Chapter 4: Damage Control
The next day, Denki and Hanta found Reiko standing before the entrance to the school. She wrung her hands nervously as she gazed at the concrete arch, her eyes wide like she was considering that it would collapse upon her no sooner than she passed underneath it. The few students mulling around in the courtyard cast fervid glances at her; they weren’t discreet about their whispered gossip, staring right at her while they leaned in close to utter insults behind raised palms.
“Reiko!” Denki called, breaking away from his best friend’s side to trot up to her. When she looked at him, he could see uncertainty and fear swimming in her eyes. Several bandages covered the slices on her cheeks, but he could still tell that her face was even paler than usual.
“Denki… Have you heard what they’ve been saying about me?”
Denki grimaced at her question. Social media had lit up overnight. Rumors of Reiko’s supernatural abilities were flying everywhere, so much so that the local news had even taken notice of the spooky happenings and was trying to gain permission to do a morning news special. The comments about the lunchroom debacle were fierce, some even going as far to say that Reiko was an attempted murderer! Denki hadn’t even known where to start with damage control, and though his inboxes had been flooded with questions, he’d muted everything and just lied in bed wondering what to do.
“Denki… What if…” she started.
“Don’t even go there,” Denki interrupted, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder. “I know you didn’t break the window. Something weird is going on at this school, but it’s not your fault, Reiko. Don’t listen to what anyone says!”
Her eyes widened slightly, and then a small smile graced her lips. She reached up to gently lay her hand over his, and it took all his willpower not to squeal like a little girl. There was a matter of a very despondent Reiko, after all.
“Thank you, Denki. I appreciate it.”
They walked together into the school, with the two boys flanking Reiko. As they walked into the crowded entryway, where the students were changing into their slippers, the pleasant rumble of conversation vanished in an instant. Reiko kept her head down as she proceeded to an empty cubby. She slipped out of her tennis shoes and set them in the cubby, trading them for the soft white slippers. As she turned, one of the girls standing nearby angrily hissed, “Freak!”
“Hey!” Denki barked and stepped quickly in front of Reiko to shield her with his taller frame. “You don’t have any proof of anything, so knock it off! There were tons of people there by that window. How do you know I didn’t break it?” he challenged, jamming his thumb into his sternum. Of course, implicating himself probably wasn’t the brightest idea, but he was just so hopping mad! “So shove it, will ya?”
The girl’s face reddened with embarrassment, and she ducked her head, hurriedly marching away with her friends. Everyone else in the entryway avoided Denki’s impudent glare, and they didn’t say anything else about Reiko, either. Denki felt her hand curl into the bottom of his shirt, and he looked over his shoulder to give her a reassuring smile.
“Don’t worry. I won’t let anyone get away with saying something bad about you while I’m around,” he promised. His heart did a satisfied little flip as her cheeks turned a rosy shade of pink and her eyes glittered appreciatively.
“Thank you, Denki…”
She continued to cling close to him as they proceeded into the school proper. Denki intended to escort her to class; however, when they arrived, before they were met by the principal and vice principal. Denki gawked at the two men in confusion, while Reiko huddled behind him, a small whimper bubbling from her throat. It was weird, but Denki was not one to be deterred.
“Uh, can we help you?” he asked, crossing his arms. A few people had poked their heads out of the classrooms to ogle at the administrative personnel waiting outside the classroom, and they gasped at Denki’s complete lack of respect. The principal snorted and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, but Denki’s smart mouth wasn’t exactly unknown to the staff at the high school, so he let it slide in the interest of getting straight down to business.
“Miss Yanagi, there are some matters we wish to discuss with you.”
Denki felt her hands dig into the fabric of his shirt, pulling it taut against his shoulders. Scowling, he planted his feet and threw his arms out on either side of him in a clear defensive position.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for the rumor mill!” he snapped. “You’ve got no proof that the window broke because of Reiko!”
“Mister Kaminari, you were present at the incident. Surely you can see that the timing was rather convenient.”
“Yeah, but what about Kinoko?” he challenged. “She has openly stated she has ESP powers! Why is Reiko being singled out?”
“We have talked to Miss Komori at length, and though she has psychic abilities, they do not fall into the realm of breaking windows,” the vice principal countered.
“What a load of crap!” Hanta cried, jumping in with an accusatory finger. “You’re just gonna take what she says at her word?”
A crowd had gathered now, encircling the three students and the two adults. Whispers floated on the air, and Denki was pleased to see that doubt was beginning to circulate about Reiko’s dangerous psychic powers. Not that he needed any more reason to defend the girl, who was now pressing her face between his shoulder blades and smearing the fabric with tears.
“That’s right!” Denki huffed and crossed his arms. “I know what it is! You want an answer that’ll satisfy the media, and you intend to use Reiko as a scapegoat!” The uncomfortable look that the two men exchanged was all the proof Denki needed. However, Kinoko chose this moment to shoulder her way through the crowd, stepping in-between the principal and vice principal to point at Reiko. Tears glittered in the corners of her eyes, and her acting skills just made Denki all the more disgusted.
“How dare you! She attacked me; I know she did!”
“Not so fast,” Hanta interrupted. He stood beside Denki with one hand on his hip and the other tucking his chin into the webbing between his thumb and forefinger in a pose as smug as his smirk. “Kinoko, you’ve said time and time again that the ghosts you claim haunt the school feed off negative energy. I would say the argument between you and Reiko was pretty negative— so, how do you know that it wasn’t the ghosts that shattered the window in response to the energy around you two?”
“Holy crap, Hanta, that’s brilliant!” Denki hissed, and Hanta just nodded in self-satisfaction.
“I… I…” Kinoko stammered and took a step back. Her face began to pale, and she fidgeted incessantly with her hands, twiddling her fingers and playing with her clothes. “I didn’t think of that, I guess… But…”
“That proves it!” Denki asserted with another firm point at the two men. “You can’t definitively pin the incident on Reiko, so you can’t punish her!”
“By the way, if you want to ignore this—” Hanta started, and Denki looked over to see him procure a small camera from within the collar of his shirt. “I’ll release this to the media, and I think the view of who the victim is will quickly change, hmm? Imagine how much flak the school will get for expelling Reiko for something she didn’t do…”
“Hanta Sero, how dare you try to extort us!” the vice principal snapped, and as he moved to march over, his colleague stopped him with an arm. The principal pinched the bridge of his nose with a weary sigh, and it almost made Denki feel bad, how tired he looked. Almost— he really wasn’t in the mood to forgive anybody who attacked Reiko without proof.
“You’ve made your point. We won’t pursue any action against Reiko. We were hasty in our effort to cull the media coverage. I’ll have to find some other way to satisfy them.”
Well, if Denki was waiting for a green light, that was it.
“Then allow me!” he crowed, stepping forward while splaying a hand over his chest. “Let me start my paranormal investigation club! I’ll get to the bottom of what’s going on in this school, and you can report that to the media. I can probably even stop the haunting, too!”
“What makes you think that we’ll entrust such an important job to a couple of high schoolers?” the vice principal snapped.
“Because I offered to do it, duh!” Denki said matter-of-factly. “Who knows how long it’ll take to find a professional paranormal investigation crew to do it? And in the meantime, weird things will keep happening and the media circus will get worse!” Denki looked to the principal, who was staring levelly at him with a thoughtful hand on his chin. “I can do it! Let me prove that my club can do a good job!”
“... All right,” the man consented with a nod. While Denki cheered, the vice principal looked in dismay at his boss, who ignored his very obvious objection. “I will shut the school down for one day and allow you to investigate. If you can get to the bottom of the haunting and put a stop to it, I’ll recognize your club’s value as legitimate and give you all the resources you need to establish a real paranormal investigation team.”
“Yahoo! You got it! I’ll clear this haunting, just you watch!” he cheered, throwing his arms above his head. The principal promptly turned his back, toting his disappointed colleague back to the offices. The crowd began to disperse, but not without giving Denki appreciative and curious glances. He didn’t notice because he had his face scrunched up in sheer elation and was wiggling his hips about in a happy dance.
“Yes! Yes! I’m gonna finally get my team! A real paranormal investigation team!” he bleated happily. As she spun around to give his rump a little shake, someone barked a sharp “Hey!”
“Eh?” he blinked and looked over his shoulder, where Kinoko was standing there with her arms crossed.
“You’re gonna let me investigate with you, right?”
“Uh… Sure.” Denki really didn’t think she would be useful, but if he refused, she’d probably show up anyway and cause all sorts of trouble. Kinoko didn’t really sense his deception, though, because her face split into a wide grin.
“All right! Don’t worry, I know exactly what’s going on,” she touted with a self-satisfied head waggle. She twirled on her heel to begin marching off back to class, her nose stuck up in the air and her hands on her hips. “You’re smart to take advantage of my expertise!”
“Yeah… Whatever,” Denki groaned unenthusiastically, and when she finally rounded the corner, he released the massive sigh he’d been holding. Everyone had finally gone back into the classrooms, and that finally gave him the chance to turn around and look at Reiko. She was staring down at her feet with her hands clasped shyly behind her back, and though her silvery hair hung down into her face, he could see just how bright pink her skin was.
“Thank you so much…” she whispered, tilting her head up to peer at him with bashful, glistening eyes. “No one’s ever defended me like that before…”
“Uh, hello, can I get some credit here?” Hanta griped, digging his finger in his ear.
“Of course. Thank you too, Hanta,” she smiled, and the boy sniffed haughtily. “But Denki,” she continued, looking back at him. “If we can’t solve this haunting, now you have to deal with the principal… Won’t that be too much trouble?”
“Don’t sweat it, Reiko!” he reassured her, winking while he gave her a confident thumbs-up. “I know the three of us— and Kinoko, maybe— will be able to figure this out, especially with a whole day of investigation. We’re gonna get to the bottom of it and clear your name for good!”
Reiko blinked, then smiled sweetly. It was such a pretty smile, a genuine smile, and it made Denki’s heart flutter.
Honestly, establishing his paranormal investigation team wasn’t the most important thing anymore. He had to get to the bottom of this paranormal panic for Reiko’s sake. He had to make sure she could keep smiling like that— that she didn’t have anything to fear in being who she was.

Chapter 2: Mysterious Happenings... Or A Lack Thereof
With a high-pitched screech, Hanta jumped into Denki’s arms, causing the blond to drop the flashlight. The light bounced across the floor and wall as it rolled across the floor, and as they caught across the pale girl’s face to throw spooky shadows across it. This just made Denki and Hanta scream louder.
“OH MY GOD!”
“I KNOW, MAN!”
“IT’S A GHOST, MAN!”
“I KNOW, MAN!”
“Excuse me,” the girl said suddenly, then flinched when they both screamed again at the tops of their lungs. She scrunched her eyebrows with a disdainful pout and continued, “Please stop screaming. It’s giving me quite the headache.”
Denki and Hanta obediently clamped their mouths shut. Hanta continued to cling to Denki while being held in his arms, though he didn’t seem to mind the fact that Denki’s legs were quivering like egg pudding.
“Can ghosts get headaches?” Hanta whispered in his ear.
“I dunno, man, but I’m not gonna contradict her!” Denki hissed back. Apparently, their feverishly whispered conversation was not quiet enough, as the girl gave them a reproachful look.
“I’m not a ghost,” she sighed. “I’m a telekinetic. You two have been indulging too much in that girl’s fantasies…”
“You’re not a ghost?” Denki echoed, his body going slack with a mixture of disappointment and relief. Hanta yelped as his friend’s arms went lax underneath him, causing him to slip down his body. He grabbed onto the waistband of Denki’s pants as if that would stop his descent, but all he accomplished was pulling Denki’s pants down to his ankles. The girl raised her eyebrows at his duck-patterned underwear, and Denki hastily grabbed his pants to tug them back up, smiling sheepishly.
“I just answered that,” the girl replied matter-of-factly. She looked down at the erasers and chalk bits littering the floor around her, then inhaled. Once again, that strange white aura began to emanate from her body. Denki’s eyes blew wide like golden moons when the erasers and chalk began to float up from the floor, wobbling a bit while they swirled around the girl. His body went slack again with his awe, causing his pants to drop back down and catch on Hanta’s head, and the girl smirked in amusement.
“You sure are some funny boys.”
“I’m told my sense of humor is attractive,” Denki grinned, then remembered that he was standing in front of her in his boxers and that wasn’t exactly charming. Cheeks a raging pink, he pulled them back up again and gave the girl a bashful smile. “A telekinetic, huh?”
“That’s right. I come here sometimes to hone my abilities. It’s kind of hard to explain your belongings floating around your room to your parents.”
“Yeah, man, ain’t it a drag when they just bust in on ya without asking?” Denki laughed and ran his fingers through his hair. He was surprised to find his fingertips coated in a thick layer of perspiration when he pulled his hand back.
“He’s taking this awfully well,” the girl remarked to Hanta, who was still sitting on his rump hugging Denki’s legs.
“Yeah, he uses humor as a defense mechanism,” Hanta shrugged. Denki’s blush deepened and he shoved Hanta in the side of the head, ignoring his pained yelp to flash the silver-haired girl a suave smile. Well, he thought it was suave, but in reality it was all wobbly and shaky and totally unimpressive.
“What’s your name?”
“Reiko Yanagi.”
“Cool! I’m Denki Kaminari and this is my best friend, Hanta Sero.”
“‘Sup,” Hanta said from his spot on the floor, giving the girl a wave. She laughed, which Denki supposed was a good sign— girls laughed when they liked you, right? “So, you mentioned Kinoko earlier— do you not believe that the school is haunted?”
“It’s not true that scary stories have filled the school with dark energy, no,” Reiko quipped. The white aura brightened as the objects began to float higher and spin slowly in a circle around her. “There is no dark energy, and therefore, there are no ghosts.”
“But what about all the reported sightings?” Denki interjected. Reiko gave him a look that made him gulp; her eyes were piercing, so much so that it felt like she was staring straight down into his soul. It was kinda hot, honestly.
“Have you actually seen any of these things happen?”
“No,” he grumbled, clasping his hands behind his back and scuffing the tile floor with the toe of his sneaker. “But there’s no smoke without fire, right? Something’s going on.”
“That is true,” she relented. She turned to face them fully, leaning back against the teacher’s desk while the objects continued to float around her in that creepy yet beautiful way. “Something is going on in this school, but I’m afraid that Kinoko is completely off the mark. She’s using it as an opportunity to call attention to herself.”
“That’s a little mean,” Hanta frowned. When he pressed his cheek against Denki’s leg, Denki remembered that Hanta was literally still sitting there holding his legs— so he jerked his leg violently in an attempt to get his friend off. Hanta pouted— apparently he’d found it quite comfortable to cling to him like a koala bear— but obediently climbed to his feet. “Well, I guess we won’t be needing this tonight,” he sighed and powered off the camcorder.
Denki poked his lips out in a pitiful pout. It felt wrong to just dismiss everything so suddenly. He could feel it deep in his gut— there was something spooky at this school. Or maybe he just had to take a shit. It had been a while.
Focus, Denki. Pretty girl. Pretty girl with ESP powers, he reminded himself.
Reiko suddenly staggered, causing the white light to fade from her body and the school supplies to drop back to the ground. Denki moved on instinct. He jumped forward to catch Reiko by the elbow as she slipped to the side, and then he looped an arm around her waist when it was clear that she couldn’t even support her own weight. He gently helped her into a sitting position on the ground, where she sat there panting and even paler than before.
“Hey, hey, what happened?”
“Ah, this is normal,” she puffed between quiet wheezes. “Using my powers is very taxing… I come here to try to increase my endurance. I kind of lost track of time talking to you.”
“Oh… I’m sorry,” Denki mumbled, not really sure what to say. Reiko leaned back against the desk with a shaky sigh, using her hand to push her bangs out of her face. The moonlight filtering in through the window illuminated her pale skin, which shone with perspiration.
“I’ll be all right in a few minutes,” she smiled. “So tell me, how did you two end up here?”
“We were looking for the ghost, of course!” Denki declared. He sat back on his heels while he gestured wildly with his hands. “I want to establish a paranormal research society here at the school so we can help the community with paranormal cases that don’t necessarily get attention from bigger ones! Hauntings are way more common than people realize, and a lotta people don’t know what to do— so that’s where I wanna come in! I wanna help people with their ghost problems!” He grinned over his shoulder at Hanta, who just shrugged.
“I’m just the cameraman,” he said with a look down at his camcorder. “And I kinda keep Denki out of trouble.”
“It doesn’t sound like you’re doing a very good job, considering you let him break into the school in the middle of the night,” Reiko laughed.
“Hey, bold words from somebody who broke into the school themselves!” Hanta retorted, which made Reiko shrug in surrender. “How did you even get in here?”
“The same as you. I’ve had a copy of the janitor’s key for months now.”
“Wicked,” Denki grinned in admiration. He was liking this girl more and more.
Reiko grabbed the edge of the desk to haul herself to her feet. As she wobbled a little, Denki’s hands fluttered around in front of her body, wanting to support her but not wanting to overstep her boundaries. He’d just met her, after all. Thankfully, Reiko gave him a grateful smile while she rested against the desk. After half a minute, she straightened up, and though she looked tired, she seemed to be able to walk just fine.
“I should be getting home before I’m missed. You two had better clear out, too. You won’t find anything happening tonight,” she said, running her hand through her silvery hair again.
“You seem awful sure of that,” Hanta said suspiciously.
“That’s because this school’s not haunted, at least not by ghosts,” Reiko shrugged. As she walked past Hanta, his mouth fell open in confusion and he looked helplessly at Denki.
“What does she mean? How can a school be haunted but not haunted?”
“Think on it, Mr. Paranormal Research,” Reiko smirked over her shoulder at Denki, giving him a playful wink that made his heart play his ribs like a pair of bongo drums. “I’ll see you tomorrow?” It was a question, an invitation, and like hell Denki was gonna refuse a proposition with a cute girl who was into paranormal investigation!
“Absolutely! See you tomorrow, Reiko!” he chirped with a wave.
As she turned the corner, Hanta sniffed disdainfully and gave Denki a chiding look.
“Dude, you’re a total sap.”
“Maybe I am, but the pretty girl said see you tomorrow,” Denki retorted with a cavalier waggle of his head. “You’re just jealous that she’s into me.”
“Dude, she’s not into you!”
“She totally is, and you’re jealous!”
“Whatever! I wanna go home, it’s dark, I’m starving, and my dignity is a little damaged,” Hanta huffed with a look down at his camcorder. Hanta hadn’t been the one caught with his pants down, literally, but Denki decided not to comment on it. “I can’t believe you roped me into this… All this for nothing, the place isn’t even haunted.”
“Ah, ah, ah,” Denki corrected, wagging his finger, “it is haunted. What Reiko meant is that the entity probably feeds off all the energy of people, and so the activity is going to be nonexistent when the school’s empty like this.”
Hanta blinked at him, then whistled appreciatively.
“Wow, really? How’d you get that?”
“Because I am a paranormal whiz, that’s why. Now come on! Reiko got me thinking, so I’ve got research to do.” As he marched out the classroom, Hanta trudged behind, groaning.
“Can we research some hamburgers and fries first?”
“Of course! We need brain food!”
“We?” Hanta whined, and Denki looked over his shoulder with his eyebrows raised.
“Yes, we. I can’t do this by myself! Come on, I’ve roped you into worse.”
“I dunno, man. You know what they say, ghost-hunting is the gateway to burglary and theft.”
“I’ve literally never heard someone say that. You’re just being a stick in the mud,” Denki huffed, falling back so he could elbow Hanta in the ribs. Hanta hissed, looking offended, then elbowed him back. Denki elbowed him again, and they stopped in the hallway to get into a small scuffle that ended with Hanta in a headlock.
“Okay, okay, I’ll help you hunt the stupid ghost! Now, please, can we go get some hamburgers? I’m so hungry I feel like I might die!” Hanta whined while he wiggled in Denki’s grasp. Grinning triumphantly, Denki released him. Hanta shuffled back to his feet, straightening his disarrayed hair, and then gave Denki a small grin. “I guess it does beat staying at home doing lame homework and stuff. It would be cool if we found something.”
“Exactly. Now, let’s go acquire that brain food! And call your mom, you’re staying at my place tonight. We got lotsa work to do.”
“Yeah, yeah, you got it, boss,” Hanta mumbled as he dialed his mom’s number.
As they strutted out of the school, a bright smile played over Denki’s lips. Maybe the ghost-hunting tonight was a bust, but they’d still acquired some useful information— and maybe an ally, too. He snickered quietly to himself as the next phase of his plan hatched in his mind. He was closing in on the mysterious happenings occurring at the school, and one way or another, he was going to get to the bottom of it!

The Creepy Capers of U.A. Paranormal Investigation Society
Book 1: Poltergeist Panic!
Ao3
Foreword
“The wind howled ominously outside the door. She sat in the passenger seat, nervous; it had been too long since her boyfriend had gone out to look for gas. Then, there was that sound— skritch, skritch, skritch — on the roof of the car,” Pony read from her phone in a low voice, the flashlight tucked under her chin so the bright light cast dark shadows on her face. She and her friends huddled in the middle of the empty classroom, all the desks pushed away from them to surround them in a circle. The other girls leaned close to listen to Pony’s quiet, ominous voice with rapt attention, eyes shining in the darkness.
“She had been telling herself it was the old, gnarled oak tree they’d parked next to when the car finally gave out, but was that really it? It sounded like claws, like a monster perched on the car waiting for her to finally get out. Oh, she must know!”
“No! You stupid bitch!” Itsuka whispered under her breath, hugging her knees.
“She hesitantly unlocked the car and pulled the handle. The wind snatched up the door no sooner than she’d pried it open, making it slam open and hit the tree. The branches rattled at the force, but nothing came out to get her… Yet .”
“Oh, I do hope this story has a happy ending,” Yui whimpered, peeking out of her fingers.
“Yui, this is a scary story,” Setsuna reminded, seemingly unperturbed by the spooky story and atmosphere.
“She edged out of the car, slowly, and looked around— and then she screamed! There, hanging from the tree from an old, frayed noose, was her boyfriend! His sneakers scraped against the roof of the car as the wind blew him back and forth— skritch, skritch, skritch. Before she could do anything, someone put a hand on her shoulder and whispered…”
Pony leaned forward, eyes wide, “ You shouldn’t have parked on my grave. ”
The girls erupted into squeals, thrashing about as the tension finally snapped. Pony howled with merry laughter, slapping her knee giddily. There really was something about reading scary stories in a dark classroom on a Friday afternoon with your girl friends! They talked about the story while Pony searched up another one to read. As she cleared her throat to begin, however, the door slammed open, making them all jump and cry out in fright.
A small silhouette stood in the doorway, outlined by the light of the hallway. Her bob cut swished around her chin as she marched forward and flipped on the light; it was none other than Kinoko Komori, one of their classmates. Pony blinked in confusion, not sure why the girl’s face was flushed in anger and her hands were balled up in fists.
“Just what do you think you’re doing?” she snapped and pointed an accusing finger at the group of girls. They all looked at one another in confusion, then turned back to the panting Kinoko.
“Um… We’re holding our Literature Club meeting,” Pony explained while tilting her head to the side. “This is our annual Halloween spooky story marathon. We’ve got permission to be locked in the building tonight from administration. Is there a problem?” Not that Kinoko had any kind of authoratorious position, but it could be that something went wrong on the administrative side, and they would need to fix that before continuing their slumber party. Kinoko slammed her foot down on the tiled floor, her face turning a whole shade darker.
“You idiots! You can’t be telling spooky stories in here!”
“Uh… Why not?” Itsuka asked irritatedly, standing up to jut out her hip and put a hand on it. “Last I checked, you weren’t the boss of us.”
“It’s not about that! I am a psychic!” Kinoko proclaimed, jamming her thumb into her chest. The rest of the girls exchanged confused glances as they stood, looking at Kinoko warily. “Your spooky stories are filling the school with negative energy and attracting wayward spirits; I can feel them! If you keep it up, not only will you fill our school with ghosts, but you’ll attract something really nasty! Do you want to be responsible for this school becoming a hotbed of paranormal activity?”
“Oh my God, is she crazy?” Yui asked, covering her mouth with her hand as she snorted with laughter. The other girls began to giggle at Kinoko’s absolutely wild tale, but Pony settled them down with a wave of her hands, not wanting to be ugly.
“Look, Kinoko, they’re just stories,” she said, stepping forward with a smile. “They’re really quite harmless. We’re not hurting anybody, so can you please—?”
“Are you not listening to me?” Kinoko screeched, stamping her foot again. “I just told you that you’re hurting everybody in the school with your stupid horror stories! I’m a psychic! I know what I’m talking about!”
“You’re not a psychic, you loon,” Itsuka laughed, and several of the girls joined in. Kinoko flinched, her eyes going wide at the cruel jibe. “You’re probably just jealous that we’re all in here hanging out and decided to take it out on us. Instead of looking for attention with tall tales, why don’t you try making some friends? Look, we’ll even let you read scary stories with us. All you have to do is ask.”
“No!” Kinoko yelled. “I’m a real psychic! I don’t want to hang out with you bimbos; I want you to get lost!”
“Hey!” Itsuka started, rolling up the sleeve of her uniform jacket angrily. As she stepped forward, there was a loud scraping sound. They all looked across the room just in time for one of the desks to lift up and go flying across the room. It smashed into the back wall, splintering and falling to the ground in pieces. They all stared at it in shock for a moment, color draining from their faces.
“See? See?” Kinoko screeched, pointing emphatically at the destroyed desk. “I told you! It’s already begun! You’ve attracted bad spirits to the school, and now they’re going to run wild!” Kinoko’s words snapped them out of their shock, prompting them to all release shrill screams. All the desks in the room began vibrating as they scrambled around, snatching up their things and overnight bags.
“Let’s get out of here!”
“Uwahhhhhh! I’m calling my mom!”
“We’re sorry! Please don’t hurt us!”
The girls ran sobbing out of the room, leaving behind tears and an empty classroom. Kinoko still stood in the threshold of the door, watching the shaking desks slowly settle. Her eyes gleamed darkly as a small smile bloomed on her round face.
“I am a psychic… And anyone who tries to say otherwise is gonna regret it!”

Poltergeist Panic! Masterlist
Tumblr media
Hey, everyone! I am super excited to present the story I wrote for the @kaminaribigbang! Be sure to check out the art my partner @natsudorkoneel did, and enjoy!
Foreword: ““It’s not about that! I am a psychic!” Kinoko proclaimed, jamming her thumb into her chest. The rest of the girls exchanged confused glances as they stood, looking at Kinoko warily.”
Chapter 1: “There was a small gasp from the silver-haired girl standing by the teacher’s desk. Around her head floated erasers and chalk, and she had a strange white aura around her body.”
Chapter 2: ““I’m not a ghost,” she sighed. “I’m a telekinetic. You two have been indulging too much in that girl’s fantasies…””
Chapter 3: ““Are you done?” Reiko interrupted, her tone blase and unimpressed. Kinoko flinched at the harshness of her voice, a small gasp coming from her parted lips. “Really, all you’re doing with these outrageous stories of yours is inciting fear. It’s really immature of you.””
Chapter 4: “Reiko kept her head down as she proceeded to an empty cubby. She slipped out of her tennis shoes and set them in the cubby, trading them for the soft white slippers. As she turned, one of the girls standing nearby angrily hissed, “Freak!””
