Congrats, KIRA, you have been accepted to AL for the role of POPPY POMFREY (FC: Sandra Oh). Eeep, I’m so excited to see you join us with Poppy! She’s such an intriguing character and I love seeing the way that grief has hardened her into the strict matron we all know her to be from the books. I’m so excited to see her develop and work through that grief! Please send in your blog (no sideblogs for first characters, please) in the next 24 hours and be sure to take a look at our new player checklist. Welcome home (once again), we’re so excited to have you join the family!

IC In Depth
personality traits —
+Intuitive: Extremely emotionally intelligent, Poppy is a pretty good judge of people’s character. She’s empathetic, and can usually tell when someone is lying.
+Determined: When Poppy has decided something, it’s extraordinarily difficult to sway her from her choice. She takes this particularly hard when she’s decided on a course of treatment or action for a patient and they deteriorate despite her intervention.
-Stubborn: Poppy knows that she’s among the best Healers of this age, and knows her knowledge is largely wasted at Hogwarts. If someone disagrees with her treatment plans, she’ll shove information and knowledge down their throat until they back off. She knuckles down when she knows something is correct or right, and rarely bows out of a fight. When Minerva and Poppy were sorted into separate houses, she notoriously marched to the Headmasters office and demanded a “re-draw”, insisting that the hat must be wrong.
-Short-tempered: While at work, Poppy tends to shut this part of herself off, her passion pushed into her work, but in her personal life, it doesn’t take much to get Poppy angry. And boy, when she’s angry, Poppy has a lethal and sharp tongue that could make grown men cry.
character biography —
Too queer for the Muggle life she left behind, and too Muggle for the wizarding society she found, Poppy threw herself into books and learning from a young age. Even with Muggleborn prejudices, Hogwarts became a safe haven for Poppy—the only place in the world she has been able to be herself. Among most of the students, Poppy was known as a kind, gifted witch, a good listener. Among her close friends Alastor and Minerva, Poppy told sarcastic jokes, ranted about wizarding society and the idiocy of the wix surrounding her.
After leaving Hogwarts, Poppy went to St Mungo’s to train as a Healer. She completed her training at an accelerated rate, and was given an interim position in Artefact Accidents- though it soon became clear that Poppy’s mind was under-utilised in this position. She was moved to the Janus Thickey ward six months later, where she thrived. Poppy spent years developing new approaches to managing the needs of long-term patients, and established new protocol for pain management for victims of an improperly applied Cruciatus Curse.
It was on this ward that Poppy met her first and only love, Antonia Callaghan. Poppy was giddy in love. She loved new things, like flowers, hand-holding and dinner dates. Antonia helped her to see life outside of work, and opened her up to joy. She saw a life outside of work for the first time, saw deeper meaning in healing people and giving them comfort, rather than just climbing the ranks of an aspirational career. When Minerva asked her to work at Hogwarts with her, and Poppy in such a good mood, it was easy to make the transition. One night, when Minerva and Poppy were having dinner, Poppy was talking about how brilliant it was to be in a relationship when she casually suggested that Minerva and Alastor would be pretty perfect for each other. Double dates followed, and then Minerva and Alastor’s wedding, and all was well.
When the war began, Poppy made the astute decision to stay at Hogwarts. With Minerva and Dumbledore juggling the Order of the Phoenix and their duties at the school, Poppy wanted to be a stable figure for the students. She wanted parents to know that there was someone available to nurture, protect and care for their children. But Antonia didn’t agree. A fiery spirit, Antonia fought against Death Eaters with the Order at every opportunity. Poppy was in her study late at night when Minerva arrived to tell her in person that Antonia had been killed.
Consumed with grief, Minerva and Alastor unreachable because of their work with the Order, Poppy threw herself into her work again. When she wasn’t in the Hospital Wing, Poppy was researching, spending hours writing papers, organizing a curriculum. Grief hardened Poppy, she has less tolerance for children breaking rules or getting themselves into silly arguments. She hears the way Minerva and Alastor talk about what’s coming, as if the war isn’t truly over. Poppy isn’t prepared for that. She can’t lose any more of the people she loves.
plot ideas —
I would LOVE for Poppy to eventually work with the Order when their next round of fighting starts up again. Someone to convince Poppy that she can’t remain neutral any longer- especially as she’s working through her grief and general dislike of so much fighting.
Poppy also sort of resents being at Hogwarts now that she’s grieving. I imagine she’s the sort to bottle her frustration up, so I bet that would be a damn good fight with Minerva at one point.
Would also love for Poppy to try to mentor or counsel a student who’s interested in a healing career.
headcanons ––
A career in medicine was always a given for Poppy. Her whole family are doctors, including both her mother (a hematologist), her father (a radiologist), and her two brothers (a pediatrician and a surgeon, respectively).
