The short film for Flying Lotus’s “Until the Quiet Comes,” directed by Kahlil Joseph, visually articulates issues within lower-class black communities who are the product and subject of ongoing racial oppression. This structure creates, maintains, and encourages a lack of resources and opportunities, dysfunctional homes, abrupt childhoods, and Black death. All of these obstacles are depicted as well as subtle, visually poetic messages. The short film opens with a body submerged in water. The camera cuts to a young black boy in an empty pool. As the boy stares at the opposite wall, the viewer is not entirely sure what it is the boy sees. We see him raise his arm to form the shape of a gun with his hand, aiming it at the wall and firing. Suddenly, a shot ricochets from the wall’s direction, striking the young black boy. The opening scenes symbolize a lack of resources, feelings of containment and being trapped. As scenes shift to an older slain black male in a neighborhood courtyard, the camera cuts back to the young boy whose blood is now filling the pool that was once devoid of liquid. In the next shot, an LAPD helicopter hovers over Nickerson Gardens, Los Angeles. Suddenly, Joseph provides viewers with a moment of childlike innocence as we see the small boy from the pool playfully wrestling with another boy in a field. The following scene shows the boy looking distraught and discouraged as an older black male offers him Cheetos to lift his spirit. Viewers witness young black boys playing, chasing each other with sticks. Visuals cut between the group of boys and flashbacks of the small boy playing with his friend from the field.

Next, the mood of the video shifts back to being dark and sinister as a dead body lay on the ground at night and a hooded figure in all red runs backwards across the camera. This scene speaks to an atmosphere of violence. The body submerged in water reappears in the next shot before the camera jumps back to the body on the ground. The body suddenly comes to life, performing an array of ballet, krumping, and bone-breaking movements. He lifts his arms over his head revealing the bullet lodged in his torso. As he dances his movements evoke that of an apparition, a spirit. He is the only body moving as he passes bystanders who appear to not see him. This begs the question, who here is free? The dancer makes his way to a red old school driven by Flying Lotus himself; the car, a kind of death chariot, seems to pull the dancing body towards it. The short film closes with the once-submerged body now risen, and after climbing into the vehicle, the men cruise off. Is there any hope? “Not while you’re still breathing.”

Waiting for Providence: Narration I

Créer un jeu video n’est pas une mince affaire, c’est un exercice qui requiert de la détermination et du temps, beaucoup de temps. A deux, on a débuté notre aventure par une discussion, rythmée par un nombre incalculable de questions : Sommes-nous capables ? De quoi voulons-nous parler ? Qui sommes-nous ? Qu’avons-nous envie de faire ? A ces questions, on a trouvé des réponses plus complexes que ce que nous attendions et qui nous poussent à rester modestes face au travail à accomplir. Mais notre détermination reste intacte, et quand beaucoup tendent à dire qu’il faut accélérer, nous décidons de prendre notre temps. Parfois, ce positionnement peut paraître contradictoire, mais nous assure que la qualité sera au rendez-vous. C’est une lutte d’autant plus nécessaire pour un premier projet qui portera -- on l’espère -- tous ceux à venir. En marge du sujet de ce post on souhaite remercier tous ceux qui nous soutiennent depuis le début de l’aventure, amis, famille qui nous donnent l’envie de progresser et ceux qui viennent de la rejoindre : Jacques Pillet, qui nous aide à développer nos systèmes de jeu, Perrine le Bivic, directrice artistique de Rockorama, qui donne vie à notre sound design et Pierre Pauselli (funisdead / funisntdead), qui s’occupe des illustrations et dont on vous présentera le travail très prochainement.

Raconter des événements (🇬🇧 COMING SOON)

By reading narrative, we escape the anxiety that attacks us when we try to say something true about the world. This is the consoling function of narrative — the reason people tell stories, and have told stories from the beginning of time.” ― Umberto Eco

La narration, c’est raconter des événements. Ça tient en 3 mots, et pourtant ça a le potentiel de totalement changer la perception qu’on se fait de la vie. Ces événements, on peut les raconter de plein de manières différentes : écrits, film, musique… et aujourd’hui avec des mediums interactifs, mais c’est plus compliqué. Pourquoi ? Dans un jeu vidéo par exemple, il faut le bon équilibre entre le cadre du récit posé par le designer et la liberté offerte au joueur pour qu’il puisse s’approprier le récit par ses actions, l’histoire est parfois même juste un prétexte et passe au second plan. On retrouve d’ailleurs des narrations souvent plus poussées dans les romans et les films, et il y en a plusieurs qui nous intéressent chez Jeanne en ce moment 🤓.  On vous passera le traditionnel mythe à la Star Wars, on en a assez vu, même dans le jeu vidéo et ça n’aurait que peu d'intérêt. On va plutôt se rapprocher d’un réalisateur qu’on a découvert à Londres en octobre 2016 pendant l’exposition “The Infinite Mix” qui faisait la promotion “d’oeuvres audiovisuelles sentimentales et audacieuses” : Kahlil Joseph.

m.A.A.d, nous étions Compton

Avant même de continuer la lecture, prenez le temps de cliquer sur la vidéo au dessus. On attend. Ok c’est bon ? Alors, il faut s’imaginer que ce film était projeté sur deux écrans indépendants, collés en coin dans une salle hyper sombre avec un son à pleurer. Ca pèse clairement dans le sentiment d’immersion, surtout face à une oeuvre de Kahlil Joseph, il est connu pour réinventer le clip musical, il le dit lui même quand il se présente à Seu Jorge, il fait des films et pas des “music videos”. Celui-ci, m.A.A.d city, c’est une commande de Kendrick Lamar pour sa tournée en 2014. Un film qui parle de Compton, plutôt classique vous me direz, sauf que ce coup-ci, ce n’est pas un documentaire, pas de voix off pour narrer des expériences qui relatent une réalité à des kilomètres de la nôtre. Non ce coup-ci c’est différent, on se sent happé dans le film, on regarde un coup à droite, un coup à gauche et c’est sublime, les images et les émotions se suivent sans qu’on en saisisse les règles. Le sorcier Kahlil exerce sa magie, on se sent comme ballotté par une tempête, on sent parfois le vertige pendant un long moment de contemplation avant de plonger brutalement dans la violence d’une fusillade et finir dans les souvenirs d’un père, sur VHS. C’est d’autant plus surprenant que tout à l’air mixé dans un ordre dont lui seul à le secret de fabrication, c’est comme si l’intro se retrouvait au milieu, la conclusion au départ, on saute du passé au présent jusqu’à ce que les repères n’aient plus d’importance, et c’est sur ce point qu’on va insister. m.A.A.d a une narration unique, elle n’est pas attachée à démontrer une vérité sur un sujet ou relater le plus précisément possible des événements, elle n’est pas évidente non plus. La narration est personnifiée par un traitement ingénieux des effets visuels et sonores : 0:54 on se réveille, silence, contre-plongée 3:48 on se souvient, extrait VHS 8:04 la musique ralenti sous l’effet de l’alcool 10:35 coupure brutale, fusillade soudaine (qui rappelle que la violence s’invite souvent sans qu’on s’y prépare) 12:42 on plonge sous l’eau, le son change… et parfois en incarnant une sorte de spiritualité: 1:18 le monument vit, comme un bateau qui tangue et qui craque 4:01 on sort complètement de la réalité, élément 3D 4:56 je n’ai pas de mots... C’est prenant, mais pourquoi ? En faisant le choix de casser la linéarité, Kahlil Joseph parvient à faire ressentir le sujet plutôt que de l’expliquer, en résulte une oeuvre immersive qui crée de la proximité avec son spectateur. Une oeuvre proche et donc intime, elle laisse une forte impression, comme à la sortie d’un rollercoaster, on se sent chaviré et on s’approprie ce qu’on vient de vivre. Au sortir de la salle, on vous le dit, nous n’étions pas passé à Compton, nous étions Compton.

Si vous voulez aller plus loin, il faut savoir que l’installation s’appelle “Double conscience” en référence au concept de “Double Consciousness” du sociologue William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, connu pour ses combats pour l’égalité des Noirs et sa théorie de l’identité duelle au tout début du XXéme siècle aux USA. Mais ça, on vous le laisse, sinon l’espace va manquer et il reste encore un petit pan pour conclure.

Personnifier la narration dans le jeu video

Le jeu video, c’est un medium à part, si on le considère comme du cinéma on part en se tirant une balle dans le pied. L’idée n’est donc pas de simplement transposer m.A.A.d et d’y ajouter de l’interaction, mais bien de réfléchir à la personnification de la narration à travers un gameplay car là où la conception d’un film est prédictible et cadrée, celle d’un jeu vidéo peut réserver des surprises. On ne peut pas prévoir ce que le joueur fera ou ne fera pas, on ne peut que l’inciter et augmenter nos chances qu’il agisse et s’approprie le récit, d’où la volonté de créer une intimité entre le joueur et la narration. Pour qu’il se l’approprie personnellement et physiquement. Le medium videoludique est par ailleurs le meilleur moyen de créer ce rapprochement puisqu’il requiert une implication corporelle dans l’action. 

Providence est un jeu épisodique, chaque histoire sera indépendante des autres. On a choisi de centrer chaque épisode autour d’un personnage dont la personnalité sera le point de départ pour élaborer un concept narratif, une manière de raconter au travers d’un individu, par sa perception et son ressenti. Ces épisodes seront des expériences courtes.
