Antinous / Hermes de Pio-Clementino
Desmet Galerie
Antinous / Hermes de Pio-Clementino
Period:
17th century
Provenance :
Ital
Medium :
Wood
Dimensions :
l. 15.75 inch X H. 51.18 inch X P. 15.75 inch
Height: 130 cm
W x D: 40 x 40 cm
H 51 1/8 x W 15 3/4 x D 15 3/4inch
The statue shows a nude young man with a cloak ‘chlamys‘, thrown over his left shoulder and wrapped round the left forearm. He is standing at rest in a contrapposto pose gazing downwards.
The statue is made out of a soft wood and was originally covered in a layer of stucco, which would have been painted most likely in white to imitate marble. With the stucco surface gone, we can beautifully see how the statue was made. The body was carved out of one piece of wood and the head and arms were attached separately to make it easier for the sculptor to work.
The purpose was to make it look like a heavy marble classical statue. The white surface would cover any restorations, imperfections and from a distance it would have been impossible to see the difference. An added bonus was the weight of the soft wood; it could be placed on a lighter structure made of a different material than stone or marble.
Taken in consideration the material used and the technique of sculpting, it is not such a far stretch to imagine it on top of a balustrade in a Renaissance theatre. The best comparable is the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza (1580-1585). It was designed by Andrea Palladio and it is today one of the three Renaissance theatres remaining in existence. (the other two being the Teatro all’antica in Sabbioneta and the Teatro Farnese in Parma).
The ancient Roman statue is also known as the l'Admirable, Admirandus, L'Antin, Hercules, Meleager, Mercury, Milo and Theseus.
It was apparently recorded for the first time on 27 February I543 when a thousand ducats were paid to 'Nicolaus de Palis for a very beautiful marble statue ... which His Holiness has sent to be placed in the Belvedere garden'. By April I545 it was certainly in the statue court. Writing a few years later Aldrovandi said that it had been found 'in our time' on the Esquiline near S. Martino ai Monti, but Mercati in the 1580s said that it had come from a garden near Castel S. Angelo- where the Palis family seems to have owned property. It remained in the statue court until 1797 when it was ceded to the French under the terms of the Treaty of Tolentino. It reached Paris in the triumphal procession of July 1798 and was displayed in the
Musée Central de Arts when it was inaugurated on 9 November 1800. It was removed in October 1815, arrived back in Rome on 4 January 1816, and was returned to the Belvedere courtyard before the end of February.
The statue won immediate fame and it was already known as Antinous (a title frequently given to figures of male youths) in 1545 when Primaticcio, on his second visit to Rome from Fontainebleau, had a mould made from it for François Ier. Alternative theories that it might represent Milo or the Genius of a Prince were suggested not long afterwards but won little support. The Antinous was mentioned with enthusiasm in virtually all accounts of the most famous statues in Rome. It was reproduced in all the leading anthologies and was also much drawn by visiting artists. It was copied both in marble and in bronze and in rare occasions in wood, as we can see here. In the catalogue of the sculptures of the Musée in Paris it was described as 'one of the most perfect statues that has come
down to us from antiquity - an opinion that continued to be very widely held for most of the nineteenth century.
Moreover, the Antinous was as popular with artists of all persuasions as it was with collectors and connoisseurs. Bernini was as enthusiastic as Duquesnoy and Poussin who (possibly with the assistance of Charles Errard) made measured drawings of it which were reproduced in Bellori's Lives of the Modern Painters, Sculptors and Architects. Two more measured engravings were published by Audran in his prints, made for the use of artists, on the proportions of the ideal human body, and in his portrait of Charles Lebrun (now in the Louvre) which Largillière presented to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1686 a reduced version of the Antinous (and also one, in bronze, of the Borghese Gladiator) was prominently displayed in front of the president's easel. Nearly seventy years later in his Amalysis of Beauty Hogarth (who, of course, never saw the original) claimed that in regard to the utmost beauty of proportion' it is allowed to be the most perfect of any of the antique statues'.
Before he saw the marble itself Winckelmann agreed that 'our Nature will not easily create a body as perfect as that of the Antinous admirandus'. He expressed passionate admiration of the statue for its sweetness and innocence of expression which, following a critical commonplace, he contrasted with the godlike majesty of the Apollo nearby. It was Winckelmann, however, who challenged the theory that the statue portrayed Antinous, suggesting instead, with not much force and with no evidence, that it was a Meleager.
A number of alternative hypotheses were also made. Mengs proposed verbally that it was a beardless Hercules; for others it was a Theseus; while Visconti (who greatly admired the figure) produced a strong case, which won general acceptance in his own day and has retained it ever since, that the Antinous was in fact a representation of Mercury, as had been proposed much earlier by Stosch and rejected by Winckelmann. Visconti's most cogent argument depended on the existence of another version of the same figure wearing winged sandals and holding a caduceus. This version (since 1546 in the Farnese collection and acquired for the British Museum in 1864) had been noted without special enthusiasm by some writers and draughtsmen since the sixteenth century, but it seems not to have been related to the Belvedere Antinous before the Richardsons: they, however, accounted for the fact that it was "the very same Figure on the grounds (which they
deduced from numismatic evidence) that Antinous was sometimes identified with Mercury. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, it was the Farnese statue in the British Museum which attracted most scholarly attention, but this in turn was eclipsed by the replica found at a tomb in Andros (now in the National Museum in Athens). Some scholars consider that these statues are copies of a work by Praxiteles, but the Belvedere Antinous is catalogued in Helbig as a Hadrianic copy of a bronze original possibly by one of his pupils.
Provenance:
Our provenance goes back to when it stood in the historic Chateau de la Crois des Gardes, “the jewel of the French Riviera”. this legendary Belle Epoque property is an homage to the glory days of the French Riviera. Legend has it that Grace Kelly immediately fell under the spell of this unique castle, positioned a few minutes from the port of Cannes.

The First Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival Kicks Off With The Grand Tasting
Tumblr media
Tagaytay has always been a favorite local destination for those looking for a quick getaway from the city. It's not just a place for relaxation but a foodie haven as well with all the new restaurants that recently opened. That's why this is the perfect time to hold the first ever Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival which just held its grand launch last July 12, 2024 at Anya Resort Tagaytay.
Tumblr media
For two weekends from July 12 to July 21, 2024, the chefs and restaurants that have helped mold Tagaytay's storied dining culture will convene at Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival 2024 for a series of events designed to spotlight the finest aspects of the city's gastronomic offerings. This is the biggest food event that has ever happened in Tagaytay and The Hungry Kat was invited to witness the opening of this culinary extravaganza.
Tumblr media
The first event of the Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival 2024 happened last Friday with the Grand Tasting at Anya Resort. For P3,950 per person, guests embarked on a feast of flavors featuring Tagaytay's finest chefs and their signature dishes. I met up with my Ninang Bess Howe and foodie friend Nines Licad for an epic Tagaytay evening.
Tumblr media
At its heart, the Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival is an exploration of the city’s journey from a scenic highland retreat to a culinary hotspot. Its unique geography and cool climate have played a crucial role in shaping its vibrant dining scene. This transformation has spurred the growth of culinary tourism. Many local and international tourists now come specifically to explore Tagaytay as a dining destination. Taal remains to be its muse, and the food has become its compass.
Tumblr media
Each guest was given two stubs which they could use to get a glass of any of the premium wines on display at the venue. These included red wines, white wines, and sangria.
Tumblr media
The main function room of Anya Resorts was where all the chefs set up their stations for guests to sample. My first stop was at Happy Ongpauco-Tiu's Pamana and Tsokolateria table which are both places that I often visit when I go to Tagaytay.
Tumblr media
I got a selection of some of their popular items like the Hot Tsoko, Smoked Tinapa Pasta, and Molted Queso Bruschetta. This was just one of the more than 10 different stations that guests could try at the Grand Tasting
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Aniela Tolentino's Binulo Restaurant featured Papaitan, Dried Shrimp, and Tibuk-Tibuk together with Papa Bolo Microbrewery's Pina Niña pineapple ale. Anya Resort's own Chris Leaning had the Satay Skewer and Grilled Iberia Pork while Taal Vista's Chef Jayme Natividad brought his Beef Shank Ravioli with homemade ricotta and leeks.
Tumblr media
The rich heritage of View Park Hotel’s Siglo Restaurant also delighted guest's taste buds with their signature dishes. Dan Puga's Lula Cafe and Binggoy Remedios' Asador by Dos Mestizos were also present to showcase their offerings.
Tumblr media
Another restaurant I enjoy going to at Tagaytay is Ribchon and I got to meet its Chef Tristan Bayani.
Tumblr media
He served their famous ribs served in three delicious ways. First up was the Lechon Ribs with Tangled Rice, together with the Beer Barbecue Ribs and the Sinigang Ribs. These were probably the most popular items that evening.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Kalel Chan's Farmers Table and My Country House from the Raintree Restaurants served two very interesting dishes. The first was the Pineapple Ceviche with Coconut Ginger Emulsion and Basil Oil.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Chef Kalel also presented the Bull & Tendon Tartufata Cream Meat Pie with peeled tomato confit. Squeeze the cream into the meat pie first before biting away.
Tumblr media
Chef Robby Goco of Elaia by Cyma featured the Avocado Salad and Kakavia or Greek Fisherman's Stew. There was also their Lamb Pilaf with Domates Salata, pickles and yogurt in garlic sauce.
Tumblr media
I wasn't familiar yet with Reynaldo’s Smokehouse so I really wanted to try their barbecued centerpieces. The Smoked Pepper Rub Brisket and the Smoked Roast Beef were some of my favorites that night, especially with their tender and smokey meats.
Tumblr media
Chef Rhea SyCip of Flour Pot Bistro & Bakery is one of the main organizers of the Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival so her cakes and desserts were also very popular. I really love her Tres Leches cake while my husband always enjoys her Strawberry Doughnuts.
Tumblr media
I wasn't really able to try all the stations since there were just so many. Some others included View Park Hotel’s Siglo Restaurant, Dan Puga's Lula Cafe, and Binggoy Remedios' Asador by Dos Mestizos. The Slow Food Community Cavite was also there representing local farmers and showcasing their efforts to preserve and promote biodiversity, food heritage, and gastronomy.
Tumblr media
Senator Loren Legarda also had a part in the inaugural Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival 2024 as she helps promote culinary tourism. The Harvest Dinner was held on July 13, 2024 at The Fatted Calf where chefs Jayjay SyCip, Rhea SyCip, and Pilgrim Davao’s Jeramie Go collaborated on a menu that featured the best of ingredients, expertly prepared.
Tumblr media
On July 20, there will be an elegant six-hands dinner at Luxe at 180 by Chef Sau del Rosario for P4,500 per person. Cocktails start at 4:00pm with the breathtaking view of Tagaytay bathed in the warm glow of dusk. This Black Truffle, Caviar, and Wine dinner will be presented by world-class chefs including Australia’s Oliver Buenviaje, Emirate’s John Buenaventura, and our very own French-trained chef, Sau del Rosario.
Tumblr media
The back-to-back weekends will close with the Heritage Buffet on July 21, 2024 at the Veranda Restaurant of Taal Vista Hotel. For P2,200, this unique lunch buffet features the combined talents of chef Jayme Natividad of Taal Vista Hotel and chefs Jayjay and Rhea SyCip of The Fatted Calf. Together, they'll create a delightful fusion of heritage dishes, showcasing the best of Filipino cuisine.
Tumblr media
Capping off the festival is the inaugural Creative Bulalo Challenge. In collaboration with the Tagaytay City Tourism Council, restaurants from Tagaytay City will compete in this exciting culinary showdown, where participants will present their most innovative interpretation of the city’s beloved Bulalo. This competition will culminate in September 2024 at the iconic Tagaytay Picnic Grove.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Congratulations to the organizers and participants of the first Tagaytay Food and Wine Festival. This is just the beginning of this annual foodie event that will surely make Tagaytay an even more exciting culinary destination.

Philippines to let "Barbie" movie into theaters, but wants lines blurred on a "child-like" map
Tumblr media
Manila — Philippine censors said Wednesday they have allowed the "Barbie" movie to be shown in cinemas, after asking its Hollywood distributor to blur lines on a brightly-colored world map drawing allegedly showing China's claims to the disputed South China Sea. The fantasy comedy film about the famous doll, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is set to open in the Southeast Asian nation on July 19. After reviewing the film twice and consulting foreign affairs officials and legal experts, the government's Movie and Television Review and Classification Board said it would allow it to be screened.
The South China Sea and the nine-dash line
The censors began examining "Barbie" last week after Vietnam reportedly banned the film over scenes featuring a map showing the so-called nine-dash line, which China uses to justify its maritime claims. Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, despite rival claims from other Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. In April, China accused the U.S. of "endangering regional peace" by signing a new deal with the Philippines that will see four additional bases in the country used by U.S. troops, including one near the disputed South China Sea and another not far from Taiwan.Long-time treaty allies Manila and Washington agreed in February to expand cooperation in "strategic areas" of the Philippines as they seek to counter Beijing's growing assertiveness over self-governed Taiwan and China's construction of bases in the South China Sea.
A concession for Barbie's "cartoonish map"
After "meticulous" scrutiny of the film, Philippine censors were convinced that the "cartoonish map" did not depict the nine-dash line."Instead, the map portrayed the route of the make-believe journey of Barbie from Barbie Land to the 'real world,' as an integral part of the story," the censorship board said in a statement. Actor Margot Robbie is photographed during a photocall for the upcoming Warner Bros film "Barbie" in Los Angeles, June 25, 2023. MIKE BLAKE/REUTERS "Rest assured that the Board has exhausted all possible resources in arriving at this decision as we have not hesitated in the past to sanction filmmakers/ producers/ distributors for exhibiting the fictitious 'nine-dash line' in their materials." In a separate letter to Philippine Senator Francis Tolentino, who had criticized the film for "violating Filipino fisherfolks' rights," the censors said they had asked Hollywood studio Warner Bros to "blur" the controversial lines on the map. Dashed lines drawn in a "child-like manner" appeared in several locations on the map around land masses identified as Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia, the censors said. But it found only eight dashes around the landmass labelled "Asia." "Moreover, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia are not visible on the map," the board said in the letter dated July 11 and shared with reporters. "This is in stark contrast to the maps found in the banned films 'Abominable (2019)' and 'Uncharted (2022)'," it said. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it appreciated the opportunity to watch "Barbie" to "ascertain if the depiction of the imaginary world map is inimical to the national interest." Warner Bros did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment, but a Warner Bros spokesperson was quoted by Variety as saying the map was a "child-like crayon drawing" and "not intended to make any type of statement." The Philippines' approval of "Barbie" coincided with the seventh anniversary of an international ruling that China's historical claims to the South China Sea have no legal basis.
