#JustPeacePH Peace Tour 2017 Events Across the U.S.
The JustPeacePH Peace Tour 2017 is an educational speaking tour that aims to promote grassroots movements for peace with justice and to gain support for the peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.
Featuring four speakers:
Dulphing Ogan, Secretary General of Kalumaran (Kusog sa Katawhang Lumad sa Mindanao);
Edre Olalia, Legal Consultant of the Peace Negotiating Panel of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) in the peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the NDFP and President of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers;
Tinay Palabay, Secretary General of KARAPATAN Alliance for the Advancement of People’s Rights;
Josephine Pagalan of Kasalo Caraga.
Experts in the historic social, economic and political issues which have given rise to the civil war in the Philippines, the NDFP consultants will speak to US audiences about the history, content, and significance of the peace negotiations and the Filipino people’s struggle for a just peace. One highlight of their presentations is that they will speak specifically about the content of the CASER, which is the agenda item currently being negotiated and which gets at the meat of the issues which must be resolved by the NDFP and GRP.
JustPeacePH is an international platform which supports the Philippine peace process. It has special emphasis in reaching out to individuals, organizations and institutions which have advocacies on peace and issue-based people’s concerns in various capacities outside of the country. In particular, JustPeacePH aims to seek support from individuals and organizations in multilateral organisations, people’s organisations, civil society organisations, academe, development institutions as well as governments. The overall objective of JustPeacePH is: To create an international network or platform to support peace negotiations between NDF and GPH and support the people’s aspirations for just and lasting peace.

Last night was supposed to be a nonviolent rally, but the police kept antagonizing the protestors and eventually arrested and injured four people from our group. Everyone was released after midnight and we are all relieved. But for real though, The U.S. dropping bombs in Syria because they have "chemical weapons of mass destruction" will eventually lead to a war based on lies and loss of innocent lives. I was only 11 years old when Bush declared War on Terror in Iraq. 14 years later and another major war is brewing - déjà vu much? Now I'm a grown ass adult and I care and will stand in solidarity for the black and brown folks, working class, indigenous, and oppressed groups. Stay safe y'all. // #HandsOffSyria #TakeBackOurEducation #TBOE #JustPeacePH #ServeThePeople // @anakbayanny @anakbayannj @gabrielanewyork @nycsjp

This week’s biggest news: the Pulitzer Prizes! Even bigger? Black Pulitzer Prize winners:
Screenshot of a tweet from my favorite person/poet/writer ever, Saeed Jones AKA @theferocity.
I was elated to find out that Colson Whitehead won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with The Underground Railroad (Amazon | Indiebound), which I read and reviewed on this blog last year (Read: A Lifetime of Remembering with Colson Whitehead).
I have yet to read Tyehimba Jess’s book of poetry Olio (Amazon | Indiebound), but I am planning to while getting into this month’s poetry books. We’re about midway through April, National Poetry Month, so are you getting your daily dose of poems? Check out my lifelong affair with poetry, and do check out what I’m reading.

If you’ve been weary from the news these days, from Trump’s brand of all-the-things-your-worst-dreams-are-made-of, here’s a little reprise: hope. I’ve been using Deepak and Oprah Winfrey’s latest meditation series (cost: free) called Hope in Uncertain Times and it’s been giving me the kind of peace and calm I need. I’ve been a fan of these series since 2013, and trust me — this stuff is gold.

After doing the necessary inner work, there’s a ton of things happening around us we can always be plugged into. Unless you’re a Buddhist, of course, but for folks like me (brown, queer immigrant activists in the belly of the beast) there’s this: Peace Tour 2017.
In this week’s book review (War and Turpentine by Steffan Hertmans), I wrote about reading the story of the author’s grandfather, who was a soldier and a painter. I intentionally omitted the war years, because 1) honestly not a fan of war novels and 2) here we are in another war again, dropping missiles on other nations (Syria).
What I don’t see in the realm of international geopolitics are attempts to address the root causes of conflicts, which is why the Peace Tour 2017 gives me infinite hope. As a Filipino, I’ve long wondered about the longstanding civil war between the government and the “other government,” led by the Communist Party of the Philippines. If you’re interested in finding out more, look up to see if the tour will be making a stop in your city!

If you follow me on Instagram (and I think you should), you’ll know that I like to eat my feelings. Here are a few things that have brought me joy in the past few days:
Damn good homemade pasta at Affina.
  Live music in someone’s living room in San Francisco (yes, like the good ‘ol days). Lattes in the rain, specially turmeric lattes like the one pictured below from As Quoted in San Francisco.

Have you ever fallen in love with a magazine? Because I have, four times a year for three years now. Kinfolk magazine is one of a kind. It’s a lifestyle magazine filled with thoughtful pieces on philosophy, culture, art, design, fashion and cooking.
Imagine my joy at As Quoted cafe with Kinfolk as pictured above, as I read and learned about Shoshin, a Buddhist concept of “a beginner’s mind which refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions.” Total hyggeligt.

Please say hi.
Until the next post, your friendly Libromance creator + curator, Pia

Magkano bayad sayo?
############
How much did they pay you?
Nothing can value the solidarity i give to each civilian being caught in between during the time of war. To each child scarred by violence. To each mother that lost her home, husband and children in time of fleeing. To each family that need to left everything behind in exchange of safety.
I #StandwithMarawi. #neveragain and i say #noToMartialLaw. #JUSTPEACE #JUSTPEACEPH

'There has been a general assault in the last 25 years on solidarity, democracy, social welfare, anything that interferes with private power, and there are many targets. One of the targets is undoubtedly the educational system... If you want to "regiment the minds of men just as an army regiments their bodies," you’ve got to undermine these subversive notions of mutual support, solidarity, sympathy, caring for other people, and so on and so forth. The attack on public education is one example... And you know what that means. All of these are part of the general effort, I think, to create a socio-economic order which is under the control of private concentrated power. It shows up all over the place.' Adapted from Chomsky, Noam. 'Assaulting Solidarity - Privatizing Education, May 2000. Day 1: Talking about the third round of peace talks (scheduled for January 18-25 in Rome) with NDFP Peace Consultants.
“It’s not the form or type of government. It’s the content. Does it address the basic demands of the masses of people?” - Ruben Saluta, NDFP Peace Consultant.

One of the most surreal moments of my life was spending my first full day in the Philippines in the NDFP office talking to NDFP Peace Consultants weeks before the 3rd Round of Peace Talks that are happening right now in Rome. Ruben Saluta, Loida Magpatoc, and Renante Gamara, spent an entire day with us breaking down the economic and social reforms being proposed in Comprehensive Agreements on Social and Economic Reforms (CASER), peace negotiations, and what a vision for what just peace can look like.
