Charlie Cassell Sets Record with 7-21 on ODI Debut
Tumblr media
Charlie Cassell shattered a nine-year-old record on his debut in Men’s ODIs. The Scotland pacer claimed 7-21 in just 5.4 overs against Oman in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match on Monday. This outstanding performance broke Kagiso Rabada’s record of 6-16 set in July 2015.
Cassell was added to the squad after Chris Sole became unavailable due to personal reasons. He made an immediate impact with pinpoint accuracy. His very first ball in international cricket trapped former Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood lbw. Then, his second delivery breached Ayaan Khan’s defences, marking the first instance of a bowler picking up wickets off his first two balls in ODI cricket.

Scotland’s Charlie Cassell Sets Record with 7 Wickets on ODI Debut
In an extraordinary display of bowling prowess, Scotland’s Charlie Cassell has etched his name into cricket history by becoming the first bowler to take 7 wickets on his One Day International (ODI) debut. His record-setting performance came against Oman during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match held in Dundee.
Tumblr media
Cassell’s remarkable figures of 7/21 surpassed the previous record for the best ODI debut bowling figures, held by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada. Rabada had set the benchmark with 6/16 against Bangladesh in 2015. Notably, West Indies’ Fidel Edwards also achieved a notable feat with 6/22 against Zimbabwe in 2003 on his debut.
In a thrilling display of skill, Cassell made an immediate impact by dismissing Zeeshan Maqsood lbw and cleaning up Ayaan Khan with his first two deliveries. He continued his dominance by claiming Khalid Kail’s wicket in the same over and adding Shoaib Khan’s scalp in his second over. Cassell’s spree didn’t stop there as he further dismissed Mehran Khan, Pratik Athavale, and Bilal Khan. His efforts were instrumental in reducing Oman to a modest 91 runs, a total that Scotland chased down comfortably with 8 wickets to spare.
Scotland captain Richie Berrington praised Cassell’s resilience and dedication, especially highlighting his comeback from a significant injury. “You’ve come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs, and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible,” Berrington said while presenting Cassell with his cap before the game.

T20 World Cup 2024 final: India wins in Barbados after 13-year draught
The ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup was won by India in a nail-biting final, edging out South Africa by seven runs. The match was a fitting climax to a sensational tournament, with both unbeaten teams battling fiercely for the prestigious title. India’s triumph marked their first T20 World Cup win in over a decade, while South Africa’s quest for their inaugural world title continues.
The Epic Battle Unfolds
The stage was set at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, where cricket fans worldwide were treated to an unforgettable final. India’s captain won the toss and opted to bat first, setting the tone for a high-stakes encounter.
India's Innings: Kohli's Masterclass
India posted a formidable total of 176/7, thanks in large part to an attritional 76 from the ever-reliable Virat Kohli. Despite losing key wickets early, with Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant falling in quick succession to Keshav Maharaj, and Suryakumar Yadav being dismissed cheaply by Kagiso Rabada, India managed to stabilize their innings.
Virat Kohli and Axar Patel formed a vital partnership, adding 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Their stand was broken by a superb piece of fielding from Quinton de Kock, who ran out Axar with a direct hit. Kohli continued to anchor the innings, forging another crucial partnership with Shivam Dube. However, South Africa made late inroads, with Anrich Nortje’s double strike in the final over, removing Dube and Ravindra Jadeja, limiting India’s total.
South Africa's Chase: De Kock and Klaasen's Heroics
South Africa’s chase began on a shaky note, losing Reeza Hendricks to a perfect delivery from Jasprit Bumrah in the second over, followed by Aiden Markram’s dismissal by Arshdeep Singh. Quinton de Kock steadied the ship, partnering with Tristan Stubbs for a 58-run stand.
After Stubbs fell to Axar Patel, Heinrich Klaasen joined de Kock, and the duo kept South Africa’s hopes alive. De Kock’s valuable 39 came to an end as he was caught by Kuldeep Yadav off Arshdeep Singh. David Miller and Klaasen then took the attack to the Indian bowlers, bringing the required run-rate down to a run a ball with 30 runs needed.
However, Klaasen’s departure for 52, caught behind off Hardik Pandya, and Miller’s dismissal in the final over to a brilliant catch by Suryakumar Yadav, turned the tide in India’s favor. Despite the best efforts of Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada, South Africa fell agonizingly short, finishing eight runs shy of the target.
Fan Reactions:
– “What a final! Kudos to both teams for such a thrilling game. Congrats India! #INDvsSA #T20WorldCupFinal”
– “Virat Kohli’s 76 was a masterclass under pressure. Well-deserved win for India! #ViratKohli #Cricket”
– “Heartbreak for South Africa, but they played brilliantly. Klaasen and De Kock were superb. #QuintonDeKock #HeinrichKlaasen”
India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa will be remembered as one of the most thrilling matches in cricket history. As the cricketing world celebrates, the players and fans look forward to more exciting contests and the next opportunity for glory on the global stage.
This triumph propels India into the final, where they will face South Africa. The anticipation is palpable, as fans gear up for what promises to be an epic showdown. The team’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational, marked by determination, skill, and a never-say-die attitude.

Miller show takes South Africa to second round
by Rex Clementine
On bad wickets, the weaker team will always fancy their chances. The New York track is giving some teams headaches. Those teams are the stronger teams in the competition. In Dallas, we saw USA overcoming former champions Pakistan and Afghanistan beating pre-tournament favourites New Zealand in the Caribbean. Netherlands nearly stunned South Africa on Saturday in New York.
People tend to love high scoring games when it comes to T-20 cricket. But these low scoring matches are thrillers indeed.
Netherlands only made 103 batting first. You would have expected South Africa to cruise past that total and boost their Net Run Rate further. But this was some struggle.
Inside the Power Play they lost four wickets for just 12 runs. It was game on.
Tristan Stubbs reminds you of A.B. de Villiers all the time. He can go crazy clearing any boundary with little trouble. But this was more of a grind. He made 33 in 37 balls to steady the innings. The partnership with David Miller brought about sanity to South Africa’s innings.
There’s a reason why David Miller is nicknamed Killer Miller. He can tear apart even the best of attacks. Some say that he’s batting too low. But he’s there for one reason. When a rescue act is needed, he’s the man for it. Bit of Michael Bevan caliber. He showcased that on Saturday smashing 59 in 51 balls hitting four sixes.
South Africa will be glad that they held their own when tested. Tougher challenges are ahead in the second round. When you talk of their bowling, often you discuss Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje or Marco Jansen. But watch out for this Ottneil Baartman. He doesn’t generate genuine pace like others, but he’s on the money with his line and length. He’s kind of ideal for the demands of T-20 cricket.
As for the Dutch, they are not done yet. With both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka struggling, it is they who could be going through to the second round. They’ve got two exciting games coming up in the Caribbean.
