Crikey's Helen Razer obliterates someone on her column: I grab popcorn and check out the equally inflammatory comments section on Twitter. It's like watching Q&A without a television. Sold.

It's been a crazy last 12 hours, and it hasn't stopped yet. But as I was rushing out the door, the Lord stopped me and reminded me of His faithfulness and beauty. Always take a moment... #crunchtime #sunrise #azsunrise #journoproblems

First Election Experience: Objectivity is Hard
Yesterday was my first presidential election--not only as a voter but as a journalist. I've watched elections before, but there is a whole new level of investment involved when you have directly affected the history unfolding in front of you. It was a level of excitement completely different from anything I've experienced before.
Watching election results that you actually had a say in is like watching a football game that you are both playing in and cheering for--except it actually has a tangible effect on your future. It's a spectacle that you both feel anxious about and responsible for.
The level of emotional investment in something like an election makes it extremely difficult to hold back opinion. Journalists are expected to maintain a certain level of objectivity, but anybody who voted be default has beliefs. Last night, I found myself glued to Twitter (as usual), and trying really hard to not tweet anything that could potentially get me in trouble with the Missourian, my employer.
Objectivity is a constant conflict for me. When I picture my ideal job, every publication I think of tends to be a place where objectivity is not the top priority: The Nation, Mother Jones and feminist magazines like Bust, Bitch and Ms., to name a few. This leaves me with a big conflict: Do I decide now that I want to work for progressive media and throw all objectivity out the window, or do I hold back and wait to see where I end up before I burn any bridges?
Sara Shipley Hiles once came to speak to our reporting class about her work for Mother Jones. I asked Sara what she thought a journalist's obligation to objectivity is since Mother Jones is fairly well-recognized as a liberal publication. She said something that really stuck with me: "The truth has no bias." When I was watching the election, I kept coming back to that when deciding whether to tweet or delete. Although I did tweet some things that were on the border of being biased, I think I did a good job of sticking to the facts. As I continue into journalism, I feel like the issue of perceived objectivity will continue to come up--and I think as long as you stick to the facts and tell the best story you can, the objectivity will follow.

When Fay reminds you about that pesky thesis presentation in a few weeks and you remember there was something else you were supposed to do during the holidays instead of marathoning Breaking Bad.  This feeling is otherwise known as THE MAD PANIC.

Fans have left the building. Players are off the ice. Zamboni just exited stage left. Guess who is still slugging away in the pressbox? #journoproblems (at West Central Events Centre)

I'm interviewing two people tomorrow for an obituary that will run in my school's magazine this Friday, and the revised article is due tomorrow at 10 p.m. Add that to a full day of school and my life is a slew of deadlines.
