thinking of annabeth and thalia and the writers have the potential to do the best thing ever (strained relationship).
walk with me, annabeth’s changed literally and figuratively, she’s not that 7 year old thalia was on the run with and her friendship with percy what they’ve been through together has helped her lower her guard and thalia will still remember her as that kid she looked after.
it’ll be hard for her to adjust to everything that’s changed in the world and her two friends/siblings drifting from each other and being totally different from when she last saw them and that’s where part of her gripe with percy comes from (jon steinberg i love you)

"[...] I think the thing that was most interesting to me about [Annabeth] was that she was just as lonely as Percy was, without a mom who loved her in the same way. And so, what does it mean to grow up like Percy did, feeling like there's no one like you, and you can't really connect to anybody, and not have Sally telling you it's okay? And so, from there, it felt a little bit like, that's probably a kid who maybe struggles to make friends in a meaningful way, or a kid who doesn't know what it's like to have a friend who's a real peer who can understand where they're coming from. That story's in the book, and to kind of bring it out in the mix and let that be the way we approach the launch of Percy and Annabeth, so that what you're watching in the first half of the season is them realizing, "You're the first person I've ever felt this way about." [...] If you feel that while you're watching it, then we're on the fairway, at least, I think, in terms of where we should be and, hopefully, we're pretty close to the bullseye of where we want that story to go, eventually."

"A thing that stuck with me is that the Iliad is a story about the two, in greek, it's nostos and kleos. Kleos is glory seeking, and nostos is homecoming. And in that is kind of all of drama. Achilles is a glory seeker-there is no pull for him towards domestic life-or towards going home. And the Odyssey is all about, that's all it's about-is going home. And to me, when I get nervous or confused about a story, I try to figure out where those two pieces are in orbit of whatever the central character dynamic is because it tends to clarify things."

“Luke occupies a range of functions for her. He’s her oldest friend. He is not a peer. Her desire to be an adult comes from feeling like a kid around him. I think that betrayal is trauma. Your mom won’t talk to you, your dad kicked you out.. to have this one person you felt was in your corner… turn out to be dishonest, is hard to come back from and exciting in terms of storytelling where that goes over the next 4 seasons.”
I will never recover from showrunner Jon Steinberg on @latinopercy’s podcast talking about Annabeth and Luke’s relationship.

Now that Percy Jackson is official renewed I get to pitch my Black Sails inspired brainrot.
So the first half of the second season of Black Sails has a flashback arc in London that explains Flint’s backstory. It’s extremely effective and has some of the best reveals and fascinating dynamics in the show. (Just ask any Black Sails fan about the fucking clock)
I propose that PJO season two use a similar flashback structure to explore how young Annabeth, Luke, and Thalia got to camp led by Grover.
Why?
Oh boy. Play The Tree on the Hill from the TLT musical because I want to be sad.
1 Grover is captured for most of the book and since satyrs age slower than demigods you can have more for Aryan to do. Give the goat screen time!
2 It establishes Thalia more concretely and adds stakes to the quest to save her tree. We care about her and don’t want her to die again. (And you can cast Thalia without giving away the reveal at the end of the book “she’s just there for flash backs 😜”)
3 It gives the opportunity to see Luke’s radicalization on screen. What happened to make him want to betray the gods and how might he yet be redeemed? This could be juicy especially if different characters are remembering at different times in the season. What did Luke see vs. Annabeth vs. Grover and how do they describe it to Percy?
4 Tiny Baby Annabeth and an explanation for her fear of Cyclopes. Might add a bit more tension to the quest for Cyclops island, am I right? Her relationship with Luke is also extremely important and seeing them interact pre-betrayal will help set up latter seasons (looking at you Titan’s Curse and Last Olympian)
5 I, personally, could point at the screen and say look they are doing Black Sails again! (Which I know you are capable of Steinberg and Shotz! I saw your 4.09 sword fight in PJO. I noticed. Nothing gets past me.)

The thing that struck me when I watched Percy Jackson 1x08 was that the exec producers, Dan Shotz and Jon Steinberg, wisely borrowed from their own playbook when writing the episode.
Basing the episode around a previous training interaction between Luke and Percy, before the latter left camp on his quest, is the same narrative device Shotz and Steinberg used in Black Sails 4x09 (arguably one of the best written episodes in any show I've seen) in which the events of the episode are based around a conversation between Flint and Silver that occurred as they trianed together prior to the assault on Nassau.
In these episodes, both pairs of characters sharing a moment of instruction and understanding before one/both of them depart on a mission which will result in their relationship being irrevocably changed.
You know what they say - if it ain't broke...

I think the idea that we had at the beginning was that– at the beginning-beginning – was that it was a story about– I think we've even talked about this before– it's a story about a guy standing on a rock in the middle of the ocean shaking his fist at civilization, and that eventually he started to make that mean something, and terrify them, and win, and that he would be undone by the least likely complication, you know, a guy who could take on an empire and could change the world is undone by nobody, by somebody who – and I think that was why it was always important to me that I didn't want to know where Silver came from – it was important to not know where he came from...
Because it kind of made him nobody, it made him this person who was just a guy, and wasn't important and wasn't– there's no twist to how he's connected to the story. He's just a guy.
Yeah, yeah, in a weird way there's this kind of strange catalyst– I guess catalytic reaction between the two of them that neither of them saw coming, but to us he's just a guy, to the story he's just a guy and somehow that ‘just a guy’ is the undoing of a giant, and that felt right, also, that felt like it was somehow weirdly baked into the spaces of the book, of Treasure Island, without ever really being there.
