Le Capc fête ses 50 ans avec l’artiste Kapwani Kiwanga

Kapwani Kiwanga a investi la grande nef du Capc Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux pour un projet majestueux depuis la fin du mois de juin. Une exposition de grande envergure pour célébrer les 50 ans de l’institution dont le Château Haut-Bailly est mécène depuis de nombreuses années. Nous avons eu la chance de découvrir cette création monumentale de l’artiste canadienne qui expose au Capc jusqu’au 7 janvier 2024.

50 années dédiées à la création contemporaine

Fondé en 1973, le Capc – Centre d’arts plastiques contemporains, lieu d’expérimentation autour de l’art, fête cette année ses 50 ans. « Toujours en quête de pratiques artistiques novatrices en prise avec les enjeux de leur époque, le Capc déploie depuis cinq décennies une activité dense et ininterrompue d’expositions, performances et actions de médiation auprès des bordelais et bordelaises, et d’un public national et international » peut-on lire sur le site du musée.

Des événements sont organisés tout au long de l’année pour revenir sur ce demi-siècle et projeter le musée vers l’avenir. Une exposition d’envergure vient d’ailleurs de démarrer dans la nef de l’institution et c’est l’artiste canadienne installée à Paris, Kapwani Kiwanga, qui a été choisie. Sa manière de mettre en lumière des histoires, son travail sur les formes, les ouvertures et les asymétries ont été une évidence pour le Capc.

La nef comme point de départ

L’architecture du bâtiment a été une véritable source d’inspiration pour l’artiste qui a su épouser la structure et créer, d’une certaine manière, une extension de l’architecture. En effet, des rideaux de cordes indigo issues de la corderie française viennent donner vie aux grandes arches de l’Entrepôt Laîné tout en mettant en valeur un savoir-faire artisanal datant de plusieurs siècles.

Au total, 53 kilomètres de corde ont été nécessaires pour créer l’installation. Deux systèmes différents permettent de les maintenir : des armatures en bois ou des structures en métal. Le tout conduit le public, via un jeu de lumière, dans un univers onirique autour de l’histoire de Bordeaux et du commerce fluvial bordelais.

Retenue d’eau ?

Comme un fleuve qui traverse la ville, les rideaux habillent la nef. Les cordes sont mêlées à différents matériaux, sélectionnés aussi bien pour leur esthétique que pour leur symbolique, et ce afin de raconter la richesse de l’histoire de la ville de Bordeaux et de son fleuve. Kapwani Kiwanga a su jouer avec l’eau, la transparence, l’opacité et les sons. Les différents diamètres des cordes apportent des vibrations étonnantes et une nouvelle captation du son à cette nef historique du XIXème siècle. Cette exposition permet également de mettre en lumière le savoir-faire des équipes du Capc, producteur de l’exposition, qui ont réalisé une formidable mise en scène technique. Une installation grandiose pour célébrer un demi-siècle de création.

Over the reading week I decided to visit the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. Generally abbreviated to “the Power Plant”, this gallery specialises in presenting both national and international contemporary artists to Toronto’s artistic community and the general public. I’ve decided to focus on one of four current exhibitions being presented at the Power Plant, Kapwani Kiwanga’s A Wall is Just a Wall. This show is curated by Carolin Kochling, and appears upstairs on the Power Plant’s second floor.

A Wall is Just a Wall consists of two artworks which appear in two separate rooms (separated by a partitioning wall), one an installation and the other a video. Kiwanga has divided the first room into two areas, a blue area and a pink area. Both areas are painted in their respected colours and have corresponding coloured lights installed overhead. After travelling through the first multicoloured room, visitors are encouraged to turn around a corner and into a dark room where Kiwanga’s A Primer (2017) is being projected onto an adjacent wall. Despite the deceptive simplicity of the show, Kiwanga work actually encapsulates a lot of subtleties in terms of critical discourse.

Kochling has done a great job in curating an exhibition that is both aesthetically pleasing and academically engaging. The exhibitions blue and pink room is a fantastic selfie opportunity for people looking to share their gallery experience with their friend online (#KapwaniKiwanga), while A Primer’s technically brilliant cinematography and encompassing discourse (in which Kiwanga “deconstructs the physical and physiological qualities of different built environments” (Powerplant, 8) satisfies the curious art student. What could make the exhibition stronger? Nothing. A range of pedagogical didactics (wall vinyl, programs, a map, gallery sitters) are available for anybody seeking additional information about the show, while the otherwise blank exhibition space keep visitors from being distracted - and allows them to appreciate the artwork on display for what it is.

Combining her training as an anthropologist and the multivocal approach of art, Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga searches for the meeting points between objects’ formal qualities and the complex social histories they embody.

We should always ask ourselves how did plants experienced any given historical event. Placed in vases, together with former sworn enemies in the fight for sun and earth, what did they make of the spoken celebratory speeches? What did independence and freedom meant now that they were uprooted? Similarly you could organize a congress of thunders and let them debate or climb towards the sonar range and look for echoes of the promised future, the unshackled one. It all springs from the same humming, vibrations that know how objects give birth to children, and some colors vocalize torture, others calmness.
