“An Evening of Sound and Light in Tribute to La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela” - 31st October, 1997 @ Barbican Hall, London. "The purpose of this concert is not entertainment"... Mark Webber from Pulp put this benefit concert together extremely quickly. Tony Wilson (yes, “Mr Manchester" himself) did the introduction, and then there were some video with La Monte’s audio work and Marian’s visuals. The Gavin Bryars Ensemble performed 2 tracks, and then a personal favorite, Spring Heel Jack, provided two pre-recorded pieces, with film projections from Paul Catling. There was a slightly awkward and bizarre pre-recorded telephone message from Yoko Ono. Nick Cave performed live - solo piano songs accompanied by Warren Ellis on violin. More La Monte film projections, etc. Spiritualized performed songs from the album "Ladies And Gentleman We Are Floating In Space", Steve Martland did "Crossing The Border" Performed by the English Chamber Orchestra. Terry Riley sent pre-recorded piece, and finally Pulp performed live; 3 songs from the album "This Is Hardcore", Love Scenes (Debut; later renamed Seductive Barry), This Is Hardcore (Debut), Help The Aged. Programme notes by Mark Webber: ”When I first heard that Marian was ill and I had the idea of a fundraising concert, I had no idea that we would put together such a fantastic event. I gratefully acknowledge the amount of work that has gone into making this evening possible, and I hope that this event will raise awareness of the scope and brilliance of the work of La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela.
