically, it focuses on Barry, who is the sort of Patient Zero of an experimental concentrated time-fuckery technology LR is working on. every single day, at exactly the same time, Barry goes out to work his salesman job, discovers the jetpack, breaks into the laboratory, takes it for a joyride, eventually gets hit by an obstacle and dies. the next day, Barry goes out to work his salesman job, discovers the jetpack, breaks into the lab, takes it for a joyride and dies. and he does the same exact thing the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day... he's pretty much stuck in a loop of the exact same events happening repeatedly every single day, and he has absolutely no idea about it. that is, until there's a glitch in the system, and Barry progressively becomes a lot more suspicious and paranoid about the situation he's in. the rest of this post is gonna be REALLY spoilery (like i literally just explain big important chunks of the story for several paragraphs) if i ever make this into a full-fledged fanfic, so i'm gonna put it under a keep reading thingy. also it is... quite long and convoluted lol.

as the story goes on, it focuses more on the mental degredation of Barry as he starts uncovering all these weird clues, slowly trying to piece together what's going on and driving himself insane, because every time a reset occurs, his memory of the previous loop ever happening is completely wiped and everything he did that day goes all the way back to square one. since the malfunctioning of LR's technology though, Barry has been getting little nuggets of deja vu and half-remembered fragments of dying before a reset. this eventually becomes him repeating things to himself, little phrases and codes over and over and over in hopes that it will persist into the next reset. this eventually becomes symbols stuck up on the walls of his room and then progresses to entire rituals to help him remember and little behaviourisms like tics and stims to let him know he's in another loop. he becomes more and more panicked and unsettled, paranoid that someone - or something - is watching him closely. additionally, he keeps having disturbing dreams in the early hours of the morning before he gets up to go to work, ones that are symbolic and prophetic, as if they're trying to warn him about something. i've had concepts of him waking up on top of a pile of millions of mangled carcasses that all look exactly like Barry, and having on them them forcefully grab onto his leg and pull him down with the rest of them. it's kinda like the nightmare Woody has in Toy Story 2, but like, dead guys everywhere, lol.

the backstory of this whole thing is kinda insane. basically, Legitimate Research is a sketchy government funded facility that's doing secret time experiments to create the strongest beings for a purpose that's somewhat similar to Brains' Zomb Bomb plan from AOZ (i haven't fully decided yet). Barry is someone who has been randomly selected for their newest version of the concentrated time loop experiment, where patients will be put under looping tests to extract data about their strength, agility and performance and decide what they need to supplement them with in order to create the perfect soldier.

Barry was 22 years old when he was selected. he was actually a relatively normal local Fish N' Chips vendor living in New South Wales, but one day, when he recieved an exciting letter in the mail about a new ambitious job opportunity, he completely disappeared without a trace and seemed to have been entirely erased from the minds of everyone he had ever known. Barry had actually been kidnapped and ensnared into a mind-experiments facility of the laboratory, where they proceeded to wipe his mind, proof of his existence and his entire personhood up to this point, and replaced all of it with fake memories to fill in the gaps. he was then placed in stasis and to be injected with high doses of strength drugs as they crafted a new life for him behind the scenes. a new house, in a new state, all with new stories and memorabilia meant to be lived out by new person. now, he was Barry Steakfries in Queensland, a rough-around-the-edges guy with a passion for action movies and destruction. he was a revel with a thirst for chaos and freedom, but he just didn't have the means to achieve it yet. it was all according to plan.

a big part of the story i want to tell that involves him is that at some point, Barry tries to break free from the time loop by doing something different. this takes a lot of pre-planning, memory rituals and repeating details to himself, but after he wakes up from a reset and gets out of bed, he hesitates, choosing to go to a different place to sell his gramophones that day. he deliberately tries his best to avoid Legitimate Research's headquarters as much as he can, and while he doesn't completely remember why he's doing it, he has a deep gut feeling that he should stay away from them at all costs. so he does. and at first, it goes well. the day is different, his choices seem to actually matter and for once, the feeling of deja vu isn't tearing him apart... until a crazy freak accident happens that forces Barry to die and reset the time loop again, wiping away everything he had done that day. Legitimate Research is now forcefully trying to stop him from knowing what the hell is going on by forcing him to die with each now discovery he makes, and Barry has to figure out more and more creative solutions to averting their surveillance and trying to get the hell out of the loop.

Craig will also be involved with the story too!! i'm not exactly sure what exactly the events leading up to Barry discovering and meeting him would be, but it'd be kinda halfway-late-ish into the story where Barry manages to cut off LR's surveillance of him, breaks into the laboratory and searches through its archives for anything relating to time. during this raid, he accidentally discovers the true Patient Zero to this time experiment: a broken, decrepit shell of a man who has been hooked up to a set of wires and locked away deep into the laboratory, never meant to be discovered by anyone, only known simply as #000 'Craig'. Craig was the very first human they used to run an early prototype of these experiments, but through malfunctions in the threads of LR's technology, he ended up knowing too much and tried to break free from his time loop, which resulted in him being dragged out of reality and becoming completely detached from his own time, stopping his aging process completely and practically allowing him to exist forever and persistently through every reset unaffected. LR relocated him and considered him a catastrophic failure, locking him away in a cell deep in the bowels of the laboratory before destroying and erasing every archive of him ever having existed in any point in time. and now, the same thing is about to happen to Barry if he doesn't figure out a way to stop what's happening quickly. Barry, outisde of LR, is the only one who is aware of Craig's existence in this timeline. Barry makes a vow to make sure that he will never ever forget Craig, no matter what happens to him, no matter how many times his timeline gets reset, because he is the only other person on the whole world who truly understands what he's going through.

at the very end of the story, when Barry finally escapes the time loop and is about to enter into a new reality where none of this ever happened, he reaches out a hand to Craig and offers he come with him to live. Craig, however, rejects the offer, sadly confessing to Barry that because of his disconect from the threads of time progression itself, Craig must stay behind and be erased along with everything inside this one and let Barry live his life. Barry protests, insisting that his life wouldn't be complete without him and that they've already gone through so much together, but Craig assures him that this is the best for the both of them, and that Barry must leave him soon before the window to escape closes. Barry gives Craig once last goodbye, holding him close and basking in his presence for the final time. he closes his eyes, presses his head against Craig's and whispers "I promise I'll never forget you." before he slowly lets him go, not breaking their locked gaze on each other for even a second as he steps into the portal and ventures into an entirely new reality, never to return.

i want there to be an epilogue part where Barry starts his new life and goes looking for a place to stay, and he comes across the place where LR used to be, which is instead occupied with a big square fence plot and a sign that says "UNDER CONSTRUCTION: NEW RESTAURANT TO BE BUILT". Barry stares at it for a moment and reflects on everything that has happened. all the hellish experiments that were once held inside this very plot of land, all the trauma he went through to get to this point, Craig's sacrifice, everything has lead up to him standing here, in the right place, at the right time, to finally live the life he should've had to begin with. eventually, he turns away, continuing to walk down the street. he should go check that place out sometime.

Its going DOWN in the JJ fandom +theories

A new short released which made the MAIN SHIP now VERY weird as Craig is now related to Barry in some way, but everyone in the fandom is well aware of this fact at this point

like, come on, they ARE related in some way. I'm gonna share my theory below, but, like, there are SO MANY other paths to go and Halfbrick does the one that wrecks what a lot of the fanart is the craig x barry ship.

But moving on from this, I'm interested in what path HB is going to take, like, is Craig going to be his dad or brother, or are is Peter Simpkins, the man that all scientists are cloned from? I think the latter would be much more interesting, as the y have NEVER touch on this after the science crew was introduced

like, THEY WERE SETTING UP SOMETHING THAT NEVER REALLY PAID OFF!!!

So I'm thinking the story line is going to be Barry digs to see what's going on and investigates Brains or a member of the science crew, and they let something slip about Peter Simpkins which Barry researches. He sees a picture of hm which looks just like his dad, he finds out he died in whatever year but actually ended faking his death, and settling and having Barry. Brains then obsessively made duplicates, trying to make his friend.

Better yet, what is Barry HIMSELF is a duplicate. Going into full on conspiracy's, but :p

Elias' sentencing is going through next week but of course Elias will find a way to delay it or make things work in his favor

This episode was another good one, but they could've put up a disclaimer or warnings considering the mentions of rape and the reveals of a stillborn baby
