Deftones + Far. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 1997. Incredible. Visceral. This was, I believe, Deftones first EVER UK show. It was three weeks before the release of their second album, Around the Fur, so they treated us to several new songs. Far were excellent - this was the first of three times I saw them. My friends and I were converted and followed Jonah Matranga's career with One Line Drawing and then solo (at 2000 Trees a few years ago). What I remember most vividly is what this Kerrang! article describes: Chino diving off speaker stacks seemingly endlessly, losing items of clothing each time. My family was shaped by the War in Vietnam. The '65 escalation put all on draft deferral down range. Out of deferrals, guys got married, kids, jobs. I, the manifestation of a deferral, was that precious concert ticket you buy long before the date and keep safe until it comes time. Then, it gets wedged in a picture frame, falls out and flies to the ground. Maybe it sits in a drawer for decades. That is me, up to the mirror part. This one guy, my dad, loved me and the world changed for him in a way he didn't expect. I drifted off to the wrong side. He walked alone to get me from whatever badass drug peddler. He fed, clothed and sheltered me in safety when I had nothing. He also expected greatness from me even if I was a villain. I got to walk across the stage at the Greek Theater in Berkeley and get a college diploma in front of him. I was no old ticket stub in a drawer. He risked everything for me, not some old trinket from a long gone concert. I'm very, very fortunate and might have shown it more during his life.

So I know I’ve mentioned my love for a company called @stubforge but I decided to write a detailed #loveletter in order to show as many people as possible why I am OBSESSED with ordering printed tickets from #stubforge 😍 Photo 1 is of 2 tickets I had made for 2 different @britneyspears concerts I attended - the top ticket was a show where I was on the guest list and didn’t get a #ticketstub. The bottom ticket was for a full #dressrehearsal I attended on the @sonypictures lot and no tickets were even made. Photo 2 is a side-by-side comparison of a real #concertticket next to a ticket made by Stubforge. I saw @lizphairofficial play two back-to-back shows in NYC back in 2008 and lost one of the stubs … now, all these years later, I have the matching pair of stubs. Photo 3 is of 2 upcoming shows I’m seeing later this year - @toriamos & @nineinchnails - both of these shows offer mobile-only tickets (which SUCK) so I ordered actual tickets from STUBFORGE 😎 If you collect ticket stubs, you NEED to know about stubforge.com They offer various color options and discounts the more tickets you order at a time. Nothing beats real concert tickets but I’m this age of mobile-only Stubforge is the next best thing. I love this company so much, I will be ordering REAL TICKETS from them for the rest of my life. One Minute Silence + Will Haven + Sugar Coma. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 2001. On this day 21 years ago, I got punched in the balls and One Minute Silence rocked my world again. I wrote a review (second picture): The bastards. They’re incapable of disappointing. After being only mildly impressed by Sugar Coma’s brand of metal, and missing most of Will Haven’s set because of the old “some-twat-in-the-pit’s-fist-in-my-groin” syndrome, I was half expecting to have a dull night. One Minute Silence spoilt that before they even came on stage, with their intro tape that built the anticipation spectacularly. Their furious opening of 1845, followed in quick succession by a snappy rendition of their classic pit catalyst South Central, marked the beginning of the rest of the night. The set from then was a fairly equal mix of songs from the band’s two albums and material which the band plan to start recording for their third album in January–material which is, by the way, fantastically promising. Brian “Yap” Barry (vocals) did a lot less ranting than he usually does–in my experience–with only one explanatory speech before the new Representing the Poor Man. This song, among the longest they play live, is not only an effective mix of calming guitar noise (the watery sound of which helped give it the working title The Shark Song) and intense build up to a rolling chorus, it is a clear cumulation of the band’s admirable political message. The lyrics, as they so often do, betray Yap’s self-imposed political consciousness, which the whole band share. Once again, One Minute Silence have given me the feeling that I’m part of the show. In this, they never fail.
