Season previews: North Melbourne (17th)
Last season: 17th (3 wins, 20 losses, 71.5%) Notable ins: Colby McKercher (no. 2 draft pick), Zane Duursma (no. 4 draft pick), Zac Fisher (Carlton) Notable outs: Ben McKay (Essendon), Todd Goldstein (Essendon), Jack Ziebell (retired)
Similarly to fellow cellar dweller, West Coast, predictions of an improved North Melbourne are not matched by an expectation of a rise up the ladder. For a club that has failed to win more than four games in any of the past four seasons, there is a feeling that North Melbourne's attempted return to relevance is only now beginning after a series of false starts. It was reported in 2019 that when then coach Brad Scott suggested to the board the playing list was mediocre and in need of a rebuild, he was told they had already started rebuilding three years earlier and could not afford to do so again (referring to the year they moved on Nick Dal Santo, Brent Harvey and Drew Petrie among others). So Scott left and was replaced by Rhyce Shaw who coached only two seasons, who was succeeded by David Noble who coached even less than that, following which "the great white hope" Alastair Clarkson arrived and coached just nine games before needing extended personal leave. Exhausted? Spare a thought for someone like Curtis Taylor who has played for six senior coaches in five years on the list.
Tumblr media
Clarkson eventually returned for four dead-rubber clashes at the end of 2023 but is finally enjoying clear air and a full pre-season with his young list and without the spectre of the Hawthorn racism scandal looming - at least for now. The coach would be looking at the talent North Melbourne have amassed in the last two national drafts and daring to dream... Could Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw, McKercher and Duursma one day be looked back on as being as signficant a haul as Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and Jordan Lewis were at the Hawks in 2005? Perhaps so but it has not all been blue skies overhead at Arden Street, given at the time of this writing Tarryn Thomas has been suspended for 18 matches by the AFL for abuse toward women and his contract finally torn up by the club. Thomas was a distraction the club could ill afford and a toxic presence it is better off without, despite desperately needing players of his considerable talent.
A side with so much youth needs leaders along every line to drive the standards off the field and provide direction on the field. The exits of Goldstein, Ziebell and Ben Cunnington will leave a leadership vacuum at North Melbourne even if their best football was clearly behind them and it remains a concern as to who will step up to fill it. Jy Simpkin, a co-captain, is one who has demonstrated loyalty to the club and resilience by managing 18 games in 2023 despite injuries. Nick Larkey, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Cam Zurhaar possess all the talent and have now moved into an age and experience profile where they should start to throw others on to their back and win the occasional game. It was a surprise to see Luke McDonald tapped to go around again as a co-captain given his lack of awareness, limited skill and a question mark on whether he would be in any other club's best 22.
The plan at North Melbourne for 2024 would be fairly simple: get games into their young guns, become harder to play and score against and put a stop to the blowout losses (despite being more competitive last year than in 2022, they still suffered seven 40-plus point defeats). It should not be beyond them to double the number of wins from three to six and demonstrate to their fans and the wider football world that after backfiring and stalling out a few times, the car is finally moving forward.
Déjà vu in the bottom four continues, next up is Hawthorn…

Roos name co-captains after Ziebell resignation
A Set small text size A Set the default text size A Set large text size North Melbourne players have historically voted to promote Luke McDonald and Jy Simpkin to the co-captaincy after long-time skipper Jack Ziebell stood down ahead of the 2023 AFL season. Zeibell will remain part of the leadership group after six years and 111 games in the top job. But father-son pick McDonald (27) and…

North Melbourne - Thankyou to members
The North Melbourne Football club took to Twitter and Instagram to thank its members for the 2022 season.
Tumblr media
The photo features best and fairest winner Jy Simpkin surrounded by North members with signs cheering on the team and showing gratitude to board members for their continued efforts throughout the season.
Tumblr media
The post contains significance due the fact North Melbourne had broken its membership record for the third straight season.
The tally of 50,191 thousand breaks previous tallies of 46 thousand and 35 thousand.
More remarkable is the fact that the club has finished last for two successive seasons.
The post is very clearly aimed at all North Melbourne supporters who supported the club during the season.
Engagement was very high with people commenting on how they feature in the post or are trying to garner positivity for the upcoming season with the messiah, Alastair Clarkson.
Tumblr media
It relates extremely well to past discussions in class, it has an active target audience which may be smaller than the majority of other clubs, but it does encapsulate the undying loyalty that a smaller club may possess.

Senior Kangaroos must step up: Jy Simpkin
Senior Kangaroos must step up: Jy Simpkin
Midfielder Jy Simpkin says the onus is on North Melbourne’s senior players to step up and find a way to lift the Kangaroos amid a tough season. The Kangaroos are on a seven-game losing run, with their past five defeats by 50 points or more, and face reigning premiers Melbourne next. Vice-captain Simpkin, who returns after missing the thumping loss to Port Adelaide through a combination of left…

Jy Simpkin for 2024!
Jy Simpkin has signed on until 2024!
Sounds good to us!
Simpkin was drafted in 2016 and debuted in 2017 during the North Melbourne vs West Coast game at Etihad Stadium. He then went on to come second to the Syd Barker award in 2020 but then won in 2021. Along with the 2021 Syd Barker award, he also won the 2021 North Melbourne Best and Fairest beating Ben Cunnington and current captain Jack Ziebell.
Tumblr media
Simpkin averaged 16 disposals and two goals, playing as a 16-year-old in the TAC Cup in 2014, and missed most of the 2016 seasons with a broken leg. He has played a total of 95 games with 35 career goals.
Simpkin has been a great asset to our club since his debut and we look forwards to seeing his passion and skill grow within our organisation. During all his speeches on social media, podcasts and the official speech, Simpkin was quick to thank all those who have helped him and assisted him to becoming better. He was grateful for all those who have played a part in his career including David Noble, Jack Ziebell and even stated that Ben Cunnington 'helped [him] so much in the last few years to get [him to where he is today]. He’s an awesome fella’ (North Melbourne, 2021, para. 9).

NMFC Are: Bound For Glory
The North Melbourne Football Club will embark on its 153rd season in 2022 and although the club has an extensive and rich history, the current state of the playing group has us all extremely excited about what the future holds.
Jy Simpkin, Jaidyn Stephenson, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Tarryn Thomas have pleasantly surprised the AFL community and look set to lead us to greatness.
“[Simpkin has] all the qualities of a potential future club captain.”
Casey Mccarthy – Zero Hanger
Down forward, Nick Larkey has bags of seven in the bank – and is capable of more – while the young Ben McKay is holding down the fort at the other end.
We also welcome new recruit Callum Coleman-Jones from Richmond who can take a big grab and although the club says goodbye to Robbie Tarrant, we can’t help but hide the grin off the back of C-J’s arrival.
With so many of these young guns taking the field at once you’d have to be crazy to not want to join North Melbourne in their ‘Bound for Glory’ in 2022. Click on the link below to purchase a membership before our season kicks off…
https://membership.nmfc.com.au/
“But why should I buy one?” Well, if the playing group hasn’t already convinced you then some big-time contests will. And that’s why we’re here, to take a look at four highly anticipated matches that will take place next season.
1. North Melbourne vs. Essendon
It’s no surprise that the Shinboners have a beef with every club, but the Roos and Dons have a particularly bitter rivalry.
From an almost-merger in the pre-VFL era to Drew Petrie’s ‘Frank the Tank’ celebration in the 2014 Elimination Final, the two clubs have always produced unforgettable moments, albeit sometimes for the wrong reasons from a North Melbourne perspective.
youtube
Nevertheless, we’re certain to face the Bombers again in 2022 but North find themselves on an unfavourable streak. The last time the Roos managed to overcome the Bombers was back in 2016 and ever since then it’s been all Essendon.
Ben Rutten’s side swept North in 2021 but despite being drastically outplayed in the first meeting, David Noble’s troops almost pulled off an unlikely win eight weeks later when they met for the second time.
I’m sure our boys will come out firing when the two clubs meet again…
2. North Melbourne vs. Hawthorn
This will be a battle of the rebuilders.
Hawthorn seem to be going down that sort of path at the moment, and as for North Melbourne, we’ve gotten the hardest year out of the way and look ready to explode.
But that’s not to say this won’t be a tight tussle. The Hawks and Roos have played their fair share of close bouts and that’s what fans received when they met in 2021. Unfortunately for Hawthorn, they became North’s first scalp in what played out to be a Tassie thriller.
youtube
With both squads loaded with young talent, make sure to note this one down on the calendar.
3. North Melbourne vs. Western Bulldogs
We still want revenge…
The 128-point drubbing we suffered at the hands of the Dogs on Good Friday will be a tough memory to forget but the fact we improved by almost 100 points when we met the Dogs the second time was a terrific sign.
Having an extremely young midfield against one that was stacked with Treloar, Bontempelli, Smith, Hunter, Macrae, Dunkley and Liberatore was difficult to combat but now, with Cunnington back, Phillips and Powell prepared and potentially Jason Horne-Francis in the squad, I wouldn’t be surprised if we whip the Bulldogs by an unimaginable margin. I’m being facetious of course… but still.
We’ve got this to fuel the fire as well -
youtube
4. North Melbourne vs. Melbourne
The Demons are unquestionably the benchmark of the AFL right now and their 2021 Grand Final victory was as empathic as they come.
So, it’s fair to say this one is going to be a massive test for our relatively young side but there’s no chance in hell we’re writing off Cunnington and Co.
youtube
North stuck with Melbourne for a large portion of their 2021 meeting but a fourth quarter blitz from the Dees saw them run away 30-point winners.
Like I’ve mentioned, we’ve gained experience and are genuinely better as a side so there’s no reason why we cant knock off the league’s best when the time comes.

Multimedia Storytelling
Multimedia storytelling portrays a story over multiple variations, such as text, audio and video. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are platforms where these can be easily published as the design allows for the image/audio and the option to include text underneath. Youtube is relatively similar although the graphics are larger and sometimes you have to scroll down to view the text (especially on a smartphone or tablet).
For a club to have engaging content they must have a variety of forms, but at the same time, they need to keep their ‘focus’ (Good Sports, 2021, p.4) on what they want to achieve. Such as more views to their website, more feed engagement, or an increase in those who participate in giveaways and competitions.
Tumblr media
Multimedia storytelling encourages organisations to ‘immerse the audience’ (Van Krieken, 2018, p.4) in audio, text and graphic information. It allows for the organisations and athletes to reach out to their fans and talk to them rather than be limited to text. This allows for fans to see the emotion, actions and physical appearance of those communicating through the content.
Multimedia storytelling is creating new opportunities for organisations and members to connect off the field on game day, during the week, and even during the offseason. It allows for clubs to announce changes within the club and on the field. And to inform members of upcoming giveaways and community events. Below is an Instagram post by the North Melbourne Football Club, and they have included a short snip of an interview with player Jy Simpkin and then redirected fans to the NMFC App for the full interview. This not only allows for their Instagram followers to view content but it drives them towards another platform where they could potentially find exclusive content.
Tumblr media
Although there are limited challenges that come with multimedia storytelling content, there should be some considerations such as sequencing, making sure the players stay relevant to the topic and do not ramble as many video platforms have limited time allocated, and they must be able to physically stay within the frame otherwise they will look unprofessional.
Some current issues may be that it’s another thing that an organisation has to monitor and stay up to date in case there are some technical difficulties. Some of the organisations may go heavy on text rather than what is spoken about in the audio. This may mean that the organisation needs to allocate more time for training staff or hiring social media technicians who are able to improve the current set-up and create more in-depth and easy flowing content.
Outside of the considerations and post layout, there are many positives to multimedia storytelling if organisations understand how to utilise it to increase engagement. Content that is engaging and relevant allows for talking points within their fan base community, as well as boosts views and engagement. These will also create active social media communities with their fans/followers where they can reach out to the organisations and athletes and discuss topics

Cunnington praises support in return from testicular tumour
Cunnington praises support in return from testicular tumour
North Melbourne ironman Ben Cunnington broke down in tears when describing the support he had received and his determination to return to the field after being diagnosed with a testicular tumour. Cunnington, 30, finished runner-up in the Kangaroos’ Syd Barker Medal count to youngster Jy Simpkin – the sixth time the robust midfielder had enjoyed a top-two finish – and his emotional speech touched…

Tex facing season-ending ban, Roo fined
Tumblr media
TAYLOR Walker's season could be over, with the Adelaide skipper offered a two-match ban for his sling tackle that knocked out Greater Western Sydney star Josh Kelly. Walker was adjudged to have slung Kelly into the ground with excessive force during the third-quarter of Saturday's night match in Canberra, with the tackle graded by Match Review Officer Michael Christian as careless conduct with high impact to the head. Christian's assessment triggered a two-game suspension, which is set to rule Walker out of the Crows' final two home-and-away matches against North Melbourne and Carlton. Elsewhere, Kangaroos forward Jarrad Waite was offered a fine for his high bump on Western Bulldog Jackson Trengove. Waite caught Trengove high and late in the opening term of Sunday's clash at Etihad Stadium, but was only hit with a $3,000 penalty after the incident was assessed by Christian as careless conduct with low impact to the head. Roos midfielder Trent Dumont was fined $2,000 for rough conduct on Ed Richards in the same match, while Bulldogs veteran Dale Morris was also offered a $2,000 fine for tripping Jy Simpkin. Sydney on-baller Dan Hannebery was fined $1,500 for striking Melbourne's James Harmes in Sunday's contest at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while Demons young gun Clayton Oliver was fined $1,000 for making careless contact with an umpire. Port Adelaide's Aidyn Johnson was fined $2,000 for rough conduct against West Coast defender Tom Cole. Meanwhile, Geelong champion Gary Ablett, who was accused of diving by sections of the media during the first term of last Saturday's loss to Hawthorn at the MCG, has avoided a fine. Collingwood midfielder Levi Greenwood was cleared of any wrongdoing for making contact with an injured player for an incident involving Brisbane captain Dayne Zorko. It was the view of the MRO that contact made by Greenwood was negligible and that the Magpie was not aware of any potential injury to Zorko. St Kilda defender Nathan Brown had already been referred straight to the AFL Tribunal for his late bump that concussed Essendon speedster Adam Saad during the opening stanza of last Friday night's game at Etihad, while Bombers defender Cale Hooker had already accepted a $1,500 sanction for misconduct against Daniel McKenzie. Brown's tribunal hearing will take place on Tuesday night. Read the full article

Mark LeCras will start for the Eagles
FORMER Fremantle captain David Mundy will miss Sunday’s clash against North Melbourne after he was a late withdrawal from the Dockers’ selected team.

North has named an unchanged team.
