George Foreman vs Joe Frazier 2 - June 15, 1976
In honor of Big George, a look back at his 1976 rematch with Joe Frazier.
Foreman has lost his world title to Muhammad Ali in 1974 in arguably the biggest fight in the history of the sport. Foreman, understandably, took ‘75 off and returned in 76 with the goal of rematching Ali. Only 27, it seemed like Foreman still had a bright future in the sport. He would come back to fight Ron Lyle, in a war that required Foreman to get off the floor twice to win. Not exactly the performance that would make people invest in a rematch with Ali.
Frazier, on the other hand, had just wrapped up his trilogy with Ali. It seemed that Frazier’s time as a heavyweight contender was coming to an end, though a win over Foreman would see him remain an attraction and possibly lay ground for a trilogy bout. But instead this would mark the end of Frazier as an elite heavyweight talent.
