Liya’s Top Five Otoge

notes: I realized I once promised to do otoge reviews and completely forgot about it until now, so here’s the top five otoge that I love and why. A lot of the ones on this list tend to be sort of angsty… but most of them have a happy ending!

5. Dandelion -Wishes Brought to You-

Available On: Steam

Favorite Characters: Jieun, Jiwoo

This is Cheritz’s first game, and the first otoge I ever played! I have a soft spot in my heart for the wonderfully developed protagonist, Heejung, and it was a joy to see her grow over the course of the story. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed the romance and overarching plot. Each character was charming and memorable (with the exception of Jiyeon...), and had a fun dynamic with Heejung. There was a certain mysteriousness to the world the love interests came from because we never learned too much about it; a dreamy, almost fairy-tale like quality that made it feel more real to me than if we had gotten an exposition dump. However, the game is a bit rough around the edges, and the gameplay mechanics get tedious quickly. I also wish we had gotten to see more of the love interests interacting with each other. Overall, I love how earnest and sweet the game was, and I definitely shed a few tears over the course of my playthrough.

4. Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly

Favorite Characters: Monshiro, Kagiha

This game was definitely the highlight of the summer I first played it. The format is a bit different from other otoge, utilizing a flowchart to help you make choices and a shooting minigame, which I found rather neat. I also liked the ability to read short stories in between the main story, though sometimes it felt too tedious to be forced to read them to progress the main. The art is gorgeous, and the characters and their relationships with each other were well-developed and nuanced. I loved getting to find out more about everyone, and the fact that Beniyuri (the protagonist) was voiced was an excellent feature. This is a mystery and tragedy before it’s a romance, which I thought fitted perfectly with the sort of story it wanted to tell.

3. Cafe Enchante

Favorite Characters: Il Fado de Rie, Canus, Misyr Rex

Cafe Enchante might be billed as a cute, slice of life game where you run a cafe, but it’s an unexpected tearjerker that left me sobbing after several routes. I have a fondness for all of the characters, because they were all sweet, well-developed and likeable. Their dynamics and interactions with each other was top tier as well; I love that they were friends, and felt like a family! I have a fondness for the protagonist, Kotone, and I liked her characterization. The side characters were absolutely wonderful, too! The common route ended up being way longer than the individual routes, something I didn’t find fault with because I enjoyed seeing how everyone interacted. However, I did wish we could have had more time with the characters individually. Additionally, though I loved the true route (something I normally never do), I found the ending to be somewhat disappointing, and it left me with a bittersweet taste in my mouth. Overall, a top tier game!

2. Collar x Malice

Available On: PS Vita, Switch

Favorite Characters: Kageyuki Shiraishi, Takeru Sasakuza

Collar x Malice balances romance and a good story, and it does so well! The pacing was excellent to develop both, and both the core cast and the supporting characters were endearing and a joy to watch. Ichika is one of the best protagonists I’ve had the pleasure of playing as, and I love that she has her own personality, friendships and struggles outside of the main story and romance. I enjoyed the mystery aspects of the game, and piecing together the answers! I think the questions the game poses about justice and law, and sin and crime, were all interesting to consider, even if I don’t necessarily agree with every conclusion the game arrived at. Overall, it’s a beautiful game, and I enjoyed every minute I spent on it.

1. Code: Realize

Favorite Characters: Saint Germain, Victor Frankenstein

If you’ve read this far, congratulations! To any seasoned otoge player, I doubt my choice for my top otoge is any surprise. Code: Realize was one of the first otoge I’ve ever played, and it deserves every bit of praise that it gets. Cardia is such a strong and well-written protagonist. I loved her growth throughout the game, and how she was given the sort of agency other otoge protagonists don’t have. The overall plot was brilliant, and I love how every route tied together and built up the overarching mystery. The true route was great, but it definitely felt like it was used as a vehicle to tell the plot instead of letting the romance breath on its own. Besides that, every character was lovable and had such great chemistry! I have a deep fondness for all of them, and I bought both the fandisks for Code: Realize because I wanted to see more of everyone’s adventures together. Even writing this review has made me want to replay Code: Realize, and all the other games on my list, as well!

THAT BEING SAID. kagiha and monshiro are So Baby. To Me. idk if i'd f/o them per se, though i'm sure i should find a way to be... idk... a caring older figure to them?? i WOULD absolutely pat their heads and cook some good food for them and try to be emotional support for them, though. gotta give them some reprieve from the Predicament they're in.

also beniyuri is voiced by mai nakahara so i was immediately like... protect her. hug her. wah. i have such a soft spot for otome protags, especially those voiced by my Big Favs kjnkjn.

**unfortunately i have to say they're almost all high schoolers... even the ones who look like they're in their early to mid 20's ;w; and you don't find out until near the end, so i'd been crushing on one of 'em and got blindsided. AUGH. one character is definitely an adult, and the one i'd crushed on is confirmed 18 in an artbook, but man... that's basically a baby to me at this point. i need someone with a fully developed brain ksjdnfkjnsdfjk ;;;;;

Since I’m sad that otome games don’t have English dubs when they get realeased in the west, I’ve decided to do English fan casts to alleviate the pain. (I get that they’re a niche genre, but let me have this)

Code Realize, Hakuoki, and Amnesia will have the same voice actors from their English dubs. One of the exception is Toma, since his voice actor is unfortunately dead. I would replace Toma’s voice actor with Mike Haimoto. Another exception is Sanosuke Harada’s voice actor since he’s been blacklisted and arrested due to grooming a 16 year old and marrying her in 2014. He’s already been replaced by Phil Hayes in the Hakuoki movies, so he’ll stay.

I’m not doing Collar X Malice at the moment since it’s getting a movie adaptation this year, and (hopefully) it will inevitably get an English dub. If it doesn’t, then I’ll do it on the future. 

The heroines are all voiced in English as well because I say so lol.

I recently decided to give Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly a try. As I generally do when I get into something, I binged it. Now I’m about halfway through overall (as in I’ve seen roughly 50% of EVERYTHING - scenes and short stories in general, and endings). Here are a few misc. thoughts. Beware spoilers if you haven’t played or finished the game yourself!

Despite technically being an otome, this game is definitely a plot first, romance second title. To the point that on a first run the game is on rails towards what it calls the “best ending” and your choices actually DON’T matter, apart from a one-off choice that leads to an immediate bad ending. Kagiha’s ending MIGHT be an exception - according to a guide it SHOULD be possible immediately, but every other ending requires seeing a DIFFERENT ending that you can’t get until AFTER getting the “best ending” So at minimum for most routes you have to have seen at least two plot-related endings first.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing and I DO really like the actual story and how everything comes together. That said the actual “romance” routes are INCREDIBLY short which is a tad disappointing. If you include the short stories locked to each character (which are necessary for getting their endings) they’re probably like 2 hours long max. That’s not a ton of time to develop the relationship between the guy and MC and resolve it happily. The game mostly gets by on having every guy (except maybe Hikage, who is an outlier for several reasons) established in the story as having feelings for Ai/Beniyuri, which at least makes the potential for a relationship obvious. I still would have liked more buildup for each relationship though.

Something neat this game has done though is separating some of the characters into two distinct “routes” based on their fantasy mansion versions and reality after the good ending. There is a tragic Yamato ending and a very sweet and happy Takuya ending, and it definitely seems that same distinction will be made for Karasuba/Aki and Monshiro/Kazuya.

For most of the game I was not a big fan of Karasuba (for two main reasons - one, he is WAY too flirty/forward, and two he is just kind of an asshole), but he has grown on me a little thanks to the ending and “real world” segments. I appreciate that he was trying to get Ai to face the past and move on... although his reason for doing so wasn’t exactly heroic. Not sure how to describe it beyond saying it’s the opposite of the “cool motive, still murder” meme. What he was actually doing/saying was RIGHT and it is healthier for Ai to confront her trauma and move on, but he was only so insistent on it because she was using her lingering feelings for Natsuki as a shield to keep from acknowledging him (or any other potential romantic partner).

The way he and Yamato/Takuya represented two exactly different sides of the issue - one saying to face it and move on, the other just as stuck in the past and steeped in guilt as Ai - was done really well IMO. I haven’t actually seen any romance route other than Yamato/Takuya yet, but at least in his case I really love how they essentially are drawn together because of that shared trauma/inability to move on, and depending on which ending you get either they help lift the other up or outright drag the other down with them. I’m planning on doing Karasuba/Aki next because I want to see how his route expands on his desire to see Ai move forward, presumably in good AND bad ways.

Hikage (and Usagi, who seems to be connected to him) is the only lingering mystery in the story. After The Reveal I like him a little less as a character but I’m WAY more intrigued about his route. I need to know why he is the way he is and what exactly he was trying to accomplish, since the best ending left that a mystery. My only concern is that since his route will ALSO have an entirely separate plot, he’ll be even more sparse on romance compared to the others. We’ll see.

The shooting minigame is superfluous and only exists to give you an in-game currency to spend on unlocking short stories. IMO they should have made short stories only unlockable after making certain choices and/or seeing specific scenes (which is how some of them unlock anyway...). That would also serve the purpose of making the short stories feel a bit more connected to the story proper instead of existing separately in a nebulous time period during the plot.

Overall I’m really enjoying this game although I maintain that it doesn’t balance plot and romance well. If you want a game that is more about the romance/relationship, probably skip this. If you want a plot-focused game with romance as the secondary goal... play Even if Tempest. Or play Collar x Malice or Taisho x Alice for peak stories with a good balance of romance/plot. If you want more after playing THOSE gems... then I’d recommend this!

I 100%’d psychedelica of the black butterfly and I’m actually so sad there wasn’t more content for kagiha/natsu and I would have loved a secret end with hikage in the real world…. I know we see him but the mc doesn’t get to talk to him in the real world at all.. other than that I feel like it was a good game and I actually really like the flowchart system. lacking in a lot of romance but the story is good enough for me where that doesn’t matter. And the epilogues are sweet
