One of the many things that make Jack DeJohnette one of the greatest drummers of all time is the fact that the man never shied away from leading a band. Among the many incredible groups he's led, Special Edition featured some of the most interesting lineups he's worked with. "Album Album" is the third recording made under that band name, and despite it not being as groundbreaking as the first, there are some truly innovative moments here - particularly in the use of a drum machine on DeJohnette's second-line-ish composition, 'New Orleans Strut', dedicated to his father. The rest of the album is dedicated to his then recently deceased mother, but don't think that makes it morose. Instead, as he mentions in the liner notes, the music on "Album Album" is meant to be a celebration of her life, and it is appropriately lively. The band features horn players David Murray (tenor), Howard Johnson (baritone & tuba), and John Purcell (alto & soprano), as well as Rugus Reid on bass and DeJohnette on synthesizer as well as drums. One of his best solo recordings, this is one worth hearing. John Purcell has been working on films since 1980, mainly editing dialogue. As well as being a dialogue editor, Purcell teaches sound editing and sound design to students in the Middle East and in Latin American.
