Joris Rühl — Feuilles (Umlaut)
French clarinetist Joris Rühl has worked in a variety of composed and improvised contexts with musicians like Michel Donéda, Xavier Charles, Ninh Lê Quan, Eve Risser, Axel Dörner and as a member of Orchestra Onceim. But by my count, Feuilles (leaves in French) is the first release centered around his compositions. Over the course of 50 minutes a group of like-minded musicians including the composer on clarinet, clarinetist Xavier Charles, Jonas Kocher on accordion and Toma Gouband on percussion navigate their way through the patiently modulating open-form composition. Rühl’s orchestration maximizes the full range of microtonalities, rich overtones and burred timbres of paired clarinets, Kocher’s command of the accordion’s reedy shimmers and half-stopped wheezes, and Gouband’s expansive, delicate palette of drums, percussion and abraded surfaces activated with mallets, stones, branches and other found materials.
The release is accompanied by four video excerpts from the recording session, revealing some of the strategies employed. The two clarinetists sit across from each other enveloping the exacting textures and timbres of Gouband’s gestural activities and Kocher’s hushed, organ-like harmonics and open-bellows hisses groans and gusts. Watching Gouband as he thoughtfully chooses from his table of drum sticks, leafy branches, array of smooth and coarsely textured stones to activate bells, tuned bowls, cymbals and a large floor tom and transverse bass drum is transfixing. These clips provide an intimate sense of the balance of form and freedom as the four traverse Rühl’s score.
But on to the recording itself. The piece begins with hushed harmonics colored by the micro abrasions of rubbed stones and the resonant sounding of a beaten drum. The four patiently let the sound accrue over the course of the first eight minutes of the piece, letting densities subtly ebb and flow. The introduction of pattering percussion and the gently welling of accordion chords signals a shift toward a more active section of the piece as dynamics build. Skirling clarinets pierce the calm like oscillating sine tones, morphing into buzzing overtones and whistling harmonics that settle in to lower registers buoyed by low end accordion. And then things break into counterpoint honking clarinet lines cascading against thundering drum resonances. The piece progresses with a section of atonal hocketed lines transitioning to sputtered percussive reed pops, key clicks and metallic crumples resolving into long tones that quaver against each other. Here, hints of tonality provide an effective contrast to what has proceeded. As the piece moves toward its final section, densities gather around the lower registers of the instruments and the pacing slows to mirror the hushed opening moments of the piece. Rühl’s compositional form and the masterful reading by the members of the group weaves all of these morphing elements into an engulfing variegated whole.

Marina Cyrino is a Brazilian flutist and sound artist based in Berlin. She works in the fields of improvisation, composition and performative installations. Her flute playing is characterized by singular techniques developed through the use of internal amplification. The rhythmic use of the flute, the extensive use of objects and balloons attached to the instrument, and the use of disassembled flute parts are other distinctive elements of her playing. She is a member of the Brazilian experimental music label Seminal Records.

Alexander Markvart - is a musician, member of theater projects and organizer of events and festivals. Born on January 5, 1987 in Kemerovo. Now based in Berlin. He is a notable figure on the Russian new improvised and experimental music scenes. Uses in many projects and performances a wide range of musical instruments: as quite common - piano, guitar, accordion, saxophone, trumpet, analog synthesizers, electric drums, flute, laptop, etc., and also various objects, wires, appliances, etc. Stylistically he works in a lot of musical genres from radical free improvisation, EAI, noise, hardcore, to well-structured projects, minimal techno and post-folk.
Founder of such polystylistic musical formations as Studio of Unconscious Music (SUM) and Siberian Improvisation Company (SIC!). Also in different years is a member of another experimental bands and projects - Sacrifices, Verevka, Radical Muzak Septet, MITLO, Klub Demboh, Inorganic Blossoming, PSVSV, Cherubs, Importunate Twins, Sekta Phoenix. Works and plays concerts in various projects with different musicians such as: Axel Dörner, Lucio Capece, Burkhard Beins, Mazen Kerbaj, Joke Lanz, Adam Asnan, Jonas Kocher, Fire! (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, Andreas Werliin), Ilia Belorukov, Joel Grip, Nick Sudnik, Michel Doneda, Bryan Eubanks and with many others.
———————————
Javier Areal Vélez (Buenos Aires, 1985) is an experimental music composer, improviser and curator. His recent work focuses on the coding of digital companions for the performance of live improvised music. Javier's electronic music develops around noisy polyrhythms of extra-human complexity to make the most deformed audiences move. He researches human+machine collaborations through the use of samples, synthesis, lights, and mechanical robots. Additionally, Javier has a long career as performer of prepared electric guitar. His characteristic style relies heavily on a primal technique that emphasizes timbre and rhythm over traditional forms, favoring intensity and dynamic contrast. Javier has released records on labels worldwide and has collaborated with artists such as Heiner Goebbels, Audrey Chen, Chris Pitsiokos, Violeta García, Brian Chase, Shayna Dunkelman and Jorge Espinal. He is a member of CALATO, KYSE and VVU and wrote commissions for ensambles Híbridx, Rotativo and Tempi. Over the past decade, Javier has performed extensively in Argentina and toured across South and North America, Europe and Japan. Javier is the founder and director of RUIDO Experimental Music Festival (active since 2017), and he coordinates the Sound Arts Center (CASo) of the Secretary of Culture of Argentina.

Tag 2: Kläham -> Haibach
09. Mai 2021
74 km in 4,5 Std.
Insgesamt 168 km in 10 Std.

faktoria is an event of machine beats, metallic sounds, and noises
JOKE LANZ(Berlin,Germany)
Turntablist Joke Lanz creates autonomous sound-cells that melt into a language free of any function. He combines ritual reductionism with anarchistic playfulness, atmospheric soundscapes with cut-up noise and physicalness with unpredictability: Massive scratches, walls of sound, grooves, loops, noises and voice modulations!
He collaborated with: Shelley Hirsch, Christian Marclay, Olaf Rupp, Ken Vandermark,Lasse Marhaug, Jorge Sanchez-Chiong, Strotter Inst, Christian Weber, Charlotte Hug,Audrey Chen, Ute Wassermann, Peter Kowald, DJ Olive, Sophie Agnel, dieb13, eRikM, Martin Tétreault, Christian Wolfarth, Jonas Kocher, Mat Pogo, Kazuhisa Uchihashi,Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, just to name a few.
Best known for his international acclaimed Noise project 'Sudden Infant', Joke Lanz is presenting his work since 25 years all over the world. Born in Switzerland and currently operating out of Berlin, Joke Lanz is one of the most prolific and profound artists working in the border zones where performance and body art meet Improvisation and Noise.

Soloist Apartment
A/D/M(from Over Sleep Excuse)との コンビでは”Second Apartment”を名乗り、 東京の地下シーンにて、 ジャンルに囚われることなく数々のバンドと共演。
MANGIRL
東海地区を中心に活動する、 experimental/breakcore女性ソロアクト。
SHINTARO
The Bad DJ(Unusual Way/破壊硬戦)
baptisma
G through vodka death!
Mionokage

sr028 - Blank Disc Trio / Ex You - Split
Spina goes further to Eastern Europe! We have prepared the split record of two Serbian trios, Blank Disc Trio and Ex You, featuring guest musicians. This is an improvised music in all its colors: non-standard use of traditional musical instruments, their preparations, electronic processing. Blank Disc Trio are veterans of improv scene, they have been around since 1997 and have performed at various European festivals. On their side, the unit consisting of electro guitar, electronics and saxophone were joined by a grand piano and a second electro guitar. This quintet produces a surprisingly delicate and chamber sound. Ex You is a modern but already experienced collective, one of the most prominent in Serbia. Electric guitar, electronics and percussion with invited cello; saturated and slowly developing textures attract attention in an unobtrusive way.

Split by Blank Disc Trio / Ex You
Reviews:
“The other two releases are both split releases and on the first we find two trios from Serbia, and I believe I heard of both of them before. From Blank Disc Trio I reviewed a CDR they did with Jonas Kocher, when they were called Blank Disc and they were two (see Vital Weekly 684). Now we find as members, Srđan Muc (electric guitar), Robert Roža (electronics, objects) and Georg Wissel (prepared alto saxophone). There is a bit of help by Dušica Cajlan-Wissel (piano) and Julien Baillod (electric guitar), each on two pieces. Blank Disc Trio with guests are most of the time a carefully playing unit, exploring all (well, almost all) of the sounds one can get out these instruments without wanting to sound necessarily like a guitar or saxophone. It makes the music also quite abstract, but I found it also a bit too careful; a bit more spice would do no harm, and as such Ex You do better job. This trio, Milan Milojković (electronics), László Lenkes (guitar) and Filip Đurović (drums) with guest Ernő Zsadányi (cello) may play in a much more conventional way, but with a lot more force to their end. Here the instruments sound as they were intended by manufacturer of said instruments, which is not bad, but could also be better. So a combination of Blank Disc Trio and Ex You: that's what we want.” (Frans De Waard, Vital Weekly)
