Ship Stories/Fanfictions Recommendation: Kakashi Hatake/Anko Mitarashi (KakaAnko)
Tumblr media
(update)
So I kind of like Kakanko
Since Naruto in a way became Kakashi's "light/hope" in life you could say. I could see Anko with him since she has similar personality to young Uzumaki. Almost being female!Naruto really xP (not Boruto version tho).
And since both of them experienced being betrayed and left alone by people they looked up to (White Fang, Orochi), they could understand each other better then anyone else in village.
I always also found that there is a lot of potential for intriguing chemistry between those two. Calm and wild but both witty and trollish enough and a lot of unexplored story. And it’s good reflected in fics that I will recommend here. Now mind you, it’s not just ships fics. If you just enjoy their characters alone, you will also find something here.
Update/edit number God knows which one:I added few more
Dissimulation by Deviant Nation  and Dissimulation (Ending) by Jaded_nobody
| Drama/Adventure | Summary: Because little girls who are traitors with secrets untold and memories that can't be recalled are better off dead. This is for the sake of Konohagakure, this mission is a good thing. Or so the Council says. Anko was never meant to come home alive. |
This is not really KakaAnko ship fic. It’s Anko-centric story. Plot is dark so watch out but interesting and quite realistic. It dwells on what happend to Anko after Orochimaru’s betrayal. If you like just Anko alone as character you might still like it.
Now original story ends in the worst imaginable place! But good news! Other writer (Jaded_nobody) picked up story and is now writing ending for it. Please send support for this person if you enjoy it. Comments and positive reinforcement is one of the best motivations for writer to keep writing the story!
eyesight to the blind by meatballs in the impala
| Drama/Romance | Summary: After Naruto's departure, everything in Konoha changes, yet it somehow stays the same. Kakashi-centric. Kakashi/Anko. |
Now THIS is a gem of Kakanko ship. This fic lay fondation for my interpretation of Kakashi and Anko relationship. Writer really has great take on them. Their interactions are reallty entraining and they nicely bounce off each other while slowly developing believable bond. This fic was the reason why I started to like this ship, with Anko being little playfull sassy boss-bitch that she is and Kakashi’s sarcastic deadpan wit. It's still being updating but updates are slow. So again, comment as much good things you can for writer’s motivation.
Overall all author fics with this ship are a ton of fun. So check other works of her.
Rise of the Rokudaime by Nate Grey
| Drama/Angst |  Summary: An assassination attempt on Konohamaru summons the winds of change in Konoha, and Kakashi finds that he can no longer ignore the beckon of destiny. Set during White Dog Night's timeskip. Not Another Romance |
There is really no shiping materal in this fic. It’s just Ibiki, Anko and Kakashi fun interactions and little bit of interesting politics in Leaf village.
Sweet Price to Pay by thir13enth
| Humor | Summary: Anko drags Kakashi to eat with her...at her favorite dango shop, no doubt. But what are her true intentions in bringing him along with her? Because she pitied him that he was always alone, or something more subtle? Suggested AnkoKaka |
Now in this one-shot they are quite mean to each other. Short and spicy I suppose.
Scar Deep by thir13enth
| Humor/Romance |  Summary: Complete. Trick for trick, joke for joke, plot for plot, wrapped all up in revenge-when will things get too far? KakaAnko |
Here is a bit of how their relationship could function if they were a pair.
Jealousy by sweetsheart
| Romance/Humor |  Summary: Anko's going to find out that dating arguably the most powerful ninja of her generation doesn't come without its quirks. With the arrival of the mail, jealousy rears its head – can Kakashi make it up to Anko? KakaAnko, T for language. |
One shot with fluffy wholesome feeling to it. It’s quite accurate interpretation, if they would be a couple, fitting for their personalities.
Returning Something by GrayWolf555
| Romance |  Summary: Memories fade, usually from time, but occasionally for other reasons. Anko gets back what was taken from her in the war. KakaAnko. Oneshot. M for a reason. Just some good, old fashioned smut. |
NSFW but quite nice dynamic of how they comfort each other in harder times. (After Asuma’s death)
Forged in Fire by AlphaEph19
| Adventure/Family |  Summary: The shinobi way of life is not kind to families. Many drift apart, or are torn apart. Sometimes the blood that binds relatives together becomes a curse. But not all families are linked by blood. Some rise up out of suffering, formed by individuals who have had enough of being broken down - they want to build anew. These are the strongest families... the ones forged in fire. AU |
Anko with Kakashi are forced by Hiruzen to helps with Sasuke's trauma after Uchiha massacre. So fluff it is.
Chasing a Legend by Voiceofsummer
| Adventure/Friendship |   Summary:  During one of the most crucial missions in the history of Konoha, Sakumo is forced to make an all too different decision. The White Fang dies as a hero and not in disgrace. The life of Hatake Kakashi is changed forever. AU. |
It has more ship teases then actually ship but it’s really good Kakashi-centric story during Third War.
Let Me Take Him by Durriken
| Humor | Summary:  What reason could Anko possibly have for wanting to help Naruto? Let's find out. |
Anko talk with Hiruzen about taking care of Naruto oneshot. Fluff? I think?
Dominion by  Don'tChaseWhat'sGone
| Drama | Summary:  Kakashi Hatake meets all the requirements befitting a Hokage. The strength of ten men, the respect of a village, and unwavering dedication. The toll it takes on unexplained relationships is a different story. |
Now this fic takes on a lot of interesting things and quite complications that this ship would face if they would be together. It touches on Orochimaru’s return to village after the IV war and Anko bitterness toward that idea and more.
Sensual Country by  EEevee
| Romance/Humor | Summary:   [challenge fic] Dancing, possessiveness, and country music. Why? Because country is sexy! XD . |
Summary speaks for itself. Anko’s suffering of reluctant dance partner.
Drunken Misery by Meda-Chan
| Summary: Ever since Asuma died, Kurenai drank everynight. Kakashi finds her outside the sake shop and helps her home, Anko with her......This as a kakashikurenaiAnko fiction requested...OK, I got the whole story on there now, im pleased with my reviews. |
Smut for smut although it’s kind of sad one.
The Interrogator by LunarSkies2383
| Romance/Humor | Summary: Anko Mitarashi can be a fierce interrogator. But concerning a certain dog she'll make him bark before the day is done. |
Again, it’s a lemon but this time fun one and more lighthearted
Gelato by LiraWM
| Romance | Summary: The icecream was never this hard to get and taste: KakashiAnko, KakaAnko |
Longer story with smut
Anko & Kakashi One Shots & Minifics   by seductivewifey
| Romance/Angst  | Summary: This is an ongoing collection of my work dedicated to the kakaanko ship. I personally follow anime only so don't be surprised when things don't fall in line with the manga. This should also clearly tell you I don't own these characters in anyway. 🍋🍋🍋Everything is pretty citrusy so please no one under the age of 18. |
Now I generally don’t trust wattpad webste with good fics. But there are exceptions. And that’s one of them. There is smut a but really fun one. With Anko shining with her personality but also touching a little bit some of their insecurities. Alternative link
A Bad time for Poor Judgement  by Whistler1234
| Romance/Adventure  |  Summary: Kakashi has been charged with bringing in a rogue ninja but she has other ideas.Contains adult themes and language. |
So... this fic was deleted buuuuuuuuuuut thanks to black magic, the way to recover this fic was found... This story is ton of fun. The tags will give away that it’s hot smut story but with a lot of deceptive ninja elements in it. There is a lot of sensuality without even getting into the explicit scenes but it's not easy read. The way author write it, is quite ambiguous and leaves many "fill in the blanks" stuff.
Take It All Off by Annwyd
| Humor/Romance | Summary:  A lighthearted glimpse of the sex lives of personally dysfunctional ninja. AnkoKaka. |
I like things that are implied in this fic. Like the last line “Tastes like fabric”, I could find symbolic things in it xP
Friends by TwoTails
| Drama/Romance | Summary: NOW COMPLETE! 1st in AnkoKakashi Friends series. Anko is exhausted after coming back from a mission. An innocent drink or four with Kakashi leads to an interesting test between friends. M for future adult situations. PS, I don't own Naruto.  |
Lighthearted story of them becoming friends with benefits. Last chapter has smut in it but they have good fun flirting with Kakashi taking the lead this time. Author wrote many sequels to this. So check on author page for continuation of this fanfic.
Naruto: Altered History by Geor-sama
| Adventure | Summary: Meet Uzumaki Naruto, the number one prankster ninja. He lives in Konoha...and has a dark secret so large that NOBODY knows, not even Naruto.  |
Now this in not really Kakanko fic, it has only teases of the ship. But it’s good Anko story, it’s sells the idea of sensei Anko and her struggle of being a teacher. In that, Naruto was Anko's apprentice (his unusual graduation meant the teams were already decided etc) and there is a point where she realizes that she is teaching Naruto the same way Orochimaru taught her. Anko was very much invested in proving that she wasn't a monster because of Orochimaru in that fic which is notable given that some characters (like Kurenai?!) straight up hated her for it.
About a Book by Arkhe
| Humor | Summary: Anko's having a bad day and she's all up for sharing the pain. Kakashi becomes an unwilling participant. [Lime scented]  |
It’s sfw. Just Anko teasing Kakashi a bit, while giving her review about his  literatura.
Kage Regrets by MsSage
| Angst/Hurt/Comfort | Summary: As long as he didn't act on it, he mused, everything would probably be alright. Kakashi centric musings as he wonders about Anko, Iruka and everything else. Might do a chapter from Anko's POV if reviewers are keen for it, but its a one shot for the time being.  |
Now, this one is a bit tragic, no deaths in it, it’s just melancholic. But it’s well written, some of you may like it.
A Bite of Dango by jiemae
| Romance/Hurt/Comfort | Summary: She hated sweets—despised them, really. So it must have been a mistake that she wound up inside a fictional character known for loving them. It must have been. [SI-as-Anko—Drabble]  |
As it says, it’s self-insert. But Anko still feels like her, so I wil give it a pass. Plus bonus, Kushina and Minarto still lives in this one and trying to restore her memories.
To Feel Alive by Warrior and Scholar
| Romance/Hurt/Comfort | Summary: Kakashi loses a partner on a mission. Kakashi is hurt by the loss can Anko help him to feel alive? R&R Rated: M for later chapters.  |
Kakashi and Anko drink together and play around (but in sfw way, until last chapter). Kakashi may act a bit more goofy here then normal but he is drunk, so you know.
One Eye, Full of Wisdom by MrBright01
| Adventure/Humor | Summary: Kakashi survived his losses in spirit as well as in body, and having learned both wisdom and intellect from his experiences, he now seeks to pass those traits on to his students. Story emphasis is on tactical fighting, mind games, adventure, and the occasional bout of humor. GenFic, no story stealing OC's or creepy romance between children. Current Arc: Jashin Needs YOU. .  |
Fic doesn't focus on their shipping but they have great interactions there. Specifically in “Omake” chapters. You can read only those if you just want to see them trolling each other and others.
A Hero's Reward by PurpleFlamingo
| Romance | Summary: Kakashi was having a rough time, having died, talked to his father, and been revived, all in the span of a few hours. Now, he was in the hospital, recovering while the village was repairing itself. And, of course, Anko wanted to pay him a visit. After hours, of course. Kakashi/Anko  |
Just smut after the Pain defeat. With Anko and Kakashi not so subtly hiding that they are seeing each other.
Mission: Testing subjects by LiraWM
| Romance |
SFW. Kakashi and Anko go on a mission test, when they have to pretend to be a married couple and discover the identity of their target that is testing their “gather information” abilities.  Yeah, the idea sounds cliche but it’s executed in a good way.
Histriōnis by viridian_house
| Angst/Hurt/Comfort| Summary: Anko has a favor to ask of Kakashi—as for why, well, she's sure he already has his suspicions.
SFW (for first two chapter)
Very well written. Touches on Anko's insecurities on how she is seen by the village. On how she uses sex as coping and how Orochimaru ruined her up mentality and her mixed feelings about Sarutobi. Also fic mentions Kakashi’s insecurities about potentially being new hokage, his anger toward his father- which prevents him from creating connection with Sasuke to stop him from leaving for Orochimaru and so Anko decides to step in.

Characters: Hatake Kakashi & Uchiha Obito (and Team Minato in general)
Rating G
5428 words
For an escort mission Team Minato needs two guards in disguise as handmaidens. One is obviously Rin, but as Kakashi fails to be convincing in the role another girl shows up unexpectedly...
“The mission is to escort the daughter of the Daimyo safely back to her home”, Minato said, closing the scroll he had just studied. He had just returned from the Hokage office to collect it and didn't have time to really look at it until now. Kakashi stretched his neck. Escort mission? Easy! “The trouble is as follows,” Minato continued, his face in a small frown, “even if she is in disguise and travelling as a plain girl, it would just be too unusual to have four Konoha ninjas travelling with her.” He put a hand into his blond hair and looked over his students. “So the thing is: It would probably be good if two of you would also go into disguise like you are just travelling along with her.” Kakashi smelled the bad news all through the fabric of his mask. “As handmaidens,” Minato finished and both Kakashi and Obito took a step back. “Handmaidens?!”
“Well obviously Rin will be one,” Minato said, hands moving defensively in front of his body, “She is good at defending herself and others which will make her the perfect person for such a job.” Rin’s eyes glistened at the praise, Obito’s cheeks reddened at her smile but Kakashi had his eyes locked tight at his teacher, eyes wide in terror: “And the other handmaiden?” Obito’s head now also snapped back. There was silence for a moment or two, only a bird flying overhead was heard crying. Minato-sensei looked everywhere but Kakashi’s face, which could only spell trouble. “Well, first I thought that it should be Kakashi”, he said and Obito started laughing as soon as the sentence began. “He is smaller - smaller than the rest of you and his features are somehow softer…” His voice trailed off and Kakashi mulled over the ethics of hitting your own teacher. Would the punishment be worth it? Instead he knocked Obito in the head and quieted his laughter down.
“Bakashi-” Obito said frowning, “That hurt. Someone as small and soft as you should not do that. That’s not ladylike.” Kakashi hit him again, close to just jumping on him completely and pressing him into the green grass beneath him. Obito was such a brat, never able to shut up when he was supposed to. “Boys, boys” Minato went in between them, as always a bit unnerved by their constant fighting. “I’m not sure if Kakashi can be the second handmaiden exactly because of what just happened. He is just not- not good at pretending to be small and delicate.” For some reason Kakashi felt insulted by those words: “Not all girls are small and delicate”, he shot back. “Yes, of course, but I need you to not only look like a handmaiden, but also act like one. I’m just not sure that is a job for you…” Minato shrugged his shoulders.
“Look, I will just assume you are the handmaiden alright?” Kakashi rolled his eyes disapprovingly but Minato continued. “I will make sure you have whatever clothing you need. However, I will also try to find a replacement if possible. Is that agreeable Kaakshi?” He was being diplomatic. Kakashi hated the idea of possibly missing out on a mission because his acting skills weren’t good enough. Acting. A skill really only useful for people who got themselves captured and needed to get out of tricky situations. Kakashi was not one of these people, so he never needed it. On the other hand Kakashi really didn’t feel like playing dress up and so he said: “Fine.” Obito giggled again beside him, whispering to Rin under his hand: “Kakashi as a girl! Can you imagine?” They were dismissed to prepare for the operation, it was going to be a two day mission.
While Kakashi was preparing he heard no news from Minato-sensei. The teacher had not come by with a wig or dresses or other information, so he was pleased when he made his way to the village for their meeting point. After all, Minato-sensei had clearly found someone to play the girl for them, maybe a girl from the academy that was their age, and since Kakashi had not been asked to stay at home it was clear as day that Obito had been chosen to sit the mission out. One could only be so lucky so many times in a day, Kakashi thought, completely content with how all of this had worked out for him. He made it to the gates with five minutes to spare, acutely aware that the others would probably appear about ten minutes after the assigned time. Nobody came as late as Obito did, obviously, but Minato and Rin could also learn a lesson or two with being on time. At least in Kakashi’s eyes, just one minute delay was a minute too much.
Rin appeared first, wearing a nice violet kimono with a white bow at the front. It had a little opening on the side so she could walk (and fight) if necessary. “I can hide the shuriken and kunai underneath” she grinned at Kakashi, lifting the fabric just a little so he could see the weapons strapped to her thighs and hips. Very practical, Kakashi nodded to her to acknowledge that this had been a good idea and she blushed from his approval alone. Ten more minutes passed and neither Minato nor Obito showed up. Another ten. Kakashi tapped his foot onto the ground in anger and disappointment. What was taking them so long? Then eventually he could see his teacher's blond hair walk down the road of the village to the gates. He wasn’t alone. When Kakashi could see them better he could make out the figure of a dark haired girl, wearing a long kimono not unlike Rin’s. He blinked.
The closer they got the more he could see of her. She was looking down, keeping her eyes averted from him as was asked of a modest girl. Her long hair was put up at the sides of her head in two round buns and she had a little flower stuck in the side of her head. She really looked very pretty. Minato stopped in front of his students. “Alright guys, we are ready to go.” Kakashi looked from his teacher to the girl and back and Minato said: “Oh, this is Mikoto.” The girl bowed a little too deep in front of them, speaking in hushed voices as if any loud sound out of her mouth would have been too improper: “This one is Mikoto.” By way of speaking Kakashi wondered if she was an actual handmaiden. Not that it mattered, they could protect two girls even without Obito. “One is honoured by your presence ninja-san” she said bowing to Kakashi “And kunoichi-san”, she bowed to Rin, who giggled a little at the gesture.
“We will head out and pick up the daughter of the daimyo on our first stop about an hour from here and then move on. I want you to keep the girls in the middle Kakashi, so I will go ahead and you will walk behind,” Kakashi nodded and as the little team turned to go he couldn't help but think of Obito. How had the boy taken the news of being left out of this particular mission? Not that Kakashi worried about him, Kakashi really didn’t care. It was shaping up to be a very calm and relaxing mission without the nuisance Uchiha and with this Mikoto person instead, who somehow caught his eye. They turned together and left the village through the gates, staying in the formation that Minato had mentioned with Rin and Mikoto walking very close to each other in the centre. “This one is very excited to be with you on this mission, kunoichi-san”, Mikoto whispered to Rin, but Kakashi could hear it anyway. Rin smiled back: “I’m sure we will get through it all without major issues, Mikoto-san.”
Now that he walked behind her, Kakashi had more time to take a closer look at Mikoto. She was walking rather strangely, as if something heavy was weighing her right leg down, maybe she too had been given a few weapons to defend herself. The hair at the back was made clumsily, but it was holding steady with hairpins. Her kimono was light blue, nicely stitched in cherry blossoms pattern on sleeves and back. Kakashi had never met a handmaiden before, mostly because royalty in that sense did not exist in Konoha, but everything he could see about Mikoto seemed almost exactly like he’d imagine one to be. She was beautiful and graceful in a way no girl he had ever met had been. Kunoichi were a different kind of girl, more hardened, less drawn back. Still, Rin did her job remarkably well too, moving very similarly to Mikoto. They seemed strangely familiar, their elbows touching teasingly. Maybe they had known each other before this mission and that was how she had been added to the team.
The daimyo’s daughter waited at the arranged meeting point, dressed almost exactly like Rin and Mikoto. A red kimono with a dark red bow, hair up with hairpins. Kakashi noticed the escort guard immediately in the trees around her. To the untrained eye it must have looked like nobody had escorted this young girl at all, but a shinobi saw through their hiding places instantly. They dispersed after a slight nod from Minato-sensei, and Rin and Mikoto took the daughter in between them. Minato explained the way forward very softly to her, how they would take a day to march up to her father’s residence, how she would have nothing to worry about at all during the travels. While his teacher continued talking about how they would keep her safe in case there was an attack, Kakashi’s eyes wandered to Mikoto. She was standing a little away, hands clasped together behind her back. She looked very cute with the light highlighting her black hair.
Now with their mission truly underway Kakashi did not allow himself to sneak glances at Mikoto quite as often as he did so far. He needed to concentrate on the forest around him and the sky above him to keep the client safe. After all, the most important thing about shinobi life was a successful end to a mission and nothing else. Somewhere out there was a war going on, so assassins, rogue nin or other bandits could always be around, ready to pounce on anyone that seemed to have any kind of money. It was only a day’s walk, hardly half a day if a shinobi could sprint by themselves, but the client moved slower and needed more rest. So it was especially important that Kakashi kept their backs free. He only looked from time to time over to Mikoto, who now spoke quietly to the Fire Lord’s daughter. He’d never been fascinated by a person before, especially not a girl, but Kakashi just couldn’t help himself.
For about the first four hours nothing happened. They went about their merry ways. Stopping after two hours for a break of food and drink and then continuing on. Mikoto had brought onigiri in a little box that she had kept in her bag. She offered one to Kakashi without looking at him directly, eyes turned to her feet, voice quiet and whispering: “Maybe you would like some, ninja-san. I made them myself.” Of course Kakashi had taken some and eaten them. They weren’t as good as his own self made onigiri, but he still liked them. With time and age she would probably grow out of her times as a handmaiden and become a good housewife. At least, that’s what he had read in novels. There were some in his father’s possessions about people falling in love and getting married and usually the woman, who was often a housewife at the end of the story, cooked very well.
Soon after their break Kakashi noticed movement not far out from them among the trees. About five or six people trailed them, maybe they had been behind them when they had been resting already. He steeled his senses and could figure out by the way they were walking hestitedly and loudly that they might be lowly trained shinobi, most likely just bandits whose eye they had caught by having three women in nice kimonos among them. He flexed his hand at his side, ready to pull the tantou from its shaft immediately if necessary. “Is everything alright back there, girls?” Minato- sensei said, sounding as casually as he could possibly sound, but Kakashi, and Rin most likely too, noticed the infliction immediately. He, too, had noticed that people were following them. Right, so this was it.
The first one broke through the trees. A scruffy looking man with long brown hair and a brown beard. He carried a large spear and aimed it directly at Rin, who was immediately taken out of harm's way by their teacher. The daughter of the daimyo and Mikoto screamed and stumbled backwards, while two more bandits broke through the crowns of the trees, separating the girls further. Kakashi pulled his tantou, infused it with lightning like he had just learned recently and sprung forward to help protect Rin and keep the bandits away from the other girls. Rin had already picked shuriken from the pouch on her thighs and took out two attackers with them on her own, while Minato darted around taking out two more. Kakashi knocked down the fifth one with his lightning sword, making sure he would not be able to get up again. He blinked over the unconscious man at the ground. That had turned out to be quick and easy.
A scream ripped his eyes away from the prisoners. One of the girls was screaming. Kakashi turned on his heels in a matter of seconds. Six! There were six! One of them must have slipped their grasp. He didn’t know where the girls had gone to hide, but he needed to hurry to help them. Maybe Mikoto had been given weapons, but she still might just be an untrained civilian who needed his help. He let his sensitive nose lead him to a little clearing not far from the road they were on. His fingers spun signals on his own, but before he could speak the Jutsu into existence a truly spectacular sight opened up in front of him. Mikoto, hair flying in the wind, turned on her right arm, kimono all around her legs. She kicked the bandit in the face, forcing him to stumble backwards dizzily. Then she got up and her fingers entwined the symbols together to a large fireball that launched forward. The attacker screeched and dodged the fire, but Mikoto had already lunged forward and knocked him clean out with a punch to the head.
It took Kakashi a moment to realise that his mouth was hanging open, his hands frozen in the air in tiger form as if they’d just been forgotten there. Mikoto stretched a little and pushed the dirt out of her clothing. There was blood on it too, if only a little. “One hopes that this will not stain..”, she whispered, more to herself than to anyone else. Then she moved over to Daimyo's daughter, helped her up and asked if she was in any way hurt. The other girl only shook her head, equally as stunned by what she had just witnessed as Kakashi was. He watched both of them move together back towards the road and somehow stood frozen in place. When Miktoto passed him without seeing him he openly allowed himself to stare. The fight had messed up her updo a little, but it had reddened her cheeks from natural exhaustion, which looked good on her. Her chest was heaving with breath and Kakashi watched how it changed her figure. It felt like someone had punched him in the gut. She was very pretty and good at fighting.
They returned to Minato and Rin who had tied up the rest of the bandits in the meanwhile, trusting Kakashi to take care of it. “I see, Kakashi got rid of the last of them”, Minato said cheerfully as Kakashi finally also made it back to them. He felt a warmth in his heart that moved up to his cheeks. “I didn’t do it”, he said hastily in a higher pitched voice than he wanted. “Mikoto was the one fighting.” Minato raised an eyebrow in amusement. “Is that so?” he asked, “Well, if you say that it must be true.” Kakashi turned to her, fingers a bit sweaty. She smiled at him, eyes again modestly turned to her feet. “One thanks you, ninja-san”, she whispered and Kakashi felt his chest swell. He did not understand why her thanks made him feel as good as it did, but he revelled in it.
Taking the daughter back into their midst, they moved on, only about a three hour trip to her residence. Kakashi’s heart beat steady to his ears, especially when his gaze fell over Mikoto. And it often did. He tried to breathe in deeply, quiet himself down, so he could focus on his surroundings again. Who knew how many more bandits were waiting out there, he couldn’t be distracted. The mission was the most important thing at this very moment. He had a spotless record so far, never having failed anything he set out to do, so he wasn’t going to start now. Mikoto’s hair was shining in the light that broke through the leaves overhead. He found himself staring at it dreamily, at the way her eyes moved when she smiled, at the delicate way her fingers entangled behind her back. She really was very beautiful. But then he tore himself away again. No, the mission was a priority.
To keep it together he pinched his own fingers until they started bleeding, giving him an excuse to focus on the pain instead of the turmoil in his stomach. He wandered back to the romance novels of his father he had read. The description of the way the characters felt before they got married and how similar that was to the way he felt now. Kakashi knew he still was a little young to get married, but Mikoto was pretty, she in time would be a good cook, and she was also a good fighter. She had all qualities Kakashi would look for in someone to live with. That was, after all, how it was in fiction: when a guy likes a girl they got married and moved in together. He breathed in and out deeply at the image in his head. Mikoto in her blue kimono, only speaking in hushed tones to him, making onigiri for dinner everyday, training with him in the backyard of his giant house to get better. He felt the flush on his cheeks. It sounded too good.
Somehow they made it to the residence of the Daimyo in one piece, delivering the daughter to her happy father without as much as a scratch. They reported the attack, Minato-sensei making it very clear that it was not a war faction but just bandits. In these days you had to be very careful not to accidentally deepen the animosities between the big villages, especially when it came to the Fire Lord himself. The Daimyo asked them for their hard work and offered them food and water and a night’s stay. They could have gone back the same day, running all through the night, but since the mission was set out to be two days anyway they all decided to stay. Before they were all assigned their rooms for the night, Kakashi watched Minato give Mikoto a storage scroll. For her heavy kimono probably, he thought. They were shown very nice rooms in the east wing of the estate. Kakashi took his harness off and the sword, staying only in shirt and pants, walking barefoot in the estate of the daimyo. Rin and Mikoto had been given a different place to sleep, some rooms down from his. He didn’t know if they were rooming together or if he was the only one with a single bedroom.
He kept staring at Mikoto during dinner, trying to decipher how a girl he’d never met before could make him feel this way in just a few short hours. Kakashi was embarrassed each time she caught his eyes on her, but he couldn’t help doing it again. She ate almost as modestly as she spoke and walked, using her chopsticks between three slender fingers to eat vegetables and rice, almost no meat. She ate slowly, harbouring every taste laid out for her, putting rice into her mouth without spilling anything. Even Rin, who was generally a very pleasant person to be around, wasn't as graceful as her. Both of them giggled next to each other again. Kakashi stepped on his own toes beneath the table while the wheels in his brain were moving and moving. Now that the mission was over he could just ask Mikoto to live with him. That, after all, seemed what adults would do in such a situation. He decided to talk to Mikoto after dinner before they’d all go their separate ways to the baths.
After they had said a thorough thanks for the meal, which really had been extraordinarily big for such dire times, they were dismissed. Kakashi followed Rin and Mikoto out very closely, making sure not to be more than one step behind. He’d never felt nervous before, not in this way at least, but finally he pulled himself together. “Mikoto- san”, he said quickly, feeling warm in his face again as she turned around. “Could I talk to you for a second?” She turned fully to him and Rin giggled again, but walked onwards anyway. Mikoto’s eyes were once again averted from his, her fingers tangled together like she was nervous. Somehow the words slipped his mind so he just blurted out: “You are very pretty!” He had said it much louder than he had intended to. The girl squirmed a little, letting out a sound that was similar to a repressed laugh but was just a tiny squeak. She replied, tittering: “One was not aware that nina-san paid attention to such things.” Her cheeks were also slightly red now. Kakashi felt his heart beat against his chest.
“A-And you fight very well!” he added quickly, still screaming much louder than usual. Somehow he could not keep his temper in check, far away from the calm nature he usually had in missions. Mikoto pressed her lips together. “One is flattered you think so, ninja-san”, she whispered finally, eyes only for a second meeting his. “You don’t have to call me ninja-san, my name is Kakashi”, he said, moving his hands through the air as if that was necessary to support his argument. She looked away immediately, eyes pressed shut in embarrassment: “One could never be so casual with ninja-san.” Unable to hold himself back Kakashi moved his arm forward and grabbed hers, fingers long and soft underneath his. He looked at her directly, fire burning in his chest: “When I grow up, you should come back to Konoha and we can get married and live together.” It all came out of his mouth before he could stop himself. MIkoto’s eyes opened again, staring at him widely, but she did not reply.
Kakashi waitied, giving her time to mull the question over, but when three minutes had passed without a reply he suddenly felt very insecure. “If- If you want, of course?” he stuttered. Mikoto took a few deep breaths, her sighs sounding a little irritated. “One does not want to, no”, she said finally, voice still a whisper but much harder than it had been before. He took a step back, sudden pain in his chest like a stab wound. He wished not to have said anything at all. “O-ok”, he said, trying to regain his composure, “I understand.” Now he was the one folding his hands together behind his back, trying to find a way to gracefully back out of the conversation. “Y-you can come to Konoha again if you change your mind”, he said finally. “I’ll always be there.” Mikoto made a weird suppressed sound, another little squeak, but she just nodded. That was Kakashi’s cue to leave. He bowed, why exactly he did not know, and then walked, no, he ran to his room.
He did not go to the bath, at least not until very late that evening when all the halls were empty and quiet. The shame of rejection had sunk deep into his psyche. Kakashi had never failed with anything. Somehow he had just assumed that he would be naturally gifted in the area of romance too. For a while he just lay there, eyes up at the ceiling, thinking of the plot of every romance novel he’d ever read and how they had never prepared him well enough for this. Then he got up and finally made himself ready for bed. Luckily he would not have to see Mikoto again after this, as he could tell from her words alone that she wasn’t from Konoha. Just another half day of fast sprinting back to the village and he would be free from his humiliation.
Unfortunately the bad mood hadn’t vanished when they started to get ready for their way back in the early hours of the next morning. When Kakashi made it to the front door of the residence the daimyo was there talking to his teacher, Minato packed and ready to go. Kakashi only lifted a hand when Rin joined them, now again dressed in her usual practical outfit, the storage scroll which undoubtedly contained the kimono, stuck on her belt. “You look like you didn’t sleep well”, Rin said and she looked genuinely worried. Kakashi squirmed under her gaze, not ready to explain the failure he endured just the day before. “I’m fine”, he lied and Rin narrowed her eyes in disbelief, but did not pry. Instead she looked around and mumbled: “I wonder if he will be late…” Kakashi had no idea who she was talking about, but Mikoto hadn’t turned up yet which made him feel relieved. Maybe she wasn’t leaving with them.
Twenty minutes passed in which they just stood around waiting for something. Kakashi mostly looked at his feet. He only looked up when Minato-sensei sighed a “Finally.” Kakashi looked up and couldn’t believe his eyes. Out of the front door ran a boy to them, the blue and orange clothing and goggles combo unmistakable. It was Obito. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and bowed apologetically. “I overslept sensei, I’m so sorry!” he said quickly and Minato just smiled fatherly. It was just something Obito did that they had all gotten used to. Kakashi’s hand made a fist, confusion swirling in his brain. “Where- where did you come from?” he asked, his eyes wide on Obito. The other boy turned around, eyes narrowed behind his goggles and rolled his eyes demonstratively: “I was here all the time.”
“What, no you were not, when did you come…” Kakashi answered quickly, even though his brain had already put the puzzle pieces together. “I was in disguise, Bakashi” Obito said, swirling the storage scroll in his hand. Kakashi had seen Minato give this exact scroll to Mikoto yesterday. He had seen them exchange a few words. He could no longer deny the realisation that his mind had already come to minutes ago. The truth of it horrified him. “You were the handmaiden,” he said, a fact and not a question. Obito grinned: “One was, yes.” Kakashi’s feet shifted beneath him. He felt sick. How had he not noticed? How could something so obvious have slipped his impeccable perception? He looked back down to his feet, head swirling in circles. “That means I- I…” he stuttered, piercing it all together now
Obito laughed again, but his cheeks had gotten a little pink. “You thought I looked pretty!” he said excitedly, pushing Kakashi into the chest playfully. “You thought I fought very well!” Kakashi wanted to disappear into the earth and never come out of it again. Finally he had given Obito a reason to tease him relentlessly, to make him the laughing stock of their entire team. Of course he would use such a thing against him. Kakashi’s bit his lip under his mask, his eyes finding Obito in a silent plea to not rat him out. Obito stopped smiling for just a second and then continued with: “And that's all he said, after that nobody said anything.”
“That's- an odd thing to say”, Rin said, probably keenly aware that there was something she was missing between them at least. “No, no, that's what it was,” Kakashi said, nodding slightly to give Obito his unspoken thanks for their silent agreement. Whatever had happened the night before was to be forgotten about. “Well if nobody else said anything, that means we can leave now”, Minato, who had followed the conversations of the boys with interest, now said. The daimyo said some nice words about how thankful he was for their mission and the good work of Konoha shinobi in general, then he handed the reward to Minato and they went on their way.
It was much faster to get back than it was to get there in the first place. Now that neither Rin nor Obito had to pretend to be delicate women to shield a client they could just sprint through the trees as normal shinobi would. It would cut off their travel time back to Konoha by about 4 hours as they also required less rest then ordinary civilians. Kakashi kept at the back, watching Obito and Rin jump from tree to tree side by side. He still felt humiliated, even more than he did in the morning. Rin must have known that it was Obito by the way she was giggling with Mikoto all the time the day before. Kakashi shook his head. Not Mikoto, Mikoto did not exist. Which was good for him because that meant that his rejection did not count. Obito had just played him. If Kakashi would ever meet a girl as polite or pretty or competent as Mikoto she surely would agree to marry him.
They arrived in Konoha by afternoon and Minato dismissed them all immediately, offering to go to the Hokage office by himself to report on the mission for them. Kakashi was relieved he could just run away, not wanting to look at Obito anymore. “Don’t look so disappointed,” Obito said, a smile on his face, “I’m glad you think I’m a good fighter.” Kakashi didn’t dignify that with a reply. He just turned around and walked away, but Obito kept shouting after him: “Hey man, I didn’t want to upset you. I didn’t know you wouldn't recognise me. Come on Bakashi-”. Kakashi was out of earshot. What was Obito thinking? He was a guy, an idiot and a jerk, he had no delicate qualities that Kakashi liked. All Kakashi felt for Obito was intense dislike and rivalry.
Why then could he not stop thinking about all of it? No matter what Kakashi did as soon as he made it back to his house the pictures came back to him. Obito’s eyes averted, fingers slender and soft, the way the hair had flown in the wind when he had used his fire ball jutsu. The soft voice, the way he had blushed up on being complimented. And in addition to that, which was even worse, other memories of Obito, as himself. His eyes when he looked at the hokage heads in stone, the way his face frowned when he was concentrating, the way his eyes glistened when he did something right. He was an idiot and a jerk most of the time, but sometimes he was very nice. In the end he had even seemed apologetic for leading Kakashi on. Obito was also pretty. Sometimes at least, when the light reflected in his hair like little fireflies. Kakashi almost dropped the cup he had been holding when he heard his own thoughts.
He thought Obito, the guy, the jerk, the idiot, was pretty. Sometimes at least. Why did he think that? And why did that make his heart beat even harder than it had the day before?
