Usogui

I finished my re-read of Usogui and have been writing an essay in my head about Usogui x Leader but it's a lot and I don't think I can do it coherently. They have the best kind of complicated relationship. They don't understand each other, they understand each other better than anybody else. They met when they were teenagers and that meeting probably changed the course of their lives, but at the same time it always had to be this way. They're completely different, they're the same. (major spoilers through to the end of the manga, but none of it will make sense unless you've read it anyway)

Souichi's perfectionism and control against Usogui's devilish chaos - but they are both always planning, always thinking 100 steps ahead. Usogui challenged Surpassing the Leader the first time knowing he would lose, but even though Leader defeated him he didn't have him killed. Madarame Baku's life was owned by him. Baku saw Souichi's mother's video tape telling him to control all other evils by becoming the biggest evil and I don't think it's anything as sweet as Baku taking on that destiny for himself to help Souichi, but that is what happens. He's the Lie Eater in a world of liars. But I don't think he ever accuses Souichi of lying. I don't think Baku set up his entire life, the whole manga, just to have Souichi recover all his memories and overcome his self-destructive perfectionism, but that's what happened. I do think Usogui did all those gambles leading up to the second Surpassing the Leader to make Kakerou stronger, but for himself or for Souichi? He used Souichi's greatest weakness against him to win (his memory loss), just like when Souichi used Usogui's greatest weakness against him during the first Surpassing the Leader (his lack of loyal friends). Baku, who is always, repeatedly, willing to gamble his own life - to the point of letting himself almost die or completely die as part of a strategy to win - and has always had zero problems with his opponents dying when they lose - also made plans for saving Leader's life.

To be clear, they are both so completely uninterested in sex (and women) that it seems impossible to really put them together like that. Hell, them gambling against each other is pretty much as intimate as it's possible to get.
