Honestly my favorite era of the sound of Patrick’s voice was after the hiatus where he finally found his actual voice and stopped being scared of it. I love hearing this especially in SRAR, PAX AM Days, and AB/AP. Some of my favorite instances, especially of the soulful, gritty, low notes, are in Death Valley, The Mighty Fall, Jet Pack Blues, American Beauty/ American psycho (the title track), Novocaine, Twin Skeletons, We Were Doomed From the Start, Love, Sex, Death, and American Made. Yes, I love the old sound too, and I LOVE Soul Punk, and I love MANIA and SMFS, but there was this era where, after his journey in his solo career, he implemented that power and confidence and HEAVENLY voice and experience into FOB’s more pop punk sound. SO GOOD. AB/AP is climbing the charts for one of my favorites- I’ll always be a Folie number one stan (I am listening to West Coast Smoker as we speak), but MAN the GRIT?? THE HINTS OF PRIMAL RAGE AND JUST SHEER CONFIDENCE??? HELLO???? Anyways live laugh love SRAR-AB/AP was the best era (I am biased lol) also, I need Patrick screaming back. All I’ve got is Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying and Jock Powerviolence by Weekend Nachos. …and kind of Death Valley- it has those raw qualities.

Stiff Meds are for people who like both genres of music: 'Fast Music' AND 'Hard Music'.

They are a Hardcore band with Powerviolence influences, rather than the other way round. It's missing the dirge-y, slow, knuckledragging slow parts of Powerviolence. I mean 'Law of Saw' has tempo changes, but no obvious 'slow / mosh part' (maybe a slam-skank part though, mind you) . When watching these guys blow Spy out the water in London last week, the term 'Jock Powerviolence' sprang to mind.

The vocals too keep it in a tougher, hardcore lane. Which I know I prefer.

This is fast hardcore music for people who also like Rucktion records, and being from London.

i know the hiatus was a deeply emotional affair and it happened entirely because fob wanted to remain friends and that will always be something i keep very near to my heart. BUT.

i want so, so, so, so, SO badly to know the story behind both patrick and joe doing guest features on that one weekend nachos album. because weekend nachos, for the uninitiated, were an illinois-based hardcore and powerviolence band that were buddies with fall out boy while they were coming up in the scene. in 2011, during the hiatus, weekend nachos release “worthless,” which is the album where that infamous clip of patrick doing unclean vocals comes from (”jock powerviolence”). the whole thing is pretty emblematic of the hardcore scene as a whole and is also very emblematic of the trends that all the members of fob cited as reasons they weren’t really into the scene anymore and moved toward melodic pop punk instead, starting fall out boy in the first place. “jock powerviolence” is a fascinating track because patrick’s verse can be read a variety of ways - sniping at the people who called fall out boy sell-outs, taking aim at people who derided patrick’s solo efforts, etc.

HOWEVER.

ALSO on that album, weekend nachos release “hometown hero,” i mean they open the ALBUM with that song, which is all in all just a ruthless, unapologetic pete wentz diss track. like the entire thing is a scathing minute-long “fuck you, you fucking abandoned the scene that made you, your famous band is broken up, you’re all washed-out, and you fucking suck” diatribe toward pete wentz, and everyone KNEW it was about pete wentz, because everyone knew it was the infamous “self-important scene queen” from illinois, opening an album that was released might i remind you DURING THE HIATUS,

and is also incidentally the song that joe did some instrumentation for.
