Book: Illidan by William King
Reviewer: Jes (JLHart on tumblr)
Plot summary: Illidan the Betrayer: since the early days of Warcraft we’ve watched the rise and fall of this dark twin. But all of the stories so far have been told from the views of outsiders. How does “the Betrayer” defend his actions? A story that takes place during the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade expansion, this gives readers a glimpse into what was going on in the Black Temple before the fall of Illidan.
Would you recommend this book? Yes.
If you liked this you should read... the War of the Ancients series by Richard A. Knaak.
Other thoughts: I am a HUGE fan of Illidan’s plot line. I’ve read and re-read the War of the Ancients series, and Burning Crusade was my favorite expansion (before Legion, of course). This book was awesome. It explained the steps that led up to the fall of Illidan, and gave you insight into all of the Betrayer’s plans. It answers so many questions, and makes you have a lot of feelings for Illidan’s gray area. There are a few other perspectives in the novel, including Maieve, and a new Demon Hunter. It gives you a look into the brutal process used to become a demon hunter, and the kind of people who decide it’s worth it. This book was a great read for people who are into Warcraft lore. It’s well written and a unique look into this part of Illidan’s life.

Book: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
Reviewer: Jes (JLHart on tumblr)
Plot summary: Three sisters, three talents, three ways to die. Katherine will kill you with her deadliest poisons while she herself drinks from the same cup. Arsinoe will maul you with her familiar then bury you in a garden created by her own hand. Mirabella will turn the very elements themselves against you... or so it is said. For generations the three queens have battled for the right to rule their magical land, but these three sisters are not quite as they seem. Weak, emotional, and unwilling to give up the homes and families they have built for themselves, will they be able to do what needs to be done? To kill who needs to be killed?
Would you reccommend this book? Yes.
Best quote: “My whole life I have heard that it has to be her. That I have to die, so she can lead. That I do not matter, because she is here.”
If you liked this book you should read... Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Other thoughts: I loved the stark contrast between the three girls and the places they grew up in. A gothic and brutal high society, a free-spirited and earth loving small town, and a strict but cushy convent. The contrast in the environments shows up in the girls themselves, whether they embrace their culture or rebel against it. The surrounding characters are all too human, with infuriating faults and frustrating methods, but interwoven into a the plot in such a way that you couldn’t imagine the book without them. This book is a bit slow moving, but the ideas were original and left you guessing instead of predicting. The ending made finishing the book entirely worth it.
