Also. Loretta calls things the wrong names often. Or just made up names. Like Urban Air (the trampoline park) is the jumpoline park. And granola bars are gorilla bars. So when I use the correct words, it sounds weird to me. And now I just don’t know what’s real anymore.

Summer Class: Course G
Day 3: Ocean Odyssey
Class: Preschool and Kinder
Date: Aug. 28th, 2024
Today, we discussed why oil spills are harmful to marine animals. The children quickly understood how an oil spill could contaminate the water and poison the animals. For better comprehension, we experimented and tried our best to save the animals and remove the oil from the water. All of the children were engaged and did their best to help. We decorated our ocean candles for today's craft and finished our door plates by adding more seashells.
In the afternoon, the children played with balls and went on the slide and jumpoline. We also played some games before we said our goodbyes to each other.
Thank you so much for joining the Summer School. See you next time!

¡Que Viva, Jumpolin!
Tumblr media
We are saddened to hear that Jumpolin is closing its location on East Cesar Chavez, but inspired by their clear call to continue resisting gentrification and support for our movement fighting the capitalist destruction and displacement of working class neighborhoods.
As the Lejarazu family, Jumpolin’s owners, say, “..we are not defeated, because we have seen the work our community has put into combating and slowing down this mass displacement and support it to the fullest. Although we are closing our doors, we hope to see more resistance from our community and wish to continue to serve them in any ways we can.”
While Jumpolin is closing its doors, we will continue to support them, and ask that the community do so as well. They'll still be offering party rental services through their facebook and instagram pages, and they are amazing artists as well who can make beautiful piñatas and crafts for any occasion. We thank the Lejarazu family for everything they have done and will continue to do to serve the community.
The fight for Jumpolin in the aftermath of the demolition sparked the flame of the anti-gentrification movement as we  now know it in Austin, and born from this struggle was our very organization, Defend Our Hoodz. We grew through the struggle to enforce the boycott against F&F, the landlords who tore down Jumpolin, which remains in place as long as they are the owners of the land where the demolition occurred. We have gone toe to toe with the fascist supporters of the Blue Cat Cafe, and now we maintain the fight against the Domain on Riverside, expanding our struggle as gentrification encroaches on more of our homes and neighborhoods.
The rapid gentrification occurring across the working class, historically Chicano, immigrant, and black neighborhood of East Austin has run generations of families out of their homes and businesses. Gentrification is not just the isolated tactic of greedy landlords or real estate developers, it is pushed and encouraged by a city and politicians who align with capitalist exploitation. Gentrification is the product of capitalism and imperialism, a system which seeks to rob the working class of everything we create and leave us living on the bare minimum.
As capitalist exploitation is international, so is gentrification. Across the world, the working class, including the smaller businesses that serve them, are set upon by bigger and bigger capitalists who want to reshape our neighborhoods to their benefit. This is why we extend our solidarity to anti-gentrification movements across the US and the world, from Los Angeles to New York, from Mexico City to Berlin, and beyond.
Internationally, slumlords make us live in terrible conditions, capitalists pay us crumbs for our hard work, and politicians peddle lies and war, imposing their power on us with the force of an imperialist state that exists to oppress the working class here and worldwide. The fight against gentrification can't be won by begging politicians or developers, it can't be won by the non-profits tethered to the very imperialists oppressing us, and it sure as hell can’t be won by working with the very police who terrorize our neighborhoods daily. This fight can, and will, be won by  the working class organizing and resisting our displacement and exploitation, and conquering power for ourselves.
The capitalists can close down the places dear to us and try to keep us all struggling to make it, but we will continue to organize, to unite the working class and its allies, and to learn how to combat and resist. The people are ready to take a swing at those who want to tear us down. When we go on the attack, we will inevitably smash this old society apart!
¡Que Viva, Jumpolin!

Rise of a Playwright
Any good kingdom needed a skilled bard to tell tales of heroic deeds and magnificent struggles. The Kingdom of Spora was no exception. Would Troubadour Quintus have what it took to become a bard whose tales and songs would be remembered throughout history?
Approach: Hard Work
To get to the essence of meaningful creativity, one must pay their dues. Exploring the dark depths and high peaks of the soul is a sure path to creative inspiration. It won’t be easy, but the personal and professional rewards will pay off in the long run.
Primary Hero: Troubadour Quintus
THREE AM. THE OCEAN.
Tumblr media
If this doesn’t inspire a fellow, then what will.
The poem is written. It is called ‘Ash On Our Crowns’. It is ready to be performed before Art Critic Gaspar. There is nothing to fear -- the ocean has held the pen with us. This poem is perfect.
Tumblr media
The poem was not perfect.
Ocean, you’ve let us down. Let’s try an inspirational forest stroll.
Tumblr media
Mauled by a bear. Can we even hold a lute now?
Tumblr media
But... feeling more alive than ever before! WE ARE AN ARTISTE.
WE MUST DRINK TOO MUCH AND EAT TOO MUCH AND KISS PEOPLE WE SHOULDN’T KISS.
The first two turned out to be a lot easier than the third. But we GOT IT DONE.
Tumblr media
Does it count if it’s through a face mask?
Surgeon Stacia is literally praying that these two idiots will just get a room.
UNFORTUNATELY:
Tumblr media
There’s only one room at the clinic. And it’s hers.
That’s all the highs of life in Spora: now for the lows. We must starve. We must FIGHT.
Tumblr media
“SEAMSTRESS ALBREDA. THERE ISN’T ROOM FOR BOTH OF US IN THIS TOWN!”
“YOU KNOW WHAT -- JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE ONE DOESN’T MEAN YOU’VE GOTTA ACT LIKE ONE -- IF I WERE YOU I’D SUE MY PARENTS --”
Tumblr media
“-- THEY WERE CALLED JUMPOLINES UNTIL YOUR FATHER JUMPED ON ONE -- AND I’M GLAD WE HAD THIS TALK BECAUSE YOU’VE REMINDED ME TO TAKE THE TRASH OUT. GOODNIGHT.”
I think we may have deserved that.
Honestly, we probably deserve this, too.
Tumblr media
We’ve experienced all there is to experience. We’ve loved, we’ve fought, we’ve drunk and been merry -- we’ve starved in the stocks. Now’s the time to do it.
To write the poem of a generation. The poem of a kingdom. The poem that is True.
Tumblr media
It is called “Capricorn” and it is time... to Perform.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Art Critic Gaspar... you know not what you do.
Time to sail.
Tumblr media
And then return immediately when the ship is grounded for Troubador related reasons.
Tumblr media
“Eat the bread, Troubadour Quintus.”
“It’s... super moldy. It’s more of a chemical than a food at this point.”
“Eat the moldy bread, Troubadour Quintus.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whoa... the ghostly apparition of our father... here in broad daylight... leading us toward the cemetery.
Tumblr media
“Where are your shoes, papa?”
“Gooooooooo to the wooooooooods.”
“But I already tried that -- I got mauled by a bear, see, look at my arm --”
“The wooooooooooooooods.”
Tumblr media
We go the woods. The bear is there. The bear says, in the voice of our father:
“Yooooou goooooot thiiiiiiiis.”
She is right. We got this. It is time to write a play.
Our BFF Barmaid Rosalyn thinks we’re taking this Art Critic way too seriously, but she agrees to perform with us.
Tumblr media
She is a good egg.
The play is called “Glass Face”. It is time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Wow,” Troubadour Quintus said to himself as the critic staggered away from Spora, “I guess the play was a hit!”

Summer Course D
Theme: Desert Discoveries
Class: Preschool and K3
2024, August 7th
Today we went over what we had learned about deserts. We watched a short video demonstrating how animals and people can survive in this rough environment. Using the pictures of different desert animals from our storybook: “over on the desert” we practiced counting.
They exercised a lot while jumping on the jumpoline. They appeared very excited and having lots of fun!
In the afternoon, they had two different sorts of craft. The first one involved using glitter glue and pompoms to decorate their cactus pot. The second one was a gecko cutout. They tore art tissue and sticked with glue to their cutout to make a colorful gecko.
See you tomorrow!

Defend Our Hoodz is joining United Neighborhood Defense Movement!
Tumblr media
After five years of organizing fiercely against displacement and gentrification in Austin, as of July 1, our organization is evolving in its fight to build an even stronger and bigger movement in the struggle to defend the homes and neighborhoods of the working class.
We are proud to announce, that as of today, June 30, 2020, we are joining the United Neighborhood Defense Movement (UNDM), a new national housing struggle organization committed to fighting for the interests of the working class in all manifestations of the housing struggle. We will organize the people to improve our living conditions and defend against displacement in the form of evictions, mass displacement, and the process of gentrification.
UNDM is not a coalition, but a single organization. That means that Defend Our Hoodz - Defiende El Barrio will no longer be an active organization - it will become the Austin chapter of UNDM, alongside work in other cities across the US.
While we are immensely proud of the work and organization we have built as Defend Our Hoodz, we are looking forward to becoming UNDM alongside other tenants and organizers from across the country, and to see this movement grow even bigger.
All of our existing work and campaigns will continue uninterrupted - from our ongoing fight to defend Riverside from luxury development, to combating slumlords in East Austin, to being on guard for the next gentrifier insult to our community - but it will all be part of a national organization that will only strengthen our ability to fight back against landlords, developers, and politicians in our city and across the US. UNDM represents an even stronger version of the work we have been involved in.
The housing struggle can not be limited to just one neighborhood, or one city, or even one state - it must be united across all of these in order to take on the forces that keep us living in slum conditions and threaten us with evictions and displacement on a daily basis.
Defend Our Hoodz grew primarily out of the fight against gentrification in Austin, especially after the demolition of Jumpolin. While it was one of our focuses, we always knew that we had to look beyond just one demolished piñata store, or one street, but understand that the bigger system of capitalism is at the heart of the housing struggle.
Our analysis and understandings have only gotten stronger, and we encourage you to read our about page on UNDM’s website that lays out the politics that will guide our work. It will help anyone who is interested in becoming a part of UNDM or starting their own chapter in a city understand what guides us.
UNDM is hitting the ground running with a few chapters across the US, including Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, and San Marcos. We know we will grow further from these, and part of that will be through a national conference later this year to come to greater national unity, and struggle further over our politics and Democratically elect leadership. If your organization wants to attend or get involved, email us at [email protected]
We will never forget Defend Our Hoodz - and of course, Austin will never forget us! We know that we have helped lead the fight to defend our neighborhoods in ways that have shaken this city and made ruling class landlords, developers and politicians tremble. Those enemies are still right to be nervous - because this transformation does not mean the end of the work that has threatened them - but actually signals a shift into an even greater threat to their hold over our communities - a United Neighborhood Defense Movement ready to take them on!
Long Live, Defend Our Hoodz, Onto New Struggles!
Tenants and working class communities across the country,
join the United Neighborhood Defense Movement
to defend our homes, neighbors, and neighborhoods!
You can learn more about UNDM via our website - www.undm.org, our facebook page(https://www.facebook.com/United-Neighborhood-Defense-Movement-111244063971737/), our twitter @unitedhoodmvmt and instagram @unitedneighborhooddefensemvmt
