eddie’s annoyed with you when you’re not on time for hellfire.

you know he’s sensitive about starting on time, but still you were running late again. even though this time you promised.

but the mood slowly shifts to something else as time ticks on. you’re always a couple minutes late but nearly an hour? eddie is really frustrated, and his feelings are hurt. he decides to leave your character behind, the party left you alone, sleeping in a cave.

when they return to the cave later, theyre unable to save you from a bandit situation, and your character dies. eddie kinda feels bad, but you know what time the club starts.

what he doesnt expect is steve harrington bursting into the room, looking frenzied. the whole party stared at him, but he was locked on eddie. eddie approached his friend, worried about the look in steve’s eyes.

steve stood up straight, and cleared his throat. weakly he says, “something terrible happened.”

and when steve tells him about your car accident, eddie feels sick. his knees buckle, and steve has to hold him up. he’s totally disoriented by this news. his felt his heart beat pounding behind his eyes, and his ears rang loudly, barely registering the panicked talking going on around him

“theyre alive,” steve was shouting, but people weren’t letting him talk, so he had to keep shouting it over the hundred questions. they wouldnt be able to handle it. not again. not when max still hasnt woken up. “eddie? can you hear me buddy?”

but eddie was in shock. he was trying to blame himself. he was looking for the moment he somehow caused this.

“can you walk? ill drive you,” steve says, as gareth searches eddies pockets for the keys to the van. “dustin, get over here, help me get eddie to the car.”

as soon as they moving, the adrenaline starts moving through eddie’s body. he was able to break free of his friend’s aid and pick up his pace, and the three of them ran through the school and into the parking lot. the dim light steve parked by was flickering, putting a weak spotlight on eddie as he tugged the door handle on the passenger seat

“let me unlock it,” steve snapped, fumbling the keys in his hand. he dropped them, the pressure of eddie’s stare was kinda terrifying.

when they were in the car, eddie was finally alert.

“what the fuck is going on?” he snapped.

no one said anything. there was nothing they could say that would make eddie feel better, or calm down. steve sped out of the parking lot, blowing the stop sign. he shouldnt have, given the reason you were in the hospital.

eddie squeezed his eyes shut. he was wrong. he was petty and hurt and he thought you were being a dick but you were - he was gunna throw up - you were somewhere bleeding. you were laying on the asphalt after a violent car crash and he was thinking youre an asshole

“their character died,” eddie said. “we killed them.”

“its not gunna happen,” steve said, gripping the steering wheel. a statement he couldnt back up.

at the hospital, eddie barely waited for the car the stop before he was running inside, tripping over his own feet as he rushed to get to you. dustin was hot on his trail and steve was parking the car.

eddie saw nancy with her boyfriend, and when nancy saw him, she came over, putting her hands on eddies arms. dustin spoke with jonathan in the background.

“relax,” she said, “please breath. they’re okay right now. they’re in surgery, and its going well, okay?”

“wheeler?” eddie asked, eyes filling with tears he had no control over.

“it has to be fine,” nancy said. “sit with me.”

and with no other options he listened, following nancy to an uncomfortable plastic chair that squeaked when he sat. nancy held his hand over the stiff arm rests, but he didnt find any comfort. he didnt think he would until he was with you again.

jonathan sat beside nancy, giving her a sad smile and handing her a bitter coffee. he sat quietly, letting nancy give eddie her attention. dustin sat on the other side of eddie, also opting to stay quiet. what was anyone supposed to say?

honestly, the only thing eddie wanted to hear was your voice.

sharing some of my disorganized jojo musical thoughts now that ive had a week to sit on it and ive rewatched it several times over. i intended to wait to publish something like this until a subtitled version was available, but im not seeing any indication that thats happening any time soon so for now youll have to deal with my loose interpretations from my extremely rudimentary and rusty japanese… so take what i have to say about the finer points of characterization with a grain of salt. gratuitous spoilers below obviously, both for the original source material and the changes made in the stage production

my feelings are OVERWHELMINGLY positive. of course there are things i can criticize or that i would have personally done differently but oh man… i have literally not thought about anything besides this fucking show for a week. im 100% confident in saying this is a better adaptation of the source material than the tv anime. sorry to the davidpro staff, i respect their hard work and their love for jojo and their dedication to what is by any metric a pretty difficult property to adapt off of the page, but i dont know if i can ever forgive them for leaving half of the first episode’s storyboard on the cutting room floor in order to fit a standard half-hour tv slot, especially considering that what they cut is some of the really crucial character-building stuff. happily those scenes are not only reproduced in the stage version, some of them are expanded upon!

with the quick disclaimer that i’ve only managed to get my hands on the final 4/14 performance with shotaro arisawa and yoshihisa higashiyama, from what i’ve seen the casting is perfect. i’m sure there’s a rip of the 4/13 performance somewhere (i’ve seen clips) but i haven’t been able to find one… every single performer knocks it out of the fucking park, the cast chemistry is incredible and even the minor characters are loaded with charisma. and mamoru miyano… my god… mamoru miyano i owe you an apology. i was not familiar with your game. of course hes been killing it for decades at this point but i had soured on him a little bit recently because i felt like he was overcast in everything and i just didnt connect with his dnt reinhard at all, so when the casting was initially announced back in august i was underwhelmed, and of course my standards for the dio role in particular were astronomically high… i’ll go more into detail later in the post because i have so so many things to say about dio’s characterization here but mamoru miyano’s performance is like, life-changing. i had impossible expectations and he exceeded them.

sorry if im gushing. i am a hater by nature. its unusual for me to be so thoroughly pleased with something. im not even a musical theater guy. these are strange new feelings for me.

just to balance things out i’ll talk about a couple of the things that didn’t really work for me: first of all, the music is just ok. my initial draft of this post called the music “bad” but three additional viewings later i have warmed up to some of the songs. i don’t know if this is a shortcoming by dove attia as the composer or if it’s just me, as i said i’m not a musical guy and a lot of the genre conventions of musical theatre are not really the things i look for in music that i enjoy, but like… even at their worst they are serviceable. nothing here is sonically unpleasant to me. high points are “resolve of the ripple” (zeppeli’s hamon training song, a jazzy swing number - it’s simply catchy and fun to listen to) and the closer “phantom blood” (a sweeping ballad that reprises the earlier “light and darkness”/”golden spirit” leitmotifs into an epic duet between jonathan and dio as they join hands and walk off into the darkness together… made me cry! i wont lie! on every single one of my numerous viewings this one got me misty eyed!)

wait i forgot this is supposed to be the part where i’m being critical. ok my most loathed song in the musical is “dio’s world”. sorry dio nation. it doesn’t really work for me. i think this might be a case of my standards/expectations being too impossibly high because it’s not even really the worst song in the whole thing. and of course miyano eats it up so it’s not really his fault. i just find it kind of underwhelming… i find the melody a little grating, it’s kind of just a generic rock number, it’s just missing a particular je ne sais quoi…. the essence of dio isn’t there… lyrically though i am obsessed with the premise of dio recruiting his minions by selling himself as a kind of social revolutionary who is upending and inverting the brutal hierarchy of post-industrial victorian society with zombie blood magic. you win some you lose some.

the second sticking point for me is the costumes. they’re perfectly serviceable… adequate… but i mean when it comes to jojo “serviceable” and “adequate” costume design obviously falls well below what’s expected, right? a lot of the outfits have kind of a boxy, almost flat-looking kind of unflattering fit on the actors, which if i wanted to be generous i could attribute to the challenge of bridging the gap between these frail slender musical theater twinks and the two-meter-tall 250lb roided-out beefcakes theyre meant to be embodying. (bearing this discrepancy in mind a lot of the insane martial arts stuff in the second act doesn’t really land with the oomph that it should, but i also understand logistically why this kind of casting is not practical, and all things considered i think shotaro arisawa does a really incredible job of embodying jonathan joestar even though he kind of looks like i could snap him in half over my knee like a twig. he’s very cute. so i’m not mad about it.) of course, again, logistically, i understand that in a stage musical production, where actors only have minutes to complete costume changes, some sacrifices have to be made to the creative vision in the name of practicality. nevertheless this is jojos bizarre adventure!! i want to see some fucking baubles!!!!!!

which is all to say that… after carefully considering it for some weeks… i still have extremely mixed feelings about dio’s grink ass feather bathrobe look. it’s not that i dont think its something he could wear (the concept of dio lounging around in his gothic vampire palace doing re-animator style body horror experiments on the local wildlife in this “officer i have no idea what happened to my husband”-ass nightgown is nothing short of hysterical to me) but then he wears it into combat and i felt a little disappointed… it has the same unflattering fit issue as the other outfits in the show, and it is just such an un-araki-like design… where are the gaudy color combinations? the bizarre geometric patterns? the tease of an exposed boob/thigh/midriff? erina gets a stage-original dress design that i have fewer issues with because the excessive pleats and ruffles have more of an araki-esque sensibility, but every time i look at dio’s robe it feels like there’s something missing.  i’m going to choose to be nice about it because it’s not at all a deal breaker and, again, mamoru miyano devours the look. it’s fine. it’s always fun to have a new dio outfit. if anything, the fact that the blu-rays are being marketed as “2024 cast version” gives me hope for the possibility of a future production with a new vision for the costume design. (although the fact that this was such a difficult production - with stunts and pyrotechnics and moving setpieces - that its entire first week was cancelled indicates to me that the prospects for a future production from a different company are impossibly slim. i guess there’s always hope?)

in terms of the writing and the changes that were made from the original narrative, honestly i don’t really have an issue with anything that was cut. sorry if there are any diehard stans of Poco’s Unnamed Sister out there who are steamed that their favorite minor late phantom blood character got the axe, i kind of understand how you feel because i’ve been malding over david pro cutting the Danny Lore for eleven years, but i think it was the right choice and the story flows so much better. the real juicy meat at the core of phantom blood as a narrative and the thing that brings it head and shoulders above so much of the rest of jjba is the character-driven drama - that deliciously pulpy victorian gothic family tragedy - and the relationship between jonathan and dio. the musical beefs up the character drama and slims down the action-driven second half by trimming out the extraneous battles. the only real downside i see to this is that the absence of tompetty and his prophecy makes zeppeli’s arc and death feel INSANELY abrupt, but tbf that’s not a deal breaker for me. sorry zeppeli. you were born to die.

okay. okay. i think 1500 words into the post is enough fucking around so let’s talk about the real reason why you and i both know we’re here

musical dio is SO fucking sad. he’s positively wretched, you guys. he was born in a wet cardboard box all alone and forced to eat cement when he was six. he cries even more than he does in the source material and even when he’s not crying he frequently delivers his lines as though he is moments away from bursting into tears. back when the musical first opened i was snooping on the reactions on jpn twitter and one commenter said they could see miyano’s tears and snot from the nosebleeds even without opera glasses, a remark i initially assumed was hyperbole but that i now think probably was not. araki’s dio is certainly tortured and a deeply pathetic crybaby beneath all the cruelty and posturing, but changes in the musical and miyano’s embodiment of the character bring this pathos to the fore. he is literally haunted: dario’s ghost lingers, a manifestation of all of dio’s traumas and insecurities that emerges from the recesses of his memory to taunt him with the reminder that he will always be his father’s son, all the way up until the very minute that jonathan breaks down the door to his vampire lair. i am OBSESSED with this - not only for the obvious reason that i delight in dio’s suffering personally but also because kong kuwata is a delight and he fucking kills it every time. also lends itself to a category 10 leitmotif moment at the top of the second act when dio emerges from the charred ruins of the joestar estate singing dario’s theme and calling out to jonathan - if i had to pinpoint this is probably the moment when this musical stuck for me as the Real Deal. they Get It.

the first solo number in the show is dio’s disney princess I Want song (amazingly, simply titled “dio”) where he weeps for his late mother and his wretched lot in life, and then - in a creative decision that made me clap my hands and hoot and holler at my screen in real life - there is a reprise of this number (delivered, naturally, through tears) when dio is almost arrested for murder and decides to become a vampire instead. so there’s this amazing hopeful uplifting inspirational orchestral music accompanying the onstage action of dio ruthlessly slaying jonathan’s dad and then getting pumped full of lead by a bunch of cops. it is brilliant. 10/10 no notes. it’s moments like this that i think really sell the “softening” of dio in the stage version for me, even though i am historically Not A Fan of fanworks that take a similar angle - like, yes, he is sad, but specifically he is narcissistically obsessed with the spectacle of his own suffering, he is boiling over with bitterness and rage for everyone around him who (by his own estimation) could never hope to have suffered as much as he has. this sensitivity and self-pity he wallows in are not expressions of a guilty conscience or a desire to change - they’re entirely the opposite - every cruel and monstrous deed dio commits is always justified to himself because he is simply the saddest little boy who has ever existed. he has been done wrong by the world and so there is no limit to the depravity he may reasonably respond with. i’ve seen several commenters describe this as a drastically different interpretation of the character from araki’s dio (and someone told me on twitter that mamoru miyano himself has also said this, but i cba to go digging for an actual source so take it with a grain of salt?), but i… dont think thats the case! dio’s obsession with his own weakness and his self-perception as the eternal underdog (as compared to jonathan) are certainly more exaggerated in miyano’s performance, but i don’t think this is an angle to the character that’s been manufactured out of whole cloth. the genre conventions of the stage musical force the melodrama up to eleven and dio’s incredibly repressed angst is the most rich vein to mine for that. hair-trigger sadist dio is still here, it’s the same guy, he’s still killing people mercilessly, you’re just getting to see him sing a big ballad about his feelings instead of confining those to an internal monologue.

if anything, the exaggeration of dio’s pathetic/cowardly/crybaby traits combined with his megalomaniacal aspirations and bottomless well of cruelty is just right. it’s perfect. fucking around, finding out, and then trying to weasel his way out of the consequences with crocodile tears just so you don’t see him drawing his knife to cut you clean open… yeah. thats the stuff. thats my one true blorbo. sad to say i will love him for ten thousand years.

i think that might be all i have to say… or at least all i feel like saying here… most likely ill come back and edit this post later. i certainly have some additional thoughts and some more esoteric/controversial takes but they’re not suited for a public blog. real ones will understand. im keeping my eyes peeled for somebody to translate this thing but to be frank i am kind of enjoying this little corner of fandom as it is right now: just the asians and the true hardcore phantom blood phreaks. i have not had this much fun in jojo fandom in almost a fucking decade. as soon as somebody publishes an english version my timelines going to get flooded with all the most deeply annoying “kono dio da” “speedwagon waifu” reddit guys and 15 year olds and my suffering will proceed. unfortunately this is my lot in life and i am doomed to be here forever because dio put a worm in my brain

i think bylers are so close to getting the 'mlm shippers hate the female character getting in the way of their ship' title if they try a little bit harder. the amount of bs takes i have seen here is really just... something else. trying to portray el as an abuser and saying she forced herself on mike when mike didnt want it, and then blaming her for everything that exist in mlvn's relationship as if mike wasn't a participant in it, blaming el for lying even though mike has also been lying to her and is still lying (which is a popular take in byler community so make it make sense)? and this on top of it ppl wanting mike to have never loved her at all and wanting him to break up with her. the whole thing is just not great, lol, it is sounding like steve or billy fans who shit on nancy and the thing is el didn't even do anything actually, whereas you could maybe argue nancy didnt handle the breakup and relationship with steve or problems with jonathan that well.

well we already all have that title but i think you mean bylers are so close to earning it and i don't exactly disagree lmao.

i think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. people are afraid of being called misogynists so they preface everything they say about el with "i love el. because i love women. i'm not a misogynistic mlm shipper." or something to that effect and then everyone gets sick of having to say this (even though no one forced anyone like the people who have decided that we all collectively hate el are not reading these posts and if they are saying that will not change their minds) and think that everyone in this part of the fandom worships el like mlvns and redditors do when there was actually always el criticism like when was there ever anti-el sentiment censorship. i don't remember it. people were making i love el BUT posts 35 times a day. so yeah everyone gets sick of having to do that even though they didn't really...have to and then they go um since no one wants to say this i will. el is not a good girlfriend to mike. no one wants to say this because she was raised in a lab for the first twelve years of her life and doesn't know anything about social norms. like YEAH thank you for pointing that out we really hadn't noticed. that's why she shouldn't be in that relationship in the first place lmao.

people who think mike should never expect to have a relationship of equals with her because she still needs to be taught things he learned in the first twelve years of his life so expecting her to give him a big speech about how she loves him back or to give him a gift like he did at the airport isn't fair (redditors. they've said that) are missing the point that if the relationship can't be good because el is learning how to navigate the real world in real time as she's dating mike...then she shouldn't have been in a relationship in the first place because it's literally bad for her too. and when bylers make posts about how mike should get to break up with her because he's had no agency in the relationship...are you implying that mike has had less agency than the girl he introduced the concept of a relationship to who thought he was gonna be her brother and who didn't know how to tell what she liked for their first six months of dating. it's not a competition but if it was el would be winning it.

i know societal pressure is a thing but was lucas forcing mike to win el back at like gunpoint? i know mike probably feels like he owes it to el to be a good boyfriend for whatever reason like he promised they'd go to the dance together in season one and he's a paladin and they don't break their promises and he's gay and it's the 80s but god. he didn't want to say i love you in el's bedroom and he didn't he's not staying in this relationship until he's 40 she's not forcing him to do anything. he tried to win her back and said he loved her and she later kissed him and said she loved him back. could he not have said damn that sucks el i don't know if i actually want to get back together now :/ lmao like he didn't because it's a story and again the gay thing and she'd just lost her dad and everything else you can say to explain why he wouldn't want to say damn el i actually don't want to get back together now. but how is her saying she wants to be with him again TOO and him not saying he doesn't want to ANYMORE him not having agency. the only time you could argue his agency was taken from him is when will said you're the heart because el was dying lol. and even then he could've said anything so like he still had agency. or he didn't because it's a story but you get my point. a lot of it is self-inflicted a lot a lot and him feeling pressured to be in a relationship with el doesn't come from her pressuring him lmao. so i get wanting him to get himself out of it to a degree but if we're saying the one who has the least agency should get to "break free"? it's not mike.

Reasons I dislike Nancy Wheeler:

1) She just feels super two dimensional to me ngl. Even without taking a look at her character arc and actions, she kinda just.. exists for me

2) her whole personality can basically be summarised as: Independent woman who likes boys and guns. Yes I can and will look further into that if wanted in another post.

3) She is so condescending? Like all the time! Her opinion is the only valid one apparantly and everyone else is below her. Examples of this include: her treatment of Robin, her treatment of the kids, her treatment of Fred and many more.

4) She insults literally everyone. S1 begins with her insulting Steve's intelligence (which i have a lot of issues regarding not just for Nancy but all of the shows characters and I will follow up on this). S4 she insults Fred, a literal child following her guidance, for having differing opinions, IN THE 80S!! as people like to say when defending the shows harsher aspects.

5) her character literally never develops. S1 she began investigating Barbs death and never stopped. Held her feminist ideals *THAT I AM NOT AGAINST FTR*. Got given a gun and boys. And that was it for her. Every single season for her goes the exact same: Something bad happens, Nancy investigates, people doubt her and laugh, gets given a speech to carry on, is proven right, shoots the bad guy.

6) Does not seem to overly care about anyone else? S1 she did not GAF about anything going on unless it affected her. Will went missing? gosh Mike stop acting childish. Barb goes missing? Why is the world so unfair! Nobody is listening to me!

7) Like, she was only really investigating for her own career? In s3 and 4 in the least. She may have posed it to everyone else that she cared about the odd events, but she just wanted to be the first to get the good story. Like talking to Wayne Munson in the beginning and trying to invoke sympathy for her plight. It was just.. Not It for me.

8) she is selfish. Like i get she is a teenager, and teenagers are selfish, but... I would not like her irl unlike the other characters. Not one bit. She is always in everything for herself and she refuses to out herself in other peoples shoes for even a second. Mike is distraught over Will? Lets go have sex with Steve and argue with Mike. Steve wants to pretend a literal TRAUMATISING event didnt happen because he is also, a literal child? Nah he is bullshit. Jonathan decided not to fly down from California, despite literally being poor and having siblings to look after whilst pulling away from a ldr? Nothing she did there was wrong obvs.

9) the way she treats her partners is so horrible. Lets recap. S1- is dating Steve. Okay, so she lies to him about what she is doing with someone who TOOK PICTURES of HIS house without consent. Does not include him, her boyfriend, in her thoughts, and leaves him with the impression she is cheating on him. S2- still dating Steve. Lied to him for a whole year about her thoughts on their relationship. Gets drunk and calls him and their relationship bullshit while implying he is a murderer for something that is not his fault. Acts like it is not her fault when confronting him the next day. Proceeds to fuck off with Jonathan and have sex with him before even ending the relationship properly, and that is after insisting that there will never be anything between the two of you. S3 she just absolutely does not listen to a word Jonathan says and does what she wants whilst expecting him to drop everything for her and follow her around. S4 she puts the blame of their failing relationship on Jonathan and flirts with Steve.

10) she is really entitled. She is like the definition of a spoiled. She is handed things that she wants on a silver platter and is applauded when she gets it? Like she comes from what looks to be a upper lower/ middle class family in a nice meighbourhood with two parents, wanting for nothing, and does not seem to understand when people do not have the same constraints as her. Like she is okay to drop her job at the change of a hat but others actually need the money to survive? It is canon that Jonathan worked A LOT to help pay bills, and babysat Will, and she just, did not understand.

11) she gets applauded for doing the bare minimum. She showed up to help Eddie purely for the inside scoop and because she would look bad otherwise, and is HCed to be his new bestie? She tells Jason to fuck off? Shoots Vecna AFTER it has been set on fire? Like Hopper BEHEADS a whole ass demogorgon after being tortured and starved in Russia, but gets so little recognition.

12) literally risks getting her friends and family locked up/killed by the US government, for her guilt over killing Barb, and the want of a good story to publish. Like they were willing to shoot a shit ton of people for a child abusing lab who had no ides there was a child abusing lab *cough cough Benny*, and shoot a bunch of 11 year olds. They would have had no qualms about getting rid of them all!

13) literally abandons Mike, her BROTHER to go with her fresh BF at the end of s2! She was definitely not needed there, in fact she would have been more useful at the house with Steve and the kids, but nope.

14) Doesnt have a good relationship with her mother for what? Her caring? Like Karen Wheeler has her faults (Billy. Thats enough said) but noone can say she does not care about her kids. And Nancy just takes that for granted. This one is a personal slight, because a parent that offers up good advice, support and genuinely cares? That would be the life!

so i want to piggyback (heh) off of this post by @scrunchietown , specifically the monologue bit and the reactions we get from will and why we even get a shot of jonathan (which goes into my theory that jonathan knows abt will and mikes feelings for each other and why he’s important to byler outside of his own character arc too)

will’s reaction and finally knowing what mike couldn’t say all of the time they’re together in s4 is so important to bylers story because will is getting told this vague explanation from mike, who won’t outright say the thing he can’t say to el. not only do they have this talk once, not twice but THREE times goes to show how important this is for will to finally understand. will has been trying to save mike and el’s relationship every single time, because as much as it wouldn’t be satisfying for an audience member (or a byler i should say) will would rather mike stay his friend forever and see him happy than to lose him by confessing his feelings. but when mike has been pushing back every single time about this conversation, “a fight you cant come back from”, “i didnt know what to say” “im just some random nerd who got lucky superman landed on his doorstep” basically what mike won’t say makes him scared el won’t need him anymore. NEED. which sounds… a lot more like a caretaker, parent, sibling thing rather than someone who has romantic love for you would say. will can’t understand what is so important and crucial to mike and el’s relationship that he can’t say because he already assumes mike and el are in love with each other.

“what if they don’t like the truth?”

mike NODS along to this, he doesn’t deny this, he agrees that el may not like the truth.

will is hurt and confused when he hears what mike wasn’t telling el… but why does jonathan come into frame? a bit odd that they not only included will having a solo shot in mikes love confession, but they gave jonathan a solo shot as well (but not argyle?)

because jonathan has been watching byler interact all of season 4. he watched the way mike didn’t hug will, he watched will lie about the painting, he watched will mope over mike, he watched mike and will have a heart to heart for however long before interrupting, he barged in on their 2nd heart to heart, he watched mike and will the entire van ride AND the van scene— so if they’re giving jonathan a solo shot? what is it supposed to mean? what is the reasoning behind it? is it because will and jonathan just had their own heart to heart and he feels bad for will? partly… but that doesn’t really make sense from a storytelling perspective, if anything smth like what robin did to steve when jonathan and nancy reunited would have been more fitting if that were the case.

jonathan and will having a solo shot within mike’s monologue is meant to make you think, it’s meant to show insincerity because a love confession should be private and not in a high stakes situation. jonathan may feel bad for will, but he also knows mike isn’t telling the truth or that somethingjust isn’t right with this situation. (imo because i believe jonathan has clocked that mike likes will back)

considering the fact that will and jonathans heart to hearts wasn’t even MEANT to happen as well, says so much about the monologue scene if that conversation never made it into the show. 🧐🧐🧐

eddie thought that the worse was over when he survived the whole upside down ordeal. that was until his then hook up got pregnant.

‘are you going to keep it?’ eddie was pacing back and forth in the living room biting his nails. a bad habit he had ever since he was 10.

‘i guess so, if you’re okay with it’ it didnt hit eddie soon enough that he would be a dad. a whole dad taking care of his own flesh and blood. he finally graduated in ‘86. he would be a dad in ‘87.

the day lily was born was the greatest day of his life. he did not find out the gender until he saw the pink cloth wrapped around her. she was so soft and her head smelled like flowers, thats how he got the name lily. ‘hey babygirl, you’re so tiny’ the little girl in his arms reached out to hold his pinky.

baby mama up and ran before he knew it. she didn’t leave a note or anything. he was stuck with a baby and he had zero experience taking care of someone. he was grateful for steve, robin, nancy, jonathan, dustin and everyone for helping him. from feeding lily, playing with her, changing her, taking care of her when eddie got a job at a car shop. he was thankful for their help but it was his daughter, he had to learn all this things by himself too.

lily’s 1 now. he got the hang of taking care of her and knowing her little quirks and habits. she was a hyper little girl who loves lilies because of her name, hates the smell of paint, wants to play the guitar when she grows up just like daddy and has the cutest smile in the world.

‘lils! c’mon it’s time to eat dinner with dada and grandpops!’ eddie sees his daughter running with teddy in her hands. he remembers winning it for her when they went to a carnival and she never lets it go ever since.

‘asta’, she couldnt quite say pasta yet but it was one of her favourite foods and eddie would always try to save up to be able to cook it for her, or well, wayne would cook it, because eddie would just burn the kitchen down.

‘today, you’re going to aunt nancy and robin’s place ok? they’ll help you dress up and then we’ll go trick or treat, yeah?’ eddie help lily up to her kid chair while she tries to get the food in her mouth.

eddie wipes lily’s mouth after she finished devouring the whole plate of pasta. she definitely needs to change. ‘cmon pumpkin, let’s get you all dolled up’.

lily changed into a pink unicorn shirt with pink tights and a tutu. she loves wearing tutus, any colour, any day. her whole look was completed with two pigtails and if anyone were to look at her, they would not believe that this is eddie munson’s daughter.

eddie lifts lily up to put her in her booster seat. she has always been a fidgety baby so trying to buckle her in her seat is a hassle everytime.

‘lils, give your dada a break please, cmon sit quietly’ eddie has been trying to get lily to sit still for like 10 minutes now and he does not want to be late as he had to rush to cover a shift. eddie would have asked wayne to take lily but he couldn’t because he had an appointment.

after what felt like eternity, lily sat still with her teddy, drinking her juice box. eddie softly played some sabbath, drumming his fingers against the steering wheel, softly singing iron man. he hears giggling in the background and sees his daughter banging the empty juice box. huh, she likes metal as well.

‘lily! we missed you! come here honey!’ nancy squealed while walking to lily with open arms. once lily saw nancy and robin, it was like her teddy bear was forgotten and she sprinted towards them. eddie beamed at this interaction, he was glad that he had friends who loved lily as much or even more than he does.

‘i’ll be back in about an hour, just have to cover a shift real quick’ eddie checked his watch and he was glad he had about 10 minutes to spare. he crouched down and held lily’s hands ‘you behave for aunt robin and nancy okay? when i get back, you better be dressed up and all ready to get candy, yeah?’

‘-andy!’ lily squished eddie’s face and kissed his nose. eddie gave a small peck to her forehead and waved the three of them goodbye.

nancy and robin got a little house together and decorated it for halloween. well, robin was the one who wanted to and nancy just helped along. they had pumpkins and spiderwebs with some bat shaped lights. they also had a table with a big bowl filled with candy. it was about 6pm so a flood of kids should be arriving soon.

‘cmon lily, time to be the best dressed girl out there’ lily reached out to hold robin’s pinky and they went upstairs where robin and nancy had already laid out a few outfits on the bed. from a princess, to a bee, a clown and lastly, wonder woman.

robin and nancy let lily wander around to see which one she liked the most but after a few minutes, lily walked back to both of them with a pout on her face.

‘what’s wrong bug?’ nancy placed a hand on lily’s side while the other was stroking her hair.

‘you dont like any of this? this princess one is cute, it’s all pink, your favourite colour is pink right?’ robin held up the princess dress with a plastic crown attached to it. lily held it for awhile, inspecting it before throwing it on the ground.

‘aw lily, what do you wanna dress up as then? bee? wonder woman? clown? which one lily’ robin brought all the outfits to lily but lily just threw all of them. robin and nance are starting to get frustrated because they don’t know what’s wrong and they’re not sure what to do.

‘-ada! -ada!’ lily suddenly started jumping up and down while pointing to herself.

robin and nancy looked at each other trying to figure out what lily is trying to imply ‘dada? dada’s not here honey’ then lily started running to a small closet where it has some of her clothes when she slept over sometimes and started opening everything.

‘sweetie, no, don’t do that, lily honey, please, i just fold all those’ nancy rushed towards lily before she could trash the whole room. lily then hold up a hellfire shirt that eddie specifically got for her so she could wear since she liked how it looked on eddie.

‘yes lily, that’s your hellfire shirt, do you want to put it back?’ nancy began putting all the clothes back deciding she could fold it later.

lily pulled the shirt to her chest ‘-adaaaaa!’

robin came to sit down beside lily ‘do you want to dress up as dada? you wanna wear this?’ lily clapped her hands excitedly and began tugging the outfit she had on. robin quickly help her and replace the pink unicorn shirt with the hellfire one. nancy then found ripped jeans which were blue and lily already had on white sneakers. nancy also found that she could use a necklace she had as a chain for the jeans. robin ruffled up lily’s hair to make it look more poofy like eddie’s.

‘nancy, come here and look!’ nancy and robin backed away from lily and they looked at her in awe. she looked exactly like eddie. exactly a splitting image and they were so amazed.

‘you look adorable little munson, you wanna see yourself?’ robin scooped lily up and face her towards a mirror.

‘-ada! hero!’ lily giggled while pointing towards herself.

‘hero? dada’s a hero?’ robin bouncing lily up and down while having tears in her eyes. she knew how hard eddie worked to give lily a good childhood. before lily even came into this world, eddie had already been struggling so to know that somehow smart little lily sees her dad a hero, it definitely made robin’s heart swell.

‘aw baby, don’t cry’ nancy came behind robin and lily to give them a hug. ‘you are a sweet girl huh lily? your dada is a hero, now cmon, he’ll be here soon’.

eddie was pretty exhausted even though it was only an hour’s worth of work. the only thing he looked forward to was seeing his girl. ‘robs! nance! im here!’ eddie knocked on the door as he hears laughters in the house.

it took a few seconds for eddie to say something ‘i thought you wanted to be a princess sweetie or a superhero or something’ eddie sat down in front of lily and he was already about to cry.

1. will felt too awkward to tell her because it was clearly important to her

my og post was just a throwaway thought and indeed not to be taken too seriously but it did make me think about it more and ultimately just makes me appreciate that scene so much more than before

I actually think it's very in character for Will to encourage her project because I think that if it were Will in El's place, Jonathan would a 100 percent have told Will to do whatever he wants to do and not care about what anyone else says. So Will has been raised with that believe and passed it on to El.

Besides that, her project was creative and honest and heartfelt and Will would admire that and genuinely just didn't think there's anything wrong with that. Will also isn't cruel - he wouldn't think anyone would be cruel enough to make fun of El for making a project about her dead father.

And even if she might not have gotten an A if she didn't do the project as intended, Will would have thought she'd still get a passing grade because their teacher is definitely kind enough not to deduct too many points for El's choice - which was a correct assessment as their teacher seemed to be okay grading her on her presentation and visual aid regardless. And Will probably values integrity more than getting a high grade, especially as El seemed to like doing her project as such which was probably a contrast to her struggles with her other homework.

I even think it's possible that Joyce, who wasn't raised as loved and protected as her own children and who is very familiar with the cruelty of the world, did make a comment about it during dinner when El explained what her visual aid would be on. But that Will than brought up the "he was in the paper!" argument to justify El's choice - not because he wanted her to get bullied but because he genuinely thought it was a good idea for her project.
