What are your hockey podcast recs? And I love last podcast on the left and behind the bastards and then like … the blonde files and lipstick on the rim lol
oohh i haven't heard of those last two before! i'll give them a try. thanks anon 🥰
hockey podcast recs:
32 thoughts
this is the most popular hockey podcast by far. hosted by elliotte friedman (NHL insider) and jeff marek (sportsnet radio host), this podcast releases episodes every monday & friday and includes a recap of the week's top storylines & news from around the league, insider information, and player interviews. many current players listen to this show as well.
they can have a slight focus on canadian teams, considering the podcast is produced by a canadian company, but they do talk about all teams.
vibes: informative. lots of news is broken/rumors start from this show. goofy gen x dads hosting a podcast about the NHL.
the chris johnston show
this is hosted by the SDPN (steve dangle podcast network). the show is hosted by julian mckenzie (writer for the athletic) and features chris johnston (NHL insider).
this show is similar to 32 thoughts in that it recaps the week's top storylines & headlines and updates biweekly.
vibes: informative. goofy millennials hosting a podcast about the NHL.
the hockey PDOcast
this is run by the same network as 32 thoughts (sportsnet). hosted by dimitri filipovic, this podcast takes an analytics-focused approach. they do break downs of players and teams from around the league. episodes are posted monday-friday.
might be hard to understand if you don't know much about analytics, but if you want to learn more about it, it's not a bad place to start. they won't explain in detail what everything they're talking about means, but you can always pause and do research if it interests you
vibes: let's talk about math but make it hockey!
the athletic hockey show
this pod is produced by the athletic (sports new department of the new york times). it's hosted by various staff writers at the athletic, and they release 1-2 episodes per day.
this show goes into the top news & storylines around the NHL, and also goes more in depth into certain topics like how a particular team is performing, how certain players are ranked, etc. the episodes are essentially podcast versions/breakdowns of the articles they post.
vibes: opinion-based analysis on the latest news and storylines around the NHL. different vibes depending on which writer(s) are hosting each episode.
the DFO rundown
hosted by frank seravalli and jason gregor of the nation network, the daily faceoff rundown is a daily podcast covering (you guessed it) the latest news and storylines around the NHL.
frank seravalli is probably the most controversial "insider" in the NHL world. he gets in trouble for spreading false information sometimes, but has also broken multiple stories before anyone else has. he's super tight with some player agents and will unashamedly be their mouthpiece, which also allows him to get some breaking news before other insiders do.
vibes: very opinionated reporting on the latest news & storylines around the NHL, including rumors that sometimes turn out to be true, and sometimes don't.
spittin chiclets
this is the preeminent, infamous dudebro NHL podcast. it is run by barstool sports and hosted by former players paul bissonnette and ryan whitney.
i'll be honest - this show can be very tough to listen to. very crass, quite misogynistic, etc. i mean it is run by barstool, enough said.
the reason i am including it on this list is that they have, by far, the best current & former player interviews. players feel comfortable with former players like biz and whit, and so the interviews with players on this podcast are far more interesting and in depth than with traditional media members. they really show their personality more than they normally would.
they release episodes once a week, and the episodes are obscenely long. i would recommend just listening to player interviews if you're interested in listening to them in more of their "natural habitat"
vibes: imagine this podcast being recorded in a frathouse. if that disgusts you, don't listen
locked on NHL: prospects podcast
the locked on NHL network has podcasts on general news and news for each team in the NHL. this particular show that i like to listen to is focused on prospects specifically. they analyze both undrafted and drafted prospects and go into what their game is like, the type of player they project to be in the NHL, do mock drafts, etc.
vibes: hockey-nerd analysis of young players who are not yet playing in the NHL / are in their first few seasons in the NHL
bonus youtube channel: the hockey guy
the hockey guy on youtube posts multiple videos a day. shannon is a legend plain and simple. he posts a video previewing each game happening that day, and reviewing each game after it happens. he also posts daily news videos and videos on other topics such as NHL expansion, deep dives into particular teams, etc. he makes things very easily digestible for all fans of the game.
vibes: your wholesome, nerdy neighbor talks about the NHL with the aid of his trusty whiteboards. he has many cats and bunnies who make guest appearances in his videos, alongside his lovely wife yvonne.

A new class-action lawsuit accuses OpenAI and partner Microsoft of infringing on works by non-fiction authors, the latest in a string of legal actions against artificial intelligence companies.
It comes amid turmoil at OpenAI, where most of the startup’s nearly 800 employees have threatened to quit if ousted CEO Sam Altman doesn’t return to his role. He was fired by OpenAI’s board on Friday and announced Sunday that he would join Microsoft, whose CEO Satya Nadella told CNBC on Monday he is looking to partner with Altman in whatever form that takes.
The lawsuit against the two companies, filed Tuesday in federal court in the Southern District of New York, makes similar arguments to other allegations that AI companies used copyrighted works in massive training sets employed to build tools like ChatGPT.
The lead plaintiff in the suit, Julian Sancton, is the author of , which he spent five years and tens of thousands of dollars writing, according to the lawsuit, which hasn’t previously been reported.
“The commercial success of the ChatGPT products for OpenAI and Microsoft comes at the expense of non-fiction authors who haven’t seen a penny from either defendant,” said Susman Godfrey partner Justin Nelson, the lead attorney representing Sancton.
OpenAI doesn’t disclose what data it used to train GPT-4, its most advanced large language model, but lawyers for Sancton say ChatGPT divulged the secret. “In the early days after its release, however, ChatGPT, in response to an inquiry, confirmed: “Yes, Julian Sancton’s book ‘Madhouse at the End of the Earth’ is included in my training data,” the lawsuit reads.
One way that lawsuit is different from others is that it ropes in Microsoft, which did not decide what training data to use in OpenAI’s models or even design the models itself. Rather, Microsoft provided the infrastructure for training and running them.
The models are now core to Microsoft’s business, which has given it a boost in stock price, the suit points out.
“Microsoft would have known that OpenAI’s training data was scraped indiscriminately from the internet and included a massive quantity of pirated and copyrighted material, including a trove of copyrighted nonfiction works,” the suit alleges.
The companies didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
Know More
Last week, Stability AI’s vice president of audio, Ed Newton-Rex, resigned in protest over the company’s stance on copyrighted work (It was ok with using them.)
Famous fiction authors like Jonathan Franzen and John Grisham sued OpenAI earlier this year for copyright infringement. Sarah Silverman and other authors are also suing Meta on the same grounds. Several other lawsuits are making their way through the courts.
AI companies have argued that using copyrighted works in training data constitutes “fair use” of the material. In essence, computers are “learning” from the copyrighted works, just like humans learn when they read.
Sancton’s attorneys argue it’s not the same thing. “While OpenAI’s anthropomorphizing of its models is up for debate, at a minimum, humans who learn from books buy them, or borrow them from libraries that buy them, providing at least some measure of compensation to authors and creators,” the lawsuit said.
It alleges that OpenAI deliberately conceals its training sets to hide the copyrighted works it uses. “Another reason to keep its training data and development of GPT-3, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4 secret: To keep rightsholders like Plaintiff and members of the Class in the dark about whether their works were being infringed and used to train OpenAI’s models,” the lawsuit argues.
Reed’s view
AI copyright law will surely make its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The fundamental question: If an AI model is not actually reproducing a protected work, then is the fact that it learned from it a technical violation of copyright?
If AI companies pay for copyrighted works — say, buying a book — can they legally use it to train an AI model, or do they need to license the material from the owner of the copyright?
There’s also a purely moral question: Even if it turns out the AI companies are right, and training AI models with copyrighted material constitutes fair use, should they?
This is a very thorny one. I am the author of a non-fiction book that is almost surely in the training sets for these models and I don’t really have a problem with it. I don’t think large language models will ever really pose competition for books. A book is a lot more than a bunch of words.
What I find upsetting is that there are places people can pirate the book online and read it for free. Nobody seems outraged by that, though.
I also think that we have all contributed to this technology in one way or another; it’s trained on basically the entire internet.
Even if AI companies compensated me for the use of the book, what would it be worth? A few cents? I do, however, think that if AI companies use my book in their training data, they should at least be required to buy a copy. Otherwise, that’s just plain old pirating.
The third point is how technology is moving beyond the copyright issue already. As we’ve reported, the newest small models in generative AI are trained using synthetic data created by the larger models.
And companies like OpenAI are hiring other companies like Scale AI to create content from scratch, specifically to train new AI models.
At some point, there may be a proliferation of generative AI models that contain no problematic material at all.
Room for Disagreement
Ed Newton-Rex argues in this article that what AI companies are doing is wrong: “Setting aside the fair use argument for a moment — since ‘fair use’ wasn’t designed with generative AI in mind — training generative AI models in this way is, to me, wrong. Companies worth billions of dollars are, without permission, training generative AI models on creators’ works, which are then being used to create new content that in many cases can compete with the original works. I don’t see how this can be acceptable in a society that has set up the economics of the creative arts such that creators rely on copyright.”
Notable
There really is no clear answer on where the law comes down on the issue of copyright material, reports James Vincent of The Verge.

Comment: An update on the issues in a context where the US and Australia are now officially in diplomatic conflict over this matter.
Prem Thakkur
14 August 2023
The United States is considering a plea deal that would allow WikiLeaks founder and whistleblower Julian Assange to return to Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.
U.S. Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy told the Morning Herald that there could be a “resolution” to Assange’s now-four-year detention in Britain. Assange, an Australian citizen, has been held in a London prison since 2019 while combating U.S. extradition efforts. He faces 18 criminal charges in the U.S., 17 of which allege violations of the Espionage Act.
Kennedy’s comments come weeks after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken rebuffed Australia’s calls to end the prosecution against Assange. After a July meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Brisbane, Blinken said the whistleblower was “charged with very serious criminal conduct” for his role in publishing classified American government materials. The files Assange shared in 2010 included footage of a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad that killed 18 civilians — including journalists — and hundreds of thousands of field reports from the Iraq War.
“There is a way to resolve it,” Kennedy said on Assange’s detention, adding that a plea deal would be “up to the Justice Department.” The Department of Justice declined to comment. The State Department did not respond to The Intercept’s request for comment.
“The administration appears to be searching for an off-ramp ahead of [the Australian prime minister’s] first state visit to DC in October,” Gabriel Shipton, Assange’s brother, told The Intercept. “If one isn’t found we could see a repeat of a very public rebuff delivered by Tony Blinken to the Australian Foreign Minister two weeks ago in Brisbane.”
Dan Rothwell, an international law expert at Australian National University, told the Morning Herald that he believes a likely outcome would involve American authorities downgrading the charges against Assange in exchange for a guilty plea, while taking into account the four years he has already spent in prison.
In May, Kennedy met with a cross-party delegation of parliamentary supporters of Assange. “The U.S. and Australia have a very important and close relationship, and it’s time to demonstrate that,” Independent MP Andrew Wilkie said at the time.
Assange’s case has raised major press freedom concerns around the globe.“The United States is applying extra-territorial reach by charging Assange, who is not a US citizen and did not commit alleged crimes in the US, under its Espionage Act,” a group of former Australian attorneys general wrote to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last week. “We believe that this sets a very dangerous precedent and has the potential to put at risk anyone, anywhere in the world, who publishes information that the US unilaterally deems to be classified for security reasons.”
As part of WikiLeaks’ release of documents, Assange coordinated with outlets like Spain’s El País, France’s Le Monde, the U.K.’s The Guardian, and the New York Times to release classified cables revealing the inner-workings of bargaining, diplomacy, and threat-making around the world.
Assange has faced legal pressure since his mass documents leak in 2010; he sought asylum in Ecuador in 2012 and lost it before being imprisoned in London. In June, the Morning Herald reported that the FBI was seeking new information about Assange, disturbing the sense of optimism in Australia that had come from Kennedy’s meeting with lawmakers.
The ambassador’s latest comments have renewed hope from Assange’s family for a solution to the 13-year-long limbo he has faced.
“This is a sign that they don’t want this playing out in American courts, particularly during an election cycle,” Shipton told Sky News on Monday, “so the U.S. administration is really looking for an off-ramp here for what is an extremely, extremely controversial press freedom prosecution.”

(via Election Denier Mark Finchem Sanctioned By Judge For ‘Groundless’ Midterm Challenge)
An Arizona judge ordered sanctions against Mark Finchem, an election denier who ran on the Republican ticket for Arizona’s secretary of state, for mounting a baseless challenge against the 2022 election results.
On Monday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Melissa Iyer Julian said that Finchem and his attorney filed their lawsuit “without substantial justification.” She is now ordering him to pay $292 in court costs to his Democratic opponent Adrian Fontes, as well as attorneys’ fees for Fontes and Governor Katie Hobbs, which she gave the Democrats 20 days to submit.
His challenge to the election was “groundless,” she wrote in the order, and “filed in bad faith.”
“Mr. Finchem and bad actors like him cannot be permitted to avoid accountability,” Fontes said in a statement released by his campaign. “His repeated lies, apparent campaign finance violations, and bad-faith legal efforts are a drain on Arizona taxpayers and a stain on our state’s image.”
ever-present, big-ass cowboy hats on these fools is a mockery of any real tradition.

Why didn't Trump release the JFK files implicating the CIA?
Why didn't Trump appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Epstein's death/escape?
Why didn't Trump disclose the 9/11 files implicating the CIA, MOSSAD, ISI, or Saudi intelligence?
Why didn't Trump free Julian Assange?
Why is Trump BFFs with the Rockefellers and Gates?
Though he campaigns as "anti-establishment," he is as entrenched in the establishment as any other politician. If he was truly the dissident everyone makes him out to be, he would already have been taken out like JFK.
They use Trump to control opposition. He accomplished nothing to alter the power structures of the "swamp" he vowed to drain. He plays the part well, so much of the population focuses on him rather than the constant manipulation occurring behind the scenes.
He was preoccupied with securing oil in Syria, pushing COVID vaccines, advocating for gun control, endorsing lockdowns, hiring Alexander Acosta and John Bolton, increasing the national debt more than Obama, bailing out corporations, prosecuting Hillary's whistleblowers, and continuing the endless wars.
He prioritized his own political ambitions over pardoning the J6 protesters. HIS OWN SUPPORTERS. They remain imprisoned when he could have pardoned them the very next day.
They're all part of the same club and you're not in it. He is not your savior; he's just as corrupt as any other politician.
Like nearly all politicians in history, Trump's primary concern is himself. Trump is not, never has been, and never will be the kind of man who sticks his neck out for anybody or anything.
All of the wars will continue no matter who is in office. He is spineless.
The rot at the heart of our government is not an accident; it's a symptom of a system that shackles us all. Politicians lie, cheat, and steal, all while preaching about freedom and justice. They promise to protect us but rob us blind, trample our rights, and stifle our dreams.
We don't need a nanny state telling us what to do, how to live, or whom to trust.
It's time to move the hell on and demand the liberty you deserve.

I asked about Julian Assange cuz you referenced him in that post you made about Waldman, saying that he was in contact w/Assange multiple times. I'm asking because the way you framed it came off as negative/critical so I wanted to clarify. Btw, Waldman was working w/the CIA in hopes to broker a deal w/Assange so he wouldn't release more info about the military, not cuz he was on Assange's side. I'm pro-Heard, & just wanted to say that Waldman never helped Assange & the deal failed.
waldman is a creepy piece of shit who was thrown off the depp defamation case for violating a gag order and releasing misleading and doctored shit to the press under the guise that they were actual evidence and documents in the case (x). waldman has ties to vladimir putin and filed documents with the DOJ indicating he'd be working with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska whose visa was revoked due to ties to organized crime & Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (x) his conduct is crazy unprofessional, and this THR piece which i was probably quoting in whatever i wrote about waldman mentions the assange connection (x). i haven't seen any reputable source confirm that he was working on behalf of the cia, but feel free to share any confirmation from anyone other than waldman himself, bc i don't believe really anything that he says.
the only thing i know about assange is that he was accused of sexual assault by two women (x)

The widow poet
Jamaal Scherer’s dream was to find his soul mate and become a poet. He did indeed find the love of his life in his last year of high school; she was this lively presence that would make everyone smile as soon as she entered a room. Her name was Juliane Finch.
Tumblr media
Jamaal and Juliane ran away to pursue their dreams, backpacks on and barely enough money to get more than a humble tent. Juliane wished to become the most knowledgeable of botanists and to meet the famous Hermit of Granite Falls. And Jamaal... well, if he already wanted to release his inner poet, meeting his soul mate made him want to capture the beauty of the world in the highest form he knew how - poetry.
Their first destination was, obviously, the majestic woods of Granite Falls, followed by a desolate stay in Evergreen Harbour (Jamaal was devastated by the decrepit state in which the city had been left, and Juliane fell into a spiralling depression overworking herself fighting for those who lived of dumpster diving). Jamaal never wasted an opportunity to write, and his small poetry collection soon grew enough to become a solid book. It wasn’t much, but it was enough for them to live comfortably.
Two years later, attracted by the prospect of good weather and better surroundings, they moved to Sulani where, in a moonless night where the stars shone bright and the Milky Way ripped the sky apart, Jamaal proposed. Their wedding was a small and simple one, yet it was the loveliest to behold. Their love was pure and true, their admiration and understanding that which one only believes possible in dreams or tales.
Jamaal’s poetry book, Your Smile In Between Pine Trees, became a best seller over night. His editor kept calling and pressuring him to organize tours and write a second volume. Yet, all Jamaal wished for was to see his wife’s smile in the morning and feel her asleep in his arms deep at night. He did agree to a tour that would begin in Willow Creek, their home town, and end in Granite Falls. But only after he returned from honeymoon.
With the enormous sum he’d received from his best seller, Jamaal surprised Juliane to a luxurious stay in Tartosa’s finest holiday house.
Tumblr media
It was all sunshine and rainbows until Tartosa was hit by a heat stroke. Shops closed most of the time and few were the sims courageous enough to be outside during day time. Against Jamaal’s warnings, Juliane convinced him to go for a swim on afternoon. Juliane would later pass away from the heat stroke. Regardless of how much Jamaal begged, the Grim was set on taking her soul.
“Her time has come, she is gone,” the Grim placed a comforting hand on Jamaal’s shoulder. “You must let her soul go, even if it pains you so. If you truly love her, you must set her free.”
Jamaal’s sorrow was unmeasurable. He cancelled his tour, cut ties with his editor and decided to isolate himself from the world. He swore to never again visit Tartosa or any other place where the sun shone bright, beginner his descent into worlds of darkness and of those who dwell within the shadows...
His quest for solace brought him to spend his last few simoleons to buy a house in Moonwood Mill. He planned to gather inspiration on the Cursed ones who inhabited the former industrial town to write a new series of poetry he would dedicate solely to Juliane.
Tumblr media
It’s here that we find our grieving poet, with three poetry volumes (Orphan Song, All the things I never got to tell you, To all broken hearts) published under a new pen name, often wearing Juliane’s favourite coat.

Extradition of “Australian Julian Paul Assange, The Founder of The WikiLeaks,” On Hold Until U.S. Gives More Assurances (Hello Australia! Where The F*** Are You?)
British Judges Asked the United States, Which Wants to Try the WikiLeaks Founder on Espionage Charges, For More Guarantees About His Treatment.
— By Megan Specia | March 26, 2024 | The New York Times

The High Court in London ruled on Tuesday that Julian Assange, the embattled WikiLeaks founder, cannot be immediately extradited to the United States, saying American authorities must offer assurances about his treatment first, including over his First Amendment rights and protection from the death penalty.
The decision had been highly anticipated as the moment the court would decide if Mr. Assange had exhausted his challenges within British courts. Instead, in a nuanced ruling, two judges determined that clarity on his fate would again be on hold.
The two High Court judges said that the court “will grant leave to appeal” on narrow grounds, “unless a satisfactory assurance is provided by the Government of the United States of America.”
The court has given the United States three weeks “to give satisfactory assurances” that Mr. Assange “is permitted to rely on the First Amendment to the United States Constitution (which protects free speech), that he is not prejudiced at trial (including sentence) by reason of his nationality, that he is afforded the same First Amendment protections as a United States citizen and that the death penalty is not imposed.”
If those assurances are not given by April 16, then Mr. Assange will be granted a full appeal hearing. If the United States does provide the requested assurances, there will be a further hearing on May 20 to decide if they “are satisfactory, and to make a final decision on leave to appeal.”
While the United States has already provided some assurances over the treatment of Mr. Assange if he was extradited, the High Court judges asked for additional guarantees.
The Case Against Julian Assange:
— Who is Julian Assange? Assange is the founder of WikiLeaks. He rose to international prominence in 2010, when the group released diplomatic and military files related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan leaked by Chelsea Manning, an Army intelligence analyst. In 2016, ahead of the U.S. presidential election, WikiLeaks published Democratic National Committee emails stolen by hackers tied to Russian intelligence agencies.
— When did Assange’s Legal Troubles Begin? In 2012, Assange fled to the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to escape extradition to Sweden, where he faced an inquiry into accusations of rape and sexual assault that were later dropped. He remained in the embassy for seven years, until he was ejected in 2019.
— What Happened Next? The United States unsealed an indictment against Assange and sought his extradition, with prosecutors accusing him of violating the Espionage Act for his role in the 2010 disclosures and of conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer network.
— Where is Assange Now? After he was expelled from the embassy, Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks in jail in London for breaching bail conditions related to the rape inquiry. He has remained at Belmarsh Prison, where he married his longtime partner in 2022, while his lawyers fought his U.S. extradition order.
— What’s the Status of the Extradition Case? Five years after Assange was first imprisoned in a high-security facility in Britain while fighting a United States extradition request, the Biden administration has given the clearest signal to date that it might drop its prosecution of him. His wife said that her hopes were tempered.
The United States has sought the extradition of Mr. Assange since 2019, and the British government approved an extradition order in 2022, but he has fought his removal through the courts while detained in a high-security prison in southeast London.
Mr. Assange, 52, is accused of violating the U.S. Espionage Act with WikiLeaks’ 2010 publication of tens of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents leaked by Chelsea Manning, an Army intelligence analyst.
Speaking outside the London court on Tuesday, Stella Assange, Mr. Assange’s wife, urged the U.S. government to drop the charges against her husband.
“The Biden administration should not offer assurances. They should drop this shameful case that should never have been brought,” she told reporters gathered outside the court. “Julian should never have been in prison for a single day. This is a shame on every democracy. Julian is a political prisoner.”
As Mr. Assange’s case has unfolded over the years, it has become highly charged politically, raising First Amendment issues and alarming advocates of media freedom. The United States, Britain, where his extradition case is being heard, and Australia — where Mr. Assange is a citizen — are all involved, and in recent months there have been calls for some political resolution to see the charges reduced or dismissed.
Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, said that Tuesday’s ruling “presents the U.S. government with another opportunity to do what it should have done long ago — drop the Espionage Act charges.”
“Prosecuting Assange for the publication of classified information would have profound implications for press freedom,” Mr. Jaffer said in a statement, “Because publishing classified information is what journalists and news organizations often need to do in order to expose wrongdoing by government.”
The U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment.
Here’s a Brief History of the Case Against Julian Assange.
Mr. Assange moved to Britain in late 2010 from Sweden. The Swedish police issued an international arrest warrant for him later that year over sexual assault accusations.
In June 2012, he was granted political asylum in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London — where he stayed for the next seven years.
Sweden dropped its case against Mr. Assange. He was thrown out of the embassy in 2019, and shortly after, the United States announced an indictment against him, charging him with 18 counts of violating the Espionage Act by participating in a criminal hacking conspiracy and by encouraging hackers to steal secret material.
He was promptly arrested, and has been seeking to halt his removal to the United States through British courts ever since.
In 2021, a British judge denied the extradition request for Mr. Assange, ruling that he was at risk of suicide if sent to an American prison. But the High Court later reversed that decision based on assurances from the Biden administration that he would not be held in the United States’ highest-security facility and that, if convicted, he could serve his sentence in Australia.
By 2022, Priti Patel, who as Britain’s home secretary was responsible for the country’s borders and security, had approved the extradition request — and Mr. Assange’s legal team fought that as well.
When a lower-court judge denied their request that he be allowed to appeal, they asked the High Court to overturn that move.
Mr. Assange’s lawyers say that he could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted, although lawyers for the United States government have said that he was more likely to be sentenced to four to six years.
And Here’s What Happened at the Most Recent Court Hearings.
During a two-day hearing in the High Court in February, Mr. Assange’s lawyer Edward Fitzgerald told the judges, Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson, that his client had been “exposing serious criminality” by publishing the leaked documents, and laid out nine grounds on which Mr. Assange hoped to appeal the extradition order.
In their ruling on Tuesday, the judges dismissed six of the nine grounds for appeal as unfounded.
But they said that Mr. Assange had a “real prospect of success” on three of the issues raised, including on the threat to his freedom of expression in the United States; that his trial might be prejudiced because as an Australian he might not be given the same rights as American citizens; and that there was nothing to prevent the death penalty from being imposed, which would violate British extradition policies.
The court decided that “unless satisfactory assurances are provided, the court will grant leave to appeal on those grounds.”
Mr. Assange did not appear in the courtroom, despite having been granted rare permission to do so for the first time since 2021. His lawyers told the court that he was not well enough to attend or even to attend via video link from prison.
At a news briefing in February, Ms. Assange had said that her husband’s legal team would “definitely and immediately file an application” with the European Court of Human Rights if blocked from further appeals in Britain, and that he would ask for an “injunction to stop the U.K. from extraditing him.”

UK court to decide whether Julian Assange can appeal US extradition
Assange created the website in 2006 as a “dead letter drop” for would-be leakers. WikiLeaks rose to prominence in April 2010 when it published a classified video showing a 2007 US helicopter attack that killed a dozen people in Baghdad. It also released more than 90,000 classified US military documents on the war in Afghanistan, and about 400,000 secret US files on the Iraq war. The two leaks…

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Tuesday his government stands firm against the United States over the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, an Australian citizen fighting extradition from Britain on U.S. espionage charges.
Albanese’s center-left Labor Party government has been arguing since winning the 2022 elections that the United States should end its pursuit of the 52-year-old, who has spent four years in a London prison fighting extradition.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken pushed back against the Australian position during a visit Saturday, saying Assange was accused of “very serious criminal conduct” in publishing a trove of classified U.S. documents more than a decade ago.
“I understand the concerns and views of Australians. I think it’s very important that our friends here understand our concerns about this matter,” Blinken told reporters.
On Tuesday, Albanese said, “This has gone on for too long. Enough is enough."
He told reporters that Blinken’s public comments echoed points made by President Joe Biden’s administration during private discussions with Australian government officials.
“We remain very firm in our view and our representations to the American government and we will continue to do so,” Albanese added.
Assange, whose freedom is widely seen as a test of Australia’s leverage with the Biden administration, was discussed in annual bilateral meetings Brisbane, Australia, last week between Blinken and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
Wong told reporters Saturday that Australia wanted the charges “brought to a conclusion.” Australia remains ambiguous about whether the U.S. should drop the prosecution or strike a plea deal.
Assange faces 17 charges of espionage and one charge of computer misuse over WikiLeaks’ publication of hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic and military documents in 2010. American prosecutors allege he helped U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning steal classified diplomatic cables and military files that WikiLeaks later published, putting lives at risk.
Australia argues there is a disconnect between the U.S. treatment of Assange and Manning. Then-U.S. President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s 35-year sentence to seven years, which allowed her release in 2017.
Assange has been in high-security Belmarsh Prison since he was arrested in 2019 for skipping bail during a separate legal battle. Before that, he spent seven years inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden to face allegations of rape and sexual assault. Sweden dropped the sex crimes investigations in 2019 because so much time had passed.
Last week, Assange's brother, Gabriel Shipton, called for Australia to increase pressure on the United States.
“Each day the U.S. administration ignores the Australian public on Julian’s freedom, it becomes clearer and clearer Australia’s true standing in the alliance,” Shipton said, referring to a bilateral security treaty signed in 1951.

Charcherry Weekly - Issue 190
Hello everyone, Mage of Light Nick Card here. Its certainly been one heck of a week. Let's get to it.
Dangit Romper
Early this week, a flash drive was recovered by seemingly arbitrary means (random appearification by a curious wandering pokemon in the hardware workshop). It had apparently been one recognized by Heir of Hope Hazel Careon. She managed to retrieve a number of files off of it, which had to be won back via dice game. Vriskers used her luck to win the dice game and Gwyn used their quick draw to distribute the contained information to trusted parties. It was revealed that Ultimate Defense Attorney Katyleen Kitten had been accepted to Hope's Peak University in the past and ended up being forced to participate in a seemingly endless cycle of death games, reset with the participants forced back to life in their previous states once a year since september 2016. Driven to find out more, investigative reporter Aeons Edgeworth made a request to the SCP Foundation for more information, and had been put on a mailing list. As it turned out, this year's death game cycle had just started, and Ultimate Prosecutor Lightyears Edgeworth of this present point in time (no relation to Aeons) had also gotten kidnapped with Past Katie there. Reportedly, there is an advanced voidco dungeon core in play here, with the ability to maintain the looped time circuit, as well as a few other effects. Unfortunately, there is also a forcefield that makes entry and exit impossible as one of the notable features, so broadcast video content is the only way to keep tabs on the incident as it happens annually. The footage we are receiving has been screened by the foundation to make sure there aren't any cognitohazards being sent out. Because of the sensitive nature of the events, present Katie has not been in a good state lately, but thankfully her friends are offering their support. Regardless, further investigation is expected to continue as more video files are sent over.
Welcome to Neo Alternia!
On monday, an object known as the patriorb was recovered from another universe and sent to a trusted individual. The anonymous figure proceeded to sleep for three days. A few days later, a council was formed and held a meeting in a specially designated train. This council was comprised of a number of private individuals, but also included Rogue of Heart Charles, Heir of Time President Thoren Emit, Julian Ezinca, Garfie Lazaga, Exieda Olvegi, and at least one version of Skye M. The council made plans on how to handle the imminent release of the rescued trolls of Scarab city from the patriorb. It was decided that a stage would be set up with sound equipment, and that replicators would be deployed to provide food and water. An anonymous healer was put on healing duty. This process of uncaptchaloguing (after auto-sorting) took a number of hours, with surprisingly minimal chaos until the timelocked cards began to be deployed. Page of Rage Jovin Castle was called upon to help the council defend the trolls from surprise attacks. Eventually however, the main council member, who had viciously proved herself as a terrifying opponent in battle, got up on stage to introduce herself. She identified as Her Enigmatic Resiliency, and tossed the dead corpse of the Her Imperious Condescension upon the stage to let it be known that the previous emperess was dead and gone, and would be replaced by HER. She proceeded to offer an encouraging speech about the rights that would be afforded to the trolls of Neo Alternia, in contrast to the lack of rights before. However, HER was gunned down on stage and died then and there. But this was not the end. Her Enigmatic Resiliency rose from the dead before her subjects, and shocked the audience as she continued her speech, calling the attack "rude". Peace was re-established quickly after that. At this point, reconstruction on Scarab city is continuing, ties to korous have been established, an industrial replicator has been installed, and the future is looking sufficiently unlit for the nocturnal horned grey children of Neo Alternia. Your dear newsletter writer managed to get an online interview with Her Enigmatic Resiliency. Here is the entire interview:
HER: Hello, I'm ready for the interview whenever you are. LS: I'm ready, just had to attend to some things for a moment LS: Alright, so, you're Her Enigmatic Resiliency, correct? HER: That is correct, yes. LS: Ah, its nice to meet you. HER: Likewise. LS: Anyhow, I have a few questions for you. LS: First question: it appears from the footage that Neo Alternia is still a work in progress. Do you have any idea how long it may take with current known resources to rebuild from what had been transferred over? HER: I cannot estimate that accurately. I'm hoping we get virtual infrastructure working in the next couple of nights and work from there. LS: Ah, that sounds like it'll go quick there. HER: I'm thankful for all the aid provided, and my subjects are handling things remarkably well, considering the distressing circumstances. LS: That's good. That also brings me to my next question: LS: What ties does Neo Alternia have to Korous, considering President Thoren's presence at the presentation? HER: Neo Alternia is currently within the Korosian solar system, and so is technically under their jurisdiction for now. HER: We have agreed to work together to ensure the safety and rights of Neo Alternia. LS: That's good to hear. From what I've gathered, the Emit Administration has done very well at getting Korosian society up and running again, with more agreeable policy than before The Reckoning. I trust you've got a strong ally there. HER: I believe their experience will be helpful with my plans for Neo Alternia, yes. LS: Next question: It's been reported that 99% of the troll population on Neo Alternia is relatively young, apparently due to prior enforcement of adult/child segregation practices. Will such practices be ended, and what will be done about conventional concerns regarding child labor in a place where most labor is qualified as such out of necessity? HER: The practice of forcing adult trolls off of Alternia has ended yes. No troll need fear their Ascension Day any more. HER: Child labour is a tricky subject. I wish to end it as soon as possible, yet there are not many adults to take up the role. HER: Child labour in dangerous industry is something I look to ending as soon as possible. I am open to hearing any suggestions. LS: That is encouraging to hear. I do hope that it's addressed relatively soon. LS: are there any particular statements you'd like to offer before we wrap this up? HER: I plan on making Neo Alternia the best place for any troll to live. I am open to hearing any suggestions or honest feedback. HER: However, do not mistake my desires and politeness for complacency. LS: understood. what would be the appropriate channels for the public to voice suggestions and feedback? HER: For those outside Neo Alternia, I have this user account. Staff of The Railway and the DTA can handle forwarding physical letters. HER: For those within Neo Alternia, my administration is currently based within the central railway station of the relocated Scarab City. LS: Good to know. It was a pleasure speaking with you. I wish you and your world the best of luck.

Julian Assange’s Grand Inquisitor
February 22, 2024
"The prosecution lawyers in the High Court seeking to ensure Julian’s extradition to the U.S. rely almost exclusively on the judicial opinions of Gordon Kromberg, a highly controversial U.S. attorney.
By the end of the day, it seemed likely that, probably by April, since requested written briefs have to be turned into the judges in March, the two judges will permit an appeal on at least a few of the points. This will, conveniently for the Biden administration — which I expect does not want to take on the contentious issue of extraditing Julian while fueling the genocide in Gaza — mean that any extradition would occur after the election.
The two-day hearing was Julian’s last chance to request an appeal of the extradition decision made in 2022 by the then British home secretary, Priti Patel and of many of the rulings of District Judge Vanessa Baraitser in 2021. If Julian is denied an appeal he can request the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) for a stay of execution under Rule 39, which is given in “exceptional circumstances” and “only where there is an imminent risk of irreparable harm.” But it is possible the British court could order Julian’s immediate extradition prior to a Rule 39 instruction or decide to ignore a request from the ECtHR to allow Julian to have his case heard by the court."
The CIA seeks Julian’s imprisonment in the U.S. because of the release of the documents known as Vault 7, which exposed hacking tools that permit the CIA to access our phones, computers and televisions, turning them — even when switched off — into monitoring and recording devices. The formal extradition request does not include charges based on the release of the Vault 7 files, but the U.S. request also only came after the release of the Vault 7 material. The CIA usually gets what it wants. But for the near future I expect Julian to continue to rot in HM Prison Belmarsh, where he has been imprisoned for nearly five years as he deteriorates physically and psychologically. This slow motion execution is intentional.
It is hard to call any court ruling, other than the dropping of the charges against him, a victory, but the longer he stays out of U.S. hands, the more hope he has of regaining his freedom for carrying out the most important investigative journalism of our generation."
